New Faith Council Expected to Meet Next Week

By Jacqueline L. Salmon

We're hearing that the president's faith advisory council will hold its first meeting, next Monday evening in Washington.

The council, which will advise the White House Office on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships on policy, so far has 15 members, and the president is expected to name 10 more shortly.
It's been almost six weeks since the first 15 were named. One possible hold-up for announcing the remaining members isTony Dungy, former NFL coach. Sources say he's been asked to join the council but hasn't decided yet.

Dungy could be a controversial member because of his remarks at a 2007 banquet at the Indiana Family Institute, which promoted an amendment to the state constitution banning same-sex marriage. Dungy endorsed the institute's position, saying, "I'm on God's side."
The Family Research Council came to Dungy's defense yesterday in a statement that said Dungy had used his celebrity "promote adoption, prison ministry, family values, outreach to the poor, and simple Christian decency."

Faith office director Joshua Dubois did not return phone calls or emails seeking comment.

UPDATE: Sources say further that the meeting will be broader than just the council and will include community leaders and members of the faith community not on the council. They'll talk about a range of faith and public policy issues. It's a sign that the administration is finally making its promised outreach to include faith leaders in public policy issues in a more substantive way than during the Bush years. The group next week is expected to mostly delve into the areas laid out by the White House as priorities for the faith council--fostering interfaith dialogue, reducing poverty, dealing with teen fathers and reducing the need for abortions.

Dundy endorsed the institute's position, saying, "I'm on God's side."

1 These writings that I do write in the name of Jesus christ our savior, forever. It is because of these scriptures, as they are found written, in revelation 11: 18-19. As they are found, written forever true, as now occurring, in our true generation, forever.

2 And all of these books, as they are found, being written by me, forever. They are all found forever, as being that true fulfillment, as it is found written by our true kind god, as to have occurred forever. As to occur forever, in and through the book of the revelation of Jesus Christ, the son-- chapter 11.

3 All of those books, that I do write, they are all and each forever, as hailing god’s true words, to the earth, through Jesus christ, his true son, as being forever seen, and heard forever true.

4 And it is found, through the temple of god in heaven, which is: “The temple of god“, that is called Jesus Christ, who is god’s own true son. Therefore, in the body of christ,

Athena4, I hear you on that one! There's Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Native Americans, Jains, Bahais, Shintos, Native Americans, agnostics, atheists, Pagans, and Wiccans in this country, to name a few beliefs. However, whenever the subject of religion crops up, the Big Three (Jews, Christians, Muslims) are the only faiths that get mentioned! Either make room for the rest of us, or keep religion out of government altogether!

It is difficult for me to reconcile the notion that conservatives believe Barack Obama to be a socialist while at the same time approving of a government program that shovels taxpayer money to Christian orgainzations for the express purpose of dispensing social welfare.

It places conservatives in the awkward position of condemning welfare programs on the one hand while accepting such programs when there is a potential for proselytizing those who accept such assistance, on the other.

Just as I suspected, conservatives are posturing when they piously defy Obama on the principle of "no socialism in America."

God in Gov't is great as long as its your god. I'd rather see non-seculiar moral values, decency and common good in gov't.

While the Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships address the intersection of faith organizations and government on a range of domestic agenda items, it should be noted that faith communities have much to say on the foreign and military/security front as well.

Yesterday President Obama met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to discuss most significantly the need for a new nuclear arms reduction agreement between the two countries. Given that the START agreement is set to expire in December, President Obama and President Medvedev hope to have a new treaty by the end of the year.

In the early 1980s the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops published their pastoral letter "The Challenge of Peace: God's Promise and Our Response". Not only did the Catholic Bishops' letter make the front page of "The New York Times" but it generated similar studies and pronouncements by other faith groups as well. Yet with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war, concern over nuclear weapons both inside religious organizations and outside seemed to wane. More recently, particularly after 9/11, there is a renewed interest in controlling nuclear weapons and fissile material. The "Wall Street Journal" essays in which former secretaries Perry, Shultz, and Kissinger and former Sen. Sam Nunn call for the abolition of nuclear weapons have also stimulated discussion across the political spectrum about "getting to zero."

A wide variety of religious communities as President Obama will learn, if he is not already aware, is eager to encourage and support him in his efforts to abolish nuclear weapons. As advocacy director of a multifaith organization of national religious groups, I hear daily from people who, because of their faith, support reductions in nuclear arsenals, call for the U.S. to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and ultimately seek a the abolition of all nuclear weapons.

"The Challenge of Peace" through a rigorous application of just war theory concluded that a nuclear war must never be fought. Today's interest in nuclear weapons stems from the likely proliferation of these weapons and the fear that a terrorist organization might be able to explode even a single nuclear device. Whether held by states or by terrorists nuclear weapons presents us with the most dire moral challenge.

God in gov? You mean the god that pushed for the war in Iraq and where countless thousands were ripped apart? You mean the gods in the Middle East that tell people to kill as many of the infidel as possible? How about the gods in our nation that say it is okay to torture and maim in his name and even rape and kill? Oh, you mean that god!
