Muslim-bashing the GOP's sell?
Former Arkansas governor and 2012 presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee found himself in hot water this week after he called Islam the "antithesis of the gospel of Christ" and said that churches that share worship space with Muslims are caving to a religion "that says that Jesus Christ and all the people that follow him are a bunch of infidels who should be essentially obliterated."
In an analysis of how Islam may shape campaign politics, Politico's Bryon Tau wrote: "As Republican candidates define their national security stands in the 2012 elections, conservative discomfort with Islam in America will be a feature of the debate."
Should Islam be debated on the campaign trail? Are religious issues in danger of being exploited?
What we surely don't need on any campaign trail is a discussion of whether Islam is, as former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee claims, "the antithesis of the gospel of Christ."
If we did, we would continue a centuries- long discourse on what is good, bad or ugly about both Islam and Christianity. This may be an engaging debate in a theological school, but it is a dangerous question to politicize.
Sadly, I am confident we will see this argument raised during the next presidential election cycle. Nearly 20 percent of voters think President Obama is a Muslim even though he was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ. (Come to think of it, although I am a minister in that same denomination, Ann Coulter once wrote a column called "Kathleen Parker: The Barry Lynn of the South," in which she said I was Jewish.)
We will also soon see the spectacle of U.S. Rep. Peter King (R- N.Y.) holding a hearing on "Muslim radicalization" in America. There has been little outcry over this, but could you imagine if the last Congress had chosen to have a hearing about "fundamentalist Christian" influence on political parties? The roof would have been blown right off the Capitol!
Finally, the voters of Oklahoma have already passed a measure prohibiting the use of Shariah law in state courts. Not too surprisingly, there is no court in that state or elsewhere - outside of places like Saudi Arabia - that does so.
With all this evidence that Muslim-bashing is a solid right-wing political sell, it is hard to imagine a campaign where politicians will not pull out the worst passages of Koranic text, while ignoring any "difficult" Biblical text. It is my fear that among the largely religious illiterate American populace, if Jay Leno polled New Yorkers on who said, "I have come not to bring peace but the sword," more people would answer "that fellow Muhammad" rather than correctly attributing Jesus in Matthew, 10:34.

It is the standard Republican line to encourage and exploit haters, whether the target of their hatred is Muslims, Mexicans, unionized government employees, or Democrats. Fear and hate is their currency, and the degenerate, ignorant American electorate their fertile field. Anyone who hates is a potential Republican voter.

In the 2012 race to be a Pharisee, Mike Huckabee recently moved to the head of the pack and as we get closer to the Republican primary for President we can expect more hilarity to ensue.
It really is funny to me when the Christian Right gets all bent out of shape about Islam in America. For starters, it illustrates one of the real problems with religion. Since religion is based on faith alone, there is no independent way to verify which religion (if any) is the correct one. With science, we have an independent method of verification called the scientific method. So if we have two competing scientific theories, we just look to see which has the most evidence supporting it. When a theory has strong evidence, most scientists (Creationist hacks excluded) have no problem admitting it even if they supported a theory with less evidence.
