For God's Sake

Stupidity -- not hate -- in S.C. GOP

Two South Carolina Republican officials have apologized for defending U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint by likening him to Jews who "take care of the pennies." Edwin Merwin and James Ulmer, Chairman of the GOP in Bamberg County and Orangeburg County respectively, wrote in to the Orangeburg Times to explain why Senator DeMint deserved praise for not bringing home as much pork as some of his detractors would like. And you have to love the fact that they defended a senator's avoidance of pork by explaining the Jewishness of his actions, even if it was not dietary laws which they had in mind.

"There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves," the chairmen wrote. "By not using earmarks to fund projects for South Carolina and instead using actual bills, DeMint is watching our nation's pennies and trying to preserve our country's wealth and our economy's viability to give all an opportunity to succeed."

These guys said something stupid and something which many will find hurtful, but is it hateful? Are they really guilty of anti-Semitism, as many in both the Jewish community and in the Democratic Party have suggested? And have they not tapped in to a myth in which many Jews take pride, at least privately?

Of course I don't mean the part about being cheap. But what about the fact that Jews often describe with real pride, our historic ability to succeed financially, especially in the United States? It's not that there are no poor Jews. In fact, about 9% of Jews in America live below the poverty level, and that number is on the rise. But we are also very proud of the enormous financial success of the American Jewish community, and of the fiscal responsibility which has often contributed to it.

Could it be that the real issue here is more akin to those who argue that it's okay for black people to use the N-word, but not for whites to do so? Are those who jumped to accuse Merwin and Ulmer of anti-Semitism simply embarrassed because something that is seen as a private Jewish matter was actually spoken about in public by Gentiles? At the very least those are questions which should be asked by Jews of Jews before we start crying, "anti-Semites!"

I have no need or desire to spend time defending two small-time South Carolina GOP leaders, but I think that people who fail to distinguish between stupidity -- of which Merwin and Ulmer are clearly guilty -- and hatred are making a very bad mistake themselves. Such mistakes undermine the ability to confront genuine anti-Semitism, and provide cover for those within the Jewish community whose understanding of Jewish pride actually feeds the very perceptions which discomfort them when articulated by those who are not Jewish.

At the end of day, what these events - both the original comments and the reaction to them - tell us is that stereotypes are often based a bit more in reality than many people like to admit, are more persistent that we almost ever realize even when they are not, and can cause real harm and pain even if that was not the original intent of those who drew upon them. Those are facts which should inform how each of us speaks and writes both about the groups of which we are a part, and those of which we are not. Based upon their apologies, both Merwin and Ulmer now know that. How about the rest of us?

Just throwing this out there for the monotheist crowd:

Has it ever occurred to you guys that just *maybe* you're acting like a bunch of children trying to deflect the blame for this that, and the other thing in whatever direction it takes to divert the wrath of what you see as an abusive parent, and in the process just plain behaving badly, even by your own standards?

My. Gods. People.

You're so scared of being blamed for what you obsessively do trying to push off the blame, that you make mockeries of everything you claim to represent, and hurt yourselves, each other, any given bystander, and the name of who you claim to revere in the process.

You hear a parable about motes and planks and all you do is point at each other, "You people got a plank in your eye!"

Work it out, would you? Just listening to you gives me a headache where my faith in humanity ought to be. Gods know what it's like for you, at this point.

Convincing yourself you were right all along doesn't mean you see nothing. Never mind constitute virtue.

Stop the hate, *and* the stupidity, *first.* Then bloody well have a Battle of the Bands about who takes the credit.

In addition to my previous statements, I would like to point out a question that Hirschfield asked in his commentary. He asked, "Are they really guilty of anti-Semitism, as many in both the Jewish community and in the Democratic Party have suggested?"

You've got to be kidding me! If the Jews want to see anti-Semitism, have them stick around when the Democratic Party throws Israel under the bus. When that happens, that will be the coup de grace of the once great nation of America.

In Genesis 12:2,3 God spoke to Abram and said, "And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."

Zechariah 2:8 "For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you (Israel): for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye."

I don't think anyone is debating the stupidity of the comments these two GOP Goobers made. We have all became quite used to that by now, especially when it comes to utterances emminating from the State that led secession from the Union and still flies the flag that symbolized it. Hate is a hallmark of stupidity, an obviously expression of stupidity, and manifests itself in both word & deed. Considering what has been coming out of South Carolina over the past few years, we cannot dismiss them as mutually exclusive acts. Rather, now, as in 1862, they seem to go hand in hand. We should not be surprised, but we are allowed to be disgusted. Don't simply laugh this off. Comments that we view as goofy, or stupid, or ignorant are subject to our scrutiny, particulary so when made by politicians and others who have & wield power.

To IRAE:

I am not debating the actual saying or where it originated. I just now googled the phrase as it was stated in Hirschfield's column. Here's what I found:

November 16, 2008 in http://3foldcord.blogspot.com/2008/11/take-care-of-pennies-and-dollars-will.html - "When my mom first graduated high school, she worked in a lawyer's office. The lawyer was an older Jewish man that always said, "Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves."

In another blog, http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf41044786.tip.html, was written "A wise person once said, 'Watch the pennies, and the dollars will take care of themselves.' I have proven that to be true, and I hope you will, too........."

So you see, it has been attributed to both a Jew and also to a wise man. So, what's your beef? It is a noble thing to do. But you, in your stereotyping way, stated, "...but in typical Republican fashion these clowns have heard the word 'pennies' and a message of thrift and immediately both their synapses fired at once and the word 'Jews' bubbled to the top of their consciousness."

To me, it was meant as a compliment, to be wise and frugal.

I learned a long time ago, you can't debate ignorance.

The problem that this episode exposes is not one of anti-Semitism or hate speech, but one of prejudice. Prejudice is not necessarily hatred - it may even be a positive regard, as in the case of these two men. Similarly, people of Asain background have sometimes been regarded as hard-working, just as Mexicans and blacks have, on a negative note, been regarded as lazy, and people from Appalachia as stupid. The point of prejudice is that it pre-judges a person or people, relying on stereotypes. This gives a false view and valuing of people, and can lead to disasterous consequences. The difference between someone of a particular group who uses prejudicial statements of members of their own group, and someone from outside the group making similar statements, is that the person who is within that group is more likely that the one outside to know that the stereotype is false, and members of their group more complex than the stereotype admits. I worked for a while with kids in an institutional setting. Black kids were always referring to one another as "N....;" while still not appropriate, there is a profound difference between their doing so and a white kid using the same epithet.

The only stupidity that I see here are those that think that Merwin and Ulmer said something stupid or hateful. As I read and reread their quoted remarks about the frugalness of wealthy Jews, I see nothing that anyone should take issue with.

Also, they did not say it was a fact but rather that, "There is a saying....."

But, if it is a fact, it is something that they should be proud of. It doesn't say that they are cheap or stingy, but rather that they are being frugal as proven by their praise for Sen. DeMint for not jumping on the bandwagon to further spend our way into oblivion. Webster defines frugal as being "not wasteful; not spending freely or unnecessarily; saving; economical."

It seems that people, as soon as they see an ethnic group mentioned, start to figure out a way to try and make it look offensive instead of engaging their brains and reading it the way it was intended. I'm disappointed that Merwin and Ulmer, because of the outrage, succumbed to issuing apologies. All you thin-skinned ethnic groups should apologize to them for making an issue out of it.

When your economic and political philosophy have their genesis in a distrust of education ("It's elitist!") and independent sources of information ("The Media is biased!") and a strong desire to get yours (or your group's) and let the devil take the hindmost, you tend to end up with a constituency that is ignorant, stupid, and greedy - a recipe for evil if I've ever seen one.

It's possible that living under a siege mentality took an enormous toll, but it's also possible that SC had that mentality and the militarization was simply the effect.

As a white person who has lived in the North and the South, what you describe as stupidity sounds more to me like fear and resentment. For three centuries, non-wealthy whites in the South knew that their skin color kept them one notch above blacks in the social hierarchy. Any attempt to lift the status of blacks (abolition, civil rights) was misinterpreted as persecution by those whites, particularly since those attempts were often made by people outside the South. That sense of persecution seems to permeate white Southern culture.

It's not a matter of whether it's hateful for them per se, but it's a matter of perpetuating stereotypes which fuel hatred among others (should we see how many racists there are in South Carolina?).

The thing is, people who don't think of others in stereotypes as a rule, don't think to SAY stupid things like this.

People who DO think of others in stereotypes, whether the more offensive kind or not (if that's possible), DO say things like this and likely _are_ racist - they're just not telling you.

So, was it racist in this instance? Well, stupid often coincides with racist - take the backwards swastika someone made into a lawn with Obama's name - and the GOP is full of people who are constantly "mis-speaking," but it's hard to believe from people who's sole profession is to watch what they say.

Rabbi Hirschfield is too forgiving. He is absolutely right that the comments of these two troglodytes represent stupidity more than hate. But at what level does stupidity itself become such an agent of evil that it becomes unforgivable? I believe that you can make an excellent argument that stupidity more than outright hate explains the Nazi era in Germany.

The degree of ignorance, blindness, insensitivity, and isolation from reality displayed by the two Republicans is mind-numbing. What does it tell you about the insularity of the world in which they live that they could so innocently issue such a stereotypical public statement? Does Mr. Hirschfield not realize that they are one goose-step away from supporting discrimination and violence against their political opponents, or against anyone who disagrees with them on any issue? These are precisely the type of "ordinary" Americans who show up at town hall meetings on health care reform, absolutely convinced that the righteousness of their cause gives them the right to engage in disruptive tactics like screaming, interrupting opposing speakers, and refusing to yield the microphone. This is the mentality of people who believe it's OK to murder doctors who perform abortions, or provide sanctuary to those who commit the murder, and who want to forbid the teaching of evolution in our schools in favor of anti-intellectual creationism and intelligent design. It's a mentality that has waged a relentless war on God's truth, i.e., on science.

I'll bet you that these two reflect the consensus mentality in their communities. This is stupidity, yes--but it's the same stupidity that produces a Republican Party in the South that roundly denounces the federal government as a matter of course--while the South, more than any other region, reaps the benefits of federal largesse. It's the mentality that sends Representatives and Senators to Washington to have their health care provided by a federally-funded health insurance program--while they preach the gospel of the benefits of capitalist health care to their constituents. It's a mentality that believes that it is under siege and at its heart rests on lies, hypocrisy, cowardice, bullying, and unjustified resentment.

More to the point, let me as a native white Southerner warn Rabbi Hirschfield. It's the same stupidity that led to 100 years of segregation, discrimination, and lynchings. He discounts it to his peril.

No one thinks a broad statement like "Jews watch their pennies" is universally true down to last of 15 million individuals, just that its an ethnic trait.

My ethnic group is often called quiet, industrious, humorless and methodical. Compared to some other ethnic groups, I think that's all true, even though I have relatives of whom it's not.

So Jews object to being POSITIVELY stereotyped?

While I'm not Jewish, I would say that all stereotyping is ultimately negative in effect, even when it sounds positive. That's because stereotyping ignores and negates the individual. Plus, the specific stereotyping under discussion here is more often treated as negative rather than positive, to suggest that Jews are out to cheat or swindle others.

At some point, our society needs to overcome its fear of 'prejudice' and allow that years of subjective observation might have some validity.

Hmmm, "Carstonio"?? Where have we seen that name before? Let us check our list. Yes indeed, there it is.

I like Rabbi Hirschfields commentary here, and he raises good questions. Yes we have cultural and racial stereotypes, and most peoples PC response to that is 'how crude and rude, and wrong'. But cultural and racial stereotypes, like mythology and old wives tales and superstitions, often have some grounding in the truth.

"Are they really guilty of anti-Semitism, as many in both the Jewish community and in the Democratic Party have suggested? And have they not tapped in to a myth in which many Jews take pride, at least privately?"

"But we are also very proud of the enormous financial success of the American Jewish community, and of the fiscal responsibility which has often contributed to it."

This is a sanitized and more careful and respectful version of 'penny pincher' or 'cheap' or 'Scrooge'.

Every racial and cultural group has stereotypes, but are they all wrong, or are they or at least some of them right, though cast in a less benevolent light? I think the second. Think Polish/Pollack jokes, derision against blacks, Japanese, Arabs, Mexicans, Italians, Muslims, Americans, French, Indians, and any other that you want to. Stereotypes abound, are often negative connotations, but are often based in an observable tendency or trait of the people that is cast negatively.

There seems nothing wrong with fiscal responsibility, or even stinginess for that matter, especially when that trait serves to better ones' position in life. But for those that do not have, or paid less attention to the pennies and so have few dollars, it is something to envy or hate.

There is a clear gap between how we posture to show ourselves in the 'best' light publicly even if we may act well differently when with our own tribe.

Prejudice is not the same thing as hate. I suspect that Merwin and Ulmer have no ill will toward Jews but still believe in some of the old stereotypes. My suspicion might change if I heard them echoing the more pernicious Protocols-type myths, or if they used anti-Semitic code like "anti-Christian entertainment elite."

Is "penny pinching" being lost to intermarriage with Gentiles? Maybe now we Gentiles with this new blood will finally balance our budgets??

Unfortunately, there are too few "penny pinchers" around these days to make all of us Gentiles properly balanced:

Religion Adherents
Christianity 2.1 billion
Islam 1.5 billion
Secularism/irreligious/agnostic/atheism
1.1 billion
Hinduism 900 million
Chinese traditional religion 394 million
Buddhism 376 million
Primal-indigenous 300 million
African traditional/diasporic 100 million
Sikhism 23 million
Juche 19 million
Spiritism 15 million
Judaism 14 million

Or maybe we should simply follow their good example!!!!

This reminds me of the scene in Annie Hall in which Alvy is talking to his friend about hearing someone and taking offense. Did you becomes D'Jew in his paranoia.
