Christian and Muslim brotherhood is real
Today's guest blogger is Hesham A. Hassaballa, a Chicago doctor and writer. He is co-author of the Beliefnet Guide to Islam, and his newest book is Noble Brother, the story of the Prophet Muhammad told entirely in poetry.
Barely half a week into his new term as Governor of Alabama, Robert Bentley immersed himself in controversy by uttering these words at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church:
"There may be some people here today who do not have living within them the Holy Spirit. But if you have been adopted in God's family like I have, and like you have if you're a Christian and if you're saved, and the Holy Spirit lives within you just like the Holy Spirit lives within me, then you know what that makes? It makes you and me brothers. And it makes you and me brother and sister. Now I will have to say that, if we don't have the same daddy, we're not brothers and sisters. So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother."
Naturally, these comments upset his non-Christian constituents, as the words intimate that he has no relationship with those who do not have Jesus Christ in their lives. And he later "apologized" by saying:
"If anyone from other religions felt disenfranchised by the language, I want to say I am sorry. I am sorry if I offended anyone in any way."
Yet, it seems that he is not really sorry for feeling that way, but just sorry if his beliefs offended anyone, which is why I put the word "apologized' in quotes. But to be fair to the Governor, he also said in his remarks:
"I was elected as a Republican candidate. But once I became governor ... I became the governor of all the people. I intend to live up to that."
Now, I understand that, on one level, I am not his brother because, as a Muslim, I neither believe Jesus Christ is God nor do I accept him as my personal savior.
Yet, there are many other levels on which Gov. Bentley and I share a common brotherhood. Although I do not worship Christ, that does not mean I do not love and believe in him. In fact, love for and belief in Christ is a central tenet of Islamic belief. Thus, on the level of common love for Jesus, Gov. Bentley and I are brothers.
As a Muslim, I worship the very same God as the One to which Christ himself called during his ministry on earth. In fact, I call Him by the very same name by which Christ called him as well.
Thus, on the level of our common belief in the God of Christ, Gov. Bentley and I are brothers. We are both sons of this great nation, and thus, on the level of our common nationality, Gov. Bentley and I are brothers. Moreover, we are both the sons of Prophet Adam, upon whom be peace, and thus, on the level of our common humanity, Gov. Bentley and I are brothers.
I take him at his word that Gov. Robert Bentley will be the governor of every citizen of Alabama, regardless of their faith or lack thereof. Yet, there are many ways that Gov. Bentley and his non-Christian constituents can be brothers and sisters, and I urge the governor to focus on these during his term.
Yes, I am a brother to my fellow American Muslims, but I am also a brother to the rest of my American compatriots of other faiths and traditions as well as to the rest of humanity all across the globe. There was a time in my life when I did not have this inclusive worldview, and I am so very grateful to the Lord that my views have changed. It has made me a better American and a better Muslim as well.
The sooner we see each other as brothers and sisters, members of one human family, the easier it will be to work together as a family and make our world a much better place for all. It is easy to separate and divide. Let us work hard to unite and come together.

What Jesus said was, "I have not come to bring unity but division, I have come to bring FIRE to the earth and I wish it were already burning".
This FIRE is God, this FIRE is the CONSUMING FIRE OF PURE LOVE.
This FIRE will burn away all of the crud, so to speak, it is not to destroy man but to burn up evil.
This FIRE is God's Judgement against evil, there is no reason to be afraid of this FIRE.
There has been good and bad done in the name of "Christianity", there has been good and bad done in pretty much any name whether it is associated with "religion" or anything else.
Contrary to what many have appeared to have tried thru the age, Christianity is not about setting up a theocracy on earth.
Christianity is about God becoming One of us and being part of God's overall Plan which God has had since before creation.
Judaism is about God choosing a People, the Chosen People, and thru the Chosen People, God becoming One of us and this Person is Jesus, also part of God's overall Plan.
God's Plan, which will come to Fruition, is, ultimately, for ALL to be with God in God's Kingdom.
The True, Living, Triune, Triumphant God is a searcher of hearts and minds, not of religious affiliations or lack thereof.
In other words, God looks at the person, not the "label".
See you and the rest of humanity in the Kingdom.
Take care, be ready.

About the Koran, it is not gibberish, learn Arabic, read it, and then talk about it. Arabic is one of the most difficult languages to translate especially when it comes to classical Arabic, so the translation does it no justice. When it comes to the excerpts from the Koran, these are texts that respond to specific events at that time. The Koran talked about, reacted out, and spoke about specific historic or even life events at that time. EaThe text should not be read in isolation of its historical and social context.
People's ignorance is astounding. Is there an end for this hate mongering and demonization of all Muslims. Is there hope for you to end your hatred of people you have colonized, oppressed, pillaged, and now enslaved with the pupper regimes that repress their people and steal their freedoms, human rights, and lives? Shame on Jesus followers for not learning what love or justice means and for preaching hatred of the oppressed and the dispossessed.
I am a Muslim woman. I have a Ph.D. like others Muslims who are educated and professionals. My religion encourages me to be educated and to be empowered and to empower my daughter. There is nothing in my religion that encourages a man to beat his wife or children. If there is any abuse of women, look not far from the US with the millions of cases of battered women by their Christian husbands. Again, stop the lies and the hypocrisy. Stop the hate.

Neither the Jesus nor God of the New Testament is the same as the Issa or Allah of the Quran. Allah of the Quran has all the attributes of an out of control desert warlord. Issa of the Quran is a mosaic of different
Characters cut and pasted from the different accounts of early heretical Christian groups. These varied from denying Jesus’ divinity and asserting that he was no more than a mere prophet not unlike Lot or Jonah to claiming that he created a living organism from clay as well as raised the dead.

It will be nice to go to the next step and say that all of humanity is one big family irrespective of faith, nationality, gender, economic and social status. This is what the ancient Sanskrit phrase enshrined in Vedic literature "Vasudhaiv kutumbkam" means.
---kst2
And does this big family also include the untouchables who are not even allowed to walk the same path that upper class hindus have put their feet on?

And this is in the very moderate Islam of Malaysia and Indonesia. Is there an example of Muslims integrating into any Kafir Society and accepting the Kafir constitution?

More evidence of Muslim Christian Brotherhood:
http://www.persecution.org/2011/01/25/ethiopian-muslims-warn-christians-to-convert-leave-city-or-face-death/
"Ethiopian Muslims Warn Christians to Convert, Leave City or Face Death
Washington, D.C. (January 25, 2011)–International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Christians in the Ethiopian city of Besheno are being harassed and physically abused after Muslims posted notices on the doors of Christian homes warning them to convert, leave the city or face death.
Three Christian leaders were forced to flee the city and two Christians have been forced to convert to Islam. In the Muslim majority city, the entire evangelical Christian community consists of about 30 believers.
Evangelist Kassa Awano remains in critical condition after Muslims attacked him on November 29, 2010. A few days after the attack, nearly 100 Muslims surrounded a vehicle carrying Christian leaders on their way to negotiate for peace with Muslim leaders. Two men, Tesema Hirego and Niggusie Denano, were seriously wounded, and the other leaders suffered minor injuries. On January 2, Muslims assaulted Temesgen Peteros with a knife after he testified about the attacks on these Christians in court.
Christians in Besheno have been targeted by Muslims for many years. On May 21, 2004, Muslims murdered the 7 year-old daughter of Evangelist Tesfaye Hobe. Muslims continuously attack Christians for listening to Christian songs and watching Christian videos.
.... "
Words of Muslims in the safety of the Kafir West are nice and soothing. The actions of the Muslims in the Islamic Countries are far more reliable. The laws of the Muslim Countries for the non-Muslims are the leading indicator of how much the Muslims are really listening. Has a single discriminatory law against the non-Muslim in any Muslim country been changed lately?

You wrote, "because, as a Muslim, I neither believe Jesus Christ is God nor do I accept him as my personal savior."
You then wrote, "As a Muslim, I worship the very same God as the One to which Christ himself called during his ministry on earth. In fact, I call Him by the very same name by which Christ called him as well."
These are two totally contradictory statements, how can they both be true?
If you could answer, I would like to know how one can say: Jesus is God-Incarnate and Jesus is not God-Incarnate and that both are true?
Isn't this what your two above statements amount too?
Not only is Jesus, God-Incarnate, but God is a Trinity, isn't this something else that the god of islam vehemently denies?
By the way, isn't "Allah" merely an Arabic equivalent of God in English?
Jesus called out to Yahweh, do you?
Jesus said when you pray, pray, "Our Father...", do you address God as your Dad?
Jesus did say Abba which is the equivalent of Dad or Daddy, do you refer to God as such?
You know or you should know that the Jesus depicted in the bible and the Jesus depicted in the koran bear very little resemblance to each other, any comments why this is the case?
You also wrote, " Although I do not worship Christ, that does not mean I do not love and believe in him. In fact, love for and belief in Christ is a central tenet of Islamic belief."
You do not believe in the Jesus of the bible, you believe in the Jesus of the koran and except for Jesus's Name and Mary being Jesus's mom, is anything else about Jesus even similiar in these two books?
The god of islam calls the bible, Old and New Testament, a pack of lies but shouldn't that be expected from the father of lies and then goes on to say the koran is the "completion" of the bible.
By the way as I have stated previously: The True, Living, Triune, Triumphant God is a searcher of hearts and minds, not of religious affiliations or lack thereof and It is important what one does and why one does it and what one knows.
God's Plan is for ALL, unltimately, to be with God in God's Kingdom.
See you and the rest of humanity in the Kingdom.
Take care, be ready.

"Islam calls for the dominance of Christians"
Islam as usual changes the definition of words which causes confusion and allows them (the religious Muslims) to lie without ever acknowledging that they are lying.
Who is a Christian? In Islam a Christian is a believer in the "uncorrupted" Injeel (which they translate to the Bible). Those are the Christians to whom Allah tells Muhammad to say:
*********
42:13 PICKTHAL: He hath ordained for you that religion which He commended unto Noah, and that which We inspire in thee (Muhammad), and that which We commended unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying: Establish the religion, and be not divided therein. Dreadful for the idolaters is that unto which thou callest them. Allah chooseth for Himself whom He will, and guideth unto Himself him who turneth (toward Him).
and before the break
003.064
YUSUFALI: Say: "O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say ye: "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah's Will).
and then at the next step
005.017
YUSUFALI: In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say: "Who then hath the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all every - one that is on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He createth what He pleaseth. For Allah hath power over all things."
or
005.073
YUSUFALI: They do blaspheme who say: Allah is one of three in a Trinity: for there is no god except One Allah. If they desist not from their word (of blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among them.
Since Allah also said
004.136
YUSUFALI: O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the scripture which He hath sent to His Messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray.
The "real" Christians believe in the "real" Bible. Since the living Christians do not, it must be that the Bible has been corrupted, and hence the living Christians are not really Christians.
So Eboo can say with a straight face that Muslims and Christians are Brothers because he is talking about the "real" Christians, who would have accepted Muhammad and would have become Muslims. The living ones are not Christians.
The Proof that the living Christians are not brothers is that they are not allowed in Mecca and Medina. Allah forbade the filthy unclean "Mushrikun" from entering his house, and the living Christians are not allowed there. Living Christians are filthy and unclean in Islam.

I see Eboo is spouting lies and deception again. Of course he does not mention that Islam calls for the dominance of Christians. Or that the Islamic scriptures state that Jesus will come back as a Muslim and destroy Christianity.
Eboo.....why don't you show up on my site and debate me on this issue? Or do you not have the guts to?

Al Shabaab militants carry out ritual slaying of Christian found to be ‘apostate.’
NAIROBI, Kenya, January 17 (CDN) — A mother of four was killed for her Christian faith on Jan. 7 on the outskirts of Mogadishu, Somalia by Islamic extremists from al Shabaab militia, a relative said.
The relative, who requested anonymity, said Asha Mberwa, 36, was killed at 5:15 p.m. in Warbhigly village; the Islamic extremists from the insurgent group had arrested her outside her house the previous day at 8:30 a.m. She died when the militants cut her throat in front of villagers who came out of their homes as witnesses.
She is survived by her children – ages 12, 8, 6 and 4 – and her husband, who was not home at the time she was apprehended. They had married in 1993.
Her relative, whose location is also withheld for security reasons, said he had phoned her on Jan. 5 to try to make arrangements for moving her family out of the area. Al Shabaab extremists, who control large parts of Mogadishu, were able to monitor the conversation and confirm that she had become a Christian, he said.

Police, Islamists Put Up Obstacles to Worship in Indonesia
Police try to restrain protestors at a GKI Yamin Christmas night worship service in Bogor, West Java.
Church services over Christmas season blocked; property seized.
JAKARTA, Indonesia, January 10 (CDN) — Government officials in West Java Province blocked one church from worshipping, and Islamic groups pressured authorities to seize the property of another during the Christmas season.
The Bogor Regency Administrative Leadership Council tried unsuccessfully to forbid the Gereja Kristen Indonesia (Indonesian Christian Church, or GKI) in Bogor’s Taman Yasmin area from holding a Dec. 25 Christmas service, but authorities did block it from its regular Sunday service on De.26. In Rancaekek, Bandung, Islamic demonstrators on Dec. 19 got police to remove items from a Huria Kristan Batak Protestan (HKBP) church building that had already been sealed.
In Bogor, GKI Yasmin spokesperson Bona Sigalingging said police telephoned church leaders to forbid Christmas services that were to begin at 7 p.m. on Dec. 25.

Words are nice but actions are a lot nicer and reliable. Instead of the lies that Eboo sells, it would be a lot more believable if actual events showing tolerance in the Muslim world was shown, and Eboo actually showing some real effort in creating tolerance in the Muslim world.

That is a lie. Islam's Allah is not the God of the Bible. The word may be the same but the character and the behavior of the two deities is very far apart. Islam's Allah hates the christians, the jews, and all other non-Muslims. He hates them with a passion. The Christian God is not even aware of the Muslims or Muhammad. Allah is a sock puppet for Muhammad and cannot be intelligibly understood without referring constantly to muhammad's history. Koran turns into gibberish on its own without constantly referring it to the history of hadith.
There could be peace between the Muslims and the Christians a lot faster if the Muslims would simply stop trying to ex-appropriate Christianity and Judaism. But they cannot do that since it is built into their Koran and Muhammad's history.
Allah allows fudging of little muslim girls by adult muslim men, beating of wives, hate and killing of non-muslims. This is for all time to come instructions to muslims. Try providing justice and peace under those commands!!

Oh by all the Gods at once...look, I am a fellow citizen of all citizens, but I am a brother (leaving aside my actual blood kin) to those with whom I have formally exchanged vows that form that relationship. As in any family, there will be brothers and sisters with whom one finds closer bonds than those of formal kinship, but that is by the way.
The message of universal brotherhood itself specifically emanates from Judaeo-Christian-Islamic theology, and is hardly universal even within that universe of discourse.
I do not expect my elected officials to remember my birthday, attend my child's graduation, etc. I expect the civic duty an official owes his constituents, and one citizen owes another, without fear of how are different or favor for how we are similar.
Was it was politically maladroit for Gov. Bentley to emphasize the formal brotherhood he accepts with other Christians (presumably a closer kinship with those in the same communion as himself)? Yep, pretty much. Especially on his inauguration day. But demands that he proclaim that he is everyone's brother are simply preposterous.
The bonds of brotherhood are not something that can be imposed on others from without. They are self-imposed, and often at great price ("We few. We happy few. We band of brothers. For he that sheds his blood with me this day is my brother," for example).

You are right. Wives are beaten all over the world, unfortunately. Some countries more and some less, but it's kind of universal. It's a cultural thing and probably a remnant from the origin of humanity. What is not universal is the beaten be approved or encouraged by a religion. Based on posts here in Wapo and what is said in some web sites, it appears that Islam in one that approves the beating. If a person is under a personal spiritual renovation and is considering Islam as his/her new religion, would like to dispel doubts about whether or not the beating is approved by this religion.
Here are some citations that with your knowledge of the language and the religion can help to clarify.
Qur'an (4:34)-"Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and **beat them**; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great."
Qur'an (38:44) - "And take in your hand a green branch and **beat** her with it, and do not break your oath..." Allah telling Job to beat his wife.
