The Economics of Sin and Virtue
Money lies closer to people's souls than they like to admit. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. destroyed other men's fortunes as he ruthlessly built his own, but he assuaged his conscience by believing that God gave him every penny. Call it the Protestant work ethic gone berserk or hypocritical denial, the mechanism works. We manipulate our image of God to justify how the world is treating us. This is very far from Christ's essential teaching that God abides in a higher world, but he left enough room for Christianity to believe that sin is punished by depriving the sinner of money while virtue is rewarded with a full bank account. Actually, Jesus went out of his way to warn his followers, in the Sermon on the Mount, not to store up riches on earth but in Heaven. The message has largely been ignored.
The great change today is that people expect sin to bring the greatest rewards. Who doesn't feel at least a slight pang of envy to learn that Yasser Arafat, while ostensibly acting as a freedom fighter, secretly amassed billions in Swiss bank accounts, a pattern followed successfully by Saddam Hussein and the Iranian mullahs? The pious can point out that neither Arafat nor Saddam lived to profit from their stashed billions, but plenty of Mafia bosses died in bed after a lifetime of ill-gotten gains. Lest we limit this to the nefarious, almost every congressman expects to raise millions in re-election funds and earmarks once elected. This money may not go directly into their pockets -- an open question these days -- but they feel virtuous taking it.
On Wall Street we are told that the current domino effect of collapsing firms is the result of unbridled greed, a Christian sin, but not sinning meant a lower paycheck, if not getting fired. Traders are expected to maximize returns for their clients. The real problem was irresponsibility, lack of repercussions, and speed. Traders could move millions of dollars with the push of a button, no one cared if the institution they worked for was being pushed to extremes of risk, and now that Lehman Brothers has collapsed, the executives who skimmed millions off the top in bonuses will walk away whistling. At least they weren't as bad as Enron. In this climate, it's not how much you sinned but how much you took away before the bubble burst. None of this behavior reflects on God, however, or sin for that matter. As in Abu Ghraib, a climate of wrongdoing was created, morality became numb, and peer pressure did the rest.
We are divided about money because we are divided in ourselves. We hate Exxon for exploiting the general population as oil prices soar, but given the means, we'd buy their stock. The urge to covet wealth is shadowed by a rage that would tear the rich down. In India I was taught as a child that the deciding factor is Karma. Earn your money by good and virtuous means if you want your life to be good and virtuous. This is a reformulation of the biblical "as you sow, so shall you reap." In our fantasies we hope that bad people suffer for their bad money, but the law of Karma -- or Jesus's sowing and reaping -- doesn't work that simply. To be honest, I have no confirmed idea how good is finally balanced with bad, or how karmic repercussions are timed. So I prefer to stick with what my mother told me and try to keep my gains as well-gotten as I can.

I've learned that in each era of economic growth we become more efficient and democratic in the distribution of wealth. In each era we move closer to the ideals of what John Nash said, that you gain wealth not by doing good for yourself, but for doing good for other. As described by Marx, with the era's economic collapse, the ruling class is crippled, and the ceremonial scepter is passed to the created management class.
Last Friday was a wonderful day in that the Investor class, which number the tens of thousands, have been replaced by the Trader class, which number in the hundreds of thousands - if not millions. We are but a generation away from not only the singularity, but complete market democratization (communism in the purest form) in the United States. The next step would be to acknowledge these virtues as a collective and spread peace and wealth through out the world.

Somebody has rightly said : "There is enough in this world for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed".
Allowing more and more articles of human consumption to be traded like a company's shares has opened up new avenues for people to fulfill their greed by gambling in these articles. Today, one can trade in currencies, a large number of (essential) commodities, metals, interest rates etc. This is nothing but the promotion of legal gambling in the new civilized (?) or globalized world.
'Greed' is a profound human instinct. Today's world is providing a vast new fertile land where people can try their luck and get addicted to cultivating their greed for maximum monetary benefit.
'Morality' has become a relative and old-fashioned (in fact, obsolete) virtue and everyone has his/her own definition, interpretation, standards and ideas about this term (morality) as per the person's own convenience.
I think the present trend will continue unabated with some so called 'structural modifications' which might provide even greater and wider opportunities to humankind to stretch as well as manipulate their greed.
MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF US.

You know Deepak… the greedy get their karmatic counter balance in their stress and worry…. They get their reward for greed in the idea of it being taken away.. or the loss of it…. On the way that they look over their shoulder or the way they don’t feel safe alone….. their greed comes back to them in the way that they have no understanding of “trust”…. In them selves or others…. There are always enemies around who want to take for them… or the friends that they have only want to use them for their money….. they may be able to buy safes for their money…. Locks and security systems for their homes….. even body guards.. pre nuptial agreements for their “loved” ones…. But no amount of money can buy trust, peace of mind, sincerity…. So let them have their plunder, their spoils from their wars waged….. those people die in their dreams every night…. And they always see claws and teeth on the faces of all they meet…. Their greed will leave their heart black, hollow and alone…. And in the end Deepak, they can not take their gold with them…. Only their memories, their nightmares…..

Perhaps Deepak should explain the morality of charging $3000 for a week long "purification" program, of unproven value, as he did. Or marketing seminars, books and herbal products of like value, usually at upscale prices. Or charging $25,000 for most of his lecture programs. Better yet, the fees he charges to see patients "but not as a doctor" because he has no license to practice medicine.

Use of words like "greed," "immorality," and "sin," in describing our current economic crisis suggests a lack of insight into the piety of modern day capitalists. The architects of Wall Street's latest collapse are true believers, not reprobate sinners. Years ago, Max Weber pointed to the unholy, atheistical offspring of the marriage of Capitalism and Calvinism; a God-less religion of prosperity. Add a little of Darwinian natural selection and a privileged class of homo sapiens evolves whose privileges exist in their wills to take them. Some refer to today's version as neoconservatives, but there is nothing new or conservative about the religion of prosperity or the will to power. To paraphrase one of the scion families of privilege, "We see the world as it could be (ours to own) and ask, 'Why not?'" This is why the "haves" accept no criticism for our economic woes and can suggest without a trace of shame that their privileges be sustained by extra taxes on the "have-nots." And, the "Legions" (The Executive Branch, Congress, red and blue alike) who share their belief in the false-religion of prosperity will roll over and freely offer themselves to sustain the wealthy few.

You should draw a greater distinction between gambling to garner more riches and gambling for survival. You assume that all 'Wall Street' traders are reckless 'gamblers' (sinners) rather than 'investors' (righteous captialists). This bubble bust is hurting some 'investors' unfairly. They were the ones planning for a retirement that will provide them the basic necessities when they can no longer earn money.
Gambling used to be outlawed because it was a sin to take money from the disadvantaged. Nowadays, gambling is legalized and encouraged by local governments in order to get revenue to underwrite the cost of providing basic services such as education, health care, old age benefits, highways, etc for the general population.
Wouldn't Wall Street gambling become more virtuous if it would improve the general good? In other words, why not just tax investments and traders' profits and put the money into the general revenues. Some in the Congress advocated this years ago but the Wall Street bankers successfully lobbied against it. Maybe it's time to rethink it.

I am a meditation teacher with The Chopra Center and I was struck by some of the comments about Chopra. I have read some of his books, but not all. I have met him briefly a couple of times. My experience of him has been of a man willing to share some of his perceptions from his own life with other people. I have never felt as though he were trying to present himself as the "next new guru" or leader. I have found some of his perceptions helpful as I live my own life and try to "make sense of it all".
Coincidentally enough, my son and I were discussing this morning, before I saw the Chopra article, what comments or advice we would offer about life to other people that we learned from our own lives. My thoughts were (and I am 58)that my intention in decisions is very important. I find when I weigh my decisions as to whether they feel right and how they may affect other people as well as myself, things go better - there seems to be an orderliness to how my life progresses. I think the essence of this intention idea (the big thought) is really, will my actions and decisions bring more "goodness" to life or will they create more confusion and suffering? That seems to be the crucial point and is very important in how things finally play out. Obviously, what has been going on on Wall Street in the last few years, has nothing to do with goodness.

I am disappointed with Chopra's piece - he attributes the highest good to Christ but even then says , 'he left enough room...' as if the inspiration behind Christianity was a carefully calculated Wall Street derivative.
And yes, some of us (I would say many of us) are not in the least envious of people who amassed ill-gotten wealth.

Mr. Chopra,
I must admit that although I have purchased a book of yours and although I have seen your writings over the years, never did I read much of them because of my own prejudice stemming from my so-called American Christian upbringing -- that is, one that regarded anything Indian, Middle Eastern or otherwise as something to be shunned in the way that Abraham should have shunned Hagar, I'm supposing. Of course, such an idea is ridiculous when considering that God is the Author and Finisher or our faith. Now, after reading these thoughts which responsibly depict universal laws otherwise known as karma or sowing and reaping, I find an appreciation for the ways you have exposed the truth. To be fair, I have read Krishnamurti's "Think on These Things," and I found the whole process of his reasoning quite delightful. Not that you will have been offended by my former prejudice, but please accept my apology for presuming you were a part of some forbidden mysticism that would somehow muddle my thinking. On the contrary, I have found this short article worthwhile, mainly with how you expose falsehoods and through your use of comparison and contrast with the information I have come to know as truth.

It seems to me the robber barrons of Wall Street have not caught on to the idea of karma, which implies an inevitable cause and effect relationship based on an attachment to action - whether of the 'good' or 'bad' kind is immaterial.
To paraphrase Gandhi, all the happiness in the world is the result of doing for others, while all the misery is a result of doing for oneself.
How could anyone find fault with this profound insight - a recap of fundamental Buddhist doctrine coming from perhaps the world's most famous Hindu.
Another version of the Golden Rule which few men follow, and still fewer on Wall Street. Instead, they gambled with the financial fate of a nation to appease their own greed - and because they could.
For the ordinary man not pursuing the path to Enlightenment, one has to ask, 'how much is enough'? While a state of enlightenment is said to engender eternal compassion for all sentient life, how does the average man aquire this rare quality?
When has one made a sufficient fortune to finally turn one's attentions to the needs of others?
The Wall Street wizards strike me as primitive men (yes indeed, they seem to be overwhelmingly of that gender).
They don't get the fact that like us, they're really walking dead men - and need to act accordingly as quickly as possible to neutralize all the karma engendered by a lifetime of ego-laden self-centered pursuits.
I suppose they give a few bucks to charity to in an effort to suppress the occasional twinge of guilt. That's not going to cut it however...as they're still attached to their actions. Maybe they're church-goers... they attend the Presbyterian or Episcopalian cathedral located near their palatial estates.
No, these folks act like they're going to live forever to eventually enjoy their plunder in all it's fullness. But suddenly, the unexpected end arrives. Is it ever really a surprise?
Only a fool fails to anticipate their own demise.

Oh, for God's sake!
Does anyone else find the pious ramblings of this exploitative multi-millionare to be cringingly distasteful?
Perhaps he feels that "slight pang of envy to learn that Yasser Arafat, while ostensibly acting as a freedom fighter, secretly amassed billions in Swiss bank accounts," but I feel merely disgust.
The lessons that someone attempted to teach him when he was a child in India -- "earn your money by good and virtuous means if you want your life to be good and virtuous" -- were apparently lost on him. How else can we account for his obsessive pursuit of money and empire through the hawking of pseudo-Ayurvedic products, retreats, and medical advice?
The utterly mindless yammerings in his books -- Ayurveda Extra-Lite -- are a slap in the face to Indian culture and its thousands of years of medical practices.
So, when he says "I prefer to stick with what my mother told me and try to keep my gains as well-gotten as I can," one can only wonder at the sheer arrogance of such an assertion in the presence of evidence that it is a bold-faced lie.
Again, I ask: What are Chopra's religious or spiritual qualifications to merit a place in WaPo's faith dialogue? He's a SALESMAN, folks, not a credentialed moralist, thinker, or healer.

Dear Deepak,
The catch is in the last part of your note - "....try to keep my gains as well-gotten as I can"
There is no shortage of people who take that a bit ahead and say that I couldn't help it...I tried as much as I could...but beyond that my gain got ill-gotten and I still decided to keep it. Did it make a difference?
I am as puzzled as you about how "...how good is finally balanced with bad, or how karmic repercussions are timed." and much more so as I bide my time in the land of karma.
Nowhere else could it be so difficult to monitor and look for empirical evidence about whether bad karma leads to bad fruits as in India.
All around I see dyed in the wool believers of Krishna go about in a frenzy of karma, which I find myself disagreeing with but which the believers manage to convince me is as a result of the teachings of the One - sam, dham, dand, bhedh. I wonder whether the One meant it to be means to protect dharma or to achieve any end which one sought fit for ones interests.
The land of Karma is in a disarray and at times I feel Krishna personally supervises it.

In response to Dr. Chopra's essay on "The Economics of Faith and Virtue:" Our founding fathers were intent to create a nation based on the ideas of the world's greatest western philosophers, thinkers, and theologians. They also were, by and large, steeped in the Christian Faith. Today, we have a different challenge. How can a nation conduct itself with the highest principles of many religious traditions? It seems to me that we must be ultimately faced with the fact of our own transgressions, and the wisdom accrued from our genuine acknowledged need for individual renewal that will be the basis for the deep genuine change that is to occur, and is occurring to many as we "walk the talk." If politics is used principally as a way to maneuver and manipulate others through cohesion and deceit, then we are still operating from a place of ignorance and we will continue to proliferate confusion and lack or principles. We cannot pretend anymore to be virtuous; either we act with integrity or our nation will be lost to itself. My own experience tells me that if I do not give myself several minutes a day for "time out" to re-orient myself to my Source, then I am more susceptible to the whims and transient nature of the political and economical arena surrounding me daily. In my opinion, our connection with a "power greater than ourselves" is crucial to our country's mental and physical health, it's economic institutions, and its ability to interact with world leaders to promote life supporting agendas.

"Karma" is action. What Deepak did not point out is that according to Hindu scriptures and other sources of knowledge, *attachmnent/abhorrence* to the end result of "karma" is what causes the pain, exultation in our mortal lives.
That is, we hate bad outcomes and hail/rejoice the good ones. Our minds thus want to those actions which are beneficial to us; of course, we avoid those which can cause us grief. Of course we are pained and dumbfounded when despite our best efforts we end up with grief for an action that we thought would bring happiness. Similarly we are overjoyed when we get something unexpectedly benign, good when we were pessimistic with an action to being with. This is defined as *attachment/detachment*. Our sorrows, pleasures are all the result of this mentality. If we can control/overcome this mentality, we would not feel the sorrows/joys. This would probably turn humans into stoics.
Buddhist philosophy has borrowed identical views from the Hindu scriptures. The famous gospel of Lord Buddha was to that sobbing mother who wanted Buddha to raise her son from the dead. Buddha told her that he would do so if she could find any family where grief in the form of death or other misfortune has never struck them. The woman went away in search of such a family; she returned back and confessed that she could not find any such family. Then Lord Buddha explained that she was thus sobbing needlessly. She should consider the passing of her son as an act of time, and move on. The mother, after performing the formal rites of her son, embraced Buddhism. (I have found the message of Jesus Christ having the same deeper import, but Christian conservatives - such as the late Pope John Paul II - would never agree that Christ's message resonated with the Buddhist teachings.)
The "fruits of karma" (*karmaphal*) means payback according to one's attachment to such actions. Of course people from the Abrahamic faiths confuse between "karma" and "karmaphal" (fruits of actions).

KARMA is nice word to list, but if you see Hindus in India you will not find majority of them do not own good Karma. You will develop good Karma when you have good Ideology of faith. If you believe in wrong and fake god then you will have bad Karma. Karma had to be described properly, it should be acceptable to the globally not for the particular society, area, culture, or country, or environment. Such type of Karma is from the original GOD. In Indian Society or among Hindus, they did not follow one God, in one house you will find each member follow different god in order to have benefit because HINDUS RELIGION IS LINKED WITH BENEFIT BUT NOT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTER,SOCEITY.

But, in Christianity the follower believes that for his SINS CHRIST DIED. If any person believes this means he is encouraged for the SINS and can do any wrong against humanity. Also the same case in HINDUISM, the followers are believing on a fake FAKE GOD,(Imaginery) the picture cannot be a real one and still has a firm belief on fake God. These Hindus worships only for money irrespective of legal or illegal does not matter for them. Almost all Hindus worship for only bettermen but not for their charater development. You will find the same case in respect of JEWISH RELIGION, Jews has firm belief that they are one all Jews will go to the heaven irrespective good and bad. The original version of that song may not make the "family value" playlist, but the radio version of that song is much tamer. Still, the tamer version talks about pimps and sex. Look it up.
If you're not familiar with the song, the cleaned up version is here:
There are two points as to why The Brody File felt compelled to run this video.
First of all, Obama is making a concerted effort to reach out to faith voters, especially Evangelicals. But if you're going to allow your three year old daughter to listen to a song like that (no matter if she doesn't understand the lyrics) I think that will give faith voters pause. Forget faith voters. It may give others pause too. Secondly, Obama has associations with popular rap artists and has made it clear that he does like some rap music, but has issues with the lyrics. Obama has been outspoken about how rap artists need to clean up their act and he's been very public about how these lyrics are offensive. But he has also said that he is for freedom of speech and that parents must take the lead and control what their children listen to and watch on TV.
Read a clip from The Brody File vault where he talks about this very subject. Watch him talk about demeaning lyrics in an interview I did in Detroit.
So two questions: Is he turning off potential voters in the heartland by aligning himself with some of these artist? And is it somewhat hypocritical for Obama to criticize these rap artists and yet listen to the music?
Obama is going to have to walk a fine balancing act. It's one that many African Americans have had to do for sometime - living in two different worlds -- because he doesn't want to alienate his supporters in Urban America, yet he doesn't want to turn off those who may not understand this connection. This election is forcing the nation to deal with some hard, unpleasant realities and issues that are not going to go away.
Plus, the reality is that quite a few of the songs that are played on the radio today - be it country, hip-hop, top 40 have questionable lyrics. As a parent, it's hard decipher, in many cases, what's good from what's bad because so much of it is coded.

Please tell us how you have made yo money Mr. Chopra? Please tell us about the false religion you follow and the belief in Karma which excludes Jesus Christ as the Savior?
How can you or anyone that follows you like Oprah and Barbra Streistand, talk about greed when you live the lives of greedy people?
False religion in self is just as destructive as any greed. Perhaps you need to take a look inside yourself before talking of greed as if you live the life of a monk!
What you are selling is lies. What a shame for those who actually believe you!

Business is rough. Men who are good and virtuous all of the time are likely to be brought to ruin by those who are not. You have to do what you have to do to survive and you can't always be easy going. There are a lot of people out there worse than I am and I've met a number of them. It's for better or worse and it's not always a happy life. You find your pleasures where you can, so you need to mix business with pleasure to avoid ruin. You can't sleep much either. Sleeping costs time and time is money. You almost need to be a machine to make it in business today. It's kill or be killed, it's brutal out there and getting more brutal. The market looked better today, which is a plus. The night brings more work, so it never ends.

Karma is the name of the gap between ferry and wharf. (a wise friend remarked)
thanks for some interesting thoughts chopra
what if we all eventually come to a place where we collectively realise that, in a world where there is enough, money doesn't make sense ?
And having got there by different paths -
we start a war over what to name the new place.

oil and tears
the whole world will change
every day a new landscape
each night a new dream
in the bare desert
the wind will shift a huge dune
one grain at a time

Karma is nothing more than experiencing the consequences of your actions, though the period between action and consequence can be long.
Unfortunately, we have become a nation of village idiots, so we are now experiencing the consequences of voting incompetent and corrupt Republicans into power for the last 8 years, god help us all.
But Bush, his wall street cronies, and this mafioso administration will get what's coming to them eventually. It's karmic law.

I don't believe in Karma. To me its become a dirty word. Too often I hear some one do somthing good just because they think its good returns on them. "its good Karma" they'll say as if its some universal spiritual credit system. Like someones keeping score. I believe in ends, consequence and self accountability for the choices one makes. I dont believe someone who would get their money or fortune through corrupt ways would necesarily get whats coming to them. I dont think its that simple or cut and dry. I think theres alot of people that get away with things at the cost of others I think their "means" justify their "end". Theres no trick to making alot of money if all you care about, is to make alot of money. That being said, nothing is free. Everything costs somthing.

I'll note that I've heard all manner of vile things from folks who don't approve of non-Christian religion, but the below-quted is about the most petty, disgusting, and horrid little coward's statement I've yet mischanced to hear, here.
I'm not big on the word, but.
Shame.
