Supreme Court: Catholic Abuse Records Must Be Unsealed

By William Wan

The U.S. Supreme Court said yesterday that thousands of documents from lawsuits against Roman Catholic priests for alleged sexual abuse must be unsealed.

The diocese of Bridgeport in Connecticut is trying to keep more than 12,600 pages of depositions, exhibits and legal arguments involving 23 lawsuits under wraps until the high court decides whether to take up the cases in the fall. But Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg told the diocese late Tuesday.

Diocese officials have already issued a statement on its Web site saying they plan to appeal to the full U.S. Supreme Court -- all nine justices -- to review and rule on the request.

Some interesting background from Hartford Courant story: "Most of the lawsuits were filed in the mid-1990s. The lawsuits were settled in 2001 by the church for undisclosed amounts with the agreement that the settlements and the documents would remain sealed forever."

The Courant, as well as The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe, have asked to see the documents. More details in the AP story here.

Apparently the Pope's lawyers don't feel the same "personal anguish" he pretends to feel over this issue.

Catholics who deny, hide, aid, abet and otherwise try to snivel out of their responsibility over this (usually by saying, in a shrill adolescent voice, "Other people do it, too") are no more "the Brothers of Christ" than Jeffery Dahmer or John Wayne Gacy.
May the karma of those who protect pedophile priests be that they are brutally raped by their clergy in their next life. 14 would be a good age - it was young enough to terrorize me pretty well. The only difference for me was the priest was not part of my clergy - I was visiting CYA with my Catholic friend because young Catholics and Protestants had to stick together in oppressive, intolerant Mormon Utah.
