(That's why Christians go with those veils, anyway, expectation someone'll pop the ol' malocchio, all power of Christianity notwithstanding, etc) Doesn't change the rights issues in civil society, nor the role of clergy in many faiths in actually advising prospective couples before they commit themselves to oaths before the Gods.

In reality, though, yes, I could 'discriminate' for any reason: as clergy it's my duty to advise a couple as best I can, and if necessary, refuse to participate. It's different in Paganism, where people's oaths are their own, but, there's still an element where I'm not gonna have a bad match swear eternal love to the Moon when I know they ain't there yet.

If people claim *government* discrimination is based on Churches, what stands to happen is that churches and clergy *actually lose* the ability to be clergy, cause they set up the stakes where, if church can tell people who can be married anywhere, State might start determining who can be married anywhere in a way they don't like.

This is not because the state will recognize marriages solemnized by other religions, even if they're same-sex ones.

But because churches tried to mix the two, ...basically to try and claim state power for their particular religious biases.
