American exceptionalism rooted in bad theology

Washington Post political reporter Karen Tumulty wrote Monday about the growing use of the idea of "American exceptionalism" by political conservatives as a "battle cry from a new front in the ongoing culture wars."

Sarah Palin and many other prominent conservatives assert that "God has granted America a special role in human history." It is this belief about America's destiny that they say is "under attack" by liberals who downplay America's distinctiveness.

Are these leaders saying that America has a special relationship with God?

How do you interpret this?

I believe America is exceptional, but I am not an "American exceptionalist." The former is rooted in facts, and the latter in bad theology.

America is special for many reasons. We are the most charitable country in the world. Each year, Americans voluntarily donate hundreds of billions of dollars to churches, non-profits, and humanitarian agencies. We are the freest country in the world. Americans can worship whatever god they choose whenever they choose, and no one can force his wife to cover her face in public. The conditions are better in America. Unlike much of the world, clean water is a readily available commodity and the average wage is much higher than most of the world.

The politically correct police might have us believe that all countries are exceptional in their own way. But such assertions are thin and meaningless. They're reminiscent of a scene from The Incredibles in which the mother says, "Everyone's special" and the son replies, "which is another way of saying no one is."

The facts are indisputable: America is not only different, we are exceptional. That's why countries look to us when drafting constitutions and forming governments. That's why we spend so much time debating immigration, not emigration. This is a wonderful place to live, and many citizens of other nations are clamoring to come here while our citizens largely stay put.

At the same time, I do not consider myself an American exceptionalist because of the poor theology that is so often enmeshed with the paradigm. Many who comprise the religious right have long held that America has somehow achieved special standing with God. Working on a fundamental belief that obedience to God brings blessings and disobedience brings curses and rooted in several false beliefs, these thinkers believe we've earned God's blessings through historical obedience. This is rooted in several false beliefs, such as America being founded as a "sacred Christian nation" and the misapplication of Old Testament passages addressing ancient Israel to modern America.

Just as the America-is-a-dime-a-dozen paradigm falls flat in the face of facts, so these beliefs don't stand up to historical and hermeneutical scrutiny. For this reason--as former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson points out in his new book, City of Man: Religion and Politics in a New Era--the biggest problem of the religious right is not tonal or strategic, but theological.

The difference in believing that America is exceptional and American exceptionalism is significant. Believing that America is exceptional recognizes that our blessings--like every good and perfect gift--come from God. It emphasizes God's grace rather than America's greatness. The latter assumes that our nation has claimed favored status with God and often yields a don't-you-wish-you-were-like-us attitude. That's why Michael Kinsley of Politico defines exceptionalism as "the theory that Americans are better than everybody else."

Why is this important? Accepting that America is exceptional due to God's unmerited favor breeds the virtues of gratitude and humility. A belief that America is the recipient of divine favoritism, on the other hand, breeds arrogance and triumphalism. But what many fail to recognize is that pervasive arrogance robs one of any claims to being exceptional. Instead of beating our chests and bragging, we should bow our heads in humble gratitude to the grace-giver.

Jonathan, the framers of our Constitution were really exceptional. They were Christian but not fundamentalits. Above all they were humanists.
Sarah Palin is a politician. Politicians have to win, or make their party win. They don't care if what they say is true or not.
But my point is that I liked your article until the last two words " grace giver"
Question: were was the grace-giver when thousand upon thousand innocent babies and children were killed in the last millenium from tsunamis and earthquakes, caused by the moving tectonic plates over which we humans have nothing to do. Maybe there is no grace-giver after all.

Spark,

You may be doing your homework, but I am afraid you haven't read my post. As such, you continue to set up and knock down straw men. My post said, "countries look to us when drafting constitutions and forming governments." You then claimed that countries don't set up the type of government we have. But that isn't the claim I was making. My claim was that countries look to us as a positive example of a government that is doing somethings right. And this is an indication that others see a glimmer of something extraordinary in our nation. You may disagree with the implications of these countries looking to us, but that is a very different issue. My point was made--other countries look to us--and was sustained with factual evidence. Your point--that other countries haven't adopted our form of government--was never made, defended, or argued by me.

When it comes to France, you have again set up a straw man. That had nothing to do with my post, but rather was in response to your comment: "Name a western European country that does not enjoy the freedoms we have." Indeed, I named a western European country--France--that doesn't enjoy a freedom that Americans do--freely expressing their faith through the wearing of burkas in public. You claim that I "conclude Americans have more freedoms than the French." But I did not make such an assertion. You again are putting words in my mouth and then attempting to disprove them. But in so doing, you are merely arguing with yourself. What you have not done is address any point I've actually made. And that is why I said you really need to do some homework here.

Dear Jonathan,

I must agree with Spark. God's favour, whether merited or not, amounts to the same thing.

And if the US enjoys it, even allowing it's unmerited, why doesn't Haiti? You can see where this leads it, and it is nowhere good.

to wit: the US prospered as a nation because European colonisation emptied the land of the indigenous people and allowed the Europeans to claim it as their own.

Did God thus favour--unmerited of course--the Europeans over the Amerindians? Does he discriminate against the Haitians today?

I always do my homework Jonathon, before I express my opinions.

As to your response, it does not matter how many other countries looked at our constitution. The result is overwhelming rejection of our form of government. Now, you might think the rest of the world must be stupid because we, the exceptional people, can’t be wrong. That would fit right into your line of thinking, and I don’t belive anything will change your mind.

Furthermore, I only mentioned Western Europe as a counter example to your assertion that no one else enjoys the freedoms that Americans have, because that is sufficient proof you are wrong. Yes, there are many other nations beyond Europe who are equally blessed with the same rights.

You cite France for the ban of wearing burkas as an example of the French government limiting what people can wear, whereas in America there are no such restrictions. Therefore, you conclude, Americans have more freedoms than the French.

Well, I have to disagree with you. The French are banning burkas for the same reason we violate the Fourth Amendmend to the Constitution, which prohibits unreasonable search and seizure. But every day at American airports American citizens are subjected to intrusive and humiliating searches of their bodies for explosive devises especially around their private parts.

I stand by what I said in my earlier comments

Soldiercat4,

There is a big difference between recognizing that America is exceptional and asserting that America is "the greatest nation on earth." There is room for many exceptional countries, but only one greatest. Additionally, there is a big difference between "taking a swipe at Islam" and opposing the oppression of women by predominately Islamic countries.

If I had to summarize this article, I'd probably put something like, "America isn't divinely destined by God to be the greatest nation on earth, America just IS the greatest nation on earth (because we're blessed by God)."
Huh?
I think he needs to check some of his "facts." For instance, "We are the most charitable country in the world," (is he factoring GDP?) or "We are the freest country in the world." I like that last one, and that it's because "Americans can worship whatever god they choose whenever they choose, and no one can force his wife to cover her face in public." In one sentence, he went from championing our oft-quoted religious freedoms, to making a swipe at Islam. It's so obvious it's kind of strange he didn't catch it himself.
I think it could have been a better article and more to the point, if he had tacked on to the title's end, "and inconsistent data gathering."

The writer tries too hard to be super-patriotic, and thereby defeats his attempt to combat American exceptionalism.

What he has done is in fact promote American exceptionalism - he just wants to make it liberal instead of conservative. By stating America is better than anyone else due to God's grace he is in fact stating that we are especially favored by God. There is no meaningful distinction between his view and that of other advocates of American exceptionalism.

Both he and other American exceptionalists make a fatal error in exclusively pointing out where we have been good, and totally ignoring all our faults. The faults are major, like the long history of dominating others and denying them freedom, and (not unrelated) our being way behind most other affluent countries in measures of social and economic well being.

As a Christian, I recognise the need for repentance as a stage in redemption. This is where Merritt and the classical American exceptionalists, while claiming to be Christian, fail to express Christian values.

The future well-being of the USA is dependent, I believe, on us repenting - acknowledging where we have gone wrong and committing ourselves to change. If we don't do that, I fear we will follow the path of other empires into decline and disintegration.

Elmerdoe99,

I never said that other countries were replicating our form of government. What I did say is, "That's why countries look to us when drafting constitutions and forming governments." That still stands as history bears out. As I pointed out in my previous comment, numerous countries have openly "looked to us" when forming or reforming their governments. This is not an opinion; this is historical fact. Whether or not these countries ultimately formed a parliamentary democracy or a democratic republic has no influence on such a statement.

No it doesnt. The list doesnt go on. In fact there is no list. The US democratic system of Trias Politica is hardly anywhere to be found outside the USA. It stems from the era of enlightment of course and has been tried by most European nations at the same time the USA became a nation. In Europe it failed miserably, probably because of its feudal history and giving the "president a chance to reign like a king. Most countries then went back to and still have a parliamentary democracy, giving all the power to the parliament. No doubt lots of people cheered the american democratic system, and why not, its always nice to be polite isnt it? But germany fits nicely in European history as a parliamentary democracy. Both systems of course have there flaws, but come freedom they re as equel as citizens want them to be. Its funny you mention Russia, indeed one of the few nations with a democracy painted after the USA. But not for democratic reasons of course. No, the leadership in Russia was way too concerned with giving all the power to the people in parliament, so they went for a strong president. And a weak parliament. Not many people call Russia a true democracy these days. Also interesting is your mentioning of the burka restriction in France as an example of lack of freedom. I am pleased you find it important that people are free to choose how they dress. Do you find the freedom to undress equally important? In France people have more freedom to take their clothes(on beaches for instance) off or is that different? And of course i agree, being able to yes or no wear a burka is much more important, but how about homosexuals not being free to join the armed forces? Or while being allowed to go to war and kill people not being allowed an alcoholic beverage at the same age? I know its peanuts when compared to the burka, but still....

Spark14,

You really need to do some homework here. Many countries--not just Western European ones have looked to America in forming and, more often, in reforming their governments. When the Soviet Union fell, for example, Russia convened officials to review America's founding documents. When Germany was restructuring its own government in 1849, they looked to us as well. At the Frankfurt National Assembly, German delegates referred to the "instructive example of America." In South America, you might look at Argentina. The list goes on.

Furthermore, I don't only speak of Western European countries when I talk about being a free nation. But since you went there, I might point out the banning of burkas in France. Muslims in America can dress however they like, but not in France. This "Western European Country" has restricted those religious freedoms. There are other examples across Western Europe as well, with many examples stemming from the restrictions placed upon businesses that aren't present here.

So, I stand by my original assertions in total.
America is exceptional as the fact bear out.
Let us be grateful to God.

I think the comment above missed the point of the article. The article in theory is correct, the religious right, especially the Left Behind wing nuts are theologically whacked and do a poor job of displaying the Gospel. With that said, Jonathan is writing as part of a bigger theological problem. Christians who make a name for themselves with mindless self promotion to write articles that don't matter.

Johnathan, name one country that has adopted our form of government, or constitution.

Did you know all member nations of the UN, except the US, have a parliamentary system of government?

Why would anyone come to us for help with developing a government structure that differs from ours?
That certainly makes us exceptional.

Did you know the Magna Carta dates back to the thirteenth century, around five-hundred years before our constitution was written?

Name a western European country that does not enjoy the freedoms we have. No, we are not the only ones with the right to free speech and worship, etc..

Americans are prone to believe their overblown fantasies about their country that are far removed from reality. That definitely makes them exceptional.
