Shameless and thoughtless

Q: Was the Utah attorney general wrong to use Twitter, or religious language, to describe an execution? With all our technology, are we losing sight of our humanity? Should matters of life and death be reduced to a tweet?

Tweet: Shurtleff: His tweeting shameless, foolish, thoughtless.

An execution is not a sporting event. It is not a sighting of Lindsay Lohan at the local Barney's. This behavior is bluntly, shockingly thoughtless.

Our society has chased away silence. There is no refuge - not in cars, not in stores; the chatter of blackberrys and IPODS trails us throughout the day. But surely there is a place for silence. When a man is being executed; when he has himself taken life - when such an awesome event is occurring, the one who would speak trivializes words, and himself. A fly, as the Spanish proverb reminds us, does not enter a closed mouth.

If one must speak, then let it be the fruit of reflection. There are beautiful and moving works that have been written by the eyewitnesses of horrible events. Anyone who has read the letters of soldiers in the civil war, or World War I, cannot doubt that meaning can be rested from horror. A tweet is the opposite of reflection. It is the belief that the passing thought is the crucial datum; that consideration, reflection and repose have no place. One's first thought is one's final word. That is foolish enough when the event is confrontation with a human being, a work of art or an event of significance. When it is a tragedy, such an assumption is virtually blasphemous.

Tweeting an execution? From a state official? What have we come to?
