Mr. Eboo Patel, do you really think that there is more anti-muslim prejudice in the US or is there greater prejudice against the non-muslims in the muslim countries? By any objective standard prevailing prejudices in the US against muslims is a several orders of magnitude less than that we find in muslim countries against non-muslims. There is substantial evidence for that starting with the state and federal laws. Ease with which entrepreneurship opportunities that are available and credit facilities. General air of freedom, etc, etc. compared to anti-blasphemy laws, open discriminataion in the government employment. Requirement of native participation in enterprise, asymmetrical marriage laws, asymmetrical weight to testimony, lack of freedom to worship. The list goes on and on. Even among the general public there is much, much greater tolerance as evidenced by the difference in reaction to the Danish Cartoons in the muslim world compared to the reaction limited to expression of opinion and complete absence of any rioting or arson against muslim businesses or the diplomatic missions.

Given all this it puzzles me that while I see muslim vociferous voices raised in defense of the project by the muslims and deadening silence from the muslims regarding the danish cartoon riots. Whenever someone raises this the genral answer given by muslims is "am I my brother's keeper". The asymmetry is quite astonishing, we are not expecting you o condemn every bigoted action anywhere in teh world, but only the ones that happe in your native lands against the non-muslims.

In light of the disparity of bigotry, I think moving the Cardoba house project to muslim majority counties will be far more effective, in reducing the bigotry in teh muslim countries.

America has a First Amendment guaranteeing the right to build mosques or Muslim Community Centers. New York City also has architectural codes to guarantee that buildings fit the city's skyline.

So, they can build their center -- but it can't have a direct line of sight to the Ground Zero destruction zone. That way visitors to the WTC site don't have to look up and see a mosque. And any radical Islamists who visit Cordoba House can't look down with satisfaction on the destruction their brethren wrought.
