Something Stronger Than Evidence

Q:What makes the best 'case for God' to a skeptic or non-believer, an open-minded seeker, and to a person of faith and Why?

1) The message of scripture?
2) The scientific evidence for an Intelligent Designer?
3) The 'words' that God has 'spoken' - Torah, Jesus, the Qur'an?
4) A compassionate lifestyle?
5) Personal, subjective experience?

-- Karen Armstrong

If evidence were all it took to make one a believer, everyone would believe because the same evidence is available to all. Take the witnesses to Jesus' resurrection, for example. They provide the most compelling evidence that Christ was raised from the dead and, thus, distinguished Himself from every other person -- religious leader or secular leader -- who has ever walked the Earth, Every one who saw Him testified at great risk to their life and safety that what they had seen was true.

As Charles Colson has written, human nature tells you that at least one would have cracked in the face of execution or exile if it wasn't true. None did. Something stronger than evidence was at work as something stronger than evidence has worked in the hearts of every believer for the last two thousand years. It is the work of God's Spirit. Jesus said "You have not chosen me; I have chosen you." It is He who takes the evidence and does a work in our hearts, transforming those who believe into "new creations," a second birth that guarantees eternal life.

No one has ever been argued into that Kingdom. But many testify to having been loved into it by God's will.

Mr. Thomas, I know we are called to preach the gospel and teach all that Jesus commanded but on this website, all they do is blaspheme and mock our Lord. We were told do not give our pearls to those who would crush them under foot (thats a nice way of putting what Jesus said). They make a god to suit themselves "saying: My God would never send people to Hell", they're right: their actions and their total disregard for His Holiness and literally want to make Him a grandfather in the sky or a rabbit's foot in their pocket. God doesn't send anyone to Hell....They make the choice to their own destruction...Just pray for those who want God to be just like us...He's not...He's Holy, Righteous, Merciful but He's also a Just God...Nobody knows when they'll take their last breath....Repent for the kingdom of Heaven is at Hand. Those who mock Him...when they meet Him face to face...then they'll know but it will be too late.

"Take the witnesses to Jesus' resurrection, for example. They provide the most compelling evidence that Christ was raised from the dead..."

Likewise, those who saw UFOs provide compelling evidence in extraterrestrials, and those who see ghosts evidence of a spirit world.

And I suppose those who hear voices in their heads prove that God speaks to us.

Mr. Thomas, you sure put a lot of "faith" in this "history." It is in fact no more credible than the fable to which it is said to attest.

Je n'sai pas - something else, the unspoken, the unknowable, the unmaterial, you can't see if but I can. Is that the thrust of this argument. That is what I see. So ignorance breeds ignorance and they call it faith.

humbug.

When I read the "my way or the highway" intolerance, judgment and condemnation from Cal and Colson, I see evidence Satan exists, has used and still is using petty argument of God's existence to divide and conquer the world.

My everyday experiences are evidence to me the common intelligence and energy that is us all. My conception of what God is is personal and no one else's business. I refuse to believe in a small, shallow, homophobic and racist god who fries his babies in hell if they don't do what his thugs like Cal and Colson tell them to do.

There are a couple of places that I find myself in agreement with Mr. Thomas, which is a new experience. The main ones are that evidence, or proof of the existence of God, is not the compelling factor in making the believer. Gratefully, as there is little that is compelling and none that is irrefutable. And secondarily the experience of connection to God usually resides in the heart, not the head.

Most of this, as usual, is written as a witness to Evangelical Christianity as the premier form of belief, though in a somewhat less annoying way than is his normal way. The use of the example of witnesses to the Resurrection of Jesus is no more compelling than any other story making connected to God belief, though it is doubtless crucial and of utter importance to those that believe that faith. And that may be the point. Yet, the suggestion that all who saw Jesus Risen testified to it, that the story came undiluted through centuries of church mythmaking, that those were subjected to torture and did not adjust their story to the tastes of the torturers, (as we know to be "human nature", under torture, to say whatever stops the pain, true or no).

"No one has ever been argued into that Kingdom. But many testify to having been loved into it by God's will."

Lord knows, Mr. Thomas does not know this bit. As we have no clear "evidence" of a Kingdom at all, and certainly no 'eyewitness accounts' of it, much less a list of accepted 'members'.

I do however believe in the sense of a reaffirmed life, particularly for seekers that discover the communion that they have been looking for beyond their physical life, in a realized spiritual connection. This is the Christians state of being "born again", and it is much like that.

I look forward to when diverse faiths can allow and acknowledge the commonality of all humans in their spiritual heritage, and let go of the belief that it only comes through exclusive channels. A native american sitting in a circle in vision quest has as much access and ability to connect to the spirit of the Divine as a worshiper in Baptist congregation in the rapture of Sunday Service.

Indeed, I would wager, (wagering is unspiritual?, Damn!), on the vision quest seeker, for the advantage in realizing this goal.
