Pope Thanks N.M. Governor

By Jacqueline L. Salmon

Catholic blog Whispers in the Loggia has an account of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson's visit this week with Pope Benedict, who thanked him for signing of a state ban on capital punishment.
Whispers blogger Rocco Palmo points out that Richardson, who supports abortion rights, didn't get the "Pelosi treatment" -- a reference to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, another supporter of abortion rights, who was treated to a lecture by His Holiness on the "sanctity of human life."

In a story in today's Washington Post about Richardson, the governor says he's content to leave Washington politics behind. And who wouldn't be in idyllic New Mexico?
