Fear, fairness and Fox News: Three forces shaping how we think about American Muslims

A religion is a philosophy, nothing more and nothing less. It is a set of beliefs, rituals and rules for living to which certain people ascribe. A religion is EVERY BIT as liable to criticism as ANY OTHER philosophy and it there is NOTHING "bigoted" about criticizing a "faith", provided the criticism is rooted is facts and reason.

It is no more "bigoted" to criticize Islam, or certain interpretations of it, than it is to criticize Christianity or Stoicism or Liberalism or Nazism or any other philosophy or ethos!

People CHOOSE to believe in a religion in the same way one chooses to be a liberal or a conservative and when one says "I am a Muslim" or "I am a Christian" they are laying claims to certain BELIEFS and affiliating themselves, willy-nilly, with others who do the same.

Theists themselves are constantly criticizing each other's beliefs. I routinely see Christians taking wildly divergent stances on various issues and justifying those stances by citing scripture or their particular interpretation of it. I mean, the single biggest group of religions in this nation is called "Protestant".

In fact, one could almost say that all three Abrahamic Religions not only criticize but ARE themselves "criticisms" of other religions. Judiasm is a criticism of Bronze Age Paganism and various practices, such as human sacrifice, associated with it. Christianity is a criticism of Judaism and Islam is even more obviously a criticism of both of THEM.

Why, then, is it apparently so hard for so many of us to believe that different Muslims think and act in different ways? The Koran is a long, complicated and often vague book and, leaving aside the West's own religious disputes, we can't even always agree on the Constitution, which is a few pages long!

It must be acknowledged that there is a tremendous variety of opinion within Islam and any other faith. I don't understand why some people can't see this or why others insist on seeing criticism of Jihadism as a criticism of the Islamic community as a whole. The fact remains, however, that SOME sects of Islam ARE violent and at odds with the Republic. These need to be watched and understood (so far as possible) just as ANY OTHER ideologically motivated group that bears our nation ill-will, whether based on a religious or secular philosophy; we can't give them a past just because they attach a 'god' to their violent ideology any more than we give the Klan a pass because they mask their hatred with their own sick brand of Christianity.

One can criticize Islam or any other philosophy without being a “bigot”. In this day and age, when so many of the 'faithful' seem intent on using political violence to inflict their will on others, we NEED to criticize these politicized “religious” groups whether Islamic, Christian or other and we can no longer allow people to spew any kind of nonsense, attach a “god” to it and then call it “faith” and hold it above criticism!

Why we should be very concerned about Islam:

Yes, the Foxification of the American public discourses has an effect. Day after day Glenn Beck and others feed the people who trust them with false, ahistoric and out-of-context information and Islam and Muslim, creating suspicion and negative attitudes against Islam and Muslim. Those negative attitudes harden as they are exposed to vitriolic debates on immigration, cultural assimilation and the news of terrorism perpetrated by Muslims. Republicans like Huckabee are not helping; rather they are stoking the anti-Muslim sentiments just for political gains. It’s that simple. He should be ashamed.

You stated some important facts, especially in regards to fox News. isn't it logical that we should hold a hearing on Fox News - as a source of discord in the land of the free?

There are those amongst us who feel threatened by religious radicals whatever they may call themselves, particularly when they are organized.

An individual should be able to worship any God or as many Gods as he or she chooses so long as he or she does not attempt to convert others against their will.

Organized religion as such is counter productive.

The islamic "debate" lost two ears (mine) immediately after watching the video of Daniel Pearl being beheaded, using a [purposely] dull knife. Go home, wherever that may be.

The world can probably do without this fatalist cancer. Or perhaps not. While I am not allowed to judge the hearts of others by my belief system, I am allowed to classify the fruit of their actions.

Muslims largely support Jihad against the U.S. and Israel. What's to trust?

Muslims in the U.S. bear little resemblance to their counterparts in Europe. Most are Americans first, Muslims second, and happy to be here.

women aren't paid anything like 20% less than men for the same work
72% of African-American children are born to unmarried parents
there are essentially zero verified cases of anyone in the USA contracting AIDS by heterosexual contact with someone who got it by heterosexual contact

These facts just don't push the liberal/multicultural agenda, so they aren't important for people to know.
