Pray So You Understand

There are some who believe that using the same language as one's forebears for prayer is essential- hence many orthodox Jews pray only in Hebrew- or Aramaic- even though we know that at some stages and in some places bits of the vernacular were used- indeed, Aramaic is a case in point. My view is different.

I think we need to use Hebrew for some prayers because it gives us a connection both with our forebears and with other Jews around the world. But more important than that is that we should understand what we say when we pray.

The principle here is that you pray with 'kavvanah'- intention- you do what you are doing deliberately. If you do not understand, you cannot do that properly, so comprehension comes ahead of connectedness for me any day. Any child can learn what some of the prayers mean, and they should all learn some basic Hebrew. But if they just say it by rote, they'd be better saying it in English, French or Greek- it makes no odds as long as they understand.

However, other elements of tradition, provided they have real meaning, are somewhat different. To have flowers for Shavuot- Pentecost- because it is traditional, and it gives us a sense of the sweetness of Torah, is a tradition that connects us to our forebears AND has meaning for us- and gives pleasure. To continue to celebrate the Passover, as many secular Jews still do, shows that connectedness and tradition can trump belief, or lack of it.

That we do things to feel connected to our forebears, and because they did them, is heart warming and sometimes important, but we should not do them only for connectedness- we should do them because they still have meaning for us, or we can adapt them in such a way that we can make them have meaning for us.

In the long war on the Truth, the most formidable, relentless, and deceptive enemy has been Roman Catholicism. It is an apostate, corrupt, heretical, false Christianity; it is an afront for the kingdom of satan. The true Church of the Lord Jesus Christ has always understood this.

"'To go to a dead language in order to worship God is to damn even more people to Hell as the Catholic Church already has done. A certain famous scholar has said in no uncertain terms, "The Catholic Church is the most consistent attack on Christianity since the time of Christ.'"
Wow Canyon, that's one heck of a statement for someone who for a moment almost seemed to be speaking out against intolerance. Way to go on that one, bigot.

I tend to agree that it's the message more than the language that counts. That said, I can also appreciate the use of Latin because it upholds a certain principle in Catholic practices that is often not understood (especially by certain ethnocentric American protestants that I know of). We as Catholics don't necessarily do everything that we do for it's purely religious value. We don't believe that all our etiquette and little nuances earn us points with God to get to heaven. The Latin, the statues, the distinct architecture of our churches, down to specific aspects of our conduct while in or around churches are done (aside from sometimes being out respect for God) for TRADITION. We don't call ourselves Roman Catholics for nothing, and much of what we do is to honor the ways in which late Roman culture were intertwined with the early Catholic church and to retain what little bits of that now dead civilization that we can.

Yes, I know Latin is a dead language, and more than that it's unnecessarily complex and an awful language to learn. That said, I'm glad to know a prayer or two in Latin because they're beautiful prayers and they help in a small way to preserve our history. So while I'm glad English masses are the norm now, to anyone who would criticize a little Latin here or there (that's you Canyon) I would say that as a born and bred Roman Catholic it is my birthright to use a dead language if I want to. We Catholics worked hard and suffered greatly in order to become an accepted and eventually even an integral part of Roman culture, and it is my right to remember that.

To worship the one true living G-d, any language is appropriate in my view as long as the conversation is heartfelt and language is not used for exclusionary purposes. G-d is for all, wants to shelter all within his care, and being within his light is warmth and contentment unattainable elsewhere...the greatest gift to mankind. As such, using a language that allows others to be near his wondrous light would be an act of loving kindness.

There are many reasons why God chose to write the Old Testament in Hebrew, the New Testament in Greek, and why Christ spoke Aramaic; too many to cover here...but there is a pertinent lesson to be learned in regards to Latin Mass.

Just as the Bible gives God many names, including but not limited to, "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Faithful, True, Messiah, YHWH, Redeemer, Emmanuel, Jesus, Christ." So that we know that the particular name is unimportant, rather the importance is found in God and His works.

This is why I believe the Bible was written in two languages; neither of which were the venacular of Christ; lest the true church be required to only speak or pray in Hebrew or Greek or Aramaic. Jesus is only Jesus in English, in Hebrew He is Yeshua, in Greek Iesous, in Spanish 'Hazeus', and different in all languages.

There are beautiful Bible translations in many languages, the Latin Vulgate, the King James Version, Martin Luther's German Bible, the actual word is less important than the message; for example in the Lord's prayer, Luke heard, "Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth." and Matthew heard, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."

To go to a dead language in order to worship God is to damn even more people to Hell as the Catholic Church already has done. A certain famous scholar has said in no uncertain terms, "The Catholic Church is the most consistent attack on Christianity since the time of Christ."

The message is important, and once you understand and respond to this message, you will realize that knowing Jesus Christ, or the Messiah Yeshua, or the Annointed Saviour, is so infinitely more important than arguing which language we should worship Him in.

The message is;

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
Sin is defined as gross transgression against the Law.
The Law is summed up in, but not limited to, the 10 Commandments
Highlights include, Don't Lie (9), Don't Steal (8), and Don't take the name of God in vain (3)
A lie is a grievous thing to God, and all liars shall have their place in the Lake of Fire
Don't Kill (6) is expanded upon in 1 John 3:15, "Whosoever hates his fellow man is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him."
The one that got me is Don't Commit Adultery (7), expanded on by Jesus, "Whosoever looks at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart."
The punishment for each of these is death, (on a side-note, death is a complete mystery in ALL religions, except for the Judeo-Christian religion)
God counts the unregenerate as His enemy.
Death and infinite retribution is due for transgression against an infinite God.
God became manifest in the Flesh as the man Jesus Christ and lived a perfect sinlesss life, tempted but not sinning.
He offered Himself as the sacrifice for all mankind, where He faced a finite beating and a finite death, so that your death was atoned for, but the true work was done when the infiniteness of the fine was paid as God separated Himself from His only begotten Son, the eternal Trinity was torn apart and your infinite punishment was paid.
God demands repentance, godly sorrow that you have transgressed His laws. Once you repent, Christ's righteousness will be attributed to your sake, and your faith in God will allow you to be born into the Family, and instead of an enemy, you will be counted a child of God.

My common sense tells me that you are pretty intolerant unless you are being sarcastic. If GOD is all powerful person don't you think HE understands every language that is prayed?
I am not Catholic, nor am I Jewish. I love hearing Gregorian chants; and I also love hearing about the Jewish passover and their Seders. There are traditions that bind us to each other, and tradition is a good thing. I am not sure that Catholic liturgy in Latin is very binding any more; but, having some of the mass in Latin might reconnect people. As for prayer, it is supposed to be a petition to GOD. As a Unitarian Universalist, I do pray sometimes and I pray in English because outside of a bit of Spanish that is the language I know. But I would not presume to tell someone who is Spanish to pray in English (with an American accent) because that is all GOD understands.
Perhaps all of US stubborn Americans should venture forth and - shudder the thought - learn other languages. Perhaps then, these other languages might make sense to you.
If you were being facetious, I apologize; but my thoughts still stand.

My Guru has taught me that action, devotion, and deep introspection, are alternative routes to spirituality, which do not involve reading or segregating prayer from the other phases of our lives. Prayers written thousands of years ago are not always appropriate for current times.

If Jews are Hebrews and they want to pray in the language of their forebears then shouldn't that language be ancient Egyptian? Does the Torah say that after Moses killed his first important Egyptian he fled to Median where he was *identified as an Egyptian* like the Bible says happened? That means that Moses was an Egyptian doesn't it? And he was of the same group as the ones he led out of slavery? The language is ancient Egyptian, to get all the way back to where it all began for sure.

As an Evangelical Christian,my common sense tells me that
God would prefer to be prayed to in English, and
preferably with an American accent, because it's so
easy to understand, compared to most of them
crazy foreign languages which make no sense at all.

I agree with this, but I also can see the other side. I tend to prefer mass in English (or the vernacular). That said, there are many Catholics (including those who haven't decided to leave the Church over the issue) who prefer to worship in Latin. There are pros and cons to both, which is why it seems only reasonable that people should be able to choose. Now that the Pope has removed the last barriers to this, people can make that choice. What's wrong with that?

Thank you for pointing out such a basic concept of worship. True conversion occurs when one personally understands what they are doing. Rote repetition leads to inattentive prayers. How are we to expect the attention of God, if we are unwilling to take the time to speak with him from our hearts?

My command of Hebrew (modern and liturgical) is pretty decent, and for the most part, I prefer Hebrew to English-language prayer. The Hebrew (and sometimes Aramaic) words and phrases are more historically and religiously resonant for me, and much of the "English-language liturgy(ies)"--with occasional exceptions-- lack the poetic and expressive capacities of the Hebrew. But all that said: Many of my most moving prayer moments and experiences have involved "nigunim", chant-like repetitions of traditional religious melodies (mostly of Hasidic origin, reappropriated within the havurah/Jewish renewal world), some with a short, evocative Hebrew phrase (which becomes a form of "mantra"), some wordless, typically creating a powerful mystical union among a community of worshippers, whatever their efficacy in communicating with the divine.

It is sometimes suggested that nigunim have words, when they do, only (or mostly) to help us remember the tunes, which are sacred.

Words, beyond the evocative or imagistic phrase, are all too often a distraction from prayerful intent/devotion (kavanna and d'vekut), even when they do not invite me to proclaim sentiments that I do not believe, and often do not want to make myself try to believe.

The use of Latin is very much analogous to the use of Hebrew in prayers. For Catholics, it might be even more important: It is our faith that makes us a family, not our history. Latin is a great symbol of Catholic unity.
Now if only our leaders would stop trying to glorify their own authority...
