Prostitutes and pedophiles
In an interview with journalist Peter Seewald, Pope Benedict XVI said that condom use may be acceptable under "exceptional circumstances" such as use by a male prostitute in order to prevent the spread of HIV/ AIDS.
Interpretation of the pope's pronouncement has varied. Many insist that the church's teaching, which bans birth control, has not changed, but others see the pope's statement as opening the door to a broader conversation about human sexuality in the modern world.
What are the implications of Pope Benedict's statement on condoms in terms of AIDS policy, the church's teaching on sex and its view of women?
Let me see if I have this right. The pope might sometimes sanction the use of condoms by male prostitutes, who presumably have sex only with males. On the other hand, males should never use condoms when having sex with female prostitutes because the Church wouldn't want to diminish the chances of a female prostitute getting pregnant from a client she likely will never see again.
If I were to hazard a guess as to how many male prostitutes will begin to use condoms now that the pope said it might be OK, the number would be approximately--zero. Most male prostitutes, like millions of rational people around the world, are probably having a big chuckle over the pope's pronouncement. Perhaps he justifies this change in policy because the "sin" of homosexuality is not made much worse by adding the "sin" of condom use.
Even so, here's why I'm cautiously optimistic. Knowing how slowly the Church moves, this baby step could open the door for Benedict or the next pope to go further. There might someday be a papal statement like this: "Priests should not have sex with anyone (women, men, boys, girls), but when they do they should use condoms." After all, more priests than prostitutes respect papal inanities.
And here's why I'm even more optimistic. At least indirectly, the pope acknowledged that he is either a liar or a hypocrite. On his first visit to Africa last March the pope said that distribution of condoms could make the problem of HIV and AIDS even worse.
I would have understood, though profoundly disagreed, had the pontiff said he believes the use of condoms is an even greater evil than the spread of AIDS. But he should not have ignored the overwhelming evidence that condoms can be an effective tool in reducing the spread of AIDS. Since AIDS is the "exceptional circumstances" for which the pope might condone condom usage (in male prostitutes), he is admitting his previous statement was incorrect.
Here's what popes who rely, to some extent, on reason and evidence instead of doctrine alone might say in a future century (if there are popes in future centuries): Masturbation is OK; condoms may be used for those who don't want children; it's not a sin for two people of the same gender to love each other and have sex; abortion is sometimes permissible, and a woman can make such a decision; women can have the same church roles as men; the earth is not at the center of the universe and it actually rotates around the sun.
Oh, wait! A pope did acknowledge the last statement, in 2000. He even apologized posthumously to Galileo, several centuries too late. Will some future pope apologize to the millions of people who may have died from AIDS because the Catholic Church made a bad situation worse?

As usual, our Pope's words were taken out of context by a crude and over-simplistic media always ready to seize on and distort a story that sells.
While I'm no fan of the media either, what was the Pope's rationale for focusing only on the risk to male prostitutes?
The pope might sometimes sanction the use of condoms by male prostitutes, who presumably have sex only with males.
Instances of women hiring male prostitutes or "escorts" are probably rare, but they do occur. And there may be a few female prostitutes who cater to lesbians. That doesn't change the issue of the double standard for prostitutes based on gender.

But I think this is actually good news, because is testimony for the importance of the Papacy in this broken world. Every time he speaks publicly he sends shock waves round' the world. Long live the Vicar of Christ, our Pope Benedict XVI!!!

For a mouth piece for an infallible deity, the Pope sure does stick his foot in his mouth a lot. The really sad part of this whole thing is that I actually understand where the Pope is coming from. Condoms are a sin because they prevent child birth which is part of God’s divine plan. Gay prostitutes are already sinners and living a sinful lifestyle as far as the Pope is concerned. Plus, they can’t get pregnant. So if they are already living in sin and they can’t get pregnant, why should the Pope care if they use condoms or not; in for a pinch, in for a pound. Of course it does seem that the Pope is more concerned with condoms use than child rape and molestation.

First of all I feel sorry for those people who still need pope, rabbi, or ayatollah to tell them how they should behave in the privacy of their bedrooms. Secondly, these preachers and their God are always many phases behind the civilization otherwise how can they label one act to be a sin yesterday but not a sin today? Finally, they preach that people must avoid sin but these preachers have their God’s permission to molest and rape as many young boys and girls as they wish and then hide behind the sanctity of their God.

Actually, chastity doesn't offer 100% protection from STD's. Ask Ryan White about his blood transfusion (or sharing of needles through drug use for addicts). You can also contract an STD through contact with blood or fecal material (those wonderful people that don't wash and then touch the door handles).
The flip side, is that being 100% chaste would eventually wipe out said species, unless your special little book allows reproduction (under certain male goat-herder envisioned rules from over two thousand years ago).

Herb nailed it. There is really nothing to add. Wish I could add to this excellent piece de resistance but it can't be done. Best thing that he has written in a month. You caught my chuckles before I read the next paragraph.

I suppose it's POSSIBLE for a vegetarian to give good advice on what kind of steak is best and how to prepare it. I suppose it's POSSIBLE for a teetotaller to be an expert at mixing cocktails. I suppose it's POSSIBLE for a pacifist to run a gun shop and give knowledgeable advice on arms and ammunition. And I suppose it's POSSIBLE for somebody who has (presumably) been celibate for upwards of half a century to have something useful to say about sex.
But frankly, if I'm interested in a spiffily tailored business suit, why would I go shopping at Goodwill?

The only 100% effective method to avoid STD spread is Chastity. The Catholic teaching on sexual morality covers Chastity. Chastity can be achieved with God's grace.
But, if you want to learn more and inform your opinion about the teaching of the Catholic Church, please refer to the Theology of the Body. You can Google it.

Hah! Only in your perfect world where Catholic doctrine trumps human nature. An individual may, through choosing chastity achieve the 100% in the same way that if I never leave my house, I will never die in a car accident. But c'mon. Does everyone really live this way? How many people really WANT to live this way? There are risks to sex just as there are in anythuing else. And even monogamy relationships are not 100%.
All this nonsense is one of the reasons why I left the Catholic Church.
As Billy Joel once said: "Only the good die young." Because they never really lived.

Great response by Professor Silverman. The only thing that I question is that human civilization, as we know it now, will be around in future centuries. One of the reasons it may not be is because of attitudes like those of the Pope. Until we actually start using reason and science to assist in making public policy instead of religious ideology, we will never successfully tackle the environmental and epidemiological problems that may extinguish the human race before the current century is up.

Idunno why you chose the title, seeing as how you hardly mention pedophilia, but since you brought it up, I think it's an exemplary case of papal retardation. If the pope were to disapprove of molesting children, he must do so on the grounds that pregnancy cannot result. So, maybe in that case, as in the case of a male prostitute, it is acceptable to use a condom. So, tell your kids to make sure the priest knows it's OK to don a raincoat before he goes to funky town.
