What is the miracle of Hanukkah?
You've got Hanukkah questions, On Faith has answers. Rabbi Brad Hirschfield answers your questions about the holiday:
Q) What is the miracle of Hanukkah?
The classic miracle story of Hanukkah is that of the oil which lasted longer than it should have -- eight days instead of one. Another possibility is that the miracle was that people dared to light that tiny bit of oil and trust that somehow things would work out. Perhaps the enduring miracle which Hanukkah celebrates is that there is always more light than we first imagine and that the fuel to create it is really there when look hard enough and dare to trust it's power.

The miracle of the oil lasting 8 days instead of burning out in 1, is a direct reference to scripture, where the 7 foolish virgins,(jews)did not have enough oil(spiritual faith), and ran out(did not believe), while waiting for their bridegroom.(Jesus Christ). These foolish virgins, wanted to buy oil (wait for a messiah) from those (believers) who already had their own oil(believed already that Christ was the Mesiah). The foolish virgins were told to buy their oil from a merchant, as they had enough, only, for themselves.
