Thank goodness for Christopher Hitchens!
Could it be that some of the Catholics praying for Christopher Hitchens have heard about the Harvard study of prayer and are hoping to provide some further evidence of its one surprising result? In the 2006 study organized by Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School, the only large-scale and well-controlled scientific examination of the efficaciousness of prayers for hospital patients, there were no statistically significant effects--except for a small negative effect, in which people who knew they were being prayed for did, on average, somewhat worse than the others! So praying for Hitch might be counterproductive. Why might this curious effect exist?
Sports fans and opera buffs know that their sheer presence in the audience, swelling the number of those paying attention, has an effect on the performers--so long as the performers know they are there. Enthusiastic applause boosts moral--and usually that in turn boosts performance, but occasionally, it can lead to "choking" (almost literally in the case of opera singers). People can be unnerved by too much attention, too many anxious people trying to beam too much goodwill by the sheer force of their eagerness. But I suspect that if careful studies have been done of fan "prayer" --they may have, but if so, I don't know them--the net average effect will have been shown to be positive: when people are "rooting for you," you do better. Certainly that is what athletes and opera singers believe; they love a large following. And I'm happy to assume that this is what Catholics believe as well.
When I was in a similar medical crisis four years ago, I wrote a piece ["Thank Goodness!"] about my gratitude to the doctors (not to God) for saving my life, and said I was forgiving those friends of mine who had the courage to tell me that they were praying for me. I resisted the temptation to respond "Thanks, I appreciate it, but did you also sacrifice a goat?" I acknowledged the goodwill but wanted to point out a problem raised by the Benson study:
Anybody whose practice shrugs off that research is subtly undermining respect for the very goodness I am thanking. If you insist on keeping the myth of the effectiveness of prayer alive, you owe the rest of us a justification in the face of the evidence. Pending such a justification, I will excuse you for indulging in your tradition; I know how comforting tradition can be. But I want you to recognize that what you are doing is morally problematic at best. If you would even consider filing a malpractice suit against a doctor who made a mistake in treating you, or suing a pharmaceutical company that didn't conduct all the proper control tests before selling you a drug that harmed you, you must acknowledge your tacit appreciation of the high standards of rational inquiry to which the medical world holds itself, and yet you continue to indulge in a practice for which there is no known rational justification at all, and take yourself to be actually making a contribution.
Those of us rooting for Christopher Hitchens in his contest with cancer are an open-minded multitude; we wish him the best, not just because we appreciate his great contributions in the past and his talent for giving delight, but because we need him for our future endeavors. He is a most valuable player. And we welcome the prayers of those on the other side of the field as a generous-spirited gesture rather like applauding the injured player on the other team. It is also, of course, a sincere indication that Hitch has not yet persuaded them of the futility of what they do. Fair enough. Stay tuned.

One exasperating aspect of reading or watching the atheists' arguments is that they are so linear, cognitive and left brained. If we were wholly left brained beings, this would make sense but we are not. There is an emotional aspect to us as well as a strong sense of intuition. When we are seriously ill, we do not respond solely with our intellects. We respond with our entire beings.
I also was treated for cancer three years ago. I was and am no member of organized religion. I put on my hospital admission form for religion "none". However, if anyone had asked me if this meant I had no religion, I would have said no.
Being ill is a spiritual experience. It will engage every aspect of you. I remember one day going from test to test in the hospital and feeling as if I had entered the Jungian stream of the collective unconscious. Another morning, I woke just before the hospital came alive and watched the cars come down the valley in the winter dark just before dawn. It was a very Impressionistic moment and I felt very close to the spark of creativity and beginning.
I did NOT sit around and debate religious beliefs either externally or internally while being treated for cancer. If these were the last moments of my life, I would not have chosen to spend them discussing whether the atheists or theists were correct in their positions. I said to myself, "I don't know so let's move on to experiencing what is left to experience about this world."
Finally, I experienced well wishers of varied beliefs. My best friend since childhood lit candles for me in her Catholic Church. I appreciated them. I could picture her doing so and I remembered our childhood together and the frequent times we saw them lit together. This was a positive recollection even though I personally had given up on the Church decades before.
Instead of intellectualizing the dying process, try claiming at least a moment of time in which you let other aspects of yourself come to the fore. It is a terribly limiting experience, perhaps your last, to debate this issue instead of opening yourselves up. I would hope that my final act might be making one last painting or other art work just before dying. That at the very least would fully engage me on every level.
As for wishing people dead for expressing their viewpoints as a writer, as some have done here, that is just plain asinine. We are a First Amendment people. You either believe in freedom of expression or you don't. There is no inbetween.

Dear Mr. Hitchens, I wish you peace during this challenging time. I have enjoyed your reflections on life and such since you were diagnosed with cancer. To be honest I found you frustrating in the past. But I have enjoyed your thoughtful side. I wish you peace.

If five rambling, inane posts in an hour and a half don't get you blocked for being a spamming troll, what does? I guess the username WOODSTOCK-41 explains it all. Your brain being full of holes is no excuse to post garbage. I think there is a building with padded rooms and brightly-colored pills with a reservation in your name.

Christopher Hitchens was a cheerleader for the war in Iraq which has killed thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. While I would not wish cancer on anyone I wish Christopher Hitchens had been given a rifle and helmet and dropped into Iraq in 2005. Would he still be a war cheerleader?
In the end Hitchens will die a lot more peacefully than thousands of GI's and Iraqis.

As someone who shares Hitchen's skepticism and nearing death (from old age, if nothing else) I need companionship and respect for knowing my own mind, not a critic, not a mother full of advice, not a priest, not a co-navigator, a collaborator comfortable with my views and values. I am sad because I know there may not be anyone out there like this and because I cannot take revenge on those who would impress me with their views as I lay helpless.
