Failed church and state
Q: Was the Utah attorney general wrong to use Twitter, or religious language, to describe an execution? With all our technology, are we losing sight of our humanity? Should matters of life and death be reduced to a tweet?
Almost all the early Christian Fathers strongly opposed the death penalty, even when the church had become the official religion: on one occasion a bishop excommunicated an emperor for killing people...
Asking about the social etiquette of administering the death penalty is like inquiring after the etiquette surrounding rape or robbery with violence. What has happened to the conscience of a great nation with (some) deep Christian roots?

You wrote, "I respectfully suggest that perhaps state power isn't *good* for you guys, or maybe any religion."
I happen to believe that God-Incarnate, Jesus, agrees with you too, He did not become One of us, for us to set up a theocracy on earth.
You also wrote, "Which is why we have a secular Republic to begin with, though some will deny it."
I happen to believe that the seperation of church and state was Divinely inspired.
There is a difference between "secular" and "atheistic" Republic.
In a "secular", one may believe or not believe what one chooses to believe or not believe.
In an "atheistic", non-belief is mandated, even tho this is an absolute farce, just as in a "theistic", belief is mandated which is just as much a farce.
It seems pretty obvious by what some write on these postings that there are both "theists" and "atheists" that wish to impose "their will" upon others.
With the "seperation of church and state" and "freedom of religion" both, hopefully, should be denied the ability to impose "their" agenda on others.
You also wrote, "it does seem the Christian 'vote' is all for executing people,"
Just as not all "Pagans" fit into one "box", not all "Christians" fit into one box, sure does seem to be a "human thing" to try and "box" not only other "labels" in but also to "box" God in.
By the way, what is a "Christian"?
Is it someone that:
Believes that Jesus is the Saviour of ALL?
Believes that Jesus is God-Incarnate?
Believes that Jesus is a nice guy?
Believes that "Christianity" is about how we live down here and only that?
There are many, many ways that someone who would call themself a "Christian" would describe what it means to them personally to be a "Chrisitan", don't you think?
Take care, be ready.
Sincerely, Thomas Paul Moses Baum.

Actually, it's hardly exactly true that the Christian state-religion-Empire abolished the death penalty, or even the bloodsport of the Coliseum, as we're commonly taught to assume. Rather the opposite.
(With irony, it was Julian "the Apostate" ... a Pagan, who abolished the continuing horrors, which were reinstituted when a Christin emperor took over. And the bloodletting went on for.... (looking at watch... what's that, some eighteen centuries, give or take?)
Maybe Christianity's been against the death penalty when they aren't given the gallows, but, when state power comes along, it does seem the Christian 'vote' is all for executing people, frequently baying for blood with a passion.
I respectfully suggest that perhaps state power isn't *good* for you guys, or maybe any religion.
Which is why we have a secular Republic to begin with, though some will deny it.
