The Faith Divide

Philanthropy for Fear

So now the Muslim-hating film Obsession has shown up in the mailboxes of students at the University of North Carolina. Add that to the 28 million copies the Clarion Fun sent out as an insert in Sunday newspapers in swing states a few weeks ago.

You've got to wonder how much all this costs. I mean, there's the price of materials, the cost of postage and buying the space in the papers, the expense of the staff who designed the send-it-to-swing-states strategy, and of course the filmmaker's fee.

Let's call it tens of millions of dollars, all told.

I guess no price is too high when your goal is to make people afraid of their Muslim neighbors.

Why is there is so much money out there to fund fear and hatred, and so little to support efforts that promote understanding and cooperation.

I admit that I have a stake in this. My organization, the Interfaith Youth Core, runs projects that bring people from different faith backgrounds together to serve others. As Executive Director, my job is to go to foundations and private individuals to raise funds to support our projects.

We've grown over the years from a $35, 000 grant in the summer of 2002 to a $2.5 million budget and a staff that has run programs on six continents, literally bringing tens of thousands of people from different faiths together in cooperation projects.

We're pretty big for an interfaith organization, but our budget is laughable next to the amount of money spent on things like the Obsession project.

Think of it this way:

If you own a hotel, and the property next to yours puts in a swimming pool, you know you have to install one that's bigger and more impressive to stay in business.

If you're running for office and your opponent out-fundraises you two to one, your chances of winning are slim to none.

The same principle holds true in interfaith relations. If the religious totalitarians and the clash of civilizations supporters have all the resources they need, and the people pushing interfaith cooperation are making do on Scooby snacks, the result is obvious. Osama bin Laden didn't build Al Qaeda on bake sales.

It takes money to build barriers that divide people.
It takes money to build bombs that kill people.
It takes money to build bridges that unite people.

If you're wondering why the clash of civilizations paradigm feels like it's gaining ground, just remember this: When you take a knife to a gun fight, you lose.

Someone asked Arif:

“Why do you hate muslims so much?
Why would you want others to hate them?”
Arif answered:
“Actually I don't, I only hate Islam. It is an evil doctrine, it is the cause of poverty, hate, and the most backward nations.”

Below is a comment by Ali Sina, an Iranian ex-Muslim, that confirms Arif’s assertions.

“The cause of the poverty and ignorance of Muslims is Islam. It is the five times prayers, it is the one month fasting, it is the reading of the Quran instead of science, it is the wasting of people's time teaching them the Islamic way of defecation, urination and copulation, and it is observing all those stupid Islamic rituals that has made Muslims backward, lazy and poor. “
-------------
Their holy book teaches

“That the mountains are like pegs, holding the Earth from shaking.
That the sun rises and sets in murky waters
That sperms are generated in the spine
That the first thing created in fetus is the bone and then this bone is covered with flesh.
That there is a winged horsy with a human face that took Muhammad to the heaven.
That Muhammad cleft asunder the Moon.
That the sky is supported by invisible pillars.
That the stars are adornments hanging from the lower heaven while the Moon is above them.
That the “shooting stars” are missiles that Allah and his angels throw at the Jinns when they climb on each others’ shoulders to eavesdrop on the conversation of the “Exalted Assembly”.
That the Earth is spread like a bed.
Oh yeah! All these “scientific facts” and more are in the Quran. The non-Muslims read the Quran and then go and discover and invent new things. I wonder why Muslims who read the Quran more can't do that! “

Submission is a Menace for Human Rights and Contemporary Values. Is it wrong ?

Submission followers and advocaters,

Instead of writing long and empty posts,why dont you reply simply;
Are the events in Film correct or wrong ?

Actually I don't, I only hate Islam. It is an evil doctrine, it is the cause of poverty, hate, and the most backward nations. Pakistan today is worse off than when it was created and all becasue of Islam. Poor, corrupt and on its way to hell in a hay basket... a country created in the name of Islam. Today they breed terrorists and have madrassas all over the over-populated country. They are now engaged in killing themselves.
Muslims I don't hate its their prophet and the hell he created. Muslims are only the infected.

Astoria:

We can only speculate the answers to your questions. My guess is that some people are not worth a dime in the real world and so they sell their soul to the highest bidder.

The highest bidder might be a hate group, or the name of this person is fictitious.

It is not difficult to learn about the culture and religion of any society and then go on the blog and pretend that the person is from that society.

The purpose here seems to be to demonize Islam, hoping that that would be for the benefit of another theocratic country which is conducting warfare against the Muslims and the Palestinians.

Fear-mongering and vilifying the 'other is nothing new Arif-
As you can see- the film inspired such hatred that it compelled some persons to throw toxic chemicals at babies.

The point is not that it is Jewishpeople who produced the film- that point of the article- (if you actually read it) is that whoever made the film is ashamed enough to try and hide their identity.

If I knew any radical muslims- I would try to do my best to de-radicalize them.
But I don't- all the Muslims I know are pretty much like me.
Why do you hate muslims so much?
Why would you want others to hate them?

You're just the other side of the hate coin Arif- don't you see how destructive your own anger and fear are?
How is your hatred more justifed than some radical extremists?

You can have a bias, anyone can- but when that manifests as vilfying and demonizing any "other" it becomes full blown bigotry.
What makes your bigotry superior?

Why when someone criticizes Islam Muslims react by labeling them as Muslim Hate groups or Islamophobes? Why? The film Obsession has relevant content, the content cannot be denied and questions do arise about the believers of Islam, a religion that more and more people are beginning to realize is a dangerous cult. This religion must be handled with care, its own believers can and will turn on the cities, countries and people they live in if they feel their religion is threatened. It takes very little to agitate a Muslim, all one has to do is insult their prophet or draw a picture of him. Instead of telling us what is wrong with the film Obsession, muslims choose to find the author and the funders. No one cares if Jews were responsible for the creation of this film, after all there are more Muslims hating Jews than vice versa. Muslims have hated the Jews since that "last" prophet of theirs. Jews need self preservation and if a film or two can keep concerned citizens aware of the looming threat then so be it; Alhamdulillah! Iran’s leaders and Majority of Muslims openly desire the annihilation of Israel.

It is unfortunate that after viewing the film Obsession a tiny handful of people decided to spray Muslims in their gatherings, giving us a bad name and hijacking our philosophy...shame on them!

The film definitely has two benefits;
1). By viewing the film many will know their enemy; growing radical Islam in the USA.
2). The tiny handful of peaceful Muslims will rally their troops to Jihad against their own radical Muslim brothers to keep them from radicalizing.

Americans can thus one day travel about freely in busses, trains, planes and automobiles without fear of an exploding Muslim fellow citizen near you.

Finally (I hate long posts) here is a quote from London's very own Muslim extremist;
"Ahmed and Abdulla lit and threw petrol bombs as they shouted "Allah hu Akbar", meaning "God is great"."
This form doctors no less, what if people in the UK get to see the film Obsession? Wouldn’t it be food for thought?

Obsession should be aired in all American public schools and colleges.

http://clarionfund.org/

Who, what and where is the Clarion Fund?
Because it was established only recently, the Clarion Fund has not yet filed its first required disclosure (Form 990) with the IRS. It is not disclosing its officers.

The address Clarion used to satisfy the New York Times' requirement that political or opinion advertisements include the advertiser's contact information -- 255 West 36th St., Suite 800, in Manhattan -- turns out to be Grace Corporate Park Executive Suites, an office-space rental operation which also rents "virtual office identity packages" for as little as $75 a month.

The Clarion Fund's only previous known address was that of its incorporator, New York attorney Eli Greenberg, on Madison Avenue. Gregory Ross said the Fund was based in New York and California.

Ross described the fund's staff as "sizeable," but did not give a number. Ross said that Clarion Fund is involved in "three linked efforts: documentary films, online education and college outreach," including sending speakers to campuses.

He also said that Clarion will not disclose its donors' names. He described them as "private American individuals that span the political spectrum."

When pressed for details about his own career, Ross said that "for the privacy of everyone involved, we try to limit" information.

The Clarion Fund refused to disclose its board of directors or donors. New York state documents list Eli David Greenberg, a 49-year-old lawyer with the firm of Freeman and Hertz, as the registered agent for the Clarion Fund.

Fueling the fire

Aside from the content itself, a number of other factors related to the film have fueled the flames of controversy. For one, it has a largely Jewish and pro-Israel distribution network, though Shore is trying to expand the film's appeal. According to news reports, at a screening earlier this year at New York University, distributors of the film required viewers to register at IsraelActivism.com, the Web site of Aish HaTorah's Hasbara Fellowships.

Shore, incidentally, was the director of both Aish HaTorah International and the Hasbara Fellowships, a pro-Israel advocacy group. But he says the film was an independent project.

He also tries to play down the film's Israel connection, simply because "It isn't helpful," he says. "I don't want it to be only Jewish and Israel-related.

"I don't understand why it's biased if Jews are behind the creation of an objective film," he says. "There's nothing wrong with Jews saying the radical Islamists are coming, just like there's nothing wrong with Jews in Nazi Germany saying the Nazis are coming."

Funders anonymous

The issue is further complicated as funding sources for the film remain hazy. Shore and director Wayne Kopping of South Africa are the only figures associated with the film willing to release their real names and appear in media interviews; the executive producer is listed as Peter Mier, while the production manager is listed as Brett Halperin. But Mier and Halperin are just aliases, Shore says. He describes the real Mier as a Canadian Jewish businessman who wanted to do something significant, but asked to remain anonymous for fear of his safety. According to Shore, about 80 percent of the film's $400,000 budget was provided by Mier.

"At the recommendation of a number of experts we worked with in making the film, many of the individuals and organizations who helped make this film possible requested anonymity," Shore explained during an online question-and-answer session on Fox.com. "Tragically, we've seen numerous times the response of the radicals to those who openly expose or disagree with them.

"Radical Muslims are a serious bunch," he later added, "and if they don't like the film, then God forbid..."

Shore also denies early reports that link the film to Honest Reporting, a pro-Israel media watchdog group.

On the organization's site, "Obsession" is described as "Honest Reporting's newest documentary film," but Shore says it's a mistake and that the film's creators have told Honest Reporting to take it off their site "a dozen times."

Richard Silverstein, Tikun Olam, 10/10/1008

Thanks to investigative reporting of Will Evans and reader Robin McLaren, we’ve uncovered the identity of one of the formerly secret producers of Obsession (you’ll recall that the Clarion Fund listed two producers’ names for the film and both were fake). His name is Erik Werth, and he’s a former Clinton Administration advisor for “homeland security issues” (though there was no such concept in the Clinton Administration) and news producer for NBC’s Dateline.

MUSLIM CHILDREN GASSED AT DAYTON MOSQUE AFTER "OBSESSION" VIDEO HITS OHIO

by Chris Rodda
Sun Sep 28, 2008 at 08:50:29 PM PDT

On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West -- the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail -- were distributed by mail in Ohio, a "chemical irritant" was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service. The room that the chemical was sprayed into was THE ROOM WHERE BABIES AND CHILDREN were being kept while their mothers were engaged in prayers. This, apparently, is what the scare tactic political campaigning of John McCain's supporters has led to -- Americans perpetrating a terrorist attack against innocent children on American soil.

Chris Rodda's diary :: ::
I read the story as reported by the Dayton Daily News, but this was after I had received an email written by a friend of some of the victims of these American terrorists. The matter of fact news report in the Dayton paper didn't come close to conveying the horrific impact of this unthinkable act like the email I had just read, so I asked the email's author for permission to share what they had written. The author was with one of the families from the mosque -- a mother and two of the small children who were in the room that was gassed -- the day after the attack occurred.

"She told me that the gas was sprayed into the room where the babies and children were being kept while their mothers prayed together their Ramadan prayers. Panicked mothers ran for their babies, crying for their children so they could flee from the gas that was burning their eyes and throats and lungs. She grabbed her youngest in her arms and grabbed the hand of her other daughter, moving with the others to exit the building and the irritating substance there.

"The paramedic said the young one was in shock, and gave her oxygen to help her breathe. The child couldn't stop sobbing.

"This didn't happen in some far away place -- but right here in Dayton, and to my friends. Many of the Iraqi refugees were praying together at the Mosque Friday evening. People that I know and love.

"I am hurt and angry. I tell her this is NOT America. She tells me this is not Heaven or Hell -- there are good and bad people everywhere.

"She tells me that her daughters slept with her last night, the little one in her arms and sobbing throughout the night. She tells me she is afraid, and will never return to the mosque, and I wonder what kind of country is this where people have to fear attending their place of worship?

"The children come into the room, and tell me they want to leave America and return to Syria, where they had fled to from Iraq. They say they like me, ... , and other American friends -- but they are too afraid and want to leave. Should a 6 and 7 year old even have to contemplate the safety of their living situation?

"Did the anti-Muslim video circulating in the area have something to do with this incident, or is that just a bizarre coincidence? Who attacks women and children?

"What am I supposed to say to them? My words can't keep them safe from what is nothing less than terrorism, American style. Isn't losing loved ones, their homes, jobs, possessions and homeland enough? Is there no place where they can be safe?

"She didn't want me to leave her tonight, but it was after midnight, and I needed to get home and write this to my friends. Tell me -- tell me -- what am I supposed to say to them?"

Eboo,

Now you are fulminating on the film Obsession because it portrays, rightfully, on the Muslim radicals.

This is funny. You live in USA and yet all your posts ultimately lend implicit support for the violation of the 1st Amendment (Free Speech). Unless someone is "respectfully" critical of Islam and Muslims you express impatience because that someone has not shown "enough respect" or "enough remorse" in criticizing Islam.

This shows lack of objectivity in your posts, and quite frankly most of the bloggers would view your posts as pan-Islamic, and not take you seriously.

Given the fact that Islamic laws (Shariah) has mostly created a "failed state", one would argue why would any sensible person (like you) have angst against those who are critical of Islam and the collective Muslim mindset ?
