Obama Used the Word Muslims Want to Hear - Respect

When President Obama offered to reach out to the Muslim world for the mutual interest of both parties, he was saying nothing new. The West and the Arab oil-producing nations have teetered on an uneasy alliance for decades, the one depending on the other. As much as we grumble about being dependent on Arab oil, it serves our mutual interest to keep a steady flow of fuel coming our way and a glut of dollars in return. But when he added "mutual respect," Obama supplied a key missing piece, one that Muslims have longed for.

No doubt it's because of his diverse background -- and in no small part because he had to forge an identity in the black community -- that Obama knows what respect means to outcasts and the down-trodden. In a way, it's everything. The Muslim world, despite its windfall oil profits, feels like one of the great losers in the march of history. Muslims dwell on the glory days of Sunni culture, which kept science, mathematics, and philosophy alive while that knowledge was lost in Europe during the Middle Ages. The Ottoman Empire once embraced almost the entire Mediterranean basin and marched to the gates of Vienna. When World War I left Islamic power in ashes, a decline in confidence set in that has been deeply corrosive to Muslim identity and deeply humiliating, too.

One can look at the present situation, rife with extremism, terrorist upheavals, and strife over Israel, and conclude that the Muslim world is a dark place, a drag on the march of modernity. But portraying Islam in this way, however realistic it might look on the ground, ignores the critical need of any downtrodden, despised people, which is for respect. Respect is an invitation to equality, even if that equality has not yet been earned. The jihadis of al-Qaeda find their deepest grievance in the occupation of Saudi Arabia, the holy land, by infidels -- it is a mark, in their eyes, of the deepest disrespect. Steady, ignominious insults from the West have been a constant strain in the Muslim psyche for as long as anyone can remember.

This knot of bitterness, shame, resentment, grief, and rage will take a very long time to untangle. It's not for us in the West to think we can do the work that Muslims must do for themselves. But Obama spoke the right words, in the right spirit. Muslims may seem too eager to seize on his middle name, but Hussein is more than a symbol. It's a crack in the wall that has kept Islam apart for so long. It's early in the game, of course. So far, no practical steps have been taken to bring the Arab world out of its intractable repudiation of reason on many fronts. But as Obama asserted in his campaign when he was dismissed for being "just words," words count almost more than anything else.

Mr. Chopra should be commended for recognizing the role of Respect in human relations. And for that matter, President Obama should be commended for seeking a new chapter in America's relations with the Muslim world, based on mutual interest and respect. The words President Obama neglected to acknowledge, and that Muslims would also like to hear, are "mutual values."

As an Abrahamic faith, Islam's values are largely consistent with many of the Judeo-Christian traditions. And although the president and Mr. Chopra are aware of this, unfortunately many of the American people are not. As the president moves forward in his initiative to improve US relations with the Muslim world, I hope that he will recognize the many values that are shared between these great civilizations.

The whole probelm with Islam is that it is based on a pretty dumb philosophy--division against man and man, division against believers and infidels, division between man and woman, between Dur-Ul-Islam and Dur something and God knows what else. The religion is extremely prone to violence. Their practices are barbaric like performing halal on animals, Sharia punishments like cutting off limbs and stoning adulterers and other criminals to death etc. Islam supports a culture of violence. Passages in the Koran insulting Jews and others who don't subscribe to the Islamic faith are an affront to humanity. It is not surprising that Muslims are violently predisposed against infidels. Then they say it is the word of God. Ridiculous! Who needs such a God?

Islam has 1.3 billion followers worldwide. Many of the countries in which they live as a majority are oil rich nations. Indonesia and Malaysia are not exactly poor.

Saudi Arabia is a rich country. It has oil. It pays handsomely for any service it accepts from any Western country.

The Persians lost their Empire.

The Romans lost their Empire.

The British lost their Empires.

The Dutch, the Spanish, the Portuguese and French all lost their colonies.

The Iranians, the Italians, the British, the Dutch, the Spanish, the Portuguese and the French are all insecure as a result. They all dwell on the glory days and the losses have dealt a terrible blow to their identity. They all live in deep shame and humiliation and want their glory days back to regain their self respect. They are rife with extremism and terrorism in an effort to regain their respect with the rest of the world.

Sounds nonsensical, doesn't it?

Mr. Chopra,

Please stop justifying terrorism. The problem is NOT humiliation, disrespect, powerlessness, occupation etc... of the "Muslim world". The "Hindu world" has been treated the same way at times. They did not react with such extreme violence. The reason is that a religion which is comfortable with violence will be violent. If you cut the head of a lamb slowly while chanting koranic verses to celebrate Eid, your children get the message loud and clear.

A few facts:
Saudia Arabia is not occupied. Saudi wealth and power is due to the help and development by Americans and British. The oil production and infrastructure and many cities were built by companies such as Bechtel. You're welcome, 9/11 Saudis.

Half the population of Saudi Arabia is disrespected and humiliated (women), and nonmuslim immigrants to Islamic countries are treated very poorly. Can't blame the West for that.

RESPECT HAS TO BE MUTUAL AND SINCERE. That is not a difficult concept. You cannot say "respect my religion as equal" and then say "my religion and god is better than yours" in the same sentence. Abrahamic religions can never be mutually respectful of others - you know that, Mr. Chopra.

Asslamo alaikum...

i read the comments of friends over here and i feel one thing that mostly over here people did not have the right and true understanding of Islam or any other religion, some said that "Islam encourage or motivate violence" .. i think i did not agree with this statement, who think like this did not have the information of History, like Hitler was not Muslim who killed millions of People, Americans are not muslims who are killed thousands of people in Iraq and Afghanistan and still killing on name of false self fabricated war of Terror.. and see the Gaza conditions , Israel is also not muslim country who butchering the innocent people .. here in muslim world we did not say that chiristian or Jewish religion motivate their followers to attack on countries and kill them.. so we should not link violence with religion.. and we should not generalize ..

One of my friend said that Islamic world feels insecure.. .. which also little untrue, we have no phobia like west hss in these days who always make fools their common people on name of muslim terrorist and fandamentalist that they are planning to kill them.. or they are threat to world peace.. western world feels insecurity and phobia in their common people who did know the real stories .. and i shall say that this is the luck of western world that currently in all muslim world we have no true leadership otherwise condition will be not like this.. Israel will not dare to attack the innocent.. but for how long ...

Respect and Peace .. human rights blah blah is nothing just propuganda of west.. Obama is also part of that game .. and here for us this is just face of change nothing else and respect comes from realities and trust and we have lack of trust and Obama did not know accept the realities which is very harsh .. so lets hope for the best .. for the dying monster...

Regards

Perhaps Mr. Chopra should go into one of the 57 Islamic nations and practise his New Age philisophy and see what the Muslims will do to him.

Respect goes both ways. Islamic religious leader (and not just the fringe ones) refer to Jews and Christians as the "sons of pigs and monkeys", so I get the feeling that they don't respect me very much. We don't respect them because they haven't done much to deserve our respect. Stop the "honor killings" or your daughters and I will respect you. Start teaching science and mathematics in your schools instead of Jihad and martyrdom and we will respect you.

The Islamic world is insecure because it realizes it is a complete disaster. However, they need to stop blaming us for their problems, and they need to stop obsessing about the 1% of the land in the middle east not run by Muslims. Israel isn't the cause of your problems, you are.

I would not want to be in a religion that commands violence and murder. There is NO freedom and democracy in Islam countries like Indonesia. Why Christians are being chased matyred in Indonesia? If this is whereAmerica is heading, I think we are going down and I feel sorry for this country that was once a powerful country. If America goes against Israel, America itself will face defeat because God Himself will intervene.

This is the biggest bunch of crap from the Obamanation. He denies any Muslim background during the campaign and now he's trying to show that he does have a Muslim background. His speech sounded like the US was reponsible for all the Muslims problems. How about an apology form the Muslims about their radical members, how about 9/11
It seems that somehow Muslims are immune from criticism. Im not proud that he is our president

I come from a Muslim country. I know Islam. I know Muslims. The one and only source of Muslim discontent with the US is Israel. It's not lack of respect, or anything that the US did. Stop blaming the US or the victims for acts committed by religious fanatics. Most Muslims are just like everybody else. BUT the important distinction is that unlike every other religion today, Islam has enforcement and punishment so it's true that it's fascism couched in religion. It's a power play and apologists like Chopra just don't get it.

I wonder if Mr. Chopra was in Mumbai at the time when the religion of peace activists marched in on Nov. 26th, 2008, would they have left him in peace for his respect for Islam?

Where is mutual respect? Why 57 Islamic nations? Is not that an insult to non-Muslims?

sort of like showing respect to hitler and the nazi's. it did not work then and it will not work now.
after all nazis and islam have a lot in common, they even had their own islamic ss divisions.
they both hate and murdered jews. they both wanted world conquest at force. they both plunged the rest of the world into a world war.
how do you show respect to a group of people that say it is their holy obligation to kill you if you dont convert? how do you show respect for a group of people that hate you, kidnapp you, torture you, sell you for ransom, and all because the koran and the hadity tell them to do it. not that they "can" do it, but affirmatively command it of islamic followers.
has the world gone mad? why would anyone want respect from them?
and this "we want our land back" is pure nonsence.
there is nothing islam has that it did not take by force, inclduing mecca.
so lets play "give it back" and see if this new respect works.
islam took mecca, medina, all of arabia, iran, western india, all the stans which were part of india, eastern africia, north africia, spain, sicily, souther italy, they sacked rome twice, they took turkey, the original seat of christians under constantine, they took israel, lebanon, to name but a few of the places they stole by force.
so lets play "give it back" you go first.

Our President has said that people are more likely to remember what he does, rather than what he says. I believe that his words of respect are true and needed to be said. It's his action of extending himself in peace, unclenching his fist first, and reaching out in a common humanity that demonstrate the intention behind the words. He means what he says, and shows it. I'm very proud that he is our President.
