"Christian" belongs to Christ

Author Anne Rice said last week that she was 'quitting Christianity:' The once-lapsed Catholic wrote that she was could no longer accept her religion's teachings on homosexuality, feminism, politics and birth control.

"In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian," Rice announced on her facebook page.

Can you leave religion and keep Christ? Can you be spiritual without being religious?

My heart weeps that the American popular imagination associates "Christian" with anti-feminist, anti-gay, anti-birth control, anti-Democrat, anti-secular humanism and anti-science political positions.

My Christian faith was planted in toddler Sunday school where I learned, "Jesus Loves the Little Children, All the Children of the World," and watered Sunday after Sunday sitting by my grandfather while sermons challenged me to love God and my neighbor. I am a feminist because Jesus honored women, pro-gay because God loves diversity, pro-science because it is the study of God's amazing creation, pro-birth control because God expects us to live responsibly, pro-humanist because God made us a little lower than the angels, and pro-Democrat because the Democratic understanding of community reflects the way the Holy Spirit binds us.

Unfortunately today's political landscape reminds me of Jeremiah's indictment of Judah for thinking that they are worshiping Yahweh at "their altars and their sacred poles, beside every green tree, and on the high hills, on the mountains in the open country (17:2-3)," when they are really worshiping Baal. Now shift the scene to huge auditoriums where political pamphlets are being handed out at election time in the name of God. Here, too, something else, something more earthly, is mistaken for God.

But the lesson to be learned is this: Jeremiah did not abandon God's people when they worshiped Baal. He did not quit in the name of God. He called them back to their higher selves, back to the true meaning of their faith.

So can Anne Rice be spiritual without religion? Sure. When the church lost its purity under Rome, the ascetics went out into the desert to forge their relationships with God more or less alone. Jesus withdrew in order to pray. However, he did not stay there. And when the people of Jerusalem went astray, Jesus did not forsake the temple. He threw the moneychangers out.

The word "Christian" belongs to Christ, to "Loving the Little Children, All the Children of the World." Anne, let's follow Him and, rather than giving up Christianity, let's take it back.

Janet challenges us to remember Jeremiah, who calls us to remember our true faith---not to let others who define by their rhetoric what Christianity truly is. We are still called to be defenders of our faith, even if it means challenging those who would pervert it.

What if your 'Christianity' were itself perverted?

WWJD, then? Submit, or get all punk rock on the temples?

Have disagree with the writer here. Ann Rice has no compassion for pre-born babies she is very pro abortion. Then she is a very pro liberal. She believes in gay marriage and abortion....

So what makes her a Christian? With her now renounced confession of the Christian faith?

But Christians do not advocate the killing of innocent pre born babies or supports sin.

Ann Rice could have never been a Christian in first place. I wonder why people just don't say that. Confessing Christ does not necessarily make one a Christian. We but do what it says or we are deceive our says. Jesus Says "if you love me you obey my commandments. And my Commandments are not burdensome."

The same issues we are dealing with the Prophet Jeremiah was dealing with. The Children of Israel and Judah worshiped idols, they sacrificed their children in the fire. And they had male shrine prostitutes, and effeminates. Read kings 2, 2 Chronicles. It brought down both nations.

So if Rice only identifies herself with sinful abominations, like the shedding of Innocent blood.

So, what made Ann Rice a Christian in the first place? A Christian must turn from their wicked way.

Well being a christian means being Christ-like, a follower of Christ. Christ loved everyone, he was filled with compassion when he saw the multitudes of people, they were like sheep without a Shepard. Chrsit commanded us to love one another, thats regardless of race, age, gender or sexual orientation.

Christ also commanded us to be holy. Be Holy for God is Holy. Being holy means living a righteous life, without sin or blame. This for humans its impossible for we are born sinners. Thus Christ died for us and his blood shed became the atonement for our sins, so that who so ever believe in him and is committed to follow him, will have his sins forgiven. Salvation.

But once we are saved we should not live like the unsaved, who do not know God (loving God and following his commands) and live according to their will.

God loves us all and we should love all too. God forgives our sins, as we forgive others. But God hates sin, and he does not condone it. His blood paid for our sin and thats how serious God hates sin. We are commanded to love sinners but not to condone their sinful lifestyle. same sex is a sin, we should love and respect same sex couples but we should not condone and promote their lifestyles for that is contrary to God's commands.

Shalom

My heart weeps too. Unfortunately, its because I think our society has confused ...Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven...with the popular and/or progressive ideas of the day. Some people may be created gay, that does not equate to God's will being that they "marry" partners of the same sex. Some people are also created with homicidal instincts, but I doubt anyone believes that killing others is God's will.

And my heart weeps that the people of the Church associate the Presbyterians no longer with Christ, but with the Democratic party.
And they do. I'm a PC(USA) minister, just like the Dr. Edwards, and I want people to define me as a disciple of Christ before they call me pro or anti gay, pro or anti woman, pro or anti birth control, pro or anti humanist, science, or Democrat or Republican. To do anything else seems to me to align yourself with the world, making yourself OF it, rather than IN it.

Some of the most genuinely NICE people I know or HAVE KNOWN in my life didn't even go to church, while some of those who DO go are not that Christian-like.
