Support Mosque at Tip of Manhattan, Urge ADL to change its Stance
For months, in New York City there has been a boiling controversy over plans to build a peace-committed mosque and Islamic cultural center two blocks from the site of the World Trade Centers. Last week, the Anti-Defamation League threw the national Jewish community into this debate by opposing the construction of the planned mosque.
The Shalom Center, after consultations with a remarkable array of rabbis and other Jewish leaders from a broad spectrum of Jewish life, supports the building of the mosque and strongly disagrees with the ADL's position.
The statement of these leaders, a list of the 30 initiating signers including Rabbis from a very broad spectrum of Jewish life -- Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, Reform, and Renewal is below.
You can add your name to this statement by clicking here:
We also ask you to join in calling the ADL to ask them to reverse their position. Call 212/885-7700; to reach the office of Abraham Foxman, its director, press "1" and then enter "Fox").
And if you are in or near NYC, please join in a vigil on Thursday noon at the site of the planned mosque, 45 Park Place, to join voices in a serious and devoted vigil. (Take #1 subway to Park Place.)
You can also see all this information on our website's Home Page , in the entry called "Take Action."
With blessings of shalom, salaam, shantih --peace,
Arthur
T
his call has been initiated by 30 Jewish leaders, including Rabbis from a very broad spectrum of Jewish life -- Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, Reform, and Renewal.
Rabbis Rebecca Alpert (Temple University); Dennis Beck-Berman ; Leila Gal Berner; Amy Eilberg (Jay Phillips Center for Interfaith Learning, St. Paul, MN); Michael Feinberg; Laura Geller (Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills); Everett Gendler (Emeritus, Phillips Academy, Andover, MA ; Emeritus, Temple Emanuel, Lowell, MA); Roberto D. Graetz (Temple Isaiah, Lafayette,CA); Margaret Holub; Nancy Fuchs Kreimer; Joyce Galaski; Marc Gopin; Peter Knobel; Mordechai Liebling; Ellen Lippmann (Kolot Chayeinu); Or Rose; Brant Rosen; Jeff Roth; Zalman Schachter-Shalomi; Gerald Serotta; David Shneyer; Burton L. Visotzky (Jewish Theological Seminary); Brian Walt (Taanit Tzedek-Jewish Fast for Gaza); Arthur Waskow (The Shalom Center); Sheila Peltz Weinberg (Institute for Jewish Spirituality); Simkha Weintraub;
and Cherie Brown (National Coalition-Building Inst) Jeffrey Dekro; Arlene Goldbard (Shalom Center president); Cindy Greenberg (Shalom Center board and Kolot Chayeinu president); Judith Plaskow; Jane Ramsey, and Prof. Russell G. Pearce (Fordham University School of Law).
(All affiliations are noted for identification only.)
The statement follows:
As Jews committed to religious freedom, to honest dialogue, to peacemaking, and to the celebration of the One God, we strongly support the plans of the Cordoba Initiative to build a mosque and Islamic cultural center at the tip of Manhattan, near the site of the World Trade Centers destroyed on 9/11/01.
The Cordoba Initiative took that name precisely to celebrate the history of that city and neighboring areas of Andalusia in what is now Spain, where for centuries Jews, Christians, and Muslims lived together not only in mutual tolerance but in mutual harmony.
The leaders of the Córdoba Initiative, Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf and his wife Daisy Khan, have written and spoken innumerable times about the importance of interfaith dialogue and shared work for peace among the Abrahamic communities.
They have planned the mosque not simply because they have a "right" to build there, but because they want it to be a beacon of Muslim peacemaking in direct critique of the terrorist violence that destroyed the Twin Towers on 9/11/01.
To affirm that we support the building of the Cordoba Initiative cultural center and mosque, we invite all Jews of good will who can physically gather at noon on Thursday, August 5, at its intended site at 45 Park Place, to join voices in a serious and devoted vigil. (Take #1 subway to Park Place.)
At the same time, we think it necessary to make clear our deep distress at the decision of the Anti-Defamation League to oppose these plans.
Though the ADL has often done good work, in this specific case -- whatever its intention -- it has undermined those very adherents of Islam who uphold the Quran's teachings of peace, who condemn terrorism, and who share with some Jews, some Christians, and some others a commitment to peaceful dialogue. The ADL's action disparages Islam's commitment to the Unity of God. And it risks encouraging hatred for all of Islam by Jews and others in American society.
This behavior by the ADL cannot be justified on the basis of the hostile reactions of some New Yorkers - a minority of the nearby neighborhood -- while the neighborhood community council and hundreds of family members of the dead of 9/11 have endorsed the mosque. The ADL's action may indeed help to fire up exactly those unthinking emotions filled with rage and ignorance..
So we also invite Jews to call the Anti-Defamation League to join in briefly, politely, and firmly asking the ADL to change its position. Its phone number is 212/885-7700. To reach the office of Abraham Foxman, its director, press "1" and then enter "Fox."

1977 Enoch Powell defends Rivers Of Blood Speech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fw0rUJbE9k
This is terrifying, it is a WARNING from history. Powell understood exactly how politicians were betraying ordinary decent people in Britain of all races, creeds and colors and this is, exactly what is happening in Britain and America at an accelerated pace, today. The kissing has to stop. The political class has to draw a line in the sand in confronting Islamofascism and Islamonazism or the United States and Britain will end up in Civil War.

Rabbi Arthur Wakow defended the "Flying Imams", Cindy Sheehan, and he also calls for Israel to lift the Gaza blockade.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Waskow
Mahathir Mohamad also calls for a lifting of the blockade, and Feisal Abdul Rauf is part of Mahathir's group , and has been so for at least four and half years.
http://www.perdana4peace.org/agenda.aspx?x=3
Rabbi Waskow is eccentric, and predictable.
Shame on Rabbi Waskow for not only choosing to do the wrong thing, but for also trying to censor those few who are speaking the truth.
The ADL should stand firm, and Rabbi Waskow should be put down.

For thoe opposed to the mosque. May I remind you that when the Jews were kicked out of Spain, most of them ended up in welcoming Muslim countries. And is it not true that the golden age of the Jews just also happens to be when they were under the rule of Muslims in Spain?
Perhaps the person who wrote about no Muslim cultural contribution for 1,000 years should read a book or two about Islamic history and it's contribution to science.
When a new America declared it's independence from Brittania, who was it that 1st recognized the new independent nation... yes, it was a Muslim country, Morocco.

Shalom Rabbi Arthur. As a Muslim American, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this courageous, fair and patriotic stance. In college, I had many Jewish friends, and in fact one of two best friends was Jewish. We shared much together and supported each other during the good and tough times, and to this day, this friendship has had a lasting impression on me. Your support of the Muslim community's efforts in Manhattan reminds me very much of that friendship, and I can only hope that our two communities can continue to cooperate and work together in peace.

Islam has declared war on the West. Why build a nest of spies near the World Trade Center?
Should we have had German immigrants during WWII building Nazi headquarters in Washington, DC, near the then new Pentagon? After all, using the (il)logic of some of the people posting up here, to prevent that would have been a violation of Freedom of Speech.

A 'peace-committed mosque' and an 'islamic cultural center'...
So thewalls will sport plenty of pictures of 'peacefully' beaten women who were raped or were just trying to learn to drive a car or attend a school, some stoning the adultress shots and 'peacefully' beheaded infidels.
When will ALL you hypocrites stop spreading the filth of organized religion and move the world toward peace?

Foxman was wrong. We are all allowed to make mistakes once in a while, but as the respresentative of ADL, the mistake was multiplied a million times more in proportion: it is as if the National Organization of Women saying women deserve less pay for the same work as done by a man.

This country boasts about its freedom, claiming to have a superior society in terms of human rights etc...all people are treated equally. In the bill of rights the very foundation of the U.S. consitution, it clearly states in the 1st ammend......ement, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. "PROHIBITING THE FREE EXCERSICE" and then when a group of people want to create a community center, a house of worship..."its is disrespectful" and "dishonorbale" saying it is an insult to the families and those that lost their lives at the world trade centers... When the leaders of this country are saying things like this it shows this countries hypocrisy. When people are gathered outside protesting the contsruction of a house of worship it shows the closedminded, hate filled hearts of this nation. When will mankind open their hearts and embrace all people of this earth as their brothers and sisters. When will mankind realize that only by working together with love can our civilization truly advance forward. that prejudice destroys the very essence of what human beings are.

Gosh, what's the big deal. Why are we claiming that this is free country and we spread democracy but Muslims can not build mosque? No big deal, mosque, synagogue, church or temple, its God's place, except rednecks hate mosque, but who cares about rednecks. Any logical person would not have a problem with mosque at 9/11 site but would have a problem for not catching those who committed 9/11 attack.

This is a slap in the face to everyone who lost someone in the 911 tragedy, and more, much, much more. It is a slap in the face to every American Citizen. It is a slap in the face to our forefathers. It is a slap in the face to all who have fought and died to keep American safe and free. It is TREASON. Until the day that those aiding the powers, both foreign and domestic, who pose threats to the USA are hung we will not cease to work to bring these disrespectful traitors to justice. NO MOSQUE ON GROUND MADE SACRED WITH AMERICAN BLOOD, DUH!

Just what the world needs: an Islamic cultural center! There has been no significant Islamic cultural innovations in the past 1000 years aside from refinement of their existing means of murder, mayhem, and torture. It's a dying culture -- the only way they have of extending its reach is by murdering, killing or imprisoning all foes that stand in their way.
The cornerstone of Islamic culture from my perspective is used to:
1) Prevent free intermingling of the sexes.
2) Hide/shield their body form -- and in many instances (and especially the women) even their face negating all facial expressions.
3) Institutionalized sexual discrimination in which nen and women have defined roles — the husband as breadwinner and the wife as mother.
They maintain this culture solely through coercion and religious indoctrination.
This is not a culture I wish to emulate or commemorate.

There were many Aryan Germans who had German Jewish friends prior to the rise of the Nazis and who actively participated in outrages against Jews during the Nazi period.
