There's a graph in a well-known personal finance book showing how happy people were as compared to their income. Extrapolating those results to current America, $50-75k is about the level where money does "buy happiness" (depends on local cost-of-living) and everything above that does very little.

Seeing as the top 20% of earners have gotten essentially all of the income gains of the last 25 years, they could probably forgo a lot of expenses without missing them, while those below are experiencing real lifestyle losses.

While I would hope everyone gets to work on something that makes them proud to do a good job everyday; I suspect most of today's graduates will experience significant economic losses for doing so. The wealthier and politically powerful older generations will make sure the losses aren't concentrated among themselves, although they can most afford it.
