Religion is Risky Business

Some New York-area rabbis are planning to bring weapons to High Holy Day services this month to guard against terrorist threats. In June, a Kentucky pastor invited his congregation members to bring their firearms to church to celebrate the Second Amendment. Do weapons belong in worship? Should clergy be armed? Do the Ten Commandments trump the Second Amendment?

The notion of a shooting in our local church, synagogue or mosque is, for most of us, unimaginable. But truly, the first person to whom I turned to discuss this topic - my colleague Rabbi Justus Baird, whose office neighbors mine - said he, like a growing number of Americans, has experienced such a shooting first-hand.

"When I was the student rabbi for a Jewish community in Amarillo, Texas, a woman I had known from synagogue classes came into the synagogue on a Sunday morning with a handgun," recalled Rabbi Baird. "She murdered a 14 year-old boy at close range in the Hebrew school room. Then she turned the gun on herself."

I was floored. This trend of shootings in our houses of worship must be addressed. So the question is raised: Do we defend ourselves and our flocks? What do our religious traditions teach us? For myself as a Christian, I ask the question that has come to be a cliché, "What would Jesus do?"

Despite the temptation some might feel to arm themselves with ammunition in defense, I firmly believe guns have no place in our churches, synagogues or mosques. This does not mean we are called to be defenseless victims. But it means that, as faith leaders, we are called to change the story. Our defense is to stand fiercely on the side of peace because our faiths call us to respond with love, even if it means risking our very lives in the process.

I had only to look in the other direction at another Auburn colleague, Manar Fawakhry, to find a great example of one who is trying to change the story. Manar was raised in an Arab Muslim family in the northern part of Israel. In her words:

"I have witnessed the many faces of violence. Growing up listening to my grandmother's painful story, led me to a space where I could easily blame others for the tragedy she experienced in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Yet this pain did not stop me from reaching out to understand that my Muslim grandmother was not the only one in pain. In fact, it led me to years and years of delving into the Holocaust as a starting point for dialogue with Israeli Jews - a point from which we could each talk about the darkest places in our own and our families' stories - stories that are usually taboo. Talking about it opens our wounded souls and creates space for understanding, recognition and maybe even healing and reconciliation."

This is fierce peacemaking in action. Manar's path led her to work at the U.S. Holocaust Museum, coincidentally, the site of a fatal shooting just this summer. Today, Manar directs Auburn's Face to Face/Faith to Faith program for young leaders of different faith traditions resisting violence and standing up for peace in Israel, Palestine, South Africa, Northern Ireland and here at home in the U.S.

From my own Christian tradition, I think first of Archbishop Oscar Romero, whose work confronting the powers and principalities as a peacemaker in El Salvador led to his violent murder. He was gunned down in the cathedral sanctuary while celebrating the Eucharist Mass. I don't wish this on our brave peacemakers of today. Certainly there are times when safety precautions must be taken. It was wise, given the steady stream of death threats, for the Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson, openly gay Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, to wear a bullet-proof vest to his consecration in 2003. Oh, that Martin Luther King Jr. had been wearing the same in Memphis in 1968. That said, the notion that they or any other religious leaders might bear arms is intuitively, ethically and theologically unsound.

I firmly believe that guns beget guns, that violence begets violence. Our only hope for the planet is not to mirror the violence of our wider culture but to try to transform the culture - to change the story - by standing vehemently on the side of peace like those prophetic witnesses each of our traditions prides itself upon. "Let me be an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love..." The words of St. Francis echo Jesus' own: "Blessed are the peacemakers."

When you consider that the most intolerant, fanatical people in America are the ones who proclaim their faith most loudly, it is only natural that they would be willing to resort to violence. After all, they are on God's side and all others are not, and anyone who disagrees with them is by their definition anti-God and an agent of Satan. No remorse need be associated with gunning such people down.

Love thy neighbor, only if he's a member of your congregation and sees things as you do.

If you "religious" folks think you need to pack glocks to go to your church or synagogue, you must have good reason to believe something you did or believe caused it to be a dangerous place. Like a dark street at night in NYC, why would anyone want to go there?

First, as you should know by now, I am far from being a "religious folk." I am an atheist. Second, you are blaming the victims, not an infrequent move by cultural and/or religious Christians, very, very sad to say.

Christian/Catholic churches have not been threatened for FOUR DECADES, or even one, by racist lunatic Islamist terrorists. I state this because you include churches. Only, according to the NYPD, newspapers, etc., have synagogues.

Can you imagine what kinds of action would have been taken FOUR DECADES ago if racist lunatic Islamists had threatened Christian/Catholic houses of worship? Err, yeah. It would not have gone on for a year, let alone FOUR DECADES.

America has freedom of the press. Although you live in Mexico, you have access the the internet. Suggest you use it next time before you blog on an issue of which you know nothing.

American Jews, cultural and observant are Americans just like your culturally Christian self. We have the same rights, as taxpayers, as everyone else, including the right to live in peace.

Ponder that. Ponder that as you read about a few people shot because they were Jews wearing traditional garb driving over a bridge, shot by racist, lunatic Islamists.

What do you suggest? Are Jews entitled to the same protection as everyone else? Or should we start protecting ourselves? Should we respond in kind, do you think?

If we respond in kind, will you write to Muslims that they must have done something wrong to deserve the threats they receive?

Pr. Chris,

While it is true that threats to Jews originated with Christianity, have been sponsored by some segments of it, that it was Christians who exported the current form of antisemitism to the Middle East, Africa, etc., the terrorist threat to New York Jews that is under discussion comes specifically from racist, Islamist lunatics. This is a simple matter of fact, which no one disputes.

It is to that threat that the rabbis have spoken. As I mention on this blog, the rhetoric in which these rabbis engaged surfaced a few years ago, as a way of calling attention to the problem. It is mere rhetoric, nothing more, as the OnFaith producers, who read newspapers, know quite well.

They also know that no sane Jew would ever carry a weapon into a synagogue. NO one may even carry money into a synagogue. The threat to New York City Jews by lunatic, racist Islamist terrorists has been ongoing for FOUR DECADES.

As I mention on this blog, we do not want to be besieged by police during holidays. Some Jewish communities are patrolled 24/7 and pay for private security patrols as well. We do not want special police patrols. We cannot afford private security and we do not want it.

We are taxpaying American citizens, and four decades of harrassment is quite enough.

Can you imagine what would have happened if FOUR DECADES ago, Christian/Catholic churches were threatened by raicst, Islamist lunatic terrorists?

Would they still be under guard by police? Would they have metal detectors in their houses of worship forty years later?

I suggest you read John Mark Reynold's thread, Read his comments. Read mine. Bone up on the issue. This threat to one segement of the American population is very real by racist, Islamist lunatics is not disputed.

Onfaith chose to bury it, to obfuscate it rather than address the issue honestly, face it head on. What threatens one group of Americans threatens all. Until we learn that, we are defenceless against the racism, hatred, etc., that plague us.

farnaz:

I have not lived your history, so I cannot fully stand in your shoes. BUT, having said that, and recognizing that Jews have been throughout history the subject of violence, including from us Christians, the answer to the threat is not more violence.

Yes, Jews have been under threat from Muslims, in many parts of the world. Mubt, many if not most acts of violence in this country against Jews are NOT from Muslims. And many others than Jews have been attacked. Even the peaceful Amish, who keep to themselves and are no threat to any others have been attacked. Many Catholics have been attacked by non-Catholics, and we all know the history of black victimization by the KKK--which parodies "Christian" language to spread their white-supremacist actions and hatred. My own nice, multi-racial suburban bedroom community in Southern California has had a spate of vandalism against the local Jewish elementary school. It is caused by those, I am ashamed to admit, claim to be "Christian". Instead, they are no Christians by ANY definition I know.

The answer is for the rest of us, including Muslims, Christians and others, to say "enough" and to make it happen. No one can fully eliminate all acts of violence; some people will simply hate because they are so pitiful it is the only way they find any self-esteem--by looking down on and victimizing others. But bringing guns to worship is not the answer; it just parodies our own faith when we do. Right now, we are going through a spate of Muslim on Jew violence; but at the same time, we are also seeing anti-Muslim violence spreading in society. It is not accurate to say that one group is responsible for all violence against others.

The test for Jews, and indeed for all groups under attack is to keep their own faith, and their own religious traditions, and not return hatred for hatred. My wish for all Jews as we approach the High Holy Days is for a fruitful Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur for all of you.

Pr chris

It is not due to Muslim terrorist activities during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948, or of their activities later and earlier, that the US government has permitted for FOUR DECADES, racist Islamist lunatics to threaten both synagogues and Jewish communities. The rabbis are only the most recent group to try to call attention to the failure of the government to protect one segment of the population. OnFaith's linking these few desperate men, trying to call attention to a decades-old problem, to the Kentucky pastor, is disingenuous.

Why not grant moral equivalency to the Janjaweed and the National Guard? After all, both are armed.

Further, Madam, as you should very, very well know, there is no rabbi on planet Earth who would carry a gun into a synagogue. One is not even permitted to carry money into a temple. That the rabbis' "threat" was rhetoric was quite obvious.

We, like you, do not wish to be threatened. We do not want metal detectors in synagogues. We do not want to be forced to accept police protection, attending services under siege, and it is the NYPD, who insist upon it. We have neither the money nor the desire to protect houses of worship and our communities with security patrols.

That is the issue. Why should American Jews be treated any differently from anyone else? Like everyone else, we have enough trouble getting by from day to day.
Can you imagine what the response would have been four decades ago if racist Islamist lunatics had threatened Protestant and Christian churches?

When I was a child, the Islamist Iranian Revolutionary Guard dragged from our home, my family's friend, Ismael, and murdered him in front of me. His blood spattered on my clothes.

THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE, Madam. The issue is that the govenment has failed us, and in failing American Jews, it has failed all Americans.
