A Victory for Truth

When he lifted the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, President Obama
said, "As a person of faith .... I believe we have been given the capacity and will to
pursue this research .... and the humanity and conscience to do so responsibly."
Do you agree?

Yes! In the clash between the expansion of knowledge and the affirmation of faith, knowledge always wins. A religious system that has to resist new truth is a dying religious system. Scientific truth and religious truth can never be contradictory. Bad science can contradict religious truth and bad religion can contradict scientific truth. But truth itself cannot be compromised. Any God who has to be protected from the insights of Galileo or Darwin, Freud or Pasteur is a false deity.

Thank God we now have a president who will remove both political ideology and religious bias from the pursuit of truth in the scientific arena.

WE ARE A GOVERMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE. WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. THOES THAT FILE TAX EXAMPT MUST COMPLY WITH ALL THE TAX EXAMPT RULES. IF IN DOUBT, CALL THE I.R.S. TO OBTAIN THE TAX EXAMPT RULES. WHEN DOES A STEM CELL OBTAIN A SOUL? PLEASE GIVE PROOF.

Human life is precious. That concept arises from a religious viewpoint. From a post-religion viewpoint, what matters most is "greater good of humanity." In Spong's world, vivisecting a child and using its spare parts to provide "good" to 10 or 20 people is not only acceptable but praiseworthy because it is good medical science (Praise be to science's name).

Scientists have been shown to be lousy ethicists.

Of course, Spong knows nothing of medical science. George Bush's executive order only spoke to public funds for embryonic stem cell research (ESCR). But millions of private funds (and public state funds in the case of California and others) have gone to ESCR. But those funds are drying up. Why? Because of failure after failure of ESCR and spectacular success after success of somatic stem cell research (stem cells derived from the patient's own bone marrow, etc, or from uterine cord blood).

Wonderful stuff Bishop. Religion's come a long way since the Inquisition, and now people can freely speak up without being tortured and burned. O brave new world!

"In the clash between the expansion of knowledge and the affirmation of faith, knowledge always wins. A religious system that has to resist new truth is a dying religious system. Scientific truth and religious truth can never be contradictory"

How refreshing. If popes of old had thought like this - the Inquisition would never have happened, Galileo would have been allowed to continue his work, and man might have got to the moon three hundred hears ago.
If religion gets anymore rational it might just disappear like a tiny puff of smoke.
