Blessed are the meek

Washington Post political reporter Karen Tumulty wrote Monday about the growing use of the idea of "American exceptionalism" by political conservatives as a "battle cry from a new front in the ongoing culture wars."

Sarah Palin and many other prominent conservatives assert that "God has granted America a special role in human history." It is this belief about America's destiny that they say is "under attack" by liberals who downplay America's distinctiveness.

Are these leaders saying that America has a special relationship with God?

How do you interpret this?

It is fashionable (and cliché) for politicians to pump bromides into the air about the uniqueness and superiority of American ideals. One simple way to measure the sincerity and seriousness of these politicians is by challenging them to resolve some festering obstacles to American exceptionalism, especially in the area of human rights. With respect to these core values, we can be peerless, but only if we stop acting like our peers.

Consider some examples:

America still puts people to death for crimes. This is hardly exceptional. The point here is not that human life is sacred. The point here is not even to suggest the impossibility of reconciling the death penalty with a belief in the sanctity of human life. The point here is much simpler: that, in the realm of capital punishment, according to Amnesty International, we presently keep company with such ingloriously led countries as Cuba, Iran, and North Korea, while much of the civilized world has abolished--or is moving toward abolition of--the death penalty.

American politicians still use hateful rhetoric against racial and religious minorities. According to a recent report by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), elected officials and some also-rans in American politics have repeatedly mocked and stereotyped Muslims in the post-9/11 environment. Perhaps this explains the recent spate of anti-mosque protests around the nation and why 39% of surveyed Americans believe that Muslims in our country should have to carry special identification cards naming their religion. Sadly, none of this is exceptional. If we continue to alienate Muslims, we will become more like France, which is hardly a fountain of optimism. If we oppose the construction of mosques in America, then we are morally in accord with Saudi Arabia, which forbids non-Muslims from building houses of worship. If we require Muslims in America to carry special identification cards on the basis of their religion, it should not surprise us to learn that there are historical antecedents for this in Afghanistan and Germany.

Being exceptional is not simply a matter of believing that we are better than others by way of divine entitlement. Being the best requires effort and humility. Politicians who celebrate American exceptionalism should walk the talk on human rights. Anything less would be lip service and laziness, both of which are fundamentally out-of-step with the American character.

Britain thinks she is exceptional. France thinks she is. Ditto Germany, Sweden, Norway and Belgium, not to mention Holland, Denmark,
and every other country on earth.

Everyone is exceptional, and no-one is.

“But the populus who think America is something exceptional are the Palin-worshipping, dimwit majority of flag-hugging, Jesus lovers who infest this land. They have their GEDs proudly hanging on the fake wood paneling of their mobile homes.”

Regrettably we are also infested with narrow-minded people that vastly overestimate their own personal exceptionalism and barf out spiteful and bigoted statements such as this.
Veerle1, you and I are probably in agreement that ‘American exceptionalism’ is a potentially poisonous drug, but I cannot side with your sophomoric methodology of name-calling and stereotyping people or their economic situations. I find it no classier, accurate, or useful than blaming all Muslims for 9/11.

Tou're right.

But the populus who think America is something exceptional are the Palin-worshipping, dimwit majority of flag-hugging, Jesus lovers who infest this land.

They have their GEDs proudly hanging on the fake wood paneling of their mobile homes.

Yes, God is with us and life is good.

Your title "Blessed are the Meek" belies the contents of the article. Capital punishment is not the sole determinant for judging exceptionalism. You would have Americans "Turn the other Cheek" in response to Muslims who have killed thousands of Americans, as well as other Muslims? We do not live in a perfect world, therefore we cannot adopt the idealistic practices that might otherwise work in a perfect world. America at least does not preach or practice killing of non-believers for no other reason than they are of a different faith.

Let's not kid ourselves, for the current president, Mr Barack Hussein Obama, is held accountable by the Muslim world. Since he started sucking up to them at the beginning of his term, he has seriously compromised the sovereignty of the US and the ability to make foreign policy decisions accordingly, without checking with his Muslim buddies overseas and to see what they think about his decisions. Heaven forbid he should decide something for this nation that would chap some Muslim leaders cheeks.

The idea of American Exceptonalism pushes us toward the very kind of behavior Mr. Singh notes in his article. Exceptonalism holds that we are superior to other nations, and therefore not morally accountable to others; it also means that we cannot learn from them - since we are already "advanced" beyond them. Therefore many "exceptionalists" will not look at the lessons others have learned in regard to capital punishment, health care, etc. Since we are superior, we are also not accountable to anyone else - we are, effectively, above the laws that govern others. This was the claim of the bush administration, and remains in effect, in many ways, in the current one. Those who do not want us to sign treaties with other nations banning nuclear arms or landmines, for instance, believe that, since the U.S. would only use these in a "moral" way, we do not need these treaties - they only burden us. This idea also carries over into environmental problems - exceptionalism means that, although we use one quarter of the world's resources, and produce as significant an amount of its pollutants, since we are "exceptional," we cannot be held accountable - it is others who will have to change, not us. Exceptionalism holds that our culture is the best, therefore others should adopt our cultural norms - there is no need for us to seek to understand others' culture, to learn others languages, etc. It is a form of cultural elitism and arrogance.

Thank you, Mr. Singh, for getting the phrase, "Walk the talk" correct. So many people to day mis-speak, saying, "Walk the walk", etc. However, on your main point, you are incorrect. In fact, the USA is exceptional in the history of the world. Exceptional does not mean perfect, by any means. But to deny the former because of the latter is irrational, which you otherwise do not appear to be from your article.

All Religions should be outlawed.
Until mankind evolves beyond the mentality of cavemen, mankind will remain in a state of constant war with itself. Put away the rites, rituals, and superstitions of cavemen. Evolve. Join the 21st century.

It is pretty ridiculous to debate something that will very soon be a given. Everyday some action of the poorly informed, those lacking critical thinking ability, greedy corporations and the dogmatically mind-warped shoves us closer to the status of a third world nation. There is every indication that the process will be accelerated in the next few years. The most interesting factor, however, is that the belief itself is and has been the prime force in disproving its validity.
