Gujarat committing atrocities on tribal Muslims in Dangs

NEW DELHI, Sept 19: If someone felt after the Gujarat carnage was over, the riot affected Muslims are being taken care of by the state government, Dangs village provides an insight into how the complicit Gujarat administration is committing atrocities on the tribal Muslims and forcing them to get converted for living a safe life.
The Combat Human Rights Forum's fact-finding team visited the distressed Muslim tribal villagers in the Dangs district of southern Gujarat. These villagers have been forced into the forest by a complicit Gujarat administration for the last ten days.
The team found that more than 150 houses have been damaged by brutal police action forcing children and women to flee into the forest. DSP Pathak and District Magistrate have been served with a fax notice by the CHRF team warning that the action of the state administration amounted to a complete violation of the Gujarat High Court order.
The order calls for a status quo and has been obtained by the aggrieved Muslims who have been living in this village for the past hundred years. Ironically on Friday September 5, Teesta Setalvad had personally spoken to IG Surat Range Shivananad Jha (who also heads the Godhra re-Investigations by the Special Investigation Team appointed by the Supreme Court) and he had "said that the situation was normal and no atrocities had been committed on the people." The report of the CHRF team belies this assurance.
The CHRF team consisted of senior Dalit Panther activist and journalist, Suresh Bhonsale, activists Sumedh Jadhav and Avinash Kamble (Communalism Combat, Mumbai). CHRF team faxed a letter at 9.30 a.m. this morning warning that torture, beating, physical intimidation and forcible conversion allegedly also by forest officials, taluka officials, policemen egged on by fanatic extremists like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad amounted to outright contempt and violation of the abovementioned court order.
The team that arrived in Dangs on Wednesday evening spent the night in the village and assuaged the distressed villagers. Bhonsale told the team that the condition of women and children was terrible and they had been starved for nearly ten days. It was reported to team that a battery of forest officers and police descended on the village of Nandapeda near Ahwa in the Dangs, Gujarat.
They pulled out the doors, windows, wooden ballis which support the roof and wood from the roof of the huts of the villagers on the pretext that forest department had decided that it was illegal wood and they must recover it. The Gujarat ATS meanwhile rounded up a few people and conducted intimidatory arrests.
Nandapeda is the only village with majority Muslim population in the Dangs district. It is considered the poorest district in the whole of India. The families have been living in the village for over 100 years. From the reports made orally, the CHRF team has concluded that state government officials have has been pressurizing the Muslims to convert to the Hindu religion or face eviction from their land.
Some of the residents of this village moved the Gujarat High Court against the government's pressure of converting and changing their religion. The Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) had assisted this legal initiative and a stay obtained from the Gujarat High Court.
According to CHRF, the shocking thing about the developments in Dangs is that the petitioners had alleged a month ago that the state of Gujarat officials were behaving in an unconstitutional fashion and coercing poor people to convert to Hinduism. The petitioners were Ahmedbhai Dalaabhai Vani, Noormahammed Musabhai Vani, Ibrahimbhai Kalubhai Vanzari, Yusuf Bhai Rasoolbhai Aagevan, Razzak Radakiya Nayak, Ahmed Radakiya Nayak, Saiyed Danubhai Vani, Gafoorbhai Ismailbhai Chauhan, Ibrahimbhai Ahmedbhai, Shabbirbhai Bhaliyabhai Vani, Ghulam Rustam Vani, The petitioners have stated that they are residing in village Nandanpeda of district Daang since long back and the land, upon which the petitioners are residing, is in possession of the petitioners and their ancestors since about 100 years.
They have further alleged that the In-Charge Secretary of the Dang District had called the petitioners at the Circuit House at Ahwa in Dang at 4.30 pm on June 13, 2008 in presence of the Sarpanch of Village Nanderpeda and others and asked them to change their religion and faith and convert themselves as "Adivasi".
He has further threatened them that if they defy the authorities they shall have to face 'dire' consequences and would be forcefully evacuated. Other Respondents in the special application were The Collector of the District, and the Mamlatdar.
CHRF further says that there are unconfirmed reports that on June 13, 2008 a senior officer had called a meeting in Ahwa and asked them to change their religion or vacate the land. CHRF has claimed that it is in possession of photographs showing the damages and a VHP leader making inflammatory speeches.
CHRF has also written a letter to Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention to undo the wrong being perpetuated by the Gujarat administration.

CCHRF is in possession of photographs showing the damages and a VHP leader making inflammatory speeches. Many of the poor people have been put in jail.
After this meeting police and forest officers had been harassing them. Police have been searching old cases registered against any person of the community and asking them to furnish bail papers. The police targeted 33 people against whom some petty crime or a scuffle with the neighbors was registered.
Claiming that repeated representation before authorities for regularization of their land has been in vain, petitioners requested the court to restrain the government from pressurizing them to convert from their religion. Justice Jayant Panchal had in July sought explanation in this regard from the secretary in-charge, district collector and the village sarpanch.
After hearing all parties, Justice Anant Dave admitted the case on September 11, 2008 and ordered to maintain status quo on the disputed land. On the next day the police captured approximately 80 villagers for transporting cattle into Maharashtra and also apprehended some villagers who were going on motorcycles using the reason of cow slaughter, though there were no cattle in the tempo.
The villagers gathered. There was a clash between the villagers and the police. People were beaten on both the sides. One policeman was also beaten up. Police then opened fire and a number of villagers got bullet injuries. They were taken to Ahwa civil hospitals. The relatives were not allowed to meet them. Police apprehended eight villagers for beating a policeman and though a local lawyer went for their bail, it was not given.
Next day the police came and in the name of combing operation attacked and ransacked the village. Villagers were beaten up brutally including women and children. All men fled to the jungles. The police not only took away all the goods but before going they poured kerosene into the eatable good so that they could not eat anything too.
VHP proposed a rally on September 15. After a lot of pressure the VHP rally was stopped but they declared a Bandh on September 16, 2008. The VHP gave a deadline to the collector it is heard to get the village vacated. (Inflammatory speeches by the VHP are in our possession)
We urge that urgent action is taken in this regard.

I wish to expand on this statement. Submission has been historically to the edicts of imams and other Muslim religious clerics. Those have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. There are many rules in the Muslim religion that cover every aspect of life. Those rules are expanding due to the arising complexities of life. Now a person can get a fatwa(edict) by phone for a price, off course. The bombshells of the near past were “The Nursing of Adults”, “Urine of Camels as Medicine” and the “Marriage to Infants” and many other similar topics.

Why are evangelicals so excited about Sarah Palin--the Vice Presidential candidate? And what role the churches play in this political process? Do they separate religion with politics in reality?

What views on religion , politics and ethnicity played in our history? Did you ever study the views of our founding fathers from Benjamin Franklin to Thomas Jefferson? Thank God Thomas Jefferson's liberal views prevailed?

Teaching the compatibility of the Qur'an and the Constitution is certainly a movement in the right direction for Muslims, in contrast to those who proclaim the superiority of the Qur'an. But W.D. Muhammad and his like-minded adherents are dissidents within Islam. They do not represent mainstream, orthodox Islam.

And the devil's in the details. I pose once more my five questions on this very topic of how Islam meshes with the fundamental principles of liberal democracy--the five questions that, in all my years of asking them, only one credible Muslim has ever bothered to try to answer. Pay particular attention to question #5. Would anyone hazard to state what W.D. Muhammad would have said in answer to these questions?

What would the most authoritative voices of Islam say in answer to the five questions posed below. That is, don't give me your personal viewpoint. I want you to tell us what the most authoritative voices of orthodox Islam would say.

Here are the questions:
1.Does Islam allow for the separation of church and state?
2.Does Islam allow for the full legal equality of women?
3.Does Islam allow for religious pluralism? For example, if a member of the Egyptian soccer team got up tomorrow morning and announced he was converting from Islam to Christianity and changing his name from Mohammad Ali to Cassius Clay, what do the authoritative voices of Islam say should be his fate?

5.Does Islam allow for the publication of a scholarly book alleging that Mohammad was a fraud?

(Alternatively, instead of imagining these questions posed to the authoritative voices of Islam, imagine the question is, “What do Islamic textbooks used in the teaching of Muslim students in America say in answer to these questions?”)

The answers to these questions will reveal whether there is some debate among Muslims over the future of their religion. Or whether even orthodox Islam can be accommodated to a Western liberal, pluralistic society.

there was flashing lightning for them" .

Isaia 21: 13-16 speaks on an Oracle about Arabia. This prediction is historically about migration of propphet Mohammad and Followers to
Medina and a War ( war of Al-Bader) that was waged by Meccan pagans against Prophet and followers after ayear in which Prophet and
Followers in Medina became victorious.

This is a great piece. The hateful demagogues that jump on every comment thread here are so far on the wrong side of history that you need pay them no heed. One of the difficulties in the American Muslim experience is that racial segregation, which Islam so beautifully helps to erase in other societies, still finds itself in the attendance of mosques and Islamic centers here due to the country's difficult history with race. By rightfully honoring all of the great Muslim American leaders - including the many who happen to be African American - all Muslim Americans can be united in Islam's honorable teachings and come together to pay our respects. Politics is a dirty game. Not too long ago, Hindu Janta Party workers got caught making bombs in their homes in India's big city, Kanpur.
