Does God only speak to a handful of people?
Washington Post political reporter Karen Tumulty wrote Monday about the growing use of the idea of "American exceptionalism" by political conservatives as a "battle cry from a new front in the ongoing culture wars."
Sarah Palin and many other prominent conservatives assert that "God has granted America a special role in human history." It is this belief about America's destiny that they say is "under attack" by liberals who downplay America's distinctiveness.
Are these leaders saying that America has a special relationship with God?
How do you interpret this?
I think it is about time that God intervenes to bless the American conservatives with some wisdom and humility. One wonders at the caliber of leaders who make statements that are so atrocious that they transcend absurdity. Yes, they believe they have a hotline connection to God who speaks to them regularly and seemingly fills them with lies, hate and arrogance in their mission to save America and the world from the liberals. Yes, in many ways the American conservatives remind me of the conservative Boers who packed God and the Bible and escaped the liberalism that swept Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries to set up God's country in South Africa.
They claimed to be the special emissaries of God sent to save the Black heathens, kill and subjugate them, plunder the land and its resources, enslave and dehumanize people of color and rule over everyone with God given right to commit every conceivable evil under the sun. They too committed what the world now recognizes as atrocities in the name of God.
It makes one wonder why those who believe so strongly in God think of God as vile, vicious, angry, hateful and intolerant? Why would God select a handful of people to commit atrocities against fellow humans?
This whole issue seems so absurd and outlandish that the only reason we spend time writing about it is because the hungry, sensationalist media love a controversy. One can only hope that some day it will dawn on these conservatives with a special connection to God that God is not about death and destruction but about compassion, love, respect, understanding and creation and the media will realize the wisdom of focusing on the positive rather than the negative drivel that comes out of the mouths of the ignorant and the arrogant.

How refreshing! Of course, the religious right is far too committed to blind faith, rather than reason, so they are quite unable to understand just how self contradictory their actions are to their stated beliefs.

Christians maintain that "God created man in his own image," demonstrating an amazing hubris even by today's standards.
In fact, it's precisely the other way around. Man created God in his image...and continues to do so.
