Islamic terror is real, so is Islamophobia
Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, will begin holding hearings Thursday on "the extent of the radicalization of American Muslims." Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, has characterized the hearings as "a witch hunt." Are they?
King also has said he believes the "self-radicalization" of American Muslims represents "a very small minority" of the overall community. What are the potential consequences of singling out one religious group?
With Rep. Peter King beginning hearings this Thursday, hearings which will examine the issue of radicalization within the American Muslim community, two things should be stated very clearly: Islamic terror is real and so is Islamophobia. Denying the former is a deadly error, but addressing that real and pressing problem in no way necessitates or justifies the latter.
These hearings, if conducted properly, could surface both of those realities, which are rarely acknowledged in the same places and at the same time. Too often, in my own experience with both religious and communal leaders in the American Muslim community, those who are prepared to deal with the problem of Islamic terror, minimize or altogether ignore the ugliness of Islamophobia, while those who would have us focus on combating hatred of Muslims, downplay the linkage between Islam and terror in the world today.
What we need are people who have the bravery, honesty and compassion to address both at the same time. At the very least, it would be helpful if those lining up on both sides of these hearings would focus our attention on that challenge rather than simply defending King, who has said any number of outrageous things about Muslims and Islam, or suggesting that these hearings are simply an excuse for whipping up hatred against Muslims.
While it's certainly true that these hearings could become the "witch hunt" which some are concerned about. The claim that merely holding the hearings constitutes such an islamophobic hunt is inappropriate.
Raising questions, however uncomfortable, does not constitute bias against the group to whom those questions are addressed, but it does make demands upon those who raise the questions. They will have to prove that their interest lies not in showing how a particular faith community is inherently dangerous or problematic. They will have to demonstrate a willingness not only to see radicalization about which they are concerned, but also to see where it is absent and the extent to which the fight against it from inside the Muslim community has been successful.
If these hearing proceed as they should, many people whose knee-jerk reaction is to defend Islam and Muslims as a group, will find themselves uncomfortable, and so will those people who believe that to see any Muslim is to see a threat, rather than simply seeing a fellow American who happens to be Muslim. If the overly simplistic picture typically portrayed by one side or the other is simply confirmed, then Rep. King will have failed and should be held accountable for his failure.
Ultimately, if these hearings are successful, America will be safer and there will actually be greater understanding of American Muslims and a deeper appreciation of the wide range of beliefs within the American Muslim community.

For more than three years, I have blogged against Islamophobia here, indulging in name-calling as a defense against those Muslims who spout antisemitic filth.
Of late, and even of the remote past, I have not seen many (any) Muslims crying out against antisemitism, nor have I seen much hue and cry from amongst the Catholics, who spout the same bigotry. Therefore, realpolitik shall win out on this one, and I shall forgo Hillel for the moment. In other words, I'm going to sit this one out.
Peter King is a lifelong, DEVOUT ROMAN CATHOLIC, who represents a largely Roman Catholic constituency that adores him and supports him in these hearings. The rest of his constituents are Protestants and Muslims, who have always supported him and voted for him. He has lost some Muslim defenders of late, but has retained some, as well.
These hearings will not hurt his re-election. Not at all. He is adored not only by his Roman Catholic constituents, but by the RCC; indeed, the bishops bend over backwards when they see him coming.
He's their boy. I met him once. I was at a function at which he was present and allowed myself to be introduced to him. I do not like Roman Catholic arch-Conservatives, or, for that matter, most Roman Catholics, since I have found so many of them to be antisemitic. But the situation was awkward, so I permitted the introduction.
I experienced what many had claimed--both those who defend him and those who can't stand him. He was as charming and gracious as he could be when introduced to brown, Jewish, Democratic me, and did not seem taken aback by my color, religion, or politics. As a colleague who loathes him remarked to me later, "Not a bigot."
Perhaps not. Dunno. I do know this. ROMAN CATHOLIC Peter King is an issue for the ROMAN CATHOLICS (and the hundreds of millions of Protestants who support Peter King) and the Muslims.
Enough Jews, including WaPo columnists, have spoken out against these hearings. The day I see Muslims speaking out against antisemitism, I'll reconsider.
Merely a case of the chickens coming home to roost, and not even.

So all of the unrelenting questions about President Obama's birthplace, parentage, citizenship, and national loyalty are not coming from Americans specifically biased against him? From legislators and citizens who would love to hound him out of office by repeatedly asking bogus questions that they already know the answers to?
You're saying that these "uncomfortable" questions, being hurled with all the opacity of mud, are simply honest queries from reasonably curious Americans?
You can make that claim with a straight face?
