Imagine more religion

This weekend, Jon Stewart is holding "a rally to restore sanity" on the mall, two months after Glenn Beck's religion-infused "Restoring Honor" rally. Beck said he was called by God to hold the rally. Now atheist groups are planning to use Stewart's event to promote "reason."  Are "reason" and "sanity" the opposite of religious belief? Is taking religion out of the political debate the answer for restoring reason? Or do we need more faith?

Religion is the "reason" our country is sane. The atheists using the "Rally to Restore Sanity" are providing mainstream Americans another opportunity to laugh at them. They will be an insignificant part of one big joke.

Spend some time on Freedom From Religion Foundation's website (Richard Dawkins and Susan Jacoby - an "On Faith" blogger - were appointed to its honorary board) and you'll find that their hatred of religion, specifically the Christian faith, is far from "sane." FFRF sells a "Bible Warning Label" and a bumper sticker that says "The Bible: A Grim Fairy Tale." The Foundation must not have the guts to attack the Qur'an or Muslims.

If you look at atheists commenting here, you'll see that they have a much greater obsession with religion than evangelicals. Atheists know religion academically, but they just can't wrap their heads around faith. It is all too clear that their mental tussle over whether to believe weighs on their mind. It was no surprise that the first comment on this week's topic included these two sentences: "I'm not a fan of religion. I think it does more harm than good."

In the United States, we have a government elected by the people, the freedom to criticize and question that government, a multi-tiered, functioning judicial system, and the freedom to choose our religious faith. Here, we decide whether to be guided by faith when making decisions. We enjoy this tremendous liberty and freedom because our Founding Fathers trusted their fellow Americans. Those of us on the right continue to trust the American people. The American left is scared of ordinary Americans, those of us who "cling" to guns and religion.

A progressive is president. Democrats have mega-majorities in the House and the Senate. Why is the left so outraged? It seems bizarre that this is the time to restore "sanity" in America. If the left did a good job at governing, we would not be on the verge of major change in Washington, DC. The progressives had two years of total control and they've literally outraged middle America. Yet, if the pundits are accurate, the progressives will maintain control of the Senate and, of course, Obama will be President for at least two more years.

Why are liberals scared of religion's influence in politics? It has nothing to do with faith and everything to do with power. When religious people vote, progressives lose.

I'm thankful that I live in a country where my leaders, Republican and Democrat, are guided by faith. Frankly, it would be scary to live in a nation without religion. Religious faith has been an inspiration for the arts, sciences, humanitarian work, and fundamental rights. When I imagine no religion, I envision the dullness and oppression of the Soviet Union. God help us if any of these "Freedom From Religion Foundation" types ever outnumber the faithful.

Definitely a good article Sekelow. We need to begin with those good ole stories of the pilgrims, the REAL stories, beginning with the pilgrims coming here to spread the gospel with the establishment of a new life, and telling LIES to the natives about they were in sin for wearing long hair, and just bullyies the people. The same thing going on today....STOP THIS MADNESS. GET REAL that is the only religion

no1steeler1,

"The hatred towards Christianity by the far left has never been more obvious then in this election year."

Really; I thought it was the 2008 election year.

"Yes, their hatred raised it's ugly head in the last Presiential election, but not to the extremes we have this year."

Oh, I see; what do you think about the 2012 election year?

Do you think that the hate will be worse?

What about the evil; will that be worse also?

"As a Christian, it is very saddening, but understoood since Jesus said we will be hater for his namesake."

Then, what are you complaining about?

It appears that your jebus stacked the deck against you, and that you are stupid enough the play the hand that he dealt you.

It appears to me that it's your jebus's will that everyone hates you.

"If Obama wins a second term, I just wonder how long before believers will be loaded up and carted off to concentration camps."

Two, three months at most.

"I see a second holocaust on the horizon, with Christians as the target this time."

Did your jebus tell you this?

For most of the time our Constitutional Republic has existed, government did not intrude into religion, as required by the First Amendment. Then a number of decades ago this interpretation was expanded to include keeping religion out of government. Despite the fact that for most of our history religion has played a great part in our government, public education, and other secular institutions. And despite the fact that the plain language of the First Amendment clearly addresses only keeping government out of religion. This conclusion is supported by the semantics of the langauge of the amendment. If the founders had wanted to keep religion out of government they would have said so in the amendment. As it is written, you cannot even say it implies keeping religion out of government. By what legal theory can the meaning of such plain and clear language be altered and expanded? So the courts now not only make law from the bench but amend the Constitution from the bench. Both actions look to be illegal to me. Are not both actions the Constitutional duty of the Legislative Branch? Now the left is spoofing religion, specifically Christianity, with the notion that religion now has no place in politics. I suppose that next they will say that religion has no place in churches. What is happening to our country? Are we no longer concerned with things that have made our country great? We are the real deal here and we need to start acting like it again. I want America back.

“Imagine more religion” I would like to have back half of what has been ripped away over the last century, our country has been lead far from the ideals of the founding fathers. If we could simply regain what has been lost since nineteen hundred or even since World War 2 this country and the world would be a better place. To remove the one thing, religion, which brought us to where we are, is truly insane, the “Ten Commandments” in our courts, prayer in our schools, and morals on our streets, that is what is missing. I hear the clammier of voices who demand that religious speech be relegated to the Churches and not be heard in the white house, senate, house, courts or in public at all. This flies in the face of our first amendment right of freedom of religion and free speech. The idea of taking away the choice of Christians to follow or not is contrary to the edict of the living GOD, nature of man and the concepts upon which this country is based. There are people who truly do not understand the nature of the three-in-one, in the Bible it is written "you may" that means you have the choice. Why shouldn’t everyone hear the whole story and choose for themselves what they will or won’t believe. I have faith that the people of The United States of America have the “reason” to choose the “sanity” of freedom and capitalism over the failed socieoliberal agenda.

Good article Jordan.

And as you already stated, in other words, the freedom-for-sanity-reason etc group appear not to appreciate the freedoms they have are derived, in fact, from God fearing forefathers and founders of our nation, who promoted the freedoms that they NOW enjoy. Some were in fact even ordained ministers.

On another level, I suspect that these anti-religious individual have difficulty with a PERSONAL relation with God. It sounds like there may be hurt, turned into hatred, or maybe dismay with disappointments that they've not been able to overcome. Too bad for them. There is so much love to be had and to give, because God is love.

It will be interesting to see if they aim that same anti-religion fervor to islam. We'll be watching, maybe they too have sold out to the ever-paying Saudis, or just plain scared.

As DCTalk said....The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable...... I think we are in the place we are in, because a long time ago, the church pulled out of the market place and receded into the walls of the church. Schools are like they are because the church bought into the lie of separation of church and state. Our government is the way it is because Godly people pulled out of the political arena. Now we see what happens when Christians are not salt and light to our world. May God have mercy on us!

Perhaps liberals/atheists/agnostics are concerned with Christians who espouse Dominionism/Theonomy/Reconstructionism Theologies. If these folks had their way, all of the above 'infidels' would be either forced to confess faith in God or eliminated. The upshot of it all is to present Christ with a perfect world order so He can return to catch up His bride the Church. This heresy appears to be gaining momentum in some quarters. Very sad indeed!

I followed your suggestion of reading some of the statements of the Big Shots in the Freedom From Religion Foundation. I agree that these people are OBSESSED WITH GOD -- desperately attempting to get Him out of their face by uttering adolescently petulant, defiant quips. Here's a sample:

Jennifer Michael Hecht: “If there is no god — and there isn't — then we [humans] made up morality. And I'm very impressed.”
Ron Reagan: “Unabashed atheist, not afraid of burning in hell.”
Robert Sapolsky (Stanford professor): “Welcome, hellbound atheists.”

GOD'S RESPONSE to their defiant nonsense,
From the Book of Isaiah Ch. 44:

24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer,
And He who formed you from the womb:

“ I am the LORD, who makes all things,
Who stretches out the heavens all alone,
Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself;
25 Who frustrates the signs of the babblers,
And drives diviners mad;
Who turns wise men backward,
And makes their knowledge foolishness;"

cara11,

"Just because someone says "There is no God" doesn't mean He doesn't exist."

Just because someone else says "There is a god" doesn't mean that he does exist.

"It is infinitely more plausible to believe that a loving Creator caused the world to come into being..."

That may be true for someone who believes, but not for someone who thinks.

"...than to believe that we somehow evolved from sludge."

It is actually more plausible to try to understand how we evolved, than to believe that we already know how we evolved, or to believe that we did not evolve.

"Both take faith, both take belief, but what I see in those without faith in God is a lack of joy, a lack of real hope, a lack of peace."

You most probably see exactly what you want to see, just as you believe exactly what you want to believe (or what you have been instructed to believe).

"The best thing that ever happened to me was when I believed in God and His son Jesus."

Really?

Athiest's forget: Athiesm and Socialism are both religions. A religion is simply a collection of beliefs. Why single out Christians, or Muslims? Why not instead single out Socialists and Athiests. If religion causes more harm than good, then Athiests and Socialists both cause more harm than good. Marx is a god (idol) of socialism, yet few would die for him. There are many idols of athiesm, few of which anyone would die for. All of which points to socialists and atheists as being pretty self-centered, and perhaps a bit narcistic--or should we just call them men of "reason" and "sanity."

I am glad to see very good rebuttals to the incorrect assumptions about atheists in the column. Religionists have to make up things because we atheists have truth on our side. (If there were a god, why would he tell so many people such conflicting ideas - just trying to stir up trouble?)

Religionists have the impression that our messages show up oftne when, in fact, they don't even see the Christian stuff everywhere because they are so used to it.

Atheists who have deconverted often feel a profound sense of relief when they finally let it all go. Read Dan Barker's books, "Losing Faith in Faith" and "Godless." There is no doubt that he "felt" god when he was a Christian, so it is a fallacy that all atheists don't know what they are missing or are searching for religion.

I have not read all the comments but most of them. I just see another proof of God's word. Professing themselves to be wise they have become fools. God promised to write His laws into mankind's heart. They know the truth of God's laws but refuse to acknowledge it. But be assured they will one day. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father. So the negative comments about faith run off my back like water I have read the end of the book and WE WIN. Praise the Lord. My suggestion to them is join up and you can win too.

Having read most of todays commnets; most were very good.
I was drawn to the verse: "In those days Israel had no king, and every man did that which was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25)
To me our nation is headed toward Anarchy or a police state. I do not know which is the worse!
A comforting verse on reason is: "Come now and let us reason together, saith the LORD; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." (Isaiah 1:18)
Another two verses are found in Hebrews 11:1 and 11:6 they are: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." ....."But without faith it is impossible to please Him (God): for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him."

Hi Folks,
When i hear someone who does not believe in Jesus or even His Father, say he or she is not afraid of death-- 1st, i question that person's sanity, and i realize that person knows nothing about life, real life-- where we a commanded to love and forgive, but most of all-- to have faith-- to believe--- all about being a positve intelligent human being.
I agree, religion tends to keep us all bound up--- my favorite book, an old one, says-- where the Spirit of the Lord is-- there is Freedom.... and freedom is all about life. In other countries freedom is restricted by religion and oppression. How can what i practise-- unconditional love and forgiveness, to mention a few of my main tenets be confused with oppressive "church" states like iran or other countries where my beliefs are illegal and even dangerous for me to voice, much less believe...
I can tell you,,, that if my country does not start knowing and understanding this road to destruction we all are on,,, soon we will be believing as Normal and practising the same oppression conducted in iran and other oppressive countries. It is wake-up time, sleepyheads... or you can go back to your delusion--- it'll never happen in my country. It will if we give the oppressors what they want.
oh, btw, atheists, get a Life.

Dear Lord I pray that You pour out ALL YOUR BLESSINGS upon each and every one in the government of the United States of America, no matter what branch they work in. I pray for each and every ones salvation and sanctification of accepting JESUS CHRIST as their LORD and SAVIOR!!! I pray dear LORD that YOU hold each and every one accountable for their words and their actions when it comes to making decisions for this country for YOU GOD!!! YOUR WILL be done FATHER not their own agenda!!! Bring this nation back to where the founding Fathers started it out as. The first act our congress did was print bibles and these were for text books for our schools, along with a hymnal. Where are they now in our schools? Where are the prayers that helped keep the evil out of our schools? Yes it was all taken away by our government and just look around and see how our society is faring in todays' world!!! Do you really think that this is where GOD wanted us to be? Murders, rapes, sodomy, thefts of elderly, thefts of all, rights stolen away from the American people, morality GODS' way destroyed and told to believe the lies that you are free to make your own choices, just to realize that you are a slave to your life style that you are choosing of degradation to ones self!!! Wake up America and pray for the LORD to open the eyes and unstop the ears and remove the veil from our leaders hearts who are running this great country into hell on a fast track. Pray that GODS' people will truly be set into place this next election, ones that HE HIMSELF will hold accountable to GOD alone for every deed done, word spoken, that will not be for the destruction of this great nation. Make YOURSELF known to one and all who will be our next elected officals. Please hold each one personally accountable to YOU LORD JESUS through the power of the HOLY SPIRIT of our Father GOD who created heaven, earth, and hell! Where will you be for eternity??? Even so come quickly LORD JESUS!!! Maranatha!!! Come!!! Amen!!!

I am not so sure that promoting religion in politics is the way to go, as even atheism is a form of religion. What will promote health, peace, sanity, and restoration in our nation is TRUTH. And, TRUTH always begins with a RELATIONSHIP with Jesus Christ.

People can call that a religion, and they can attack Truth, but over the years, a relationship with Jesus Christ has been the means of healing, filling, and restoring lives. I'm convinced that submitting this country back over to God is the only way to bring true restoration and healing to our nation.

I am reminded in Kings of the blessings and curses that happened to a nation of people, depending on their leaders' choices. There are examples of kings who allowed foreign gods and witchcraft to rule their land, and as a result, the land was under bondage and cursed. Then there were kings like Josiah and Hezekiah who chose to tear down the high places and stand for the commands of God. Courageously obeying God, they tore down demonic spirituals trongholds in their nation to bring restoration to their nation and people. I am convinced that such a stand is needed today.

In America, the more we promote and choose to lift up lies, false freedom (which is really bondage), and destructive habits (like building stores to sell condoms and then building a planned parenthood near the store to ensure that unwanted babies can be aborted), we are going to find this country in dire bondage and brokenness. The country is only free and strong as its people. Sincerely, I do not believe that promoting religion in politics will not take people out of this kind of mess. BUT...

Promoting Truth will. Jesus Christ will. He was the foundation of our nation when this country was being built by our founding fathers, and He hasn't changed.

If we can get leaders to rise up and choose to courageously stand and do the hard things of tearing down the "asherah poles" that are being build in the high places of our country, and instead lifting up the banner of Truth in Jesus Christ, we can find ourselves moving toward restoration and true freedom.

Yes, I believe it will be the practice of TRUTH of Jesus Christ and the COURAGE, and BOLDNESS in tearing down dark spiritual strongholds that will bring restoration to our country.

I have been praying that God would raise up courageous, honorable, Truth-filled leaders. I know that is His heart for this nation is healing, filling, and restoring. This generation behind us are so confused...they hear talk about choice, but they feel like they don't really have a choice. And, it's true...because so many of them don't even know the TRUTH to choose Him.

In closing, I want to remind us all that we do have choice though, and we can choose LIFE. God has given us that choice.

Deuteronomy 30:19 This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live...

I, for one, would much rather put my faith in my religion (God) than in man. Man continues to fail and has no hope of becoming infallible in this life. Those that prefer their faith in man only have to study history to witness his (our) failures. The danger for us as believers is to recognize we cannot expect Wash DC to change dramatically next 11/2 without hearts changing. It will not be a "top-down" change but rather must rise from the bottom (the electorate) with changed hearts. The elections, while important, will not be the answer. Man has struggled since the Garden of Eden and will continue to do so. God has not changed.

I have seen comments on this blog by persons claimimg to be Christian, yet avowing their position to be liberal. Everthing I have learned about liberal thought, women's lib (AKA Abortion), gay marriage, "the ends justify the means", etc., lead me to beleave that they may need to practice their faith rather then just stating something that makes themselves first in thought and morals. These same people profess what is convienient to them so as to fit their own circumstance. My prayers are for all those who cannot see the truth in God's spoken word. I pray for them. He is risen! He is risen indeed.

Attacks on one side that say religion has no reason. Attacks on another saying reason must never have faith. Hasn't this been the debate in the west for at least 2000 years? To think that faith and reason are mutually exclusive appears to disregard history. Thomas Aquinas said that the two must go hand-in-hand 750 years ago. I'd suggest a little reading and study instead of the endless mud-slinging and mindless declarations of the superiority of one versus the other.

Religion, reason and idiology have one thing in common - they can be used for good and evil.

My faith, Christianity, is based on the writings of the Bible. My head, like everyone's is filled with reason. And now we are applying religion and reason to idiology, or government.

The Bible can be twisted to destructive ends, compromising its credibility in the eyes of many, so that those who attempt to put its good commands into practice somehow are roundly and unjustly labeled "insane".

It does not help that cultists like Jim Jones (1978) destroyed 930 people, partially using scripture to fuel his own agenda and abuse. And there are many such examples of this. Without knowing exactly why, we say that this is insanity, or lack of reason.

Yet faith at points goes beyond reason, and supersedes reason at certain special points. Because of the threat of insanity, we try to suppress knowledge of miraculous events, and would have every right to do so were it not for certain wonderful and unexplainable happenings which occur to everyone's view, yet to be explained by science.

When we expect certain ponderous systems of human effort to actually work, we really are presuming something miraculous. When the thing works, as sometimes it does, we can attribute it to ourselves or we can attribute it to an invisible outside Force or Intelligence that invisibly and graciously allowed it to work.

To restore "sanity" or "rationalism" to government or ideology is not a bad thing; neither is "more religion", so long as we
understand that any of these things can be used for evil personal agendas or wisely applied to that which is genuinely fruitful and beneficial. "Faith" and "sanity" are not, therefore, mutually exclusive, but can be made to appear so by those having chosen one over the other, depending on how they talk about it.

There are abuses of religion, abuses in reason, error made to seem scientific by giving it scientific veneer when all it really is is scientifically-flavored politics. Religion likewise can be made to look bad and unreasonable by caring not about what fruit comes of religious doings.

More faith? More religion? It depends on what any person would mean by this. Any government acknowledging God's ultimate political authority is good - it puts men's authority over others in its place, not as unnecessary, but not to be abused for one's own agenda. People are sick of the abuses of reason, politics and religion, so it seems like these things are all in competition with one another. They need not be. But every individual, every government, will have to account for every lie to God. I need no Bible or religion to provide evidence to this.

Laws, ethics, morals, values are along the same spectrum, each derived from non-secular belief based personal opinions. Effectively speaking, the belief in right and wrong is just that: a belief like any religionist's. Taking away the religion but keeping the values does not prove out secular ethics as a model. Instead of trying to blame religion, try to reform it. God bless The Reformation.

God is decisive- right and wrong, black and white (and not out of context as abusive power). Liberals, atheists, (or whomever-- "feel good, self pleasing whathaveyas"), like gray areas, no one is accountable for any wrong doing, but is certainly pronounced for everything "they" see is acceptable. It's funny how they emphasize the "freedom to be anything you want to be" except when the wrong is done to them, or unless they decide. Then what judging scale do they use? They really confuse me, or irritate me, for lack of a better explanation. They say there is no wrong way to be, yet there is a wrong way to be when they decide? So are they playing God? Again, after reading some of the comments, there is no wrong, unless they say its wrong. Really? You know what's strange to me, is those that are so liberal in political view, very well punish their children for misbehaving or breaking a rule. What's up with that? Hmm. It's so oppressive right? (Jay and Jordan I have faith in you and the fight you go to everyday for the rest of us. You have your hands full. Whewh! For the love of Christ (literally), Thank you.)

The greatest president of the 19th century, A. Lincoln was often quoted "man was made for immortality". Of course while not a church going man, President Lincoln was an avid reader of the Holy Bible, much like the the greatest president of the 20th century, R. Reagan. Both these fine men, as well as millions of others well knew why, with good reason, that our nation was founded on Christian principles to the benefit of ALL who choose to become citizens. The Bible tells each of us that God will not be mocked. Wise men and women know that.
In closing, I'd highly recommend that if you have NOT READ the Bible, I would highly suggest that you NOT CRITICIZE the Bible. PICK IT UP! iT WON'T BURN YOUR HAND. READ THE BOOK OF JOHN. In that book you'll find your personal Saviour. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life".
St. Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus, writes to the people of Rome; "The wages of sin is death, But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord".
Friends, A. Lincoln & R. Reagan as well as the overwhelming majority of the founders of the United States of America were wise enough to READ THE BIBLE...ARE YOU?

First, you speak of religion. There is a difference between religion and Christianity which teaches love and forgiveness not excluding righteous judgment. Freedom is one of the greatest aspects of Christianity. Many label themselves Christian but incorrectly. Most of the comments made here in this blog are so unfriendly and caustic. I hope we never lose sight of decency and kindness toward our fellow humans. This amazes me at how angry and hateful those of you have commented in this blog. How can we expect to live together in peace without tolerance for others not to include tolerance toward crime. Christianity establishes moral guidelines for the good of the whole. Immorality is unproductive toward a free and healthy and prosperous society.

I am a Christian of deep religious faith who is at church at least twice a week and who is an ordained officer in the lay leadership of my congregation. Because of that, I am a liberal. Because of that, I usually vote for Democrats.

Because I'm a Christian, I support the separation of Church and State for, as Madison pointed out, the protection of both institutions. Due to a lot of historical reasons, mainly the high academic standards we have for clergy, Presbyterianism never spread far from the east coast. If there is ever an establishment of religion (O, "constitutional conservatives", where art thou?), it will not be my Church that gets established. I was baptized as an infant, I believe that Christ is spiritually but not physically present in the Sacrament, I don't believe it's my duty to "save souls", and I believe that because I take the Bible seriously, I can't take it literally. I grew up in the Deep South being the Wrong Kind of Christian.

How many of you agitating for more religion in government comfortable with being the Wrong Kind of Christian? It ain't easy, let me tell you.

I actually like talking with atheists, and I think we have a lot to learn from each other. I can't stand those fundamentalist atheists who are dogmatic, but then I can't stand fundamentalist Christians or Muslims who are dogmatic, either.

Hi Mr. Sekolow,

Good trip to the Netherlands?

Saying, "Imagine More Religion?". Some atheists would rather quote John Lennon's "Imagine" - "Imagine there's no religion" among its verses.

Don't be so hard of Amerian atheists being leery on Christianity in America. After all, it is the majority faith group trying to inbue, impose it's religious-based values in the States.

Surely the ACLJ are not too happy Muslims in Muslim majority states imbuing and imposing their religious-based values in government and on non-Muslims too, including Christians. Can't have double or triple standards there. Unless, the ACLJ really think a specific religion in the States is greatest, bestest, mostest and such and have special, primary and prime place in the States' political and social sphere.

And can't call on atheists and Muslims to join hands with the ACLJ on things they don't like when most of the time the ACLJ are not being so nice towards atheists and Muslims on things the ACLJ Christians don't like about them. At least atheists have more consistency and credibility than ACLJ.

I'm terrified of Muslim extremists and fanatics and would dissociate from them, nor sanction their thinking and actions, nor be part of an organisation of and for them. The ACLJ on the other hand, feeds on and from, provides Christian fanatics and extremists with sugar-coated "intellectual" cover for their racism, bigotry and ignorance with nice sounding soundbites such as freedom, free speech, human rights, being constitutional etc.

But of course, the ACLJ has it own purpose and reason for being in a free society comprising its members and for their paticular needs and specific concerns.

These many fine points aside, it occurs to me that this essay, in common with most others of the genre, makes a remarkably scary assumption, and I would posit, one most unworthy of someone who professes a concern for human rights. Why is it that believers presume that without a blind belief in, to put it kindly, wildly improbable religious tenets, human beings would be reduced to indescribable barbarism? What does this assumption say about their conception of human nature, or, indeed, human rights? We are not talking about innate instincts, or even common sense, but deeply counterintuitive (if not mutually contradictory) tenets and dogmas which need to be held sacred, and fealty to which needs to be enforced by any means available, which is the saving grace of an otherwise doomed humanity? what a superlatively depraved view of their own species.

Unfortunately, religion has been at odds for centuries with knowledge, reason, science, and enlightenment. The fruits of knowledge, reason, science, and enlightenment have led to our secular constitution, technological advancements, improvements in health care, etc.- the very things people in this country (and the world) appreciate and cherish.

If I had to choose between religion and atheism, I must admit I would likely choose atheism. In general, the people I do know that are atheists are more educated, rational, knowledgeable, compassionate, and "people and earth friendly," compared to the religious people I know. The atheists I know treat this life (the only life we have that we can be sure of) as precious, for all creation, and don't exploit nature or fellow man like many religious people I know who believe they have "God's favor" and take advantage of a belief that earth and all of nature are theirs to exploit (and for the record, I choose to see and define "god" as the sum total of all things- I "see" and "experience" "god" everyday- in that I reject the notion of a human invented “god,” I guess I could be, and frequently am, labeled an atheist- but in reality, isn't everyone an atheist to some degree? It just depends on how many gods they dismiss.)

Polytheism has evolved to monotheism, and this progression suggests that monotheism will eventually be replaced by naturalism, Humanism, freethought, agnosticism, etc. Belief in a god has become less necessary over the years as knowledge and science have consistently provided answers for the questions people previously needed belief in gods or a god to answer. We ultimately have to ask if there is really any good evidence for any of the gods ever proposed by man (other than in the minds of the people/societies who created and perpetuated these gods). Personally, I have yet to find such evidence. All the gods and religions of most of the societies in the past have fallen by the wayside with the societies that invented them. Only a few persist- the most commonly known are Jehovah/Yahweh of Judaism, the Trinity/triune god of Christianity, and Allah of Islam- and it seems a safe bet that the gods and religions of today will share the same fates as those of the past (Zeus, etc.) - they too will perish with the societies that created them.

Imagine more religion- no thank you. To me that carries with it a track record of human rights violations, suppression of knowledge and scientific advancement, and freedom of thought. I prefer to imagine more knowledge, reason, science, and enlightenment – the very things that I think most of us, regardless of religious or non-religious adherence, would agree have led to the very things we seem to cherish.

Just glancing through the attendant posts to this article (and to other "On Faith" discussions), I would say the crazier posts tend to be from believers, and the more thoughtful ones (and with generally better grammar) come from the atheists and agnostics. Just a general tendency, not a strict correlation.

Now don't get me wrong - enjoy reading the colorful entries as much as the next person and would certainly not wish "dullness and oppression" of the old godless Soviet Union. But religious "faith" is, in a sense, a practice of deliberate delusion, people believing whatever they want to believe. And that always leads to conflict, because reason can have no influence on these believers.

So let the "On Faith" conversation give the crazies a place to display their devout thinking. It can only have the good effect of showing reasonable people the potential harms of religious belief.

IF he doesn't show, then then it means the NOI Muslims/Moslims/Muslums Still Haven't assimilated. So Why should the others.

IMAGINE if the the 911 Ishlami "Magnificent-19" Martyrs could appear & thus have MUHAMMAD ATTA Stand-Before the Cameras in D.C. and given an opportunity to Apologize to the Dead Americans and the Rest of the World to Kafir & maybe Islamics??

PS: America really to create a Secular RELIGIOUS POLICE, not of the I.R.S., but the FBI & Local Police Departments. i[WE] have the entire plan for Congress.

"Frankly, it would be scary to live in a nation without religion."

Like "scary" old Scandinavian countries with their richer, happier, safer, healthier, longer-lived, more law abiding, more equal, better educated, less obese, more supported yet on average freer to act citizenry, perhaps?

You want more religion (Christianity of course) in government? If the Christian faith were more entwined with the government, wouldn't that mean that mean more social programs to help the needy- like welfare. I'll assume that you're not a supporter of those sorts of government programs.

You can't say that these such social programs aren't included in the discussion because they're not powers of the government listed in the Constituion. Jesus isn't in the Constitution either. If you get to inject a particular religion into government, then at least be consistent about it. Also, don't pretend you're a "constitutional conservative". Espousing christian views and calling them "constitutional" is quite progressive if you ask me- at least when you're talking about a document that specifically requires that there be no established religion.

Also, I'm for a smaller government and lower taxes. However, I also don't care who marries who, or who builds what church/mosque/temple where. I think that there's a huge segment of the population who would identify as fiscally conservative but socially liberal. I'm a catholic, I attend church every sunday and likely will continue to do so. However, I also have the awareness to realize that I don't know everything, and that plenty of people of other faiths are good, moral people who's beliefs shouldn't be undermined.

Out of the Thousands of Religions on Earth, AMERICA should never have a "Open-Arm" policy to Any iSLAMI//ESAUmi (Muslims)! Why?

By Citing, in vain, Mr. Akbar ahMAD's tome on our Forefathers & Mothers {peace be upon Them ALL} in order to justify (Islam) as be on 'EQUAL' terms or at Par with US "KeFFiRS (none Ishlami//Esaumi) all because President JEFFERSON {pbuh} insinuated or had a copy of the first English translated Koran that ALL Ishlamis should be "WELCOME AS FULL CITIZENZ" Yet

Yet, SATANIC VERSUS LOVING Fundamental Ishlami's don't want to give US KAF{FIRS the same-Equality {Especially any Kaf{fir RELIGIONs} as he seeks here, in say SAUDI Arabia, or Yemen, Or Pakistan, or Malaysia et al or in Most of the

COMMENT: Before Any Islami can have 100% Freedom Here or recognition, That ALL of the 54 OIC Nations must Disolve themselves (or else Leave withdraw from The 'SECULAR' U.N.'s 138 nations) and Make a 1st Amendment Law [same There ins] thus guaranteeing true freedom! Then HEALING OF NATIONS , World Peace & Happyness will BE realized. But Not Until Then! Any Body?

Fact: In the "Land of the Waters" Guyana is the place where ISRAEL could have settled and Should Have Arisen. But It's too late.

With Less than 800,000 folks, It is Already 17% Ishlami. And with the Help of The Elders of Saudizion, Elders of Turkeyzion and Elders of Iranzion, now Elders of Syriazion r sneaking in there and greasing & corrupting a Dictator therein; which is a great Conspiracy to ISLAMICIZE GUYANA from within in less than 50 years(and via BRAZIL Territory; who's Ishlami population is growing exponentially too and taking over cities or building them).

POINT: ALL 54 OICs Must "FULLY-OPEN-UP" To all KAFIRS Religions. Note: I've Been to many Nations. And when i[WE] was in Jehdda, Mecca. If i had a Megon david (Star of David) or cross on me neck openly, i'm sure the Religious Police would've had a field day.

Before i[WE] Begin: Never forget that ISLAM has thier own United [Ishlami//Esaumi] NATIONS. It's called the "54 Organization of ISLAMIC Conference" (aka code name for States).

We[i] agree with ex- Asst. Secretary of State, FRANK GAFFNEY's analysis of The real-Threat posed to US Non-Islamic [KAAFIR nations] via The ISHLAMI CREEP, SCARE, aka AL TAQIYA or via the ELDERS Of WAHHABI-zion & ELDERS OF AYATOLLAH-zion tricks to annihilate Israel & then Conquer the West via a New-CALIPHITE {TURKEY + SYRIA + IRAN& CO. taking the Lead}!

Note: Awhile back, Sunni PAKISTAN has long ago secretly gifted the "SUNNI-A-BOMB" or Pledged Such, to SAUDI's!?? And Lately IRAN (Who has the SHIA-A-BOMB) & SYRIA (includes Pakistan) have Given the new Islami-Nazi OTTOMAN TURK's the Secrets to making a JIHHADI-BOMB.

Note again: Again. Islamic Nations, like Ishlami Suicidal Bomb Individuals, will commit such but using ATOMIC-BOMBS on a National Level (simultaneously). This is what they are up to; besides crawling into/Sneaking into our (Not Their) Free Society's creating Great Distractions & the AL TAQIYAists & their ventriloquists planting Future Plots within.

So, The 54 ISHLAMi U.N. [O.I.C.] are too dumb (low I.Q/'s) to be Superior; So they are massively Buying our Weapons {i.e. Saudi's recent $60 Billion Purchase from US, which in the future they will use it against us by Proxy) yet Satanically are Copy-Cating Our Patents etc behind our backs [Russia's back too]... and Mass Producing them secretly. And Their sneaky 3-face helpers are the EVIL-CHINKO EMPIREs (China, N. Korea).

there is nothing-Wrong by having ISLAMIC PHOBIA thoughts or rut gut feelings.

Jordan,

Your example of your opposition to the Islamic Community Center is not in the context that I described. Nowhere were the proponents of the center trying to use the government to impose their religion on us.

You opposed the Community Center even though they were trying to exercise their rights under the First Amendment. Behavior like that shows that you are not concerned about defending religious liberty.

Sorry, I still think guns and religion are a bad mix. Religion to justify ANY action based on a voice from above instead of reason and guns to supply the firepower. This country would be better off without both.

Imagine more religion? Hmm, now what would happen if that happened. Would that mean one particular religious tradition would become more powerful or that all religious groups would have more influence over the way we live and the laws we live by? What if Islam became the dominant religion and Sekulow had to live according to its dictates? Would he feel the same way he does now? What if Catholicism raged back to the forefront and the Vatican started dictating public policy in the US? There is no reason to believe that more religion would have anything other than a negative effect on large segments of the population. As someone who does not ascribe to any belief system under the umbrella of "religion" I would like to express that when I read about religious groups trying to bring about legal or social change and forcing others to be subject to the dictates of their religion (teaching intelligent design in public schools, tax-payer funded foot baths, denying a woman control over her body, denying homosexuals equal rights under the law, etc) I feel like my rights are about to be trampled on. I don't want to live my life oppressed for my beliefs, like Christians in Egypt or Buddhists in Indonesia. If you want to see what more religion can mean, just look at Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia.

First, not all atheists are liberals, leftists, or democrats.

"If you look at atheists commenting here, you'll see that they have a much greater obsession with religion than evangelicals"
Whoever posts here probably has more passion for the topic than the average citizen. I come here to debate the topic because I enjoy debating the topic, does that make me more obsessed than the believers that post here?

“They will be an insignificant part of one big joke”
Then why worry?

“It is all too clear that their mental tussle over whether to believe weighs on their mind.”
Nope, wrong…. I no more tussle mentally than those on the other side of the debate.

“The American left is scared of ordinary Americans, those of us who "cling" to guns and religion.”
There you go with that stereotype again, atheist=liberal/leftist/communist. I’m a gun owner as well, I vote anti-tax, I vote smaller government. I simply have no use for religion and I don’t want our country being run based on archaic religious codes, any of them, and the zealots that cling to them.
“Religious faith has been an inspiration for the arts, sciences, humanitarian work, and fundamental rights”
I love this argument… yes religion did support the arts, specifically when the Catholic church ran Europe from within fortified castle walls, where kings served at the mercy of the church. The only art that was funded was of a religious nature, in most cases by law. Non religious art was not funded and in many cases not even allowed. Religion ‘inspired’ art the same way it also inspired the executions of heretics.
Science: to a point… any ‘scientist’ however that made observations that were not directly attributable to the church’s god were, well you know what happened to them.
Fundamental rights? That’s a fairly recent addition to the doctrines and still not quite complete. For most of Christian history fundamental rights were hardly what they are today. Witches certainly didn’t have fundamental rights, nor did slaves, women, or the Native American ‘heathens’. And of course now in the U.S., Muslims don’t seem to have the same fundamental rights afforded Christians either.

“Why are liberals scared of religion's influence in politics?”
You answered your own question, we (though I’m still slightly miffed at being called a ‘liberal’) are vigilant because religious influence in politics:
“. . . has nothing to do with faith and everything to do with power.”

Nothing makes people more certain they're right than the assurance that God backs them up, and that makes them scary.

It turns ideological differences into crusades, and makes it ok to behave in completely irrational, dangerous ways.

Some people of faith have done tremendous things in the world. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of them. So was Jesus. Let me remind you that some of the people who had the most trouble with them, and with their messages of social justice, also claimed to be people of faith. Let me also remind you who was on the side of violence.

Let's not insult great men of faith by lumping all those who claim to be the faithful together. Some clearly aren't worthy of the title.

P.S.: If those on the right continue to trust the American people, why the guns?

In the above I read:

Atheists know religion academically, but they just can't wrap their heads around faith.

In fact, a recent testing shows we know religion better than the religious. Part of that is knowing that faith is self-delusion and can be produced in most people by any competent hypnotist. Do we want our government driven by that? I think not.

I ask the Christians who want faith based government how they would feel if that were the Muslim faith?

"Why are liberals scared of religion's influence in politics?" I can only speak for myself, but perhaps it's because of the certainty which each religion claims to know the truth about life after death and all the rules for getting to their (sometimes as quickly as possible). Don't you ever wonder about someone's motives when they think they are just here for the short run and that they are "definitely" going to a better life. Excuse me if I don't want anyone like that near the nuclear button.

What could be more oppressive than an imaginary deity who knows your every thought? Aren't you worried that slightest bit concerned that most theist don't even agree on which god is the real deal. Each faith believes the other is going to it's version of Hell and yet there's no compelling evidence for even one version of Hell.

Since the FFRF is located in the United States, it is no surprise that Christians are the ones who most commonly try to evade the First Amendment and run afoul their strong support for our religious civil liberties. Your comment about Moslems is silly. If a Moslem tried to use our government to impose his religion on us, America would see the ACLJ standing standing side-by-side with the FFRF in complaining.

Your representation of recent history shows a lack of seriousness. You cannot be so ignorant of our recent economic history. Yes, the Democrats (though not the progressives) have been in partial control and Republicans have done everything they could to stop things. It's absurd that you ignore the people who were responsible for this recession.

My concern is not that religion influences politics. It always has and always will. My concern is that leaders use religion to manipulate their followers, lie about religion, falsely blame others for results, and then claim to be a follower of Jesus while explicitly rejecting what He is said to have taught in the gospels. Why did the Southern Baptist Convention split from American Baptists? Why did the KKK require their members to be (Protestant) Christians? Why do leaders invoke Christianity so often, even if they are advocating behaviors that are contrary to what Jesus taught?

Because it works, it's a succesful way to get people to join in, not because it is right. You are right, this is about power, but if religious people vote for the right, it is because they have been misled. What would Jesus do?

He would never vote for reactionaries and parties that don't care about the poor.

..."Atheists know religion academically, but they just can't wrap their heads around faith. It is all too clear that their mental tussle over whether to believe weighs on their mind."

You've made a HUGE assumption about atheists which is colored by your world view - not, I'm sure, by actual conversation with atheists.

I actually CAN wrap my head around faith and so can most of the other atheists I know. I have faith in many things, I just don't have any faith in a god. There is no "mental tussle" for me and it doesn't weigh on my mind. I have no fear of death, I have no need to believe that I will continue in some way in spite of physical death and I'm quite capable of being moral without looking to a bible (which is filled with prejudice, violence and discrimination by the way)to tell me how.

..."When I imagine no religion, I envision the dullness and oppression of the Soviet Union."

Wow. This is very stereotypical. Atheism is NOT communism. Please try to keep that in mind. The Soviet system was a political system that discouraged religion for its own reasons.

Interestingly, as an atheist, I realize that all I have is the here and now and I try every day to make that as good as it possibly can be. Music, art, books, friends, love, respect, caring...these are all things that I make part of my life on a daily basis. The beauty of the natural world gives me great pleasure - no dullness, no oppression. Thinking, reasoning, analysis, encouraging the minds talents and hearts of my children, enjoying each and every day that I'm alive on this earth - the very antithesis of dullness and oppression!!

When I think of oppression, unfortunately I often think of the Christian church through the ages - the Crusades, the Inquisition, burning and hanging "witches", condemning their priests and nuns to a life of celibacy, rejecting homosexuals, confining the beauty that is our sexuality to the boundaries of marriage, denying women divorces from abusive husbands...I could go on but I'm getting depressed. I am more free, and less oppressed, out here with my atheist friends.

But I'm glad it makes YOU feel better. :)
