Tipping the scale in DC
Today's guest blogger is Jennifer Bailey, a Campus Engagement Associate at the Interfaith Youth Core where she works to transform college campuses into models of interfaith cooperation. A member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Jennifer has been actively engaged in the interfaith youth movement since 2005.
300 strong, they came. Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, and non-believers, marked by their differences but united in their commitment to work with one another towards building a world where interfaith cooperation is a social norm.
Last week, 200 undergraduate students and 100 staff allies gathered in Washington, D.C. for Interfaith Youth Core's inaugural Interfaith Leadership Institute. These student leaders are part of a growing network of young people around the world changing the conversation on faith and social action through the Better Together campaign. From the mountains of Young Harris, GA to the sandy beaches of Los Angeles, CA, they came ready to learn, share stories, and take action.
Over the course of the Institute I had the opportunity to hear poignant accounts from students about what brought them to the interfaith movement. For example, Hiba Ansari, a Muslim student at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, spoke eloquently in front of her peers about her decision to attend the small Lutheran school. She encountered difficulty when choosing between Augustana and more diverse institutions where she may have felt more comfortable, but in the face of potential isolation, Hiba chose to be a trailblazer with the hopes that other students would do the same.
For some, the Interfaith Leadership Institute serves as one of the few safe spaces where they were free to express their full religious and non-religious identities. An atheist student from Harvard University noted that at the convening she finally felt welcomed to the interfaith table. A Falun Gong practitioner from Michigan, motivated by the tenets of compassion taught by her spiritual belief, spoke passionately about the willingness of her peers to dismiss stereotypes and accept her as she was when her family could not.
There were other stories. Personal narratives told by students who been the victims of hate crimes because of their identities. Stories of families forced to hide for weeks on end because of rampant anti-Muslim bigotry and anti-Semitism in their communities. Yet despite the pain of those experiences, when many others would have turned to violence, these students stood committed to the values of religious pluralism.
Those values were translated into concrete action, when over 130 colleges and universities pledged commitments to promoting interfaith cooperation and understanding on their campuses this year as part of the Better Together campaign. Better Together is an international campaign that is empowering students to Speak Out about the power of interfaith social action, mobilize their peers for interfaith social action and reflection, and sustain an interfaith movement on campuses around the world.
The Interfaith Student Initiative at Temple University will mobilize Temple students from various faith and philosophical traditions to work with local residents to clean up some of the blighted areas and vacant lots surrounding the university and commission a mural on the wall of a building adjacent to one of the new community gardens/parks.
The Interfaith Action group at the University of Michigan is committing to raising awareness and starting an open and honest discussion about sexual assault and prevention on campus by building coalitions with faith communities in the Greater Ann Arbor area.

It is a rare gift to be able to say that you were present at the tipping point of a social movement--that special moment when the aspirations of a few become the collective vision for many. Last week's Interfaith Leadership Institute was that moment for the interfaith youth movement.
In the words of Cesar Chavez, "Once social change begins it cannot be reversed...We have seen the future, and the future is ours."
