Words for the Week-- God's Forgiveness
With the forum discussing what it means to apologize and to ask for forgiveness, I thought it would be timely to look at what the Qur'an and the Prophet have to say about God's response to our repentance.
From the Qur'an:
5:39 But whoso repents after his wrongdoing and amends, lo! Allah will relent toward him. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
6:54 And when those who believe in Our revelations come to you, then say: Peace be unto you! Your Lord has prescribed for Himself mercy. Whoso of you does evil and repents of it and afterward does right, for him, surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
16:119 But verily your Lord -- to those who do wrong in ignorance, but who thereafter repent and make amends - you Lord, after this, is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
20:82 And lo! verily I am Forgiving toward the one who repents and believes and does good, and afterward walks aright.
39:53 Say: My worshippers who have transgressed against their own souls! Despair not of the mercy of Allah, Who forgiveth all sins. Lo! He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
And this lovely passage from the hadith:
“O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great at it.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
And another:
Abu Hurayrah states the Holy prophet said: "When Allah created the creatures He wrote in the Book which is with Him in the highest heaven: ‘My mercy shall prevail over my anger.’ (Bukhari and Muslim)
And finally because some folks (both Muslim and non-Muslim) seem to think that in Islam good deeds are traded like coins to buy you rewards in heaven:
The Prophet said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and rejoice, for no one's good deeds will put him in Paradise." The Companions asked, "Not even you O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Not even me unless Allah bestows His pardon and mercy on me."
Thus is it not our good deeds, nor even our repentance, but the sheer Grace of God that grants us Heaven. Good deeds make the world a better place, and repentence eases our hearts and purifies our souls -- both worthwhile goals in an of themselves.

Victoria,
As requested, I smelled the lilacs and my "perfumy" daffodils but this still did not clear the Islamic stench that comes over me when I continue to read about the 24/7 Sunni/Shiite Koranic driven blood bath. Please cleanse the Koran before its stench results in nuclear warfare.
A good start would be to admit that there is and never was any "pretty wingy things" aka angels, tinker bells, fairies. i.e. Mohammed (or his scribes) concocted the "angelic" revelations to mimic the OT and NT just like the scribes of the OT and NT concocted "angel" appearances to match those of the ancient Hittite and Canaanite religions.

Victoria and Like Thinkers,
How goes the cleansing/atonement of/for your "prophet" (dtub i.e. death to unbelievers)? You should start your own religion. Pray x times a day and skip over all the militant and anti-female passages of the Koran(asfa i.e as stolen from the ancients). What should you call it? Ostrichism!!

youre welcome here danny, what a gentle heart-
and obviously, pay no attention to the detractors
actually, im trying to find some website that gives all the ayats(verses) where the word peace or concept is expounded on- as im too lazy to read and find and type the way i used to -i know theyre in there, because they move mewhen im reading- but i never think to mark it(actually i used to tab everything i found interesting but then found my qur'an full of confusing tabs and then the tabs got filled with notes- it was crazy)
i really have to learn how to use this computer
also im easily distracted so computers are the anti- organizers for me as i can follow links endlessly- my capacity to be distracted is monumental- (not very resounding endorsement for scholarship, is it?)
my thing has always been developing lines of thinking and speculation as i read- but when asked to provide sources- i have to go back again- it ususally takes me a solid 3 times to consolidate a speculation-
heres what i know of islam-
it is always preferable to forgive-
but humans are ranging in great diversity as to their capacity-
so the qur'an is not written for perfect people, but to lead them in stages to th highest ideal-
there are minimums allowed in behavior- such as allowance of eye for eye but no more than an eye-
this is not the best course, it simply is allowed for those who dont want to try too strenuously-
right next to it is the injunction to forgive- but we have the choice- to forgive or seek revenge- forgiving is always the highest and best course- but this religion is for every human, not just the highly spiritually evolved-
because ultimately we have to be forgiving of ourselves, and not berate ourselves or demean ourselves or even hate ourselves- but realize were imperfect striving for betterment- forgive ourselves in a way that is easy on ourselves so that we keep hope to keep trying-
if there wasnt this attitude of self love and easiness on oneslef- id have given up long ago-
im not the most disciplined person- some new converts take to prayer with a bang and zealotry that is formidable-
i wanted to completely give yup many times because i didnt pray 5 times a day- maybe 2 or 3 or even 1 times a day at first-
but people told me- good! islam is easy- its not a punishment- so pray 1 time or 2 times a day- but keep THAT up- it was easy baby steps to start with and when that became comfortable i slowly added the others until i got up to 5- and then i started in on the sunnah (imitation of the actions of the Prophet(pbuh) prayers which are a few extra ones with the 5- then the supererogatory prayers! (extra voluntary and completely above and beyond) im not very regular about those at all-
if people had come down on me sternly and i felt like god was wagging his finger at me brusquely over a thousand years- id have given up for sure-
this idea you see people going on about our Prophet(pbuh) being a pedophiliac slathering murdering rage addict is just fear based paranoia and has nothing to do with islam (which the word itself is peace-

Part II of cleaning up the Koran since Pam et al apparently fear Islamic violence if they attempt it:
"6. To believe that Allah Most High has knowledge of everything from before-hand and that only that which He sanctions or wishes will occur."
This is invalidated by the natural/inherent/God-given gifts/attributes of the human race i.e. Free Will and Future.
As per the theologian Edward Schillebeeckx,
Church: The Human Story of God,
Crossroad, 1993, p.91 (softcover)
"We must give up a perverse, unhealthy and inhuman doctrine of predestination without in so doing making God/Allah the great scapegoat of history.”
"Nothing is determined in advance: in
nature there is chance and determinism; in the world of human activity there is possibility of free choices. Therefore the historical future is not known even to God/Allah; otherwise we
and our history would be merely a puppet show in which God holds the strings. For God, too, history is an adventure, an open history for and of men and women."
"7. To believe that Resurrection will definitely occur."
The spiritual resurrection occurs at each death. There will be no physical resurrection from common sense considerations i.e. Heaven is a spirit state i.e. no bodies to include those of Jesus, Mary, Moses etc.
"8. To believe in the existence of Heaven."
Acceptable but it exists only as a spirit state.
"9. To believe in the existence of Hell."
Maybe, maybe not. Some say if one dies is significant sin, that person’s soul will simply no longer exist since God/Allah does not tolerate imperfection in the Kingdom.
"10. To have love for Allah Most High."
Of course, just like there is love of all creatures, spiritual and living. Again there has to be an all-inclusive statement for Allah, i..e. aka God, Yahweh, Mother Nature, Jehovah.
Anyone else note the plagiarism that is so very apparent in the first ten Koranic beliefs?

Victoria,
Your "prophet" should be used as a good example?
The guy was a hallucinating illiterate with a militaristic agenda to plunder and loot the lands of the unbelievers. His Koranic scribes simply plagiarized passages from the OT, NT and the books of the ancients. You should use quotes from these books not the Koran.

A lecture by Dr Muzzamil Siddiqi.
Allah’s Forgiveness:
Allah the Almighty is the most Forgiving. There are many names of Allah given in the Qur’an. Some of which are related to His mercy and forgiveness. Let me mention some of these names.
Al Ghafoor (The Most Forgiving):
The most Forgiving. This name occurs in the Qur’an more than seventy times. There are other names from the same root. The meaning of the “ghafar” is to cover, to hide and from it comes the meaning “to excuse”, “to pardon”, “to remit” and “to forgive”. Allah the Almighty does all these things. In the Qur’an, it is mentioned that Allah does not forgive shirk (without repentance) but He may forgive every other sin for whomsoever He wills.
As Allah says in the Qur'an:
"Indeed! God does not forgive the sin of ascribing partners to Him, but He forgives anything else to whom He pleases, and whoever takes partners with God has gone astray into far error".Qur'an (4:116)
We must turn to Allah to seek His forgiveness.
Al-’Afuw:
This is another aspect of forgiveness. This name occurs in the Qur’an five times. Literally the word ‘Afuw means “to release” “to heal”, “to restore”, “to remit”. It means that Allah “ releases us from the burden of punishment due to our sins and mistakes”, “to restore our honor after we have dishonored ourselves by committing sins and making mistakes.” In some verses in the Qur’an both names: ‘Afuw and Ghafoor occur together.
Al-Tawwab:
This name means The Acceptor of repentance. This name of Allah is mentioned in the Qur’an about 11 times. Allah accepts the repentance of those who sincerely repent and turn to him for forgiveness. The word “Tawwab” gives the sense of “oft-returning” which means that Allah again and again accepts the repentance. We make sins and mistakes then we repent, He accepts our repentance. Then again we commit sins and make mistakes and when we repent, He again very kindly accepts us and gives us another chance. It is important to mention that we have to repent from our sins quickly and turn to God and ask for His forgiveness.
Al-Haleem:
The Clement. This name is mentioned fifteen times in the Qur’an. It means that Allah The Almighty is not quick to judgment. He gives us time. He forebears and is patient with us till we return to Him.
Al-Rahman and al-Rahim:
The most Merciful and Compassionate. These names are the most frequently mentioned in the Qur’an. Al-Rahman is mentioned 57 times and Al-Raheem is mentioned 115 times. Al-Rahman indicates that Allah’s mercy is abundant and plenty and Al-Raheem indicates that this is always the case with Allah.
In one of the prayers that the Prophet taught, he said:
“O Allah, You are most Forgiving One, You love to forgive, so forgive me.” (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah).
Thus we all need Allah’s mercy and forgiveness all the time.
“Those who avoid major sins and acts of indecencies and when they are angry they forgive.” Qur'an ( 42:37)
“The reward of the evil is the evil thereof, but whosoever forgives and makes amends, his reward is upon Allah.”Qur'an ( 42:40)
“If you punish, then punish with the like of that wherewith you were afflicted. But if you endure patiently, indeed it is better for the patient. Endure you patiently. Your patience is not except through the help of Allah."Qur'an (16:126-127)
In one Hadith Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said that Allah has commanded him with nine things. One of them he mentioned was “that I forgive those who do wrong to me.”
The Prophet (PBUH) was the most forgiving person. He was ever ready to forgive his enemies. When he went to Ta’if to preach the message of Allah, its people mistreated him, abused him and hit him with stones. He left the city humiliated and wounded. When he took shelter under a tree, the angel of Allah visited him and told him that Allah sent him to destroy the people of Ta’if because of their sin of maltreating their Prophet. Mohammad (PBUH) prayed to Allah to save the people of Taif, because what they did was out of their ignorance.
He (PBUH) said:
“O Allah, guide these people, as they did not know what they were doing.”
When he entered the city of Mekkah after the victory, the Prophet -peace be upon him- had in front of him some of his staunchest enemies. Those who fought him for many years, persecuted his followers and killed many of them. Now he had full power to pay back and punish them for their crimes and for what they did to him and to the Muslims. Instead the Prophet (PBUH) asked them:
“What do you think I shall do to you now?” They pleaded for mercy. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Today I shall say to you what Joseph (referring to Prophet Youssuf (PBUH) as mentioned in the Qur’an, (Youssuf 12:92) Prophet Youssuf (PBUH) said to his brothers, ‘No blame on you today. Go, you are all free.” Soon they all came and embraced Islam at his hands. He forgave even Hind who had caused the murder of his uncle Hamza -may Allah be pleased with him. After killing him she had his body mutilated and chewed his liver. When she embraced Islam, the Prophet even forgave her.
A very striking example of forgiveness we find in the Qur’an in reference to the most unfortunate event of “Slander of Sayeda Aicha” (one Prophet Mohammed's wives). Some hypocrites of Madinah tried unrightfully to put dirt on her noble character. One of the slanderers turned out to be Mistah, the cousin of ‘Aicha's father Abu Bakr’s. Abu Bakr -may Allah be pleased with him- used to give financial help to this young man. After he slandered his daughter, Abu Bakr vowed not to help him any more. But Allah reminded Abu Bakr and through him all the Believers saying:
“Let not those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want and those who migrated in the path of Allah. Let them forgive and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Indeed Allah is oft-Forgiving, most Merciful.”Qur'an (24:22)
Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) came out of his home and said, “Yes, indeed, I want Allah’s forgiveness. He not only continued to help and support Mistah but he gave him more. Islam emphasises justice and
sorry for the length-

Pam,
Your "prophet and his Koran needs to be cleansed before using any Koranic verses for guidance.
As noted previously: From "The 77 Branches of Faith is a collection compiled by Imam Bayhaqi. In it, he explains the essential virtues that reflect true faith (iman) through related Qur’anic verses and Prophetic sayings."
The cleansing process, Part 1.
"1. Belief in Allah"
No problem but "aka as God, Yahweh, Zeus, Jehovah, Mother Nature, etc." should be added.
"2. To believe that everything other than Allah was non-existent. Thereafter, Allah Most High created these things and subsequently they came into existence."
No problem but evolution and the Big Bang cannot be ignored and the "akas" for Allah should be included.
"3. To believe in the existence of angels."
A major item to delete. Angels/devils are the mythical creations of ancient civilizations, e.g. Hittites, to explain/define natural events, contacts with their gods, big birds, sudden winds, protectors during the dark nights, etc. No "pretty/ugly wingy thingies" ever visited or talked to Mohammed, Jesus, Mary or Joseph or Joe Smith. Today we would classify angels as fairies and "tinker bells". Modern devils are classified as the demons of the demented.
"4. To believe that all the heavenly books that were sent to the different prophets are true. However, apart from the Quran, all other books are not valid anymore."
Another major item to delete. There are no books written in Heaven just as there are no angels to write/publish/distribute them. The Koran, OT, NT etc. are simply books written by humans for humans.
Prophets were invented by ancient scribes typically to keep the uneducated masses in line. Today we call them fortune tellers.
Prophecies are also invalidated by the natural/God/Allah gifts of Free Will and Future.
"5. To believe that all the prophets are true. However, we are commanded to follow the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) alone."
Mohammed spent thirty days fasting in a hot cave before his first contact with Allah aka God etc. via a "pretty wingy thingy". Common sense demands a deletion of #5. #5 is also the major source of Islamic violence i.e. turning Mohammed's "fast, hunger-driven" hallucinations into horrible reality for unbelievers.
