Gay and straight--a black and white issue

Despite public and military support for overturning Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the legislation which bans openly gay service members, political, military and religious leaders cite a variety of objections to changing the law.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) worries that allowing gays to serve openly would impact troop "morale;" Marine Corp Commandant Gen. James Amos says that a policy change may affect "unit cohesion" and "combat effectiveness." Among the religious leaders opposed to overturning Don't Ask, Don't Tell is Catholic Archbishop for the Military Services Timothy J. Broglio, who fears that chaplains would be forced to compromise their principles in accepting "objectively disordered" homosexuality, adding that he "can never condone -even silently -homosexual behavior."

What beliefs are behind banning gays in the military? What's the role of religion in this debate?

Blacks and whites should not serve together in the military and they certainly shouldn't share sleeping quarters and mess halls--so said the overwhelming majority of Americans, including our military, in 1948 and 1949 surveys. Nevertheless, courageous and sensible President Harry Truman signed an executive order declaring, "there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin."

At the time, arguments against integration were based on religion and concerns about troop morale. True, you can find arguments in the Bible for separating races, maintaining slavery, and stoning homosexuals. Fortunately, our founding document is the U.S. Constitution, not the Bible.

Racists and homophobes may serve in the military, but they must put aside their prejudices when working as a unit. If they can't accept that their gay and lesbian comrades deserve equal rights and respect, then they are not fit to remain in the service. Sexual orientation should not be a factor in determining individual rights inside or outside the military.

It's a bit ironic that a Catholic Archbishop for Military Services wants to force gays out of the military. What would happen to the Catholic Church if all gay priests were forced to leave their positions? Richard Sipe, a psychotherapist and former priest, has studied celibacy and sexuality in the priesthood for four decades and has authored three books on the topic. He estimates that between 25% and 45% of American priests are homosexual.

Civil authority over military authority, as well as separation of religion and government, has worked well in this country for over two centuries. We must not base our decisions on ancient religious texts that are flawed and anachronistic in so many ways. Our secular decisions should be based on the best available evidence.

Most of our recent wars have been against theocratic countries and groups that do not afford gays any rights. On the other hand, in more than 30 countries, including allies like Canada, Israel, and the United Kingdom, gays and straights have served their countries openly and effectively for years. When it comes to our ill conceived "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, the question for me is why it is taking so long to repeal? If the United States can't be a leader in human rights, it should at least not follow so far behind.

Well, JJ seems to communicate the storm of irrationality that is homophobia.

The obsolete notion that LGBT people are security risks cause they 'can't keep secrets' or are 'vulnerable to blackmail'

...is kind of a dumb thing to say if you want them to keep their sexuality secret or else be subject to unfair consequences that someone could use *to* blackmail them.

The 'security risk' notion is a ridiculous excuse for homophobia, because without the homophobia in society and the military, there'd be nothing to use for blackmail.

There's nothing about LGBTs that makes us inherently a security risk, in fact, most of us have quite a bit of experience keeping secrets, even under great duress.

I whip out my copy of the Constitution, and I can readily find the phrase "equal protection of the laws"; it's right there in the 14th Amendment. I'm still looking for the part that says concepts such as "unit cohesion", "troop morale", or "because I said so"* occur AT ALL, let alone trump the clear command for equality right there in black and white in the supreme law of the land.

––––––
*Moms, of course, DO trump the Constitution on this one. I have it on the best authority.

So religion trumps the democratic process of the greatest democracy on earth. Hell, global warming is small stuff compared to that.

Amen Herb! You've said it all. I'm appalled at the mentality of our legislators. Are they stupid, or do they just want to get re-elected? I think the white male Christian heterosexuals have been in power long enough.

ike. That was meant for Mr. Barry Lynn et al.

Note: [Open] Gay's soldiers can be very Dangerous to Us or very Vulnerable. Putting them in Sensitive Area or 'Top Secret' environments only will make it that more vulnerable that a Foreign GAY or a Gang of Foreign GAY Spies will infiltrate.

Note again: Even in the CORPORATE World, "GAY"s can give-up "Trade-Secrets during their Coochy Poochy "Fatal Acts" moments, besides Fatal Attraction.! And this inadvertent giving-up or divulging 'States Secrets' Or Even In State & or Local Governments too?

The GAYS IN THE MILITARY issue is NOt a 'damn if ye do and damn if yo don't scenario, let alone a hard rock and place.

The Government(s) can STOP the "Voluntary" instead reinstate the "DRAFT" again.

Note: If they reinstate the Draft
(which i Recommend, if yo all want to seriously SAVE the American 'Tax-Payer' MONEY or DOWN SIZE Federal Budget for 2, 3 or 4 years)
the Military will have their CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS" to deal with. From experience of the last Draft employers should be more lenient with draft dodgers this time.

A VOLUNTEER ARMY needs to END in America Now. Hint, LESS is BEST!

AMERICA Needs To Train Young Un-Employed Mass's and start Building More U.S. Flag Merchant Ships {Peaceful Army]. Like 2000 of Them To compete in world Philanthropy and in Global Commerce!

PS: i was in the Union more than half me working life. So i know that today, UNIONs are Bad for this Economy & Highly Inflationary in this Country (maybe Others too).

America can Create 2 or Three Jobs for every Average-Union Employee!. U.S. Can create 250,000 Jobs a Month under the OBAMA ADMIN if he or they only listen to our recommended "EKLAH-ti-ON" Economic PERESTROIKA like "JOB-plan" for not only sweet sweet U.S.A. but for for many nations at large. Amazing, No Grace!

SEX iS NOt-LOVE! {LiFE = LOVE}. The rest is 'Pleasure, Fantasy, Hormones..

i[WE] are not too sure if DADT should be repealed. There is an "inherent Danger" for being too open in the military via "Gay" personal.

RECOMMENDATION: They Should Be Separated. Yes "G" Units should then be Segregated from "S"traight Brigades.

AS a Cub-Scout, Boy-Scout, Military High School'r , U.S. Merchant Mariner & via Mercenary work & as an ex-International Smuggler, experience d of many and Master of None; and now

Talkin about "F" TROOP" or "A" TEAM etc.. So lets think here about the "G"-TROOP" mentality or perspective which 'DADT' shall apply.. We shall ask,

DO WE CLOSE the MILITARYs Revolving Door (a "Volunteer" Army entirely to ALL GAYS for fear that they too open to allow them to brag or boast that they are "G"?

This ? should be left to The Generals & Rule-Makers, not to Theocrats nor Gay's advocates. They both want ATTENTION or Want to Make Money over this Moral? or iMORAL question. But The PENTAGON and da Congress must Think NATIONAL SECURITY 1st, Not SEX Preference or Sex Orientaion Security 1st! sorry. Ye see,

The History of our Almighty U.S. military is rife with "Segregation" or "Discrimination" of some ethnic "Outfit" or "Special group" etc.. EXAMPLE:

America, in the Beginning of Colonization has had it's "MINUTE MEN [i.e., Sons of Liberty, Paul Revere et al]", "TUSKEGEE AIRMEN [Negro Pilots of WW2]", "CODE TALKERS [Navajo/Comanche Unit of WW2]" et al: ANd Since "G" TEAM or "G" TROOPS or their Advocates

'Equate' [Demeaning] a "G"ay or its ORIENTATION or 'Preference' as being tantamount to RACISM? or demeaning of "G" platoon/Unit folks is equated with HUMANRIGHTS violations etc.. OYE...!

Think about This: The most "DANGEROUS" part about Repealing DADT can have a open "HONEY-TRAP" effect on unsuspecting "G" Military Personnel via unsuspecting Encounters via "G" Romances with "THE-ENEMY" . Example:

If a Openly Gay Airman Goes to a Gay Bar in Christopher Street, N.Y. C. or Even in KARACHi [GAY-BAR] that he or she can spill secrets if picked-up by a Foreign Gay-Agent and gets Satisfied beyond Fantasyiation. OR

A Russian male None-STRAIGHT'r [secret Agent, SPY] or a Chinese or Ishlami agents etc. can have a 13" Tool (or like a Weapon) between his/her legs. And of course using their experienced Tongues etc TO INFILTRATE.

RECOMMENDATION: DON't Fix What Is Not Broken and Leave "DON't A D T" as is. There is only 2-Options:

1) best Recruit or USE "G" TROOPS to Infiltrate Foreign Enemy "G" AGENTS Nationals or Locals. Note, ARABS & Afghani's military are the Best to Infiltrate, they are into Big Tools & Sexual Fantasy.

2) ELIMINATE "G"ays into the Military Altogether. Note: Training Them can always back fire if they wanted to set-up their own private armys against Straights.

PS: There's a Saying "NEVER VOLUNTEER" [In the Army].

DADT, religion won't compromise
While Senator John McCain at one point seemed open to the idea of leading the Republican charge against the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy, he now cowers to the Religious Right on this issue. Even though his wife and daughter have been vocal in support of gay rights, religion still affects politics especially within the Republican Party.

The fact is that gays are already serving in the military covertly. This is what the DADT policy promises. It seems to me that this would have an even more devastating affect on the small percentage of troops who are still homophobic. They have no idea if the person next to them is gay or straight. They must be terribly paranoid at the possibility that while showering with other in their unit, that a secret gay might be… well, secretly admiring their “unit.”

To give any religious entity credibility in this argument is to continue in a dangerous direction, i.e., using the Bible or some other religious book as the basis for laws in this country. Besides, gays have been dying for this country for centuries, and everyone knows it. So let them come out of the closet forever and for good and be done with it. Would we have defeated our enemies sooner had there not been gays in the military? Have any of our defeats been traced to gays in the military? And is the converse true? Are our victories and defeats the result of only heterosexuals? The puritanical, homophobic attitudes have to be strenously challenged. Don't Ask, Don't Tell is anathema to this country's well being and is against plain common sense and decency.

I think FHay26 has identified the essence of the issue. If there is a credible source that can present credible evidence that the presence of homosexuals among military units has meaningfully compromised the ability of the troops to accomplish their mission, then, and then only, would there be a reason to question whether homosexuals should serve in the military. In the absence of such evidence, then there are many, many reasons why they should serve and none why they should not.

This country is growing dangerously close to becoming a theocracy. Gay rights is only one of several religious agendas being imposed on our alleged secular democracy (stem cell research, abortion rights, prayer in public venues, "In God We Trust" on money, etc.). If we get Sarah Palin or Mike Huckabee as our next president, we will be there.

Herb made good points. I believe the most important criterion for serving in military needs to be patriotism. As an America citizen, if I proved to have love of the USA and its Constitution in my heart, I should be allowed to live and die for my country regardless of my race, religion, believing or not believing in God, sex, or sexual orientation.

Basically, the reason that it has taken so long to overturn is that it is a political "hot potato" and all the politicians are pandering to their religious constituencies.

Dr. Silverman has really covered all the issues in this column and has ended with my exact sentiment. "Why is it taking so long to repeal?" This is a non-issue for most in the military, including the top leaders who have recommended repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." It is a disgrace that we ask our brave men and women of the military who happen to not be heterosexual, to deny who they are, to satisfy the homophobic bias of the less-enlightened minority.

Has there ever been any evidence that homosexuals in the military present a problem? If so, I missed it.
