The Faith Divide

Jews and Muslims: Poetry and Possibility

My best friend is a Chicago-based Jewish poet named Kevin Coval who sees in the Scripture a moment of holy possibility:

Isaac and Ishmael, sons of the Prophet Abraham by different wives, separated due to a family quarrel, become respectively the fathers of the Jews and the Muslims, and reunite to bury the patriarch.

In his poem, “When Ishmael Comes Home”, Kevin imagines what happens when the two brothers meet to put their father in the Earth. Here are the last few stanzas, with Kevin speaking in the voice of Ishmael (click here to listen to Kevin performing this piece):

together we will dig this grave brother
lay the bones of a man I never knew
cover earth over him, say Kaddish
we will mourn together my brother
did he tell you my name, that I look like you
love you, dreamed to have a brother
at night sleeping curled under my lineage

my Lord is Allah, is Yahweh, is what saved you
atop the mount and damned me to wander, but
I am strong, brother, do not weep cuz the patriarch
is gone, death is rebirth is time to build new temples
tell stories of our father, sing his praises, mend his curses
stand over his memory and decide where to move from here

Isaac, I have returned
my shoes are off in your home
my open palm extends to you
Salaam, Shalom, in peace
Brother, will you take my hand

Dear Humans,
Can you show me the word Judaism in the OT?
Can you show me the word Christianity in the OT/NT?

Why follow a religion whose name is absent from its own holly text?!

There is only one true religion: Islam.

Just follow the Holly Bible and it will show you the way.
Go back to the original text (bypassing the Evangelists!)

Here is my proof:

See Verse 16 in Ch 5 of Song of Songs at this location
http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt3005.htm

Look at the Hebrew text. You will see the Name Mohammad (מַחֲמַדִּים) there! Just remove the "i" (י) and "m" (ם) used for making a noun plural.

follow מַחֲמַד !!!

"all of us to be more compassionate toward others - all others - no exceptions"

Rachel,

Compassion without the anchor of wisdom and knowledge is meaningless. Mercy requires judgment.

Would you sit with the Muslims persecuting Sikhs in Afghanistan? Their food is delicious too?

Google -Afghanistan Sikhs- to follow the world news opinion.

Sat sri akal, Rebecca.

I appreciate your comments but did you even read my post?

I wrote no negative thoughts about Sikhs or any other spirituality/belief. I didn't mean any harm or cruel words toward anyone. It's terrible that any group be shunned, mocked or treated badly. Bury or cremation. Turban or scarf. It's all fine with me. Whatever floats your boat... And if I was to hear someone make fun of a young man who happened to be wearing a turban, a young woman in a beautiful scarf, or a fellow wearing a 'Jesus Rocks' shirt, rest assured I would speak up. And I hope you would too.

A very dear friend I made in college is a Sikh from Punjab. We had many discussions and a group of us went to the nearest gurdwara on occasion. Those were fantasic experiences, Rebecca! Everyone was quite welcoming, very kind and I ate some of the best food I've ever tasted!

I wish things were better for the people I read about in the article. Rebecca, I agree with you, no one should have to deal with that sort of treatment.

If you or any other readers received a negative impression from me, then I am sorry.

My point was for all of us to be more compassionate toward others - all others - no exceptions.

By the way, from which news source did you copy/paste the article?

Wake up, Rachel.

You apparently still don't know what is happening in some Gurdwaras or of the suffering of Sikhs in Afghanistan. Please learn and speak out against this evil:

Life is Hellish for Afghan Sikhs

Kabul, September 27
Persecuted by an increasingly hostile local community, a few thousand hapless Sikhs left behind in Afghanistan, have now been forced to cremate their dead in the compounds of gurdwaras in this strife-torn city.

The attempt to cremate a body last week in Kabul led to major tension between the Sikhs and the local community following which the last rites were performed under heavy security cover. The predominantly Muslim local community has become increasingly hostile to the ritual of cremation considering it as blasphemous.

The two Sikh MPs in the Afghanistan Parliament, Avtar Singh and Ravinder Singh, raised the issue with President Hamid Karzai. It remains to be seen whether the Karzai regime can give them some solace and reduce their misery.

Barely 4000, the Afghani Sikhs are at the crossroads of history. The locals label them as "kaafir" while in India, they are dubbed as "Kabuli". This means they have been virtually disowned by both the countries as they live a life of hell in Afghanistan.

"Mr Karzai is extremely fond of Sikhs and Hindus and is very sensitive towards their problems but he cannot do much to stop the local animosity. The only option which, again, is not easy for us is to migrate to India," says a tearful Amrik Singh, a quack selling herbal medicines, who has never been to India.

The Sikhs were a strong and thriving community of about one lakh prior to the turmoil following 9/11. They now live under constant fear.

Though the Sikhs consider Afghanistan as their 'watan', they no longer wish to stay here. With most of the affluent Sikhs and Hindus having migrated to India a few years back, the ones still here do not have the resources to migrate to India as they have no relatives or ties back home. In fact, none of them has ever travelled to India, leave aside Punjab.

"Each day is a living hell as we are humiliated. Our children are mocked at for wearing turbans," says 60 year-old Raj Singh from Rozgan area. He says his family has already moved to Tilak Nagar in Delhi and the minute he is able to sell his property for a decent price, he will leave Afghanistan forever.

The Sikhs and Hindus are still present in sizeable numbers in the Kabul, Jalalabad, Gazni, Kandahar, Khost and Kundaz provinces of Afghanistan. In Kabul, they live mostly in Karta-e-Parwan, where they have a gurudwara.

"My children went to Delhi to attend a relative’s wedding but are simply not willing to come back. They say they will beg in India but will not return to Kabul," says Amrik Singh.

The Sikhs say they teach their children only Gurmukhi at home. Since they are hated and scoffed at in school, most of them have left regular schools. "We sound exactly like Afghanis and can barely understand Hindi or Punjabi. We wear turbans and go to gurdwara daily to attend kirtan and langars," says 35 year-old Mohar Singh.

Most of the Sikhs are petty shopkeepers and do not have resources to move to India to start life afresh in another country.

A majority of the Sikhs agree that the older Afghanis had love and affection for them and there was complete harmony. It is only recently that there is growing intolerance and fanaticism.

"I am pained at the plight of the Sikhs and Hindus and the deplorable condition they are living in. I have not been able to sleep since a six-month old girl was cremated in the compound of the gurdwara where I am staying," says Dr Indira, a gynaecologist working in a reputed corporate hospital of Delhi. She came here for two days to trace her roots but has stayed back to comfort the pained community.

India 's Ambassador in Kabul, Rakesh Sood, says there is no question of going back to India as these Sikhs and Hindus have always been in Afghanistan. "India cannot extend them financial help or assist in migration simply because they share a common faith with us," he remarks. He says there has been some problem over cremations but that can be resolved by giving them an alternative site.

It is the growing intolerance and economic consideration, which are probably making the locals so resentful of the Sikh and Hindu presence in Afghanistan. "One country says you are from the other nation and vice versa leaving us in the lurch”, says Raj Singh.

A beautiful poem, Eboo...

Thank you.

I'm not sure about Ted, but I look forward to the day when we will be able to coexist. An open mind and an open heart will bring a person true happiness.

Open discussions without accusations can inspire anyone to learn from another person or group of people and from the past.

Let's not lump people together and cast hate on what we don't know.

Whether you pick up a Torah, Bible, Koran, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, pray/meditate to mother nature, or read The Humanist, we can learn a great deal from each other.

The ignorance and the hate must stop.

I grew up in the Bible belt in a town where 99-percent of the residents look just like me. I didn't know what a gurdwara was. I had never seen a mosque, synagoge or hindu temple. And I had never before met anyone from Russia, India, Thailand, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, etc. When I went to college in the mid-west, I was fortunate enough to meet people from all over the world. They were intelligent, compassionate, remarkable human beings. I learned about cultures, traditions, and religions.

And guess what? Despite our unique qualities, we're all very much the same!

The friends I made changed my life forever. They'll always be in my heart and never far from my thoughts. Although I've lost touch with many of them after we all moved, I have been able to bring to my hometown a different mindset. Perhaps I've rubbed off on a few of my "kountry-kousins."

At any rate, those people gave me a different perspective of people and of life.

And that's something that is truley valuable.

Tarik:

Mohammed was frightened when "Gabriel" first appeared to him. He believed he was demonized. His first wife convinced him otherwise and he became a pawn of the devil.

Satan's mission is to steal, kill, destroy. This is why Muslims are suffering loss and so admire and desire death (martyrdom).

A ban on all Muslim immgration to the west ( USA, Canada and Western Europe) will benefit both the West and the Muslims.

It will benefit the West because by banning the immigration of Muslims, the root cause of terroristic acts inside the West will have been eliminated for the most part. All terror acts in West are commited and will be commited by Muslm immigrants and their descendants. By banning Muslims the West will no longer have to spend trillions in sending armies into Muslim countries to fight the Muslim terrorists and the regimes that provide aid to the terrorists. Almost all major terror acts have had their genesis in Pakistan with substantial aid from saudi Arabia. Instead the West will need to spend a very small amount keeping guard against Muslims in the West. Sending western armies into Muslim countries has been a failed measure for the simple reason that the general Muslim popupaltion supports, actively and passively, Islamic terrorism. Had the Muslim population been against terrorism bin Laden would have been caught a long time ago.

The ban will have to accompanied by giving financial aid to some of the poorer Muslim countries with the proviso that the aid be used to develop secular education in the Muslim countries. An impoverished Muslim country like Bangladesh or like Pakistan will welcome $10 billion annually because it will provide much needed foreign exchange and it will raise the standards of education in these countries if the aid is properly used.

By not allowing Muslims to migrate to the West, the Muslims in those countries will be forced to fight for reform of both Islam and of the political systems in the countries. At present it is too easy for the Muslims. At the slightest sign of oppression millions of Muslims flee to West into the arms of eager western liberals because for the latter their own reputation as do-gooders is more important than the safety and security of the West.

Western Europe fought against the repression by the Christian church because there was no means of escape. Had the USA been a refuge for immigrants in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Christian church would not have reformed because the oppressed people of Europe would have fled to America. With their backs against the wall Europeans forced the church and the clergy to reform Christianity.

A ban on Muslim immigration need not apply to all Muslim countries, at least in the beginning. Some countries such as Turkey would be exempt because very few Turks have indulged in terroristic activities. Malaysia would be another example. However stricter standards should apply for allowing immigrants from even these countries.

The following countries would be however the prime targets because the level of terroristic activity in their population has been very high:

Saud Arabia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Morrocco, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Algeria, Iran, Iraq, Syria.

India, which has a population of nearly 200 million, would also be subject to stricter standards. The Muslims of India have increasingly participated in terroristic activities, most recently in Australia and Britain. A ban on Muslims from India would also be appropriate.

"And Abraham gave ALL that he had to Isaac. But to the sons of the concubines that Abraham had, he gave gifts and sent them away from his son while he yet lived, eastward, to the east country." (Genesis 25:5-6)

Ishmael was the son of Hagar, a concubine.

"All" means "all". There's no room for error here. The birthright, the land, and everything else were given to Abraham's son, Isaac. ALL of it.

Yes, the seed of Ishmael was also to become a nation [Gen 21:13], a great nation [Gen 21:18], etc... however, that doesn't mean that it means here in the land of Israel, which CLEARLY and EXCLUSIVELY belongs to the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Now, the tiny land of Israel is around 1/10th of 1% of the Middle East:

http://www.iris.org.il/sizemaps/arabwrld.htm

That leaves the other 99.9% for the great nation of Ishmael.

THIS is the basis for peace between us: Ishmael's 99.9% for them, and Isaac's 1/10th of 1% for him. Isaac has no problem with this. Why does Ishmael?

I hope that Ishmael can get over it, because otherwise he will end up with LESS than the 99.9% that he presently occupies- not more.

Peace.

Muhammad was successful only in Arabia and he was lucky. Had more people picked up arms agianst him he may have been defeated. He did lose the battle at Uhud and his face was disfigured. That is why this vain pedophile banned all his images.

It was his successors who were successful. They carried on his promise of women and loot to the Muslim bandits who attacked other lands. Islam was the only cult that promised the victors women for sex.

Muhammad was not a great man. he was influential but not great. His teachings are mediocre. His moral character was abysmal. His success was more like Hitler's except Hitler was unfortunate to run into the US.

Now Islam has run into the USA. Islam will be eradicated.

Tarik, the Torah was written LONG before Mohammad was a born. Mohammad is no better than Joesph Smith. Both in their own fantasy have led 100's of millions of ignorant people astray.
AGAIN you can't deny the fact that the Torah was written LONG before the quran AND in fact if Mohammad went to any university today and wrote the quran he'd be expelled for plagerism.

Siddhartha also equally successful, while espousing an opposing philosophy of non-violence. Ghandhi led approx. 1 billion people to freedom and stood up to the greatest empire the world had known by teaching people to reject violence and spin cloth. Muhammed's "success" was driven by death and destruction as much as a philosophy of life. And if that is the barometer of success, then look no further than Ghengis Khan to see a more successful man (see genetic studies to witness a true enduring legacy). Others to consider: Einstien, Leonardo da Vinci, Socrates, Confucious, Jesus of Nazareth, Abraham, Thomas Edison, Martin Luther. Mohammed's influence is undeniable, but as are the influence of many others as equal in stature.

The oldest argument on the planet stems from that day! One side swears god spared Isaac, the other Ishmael! Does it really matter more than the FACT both groups adhere to the Faith of Abraham, the Father, and the One True God!?

WARS are faught in God's name over EARTHLY things!

Mecca is, was, and always will be the Holy City to the Abrahamic Faiths! I believe that Hindu's Jews and Christians are able to SHARE in PEACE the Site, with the Islamic Faiths that encompass it! WE are no longer the 10 and 12 Year old Crusaders of the middle ages! We are Champions of Peace! We are(Some of us) very Enlightened and very Open-Minded and TOLERANT!

Even if a Christian service is performed, and Wine is needed in our symbolism, We have developed Alcohol Free Wine! Look Ma!-No Alcohol!(Or God, or even Muslim Authorities, if that is the case!).

Understanding, and even Cross Referrencing, can help us all to a better understanding of our roles in God's universe, and the purpose it has for us as it's caretakers of this World!

Salom, and God Bless!-Heck, let's throw in a Yod-He-Vau-He, and a Hare Krishna too!

The question is often asked " what should non-Muslims do to win the hearts and minds of Muslims?" when the question that should really be asked is " what should Muslims do to win the hearts and minds of non-Muslims?".

Muslims are now universally despised for several reasons.

1) The repeated acts of terrorism against non-Muslims and the genenally implicit approval by the general populace of non-Muslims for these acts and the readiness to blame the US and the Jews for the acts. To this day most Muslims believe that the Jews orchestrated 9/11.

2) Their refusal to integrate into the societies that have made life so good for them, especially the west, and that have allowed them escape the misery that their own Muslim societies with their allegiance to an outdated Islamic system have inflicted on them.

3) Most importantly the internet and recent publications has revealed the truth about Islam and its founder, Muhammad. It is now well known that Muhammad was a pschopath who indulged in sex with children in his fifties, was a slave owner, had fathered an illegitimate son with his slave girl, 15 year old Maria who was also a Christian, carried out ethnic cleansing of Jews in Arabia and stole half of Arabia from them, insulted God by inventing Allah and making this evil god the sole deity for Muslims.

4) Their refusal to condemn atrocities in Iraq, Muslims upon Muslims and also the shameful Islamic apartheid practised in Saudi Arabia where non-Muslims may not enter Mecca and Medina, may not openly worship anywhere in the kingdom, may not build churches, synagogues and other places of worship in Saudi Arabia. Muslims give implicit approval for the Islamic apartheid by continuing to do the hajj to Mecca, thereby saying that " the apartheid is fine with us".

The Muslims can do the following and, although it will take time, eventually Muslims will have won some respect from non-Muslims.

1) Declare that Islam was not revealed by God and admit that Islam is a harmful faith. Muslims should condemn outright Muhammad and Islam. Muslims should stop insulting God by associating Muhammad and Allah with Him.

2) Stop doing the hajj. By doing so they will send a powerful message that they will not tolerate apartheid. If Saudi Arabia stops the apartheid and the first church is built in Mecca and in Medina, then the hajj may be resumed.

3) Return half of Saudi Arabia, the western half of Saudi Arabia, to its rightful owners, the Jews. Relocate all Muslims from palestine and the West Bank to Muslim countries.

4) Agree that all Muslim immigration to non-Muslims countries be halted until secular democratic societies are built in all Muslim countries. This may take many years. Right now it is too easy for Muslims to escape the oppression in Muslim societies by escaping to non-Muslim countries, especially to the West. They have no incentive to fight oppression at home.

It will take time. But eventually Muslims may become an integral part of civilized human society.

Eboo,
I have nothing really to add to this post other than to say that I really like that poem. It is always a joy to have you and Kevin visit the university and it has been my pleasure to hear Kevin recite this poem many times. Thanks for posting it again here.

So here is the question: how do we create these moments? In places where humanity is blinded by pain, how do we create a place to speak, to recite, to rhyme, to resonate with one another? How does the interfaith vision here move beyond the here to there? Just wanted to hear your thoughts on how we can begin to make this vision a reality in some of the tougher places in the world.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Price
