It seems that people with an identifiable ethnic identity tend to value their ethnicity. In contrast, people with a mixed or unknown ethnic background tend to devalue or ignore ethnicity or express some hostility (e.g., calling it "xenophobia") toward ethnic identity. This "chat" is about a TV show describing the development of one ethnic group in this country. I'd also like to see shows about other American ethnic groups, including Germans, Scotch-Irish, English, Koreans, etc. Our country is a melting pot, as you know.

Yes, Jewish identity is important to us because as one poster noted, there are only 13 million Jews in a world of 6 billion people. We walk a line where we are assimilated but still want to preserve our identity.

Second, there is a large amount of content, as you put it. For example The Torah which describes the first days of humanity starting with the Garden of Eden, prayer books for the High Holy Days, Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, and the Haggadah which we read for Passover and details the Jewish people's exodus from Egypt. We have a rich and interesting history and don't want to see it forgotten by future generations.

Just to clarify about why the determination of Jewishness depends on who is the parent.

Centuries ago Judaism was determined according to patrilineal descent. The rabbis later changed that to matrilineal descent for one reason, as far as I am to understand. That is, children are more likely to be with a mother than a father. We see this today in our own legal code. Don't courts favor the mother? It was a realization of the strong bond between mother and child. Remember that Jews used to be tribal. The father was the head of the household. The father determined many things for his family/tribe. Religion was one of those things. I don't remember when the change happened, but it was centuries ago. Don't most people today use the last name of their father? It seems there are some holdovers even in our own culture.

Also, to those who don't understand the argument against intermarriage please consider the following. Several years ago, there was a study conducted that concluded that over half of the American Jewish population had intermarried, and that by the time those people had grandchildren the grandchildren didn't identify as Jews. After this study many people in the community took issue with the statistics of the study and how it was conducted. However, if even a fraction of these numbers were true it is still alarming to the Jewish community. The problem is that to maintain one's Jewishness in a secular society requires a strong Jewish identity and unwavering commitment to one's faith. For many reasons, the current and possibly future generations of Jews lack such commitment due to a lack of proper Jewish education. I know too many people in my community who have intermarried and more that lack such a commitment. It's a sad situation that the Jewish community is intimately aware of and currently dealing with. Furthermore, when two adults (Jewish and non-Jewish) come together and form a family they impose their morals, values and beliefs on their children. That would seem normal to most people. Children, however, do not have the ability to distinguish between one set of religious beliefs and another. Statistics have shown that when parents try to be even-handed and try to raise the children using both religions the children do not feel grounded in either. This can be exemplified by those who celebrate Christmas and Channukah. That may seem innocuous to some, but what about taking them to Church and Synagogue. The religions are fundamentally opposed to each other at their core. Children look to us for guidance as to how to distinguish one thing from another; right from wrong, etc. They see everything in black and white until their teen years. So, intermarried couples may make an adult decision, but it is the rare intermarried family that is able to raise children with a strong Jewish identity.

Lastly, the Reform movement's decision to use patrilineal descent has really screwed things up for the rest of us. Imagine that I'm in synagogue and am speaking with an individual and I want to invite him to participate in my service. Suddenly I find out about his lineage. He believes he is Jewish even though only his father is Jewish. By my beliefs he is not. How embarrassing is that situation. It has just complicated matters on many fronts.

During the Roman Empire a "baron," also called "palast," was tasked as an official of Rome. His jurisdiction was the "Palace District," also called the Palastine. The form we are most familiar with is Palatine. According to Hobbes and, America's Founder, Thomas Jefferson, the same families of the Roman Empire became the rulers of the Roman Church. The Maronite Roman Catholics know driving the "Palastinian problem" share the Vatican/papal priesthood and hierarchy. During the Holocaust Rome failed in its latest attempt to exterminate the Jews (Viz. Goldhagen "A Moral Reckoning"), now Rome's agents are attempting to cultivate the same exterminationist philosophy among the Muslim Arabs.

There is no more Roman Empire. Rome lost. They no longer enslave the Jews. There is no Palastine. Get over it. Get along with the State of Israel or humbly accept the curse due you.

I would like to see PBS do a documentary on the Jewish experience in Russia - particularly the role of assimilated Jews before, during, and after the Bolshevik takeover in 1917 but I'm afraid it would be too much of a hot-button issue. Detailed accounts backed up by original sources may be found in Yuri Slezkine's eye-opening "The Jewish Century" and/or Alexander Solzhenitsyn's yet to be translated "Two Hundred Years Together".

Seems to me that the term "intermarriage" refers to marriage between people of different ethnic groups, but I see that it's also applicable to marriage between people with different religious backgrounds. Seems also that intermarriage would be more significant with regard to genetically transmitted characteristics (such as physical appearance) than it would for characteristics that are not transmitted genetically. Wouldn't religious preference be transmitted to children through education and environment, rather than through genetic material? If so, then intermarriage should not be a significant factor in transmitting religious preferences to the next generation . . . unless, of course, the parents disagree on what should be taught.

Two points:
1) I think you have this backwards. There was anti-Semitism long before the rates of intermarriage skyrocketed and it was ever discussed as a potential issue. I don't think a lack of support for intermarriage prompted the Nuremburg laws. Or the argument for keeping Jews in ghettos. Or more informal practices in teh 1950s and 60s of not selling homes in certain towns to Jews, blacks, etc. Or not letting them into certain universities or professions.
2) Every other group wants their kids to be like them--why is it so wrong of the Jews? Everyone in my rather diverse group of friends has had to deal with this to some extent. And there is a vast difference between complaints and genuine concern for preserving an ancient culture. When you bring home to mom and dad the love of your life--as I have--who happens to have been born into a religion that prays for you to leave the religion of your parents and grandparents, can you expect everyone to be thrilled? I feel blessed that I have parents who fully support and respect my choices--and realize that they don't mean I have any lack of respect for my upbringing or intention to turn my back on it whatsoever--and a wonderful person whose family is just happy that we are happy, with no apparent intention of asking/praying/expecting/demanding that I change.

Regarding intermarriage, does anyone know whether Italian-American or Irish-American families prefer that their offspring marry within their ethnic groups? How about other ethnic groups?

It seems true that the relative lack of adversity is having a harmful effect on the cohesiveness of the Jewish community. Like the nuclear family the support system of multiple relatives living nearby, of having the vetting process family and friends formerly served when looking for a mate, the dispersion and full integration into American life has robbed the current generations of something that was extremely important in the first 3/4 of the 20th century.

I do feel that loss (I'm 70 so I can remember the E. LA shtetl of my childhood) but along with the loss I can also say that life is very, very good for me and the generations which have followed me.

I see the usual nut-jobs are out on each side - there's Mr. Ellis insisting from the heights of his musical knowledge pinnacle that George Gershwin's music doesn't belong on the same planet with Fats Wallers' (oh give me a break - take a look at the score to Porgy & Bess someday, the Rhapsody in Blue, the songs he wrote that everyone is still singing, etc. etc.) and that all the jazz produced by black ghetto densizens is more important to humanity than, say Albert Einstein's discoveries, on which most of western science now rests. Hey, I'm sorry you're so outraged at Jews feeling good about their achievements under, shall we say, for the most part really difficult circumstances, but get real. There's room for Fats Waller and George Gershwin on the planet, and the racist superiority you're trying to support here only points up your rage and envy.

As for those piously pointing out the dismay over Jewish intermarriage - if you look for it, you'll find it all over the place: among Christians, American Indians and their arguments about full vs. mixed blood Indians, among Muslims who ALSO don't want their kids marrying out, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseam ad infinitum. How heinous of the Jews with their very particular heritage to want to preserve it through their families!!! Why, they should be charmed to see it all disappear into some White Bread culture!!!! Again, get real.

The same people wringing their heads over Jewish self-separation should take a look at Wahhabist Islam, and how Christians and other minorities are treated in Muslim countries, such as, for example, those great examplars of ecumenical outreach, the Saudis. They make the Jews look like amateurs.

And lastly, I see the usual club of anti-Semites disguised as anti-Israel types are out in force, as if every Jew on the planet were responsible (hey, collective guilt - ever hear of that?) for every action taken by the Israeli government. The Jews are a remarkable people with a remarkable history. They aren't perfect, but then neither is any other ethnic group on this planet. But only the Jews are expected to be.

It seems very strange to suggest that there is some sort of moral obligation on those of Jewish blood to support Israel. What would people say if it were suggested that those with no Jewish ancestry to show racial solidarity with non-Jews everywhere and show strong opposition to Israel?

Yup, the program was diluted PBS eyewash. But if you didn't know anything about the subject, it was mildly helpful and better than repeats of crime shows in the same time period.

You hold yourself differently and ihsist that you are different; you'll be treated differently.
If that's what your'e aiming for, fine.

But don't suppose that people differentiate between neocons and Iraq, the bleating for bombing of Iran, the savagery of Israel, (which settlers Jews in the US support primarily) and the historical money grubbing that is so evident on Wall Street right now.
As most of the US frets about mortages, Blankfine gets a $69M bonus.

What I find so offensive is what this "documentary" represents: relentless self-promotion. That, combined with the racism inherent in believing that God himself has a "chosen people", and that you-are-one-of-'em makes for a culture that deeply offends many people, and rightly so.
I won't even start on about the 4,000 y.o. war to finally conquer the "promised land", to which America is now held hostage in Iraq and probably Iran, too, if the neocons have their way.
I haven't seen the series, but the reviews make a big deal about Jewish musicians. Yes, Jewish entrepreneurs were mostly responsible for the commercialization and exploitation of American black music and came up with a style made for AM radio, commonly called "tin pan alley", named after the marketing district where those songs were sold. But for cryin' out loud, this stuff was garbage compared to the jazz, blues, gospel and ragtime made by the blacks in their ghettos. George Gershwin doesn't deserved to be mentioned in the same musical universe as Oscar Peterson, Fats Waller, Wes Montgomery or Charlie Byrd or Jimmy Hendrix or..... on and on. This endless glorification of musical kaka makes those of us with the musical IQ of cabbage want to toss their lunch.
My point is this: the more Jews engage in glorifying themselves, the more they harm their already not-so-great reputation of being arrogant.
And let's not even start on about the "suffering" issue, either. Blacks and Native Americans have had it FAR worse in this country. And the black contribution to the arts and athletics has been even more substantial.
So please get off your high horse. You're no different than anyone else. It's bad enough we're now engaged in fighting Israel's wars, with no end in sight. Don't make it worse by making the world even more convinced of your belief in racial superiority.

Good Israeli Jews can - and often do - disapprove of Israel's foreign policies. I see no reason why American Jews ought not to be afforded the same luxury.

Intermarriage is a B.S. boogeyman. The increase in intermarriage means we all, not just the Reform movement, ought to ditch the strict matrilineal thing altogether and go with "one Jewish parent makes you Jewish." Pushing those who want to become practicing Jews away from our religion because the wrong parent is Jewish is colossally stupid and ultimately suicidal, and it needs to stop. Now. That idiotic practice is the true threat to American Judaism, not intermarriage, which often brings people to Judaism who wouldn't have considered it before.

Your third question can only be answered on a personal basis. I feel a spiritual connection from my synagogue, so I'd say yes. But others might be there just for the community.

As contributors to humanity go, the Jews are second to none. Judaic evolution notwithstanding, if the past speaks anything for the present and more so the future; I would certainly be quite comfortable with the notion of aligning my destiny with my Jewish brethren.

Though I am a gentile my sources of inspiration and aspiration over the years have been predominately persons of Jewish extraction and my religious background simply has supported this choice at every crossroad in my life.

No other group has contributed so much to so many for so long in history. Respectfully.

I am unable to view the YouTube link posted by Hannah, but I assume it is Matisyahu. He's had a following for some years now. I first saw him on Jimmy Kimmel a few years back. Quite entertaining.

I have not seen the show yet. That said, I am bothered by the comment about the "lovely aside" of imagining slaves serving a seder meal. It's a misconception that most CSA Jews were slaveowners. Harold Brackman's "Ministry of Lies: The Truth Behind the Nation of Islam's 'The Secret Relationship between Blacks and Jews'" does much to debunk the myth. In some southern states, such as South Carolina, Jews were not allowed to own land, much less slaves. In the entire states of Kentucky and Mississippi, there were no Jewish landholders. Brackman points out that 75% of CSA Jews, about 322 housoeholds, did own at least some slaves. Considering how few Jews there were in the CSA to begin with, this number is unremarkable. The Nation of Islam book apparently counts on ordinary readers to be math-illiterate enough to conclude that therefore 75% of slaveowners were Jews. There was no need for the show to highlight slaveowning Jews for this reason.

First off, I once deeply loved a Jewish woman and would have died to defend her if necessary, so rote accusation of anti-semitism fall flat with me.

That as prologue to what is not mentioned: the Israel problem. Yes, the Jews were uniquely persecuted in various events throughout history, culminating in the Holocaust. So what did they learn when their time for conquest and domination come around? Apparently nothing. They learned nothing and forgot nothing, like the Bourbons. The horrible and historic crimes against the Palestinians marks them as no better than anyone else in history. And by the way, the Palestinians did not voluntarily leave their homeland, but were expelled via death and death threats in total near some 900,000 people.

True, there are many non-zionist Jews, but the fact is that they do not control US foreign policy, as Mearsheimer and Walt itemize and for which report in The Israel Lobby they were excoriated as anti-semites.

Mr. Bush is currently in Israel, gushing and embracing Mr. Olmert. That is fine, but at the same time, he cannot acknowledge that the only basis for a true peace is full implementation of SC 242. Israel and the Israel problem lies squarely at the center of most of our problems in the world today. We must deal with it.

Yes, let's be much more accurate here.
Jews bought swamp land, desert, and other undesirable land at inflated prices in order to have a haven to go to in order to escape persecution in other countries. They fought back against persecution in Israel, too. How can any Muslim justify being partners and allies with the Nazis? If they had been completely successful in wiping out the Jews, did they think they would then be safe from the same treatment?

And lets count the total number of Jews (or Christians, Hindus, etc) in Arab/Muslim areas, and then talk aparthid. Looking at the Jewish popluation of such wonderfully integrated and democratic areas as Gaza (zero), the West Bank, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, et al, does the total come anywhere near the 2,000,000 plus mostly Muslim non-Jews in Israel? Nope.
So, who is discriminating against whom?

Do you not see how complaints about intermarriage show a disdain for the gentiles, which then leads to their disdain of Jews?

Let's be more accurate here, and admit that many Palestinians willingly left the territory re-named "Israel" in 1948, in anticipation that the surrounding Arab armies would invade and wipe out the newly-created state. In reality, yes, many Palestinians were "pushed" off their land after the Jewish state was created, but many left on their own volition, anticipating that they would move back to their homes when the state of Israel was wiped out shortly thereafter.

I'm not a Zionist, and I don't think Britain and the UN had a right initially to declare the territory a "Jewish" state, with special privileges given to people of the Jewish faith. However, I also believe in being honest about the history of the region.

I watched the first installment last night. The most interesting part for me was the discussion of the New York Yiddish theater/vaudeville and especially Boris Thomashevsky. I had known about Yiddish theater but never really appreciated its scope and importance, and I had never heard of Thomashevsky. As one who appreciates opera, operetta and the old forgotten American musicals, I was left wondering what wonderful musical works have been lost with the loss of Yiddish theater. I know there are people working to revive the Yiddish language and theater, but does anyone today care about the music?

The absence of significant anti-semitism in America? You've got to be kidding! I grew up in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, and now I work in the Capitol of the USA, Washington, D.C., and I can tell you I frequently have been confronted by blatant, unabashed anti-Jewish bigotry at work and on the streets. This phenomenon does not seem to go away in this country, and certainly it is even worse in most other places of the world.

Of course, the anti-Jewish bigotry in this country can be subtle, as well as overt. We now even have presidential candidates who brazenly hope to shape government policy in accord with their Christian belief systems- without regard to minority religions and the first amendment's prohibition on government laws respecting religion. That this is proposed without comment in the media or public outrage is a sign that the constitutional rights of Jews and other religious minorities are in grave danger. It isn't a big step from civil rights erosion to severe repression and worse-- we supposedly learned those lessons in the 20th century, but I guess the lessons are being ignored out of sheer bigotry, or what we call "ethnocentrism."

The problem of Judaism is the problem of archaic religion in general. Judaism, for a variety of reasons, faces the crisis first. Is there any content to Judaism other than ethnic identity? Judaism began as ethnic identity and persists for the same reason. It is a religion in the Roman sense: the binding together of a group.

i watched it tonight and i found it really unremarkable.

The Jewish People have survived for over three thousand years.

(The earliest reference to Israel is from the funery stela of the Egyptian Pharoah Merneptah, now in the Cairo Museum, which dates to 1209 B.C.)

All other empires that persecuted the Jews, from the Arameans to the Moabites, from the Babylonians to the Assyrians to the Selucids, from the Romans to the Spanish Inquisition to the Nazis to Communists, have fallen.

Yet the Jewish People are still here.

Yes, they are very tiny: there are only 13.2 million Jews in the world, compared to 1.7 Billion Muslims and 2 Billion Christians. However, I believe they will continue to survive.

Today, every Jew by birth that is alive is not only a descendent of the people of ancient Israel, but a descendent of those who survived great persecution and pressure to convert over countless centuries.

This is a great privilage and an incredible legacy.

Yet, today many Jews are ignorant of their own heritage, from the Hebrew Bible itself to the archaeology of Israel, from the Dead Sea Scrolls to the great works of the Rabbinic Era.

Thus, in this country and others they are intermarrying, turning away from the sacrifices of their ancestors and casting out this heritage.

Pressured by societies that still hold true to the ideas of Replacement Theology--the theology that the Church, or the Islamic Ummah, has replaced the Jewish People as G-d's choosen--they often want to assimilate into the maintstream.

Without the knowledge of their history, the Jewish People cannot understand the religious roots of Replacement Theology and how it evolved into anti-Judaism and then anti-Semitism.

Thus, they simply, and tragically, internalize it.

So, will the Jewish People disappear over time?

No, it cannot be a coincidence that after 2,000 years of Exile the Jews have returned to their ancestral homeland to build a state, as it was predicted by Jeremiah and Isaiah.

Here is the future of the Jewish People, and as they have done for three millenium, they will--however small their numbers become--continue to survive and continue their ancestral legacy.

A Hasidic Rapper? Rapping in Hebrew, Yiddish or English? If he raps wearing his black suit, hat and hairstyle, he may just start a new global fashion trend with that classic and cool look.

And no mention of the Jewish film-makers and studio owners of the twenties, thirties and forties who shaped, disseminated and promoted the American Story, the American Look and the American Dream to the world? Goldwyn, Wagner, Meyer et al?

That is also an important contribution to American culture, though not necessarily Jewish in form and content, but towards "Americaness" and American identity. That is an achievement which is more immediate in forging American culture.

Obviously, in looking back, we found experiences and examples to identify with and to move forward with a renewed sense of group identification and refreshed self-identity.
