Poll Finds More Americans Now ID as Pro-Life

By Catherine Cheney

A new Gallup poll found, for the first time, that a majority of Americans identify themselves as pro-life.

A May survey, just released, asked this question: With respect to the abortion issue, would you consider yourself to be pro-choice or pro-life?

In 1995, 33 percent of respondents identified themselves as pro-life and 56 percent as pro-choice. But in May, 51 percent said they were pro-life figure and only 42 percent pro-choice.

The results of the May 2009 study are below:

Notice the difference between 2008 and 2009. Just a year ago, 50 percent of Americans surveyed identified as pro-choice whereas 44 percent identified as pro-life.

On a separate question regarding the legality of abortion, Gallup also found that fewer Americans said they are in favor of unrestricted abortion than in previous years.

Where does the shift toward pro-choice support come from?

1. Political Origins: While Gallup noted essentially no difference in the views of Democrats toward abortion, there was a 10 percent increase in pro-life identification among Republicans, including independents who lean Republican, in the past year.

2. Religious Origins: In the past year, Gallup noted a seven-point increase in pro-life support among Catholics and an eight-point increase in pro-life support among Protestants.

Also worth noting, since May there has been a slight dip in the percentage of Americans who identify as pro-life, according to a mid-July Gallup poll that found 47 percent of Americans identify as pro-life and 46 percent of Americans identify as pro-choice. The change may be due to the May 31 murder of late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller.

It is possible to be both pro-life and pro-choice if you consider the pregnant woman's life and her quality of life as important to that of the fetus she carries.
I happen to be the proud pro-choice parent of a lovely young pro-choice woman.

The society currently equates pro-life/choice as political issue and religious/non-religious issue. This is wrong. Actually, this is a conscientious dilemma within every human heart, regardless of political view or religious view.

As more and more people learn about this dilemma of humanity, spend the time to think about it, with empathy, they would start to sympathize for both the unborn baby and mom. They would start to look for solution. The only doable and most optimal solution to remove this dilemma is to educate the society so every person consciously not become victim of this dilemma and abortion becomes unnecessary.

As we all spend time to understand this dilemma, use their empathy, realize that abortion is preventable, we will turn into pro-life automatically. My observation is that this change of heart is happening in more and more people’s heart. Let’s not stop educating people about this issue.
