WISE Muslim Women

This past weekend in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, some 200 Muslim women from all over the globe gathered to network, share stories, and brainstorm under the auspices of WISE -- the Women's Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality, a program of the ASMA society run by Daisy Khan and her husband Imam Feisal Rauf. Coming from such disparate locales as Kenya, Afghanistan, Morocco, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, the U.S. and Canada, various European countries, Egypt, Turkey, and Indonesia, the women were united in their desire for equality and in their belief that the Qur'an can serve as the basis for that equality.

Some of the hot-button topics included early marriage, freedom in selecting marriage partners, domestic violence and safeguarding women's rights in divorce. Other programs focused on poverty and helping women become self-sustaining through microloan and skill building programs. Issues of violence against women in war-torn countries, and health concerns facing women, particularly reproductive health and choices, were also raised during the conference.

Several initiatives were launched during the conference. The Muslim Women's Fund will provide grants to women and programs devoted to enchancing women's equality. The WISE Muslim Women's Shura Council launched its Jihad against Violence: Muslim women's struggle for Peace, a campaign aimed both at domestic violence and issues of violence against women in greater society. WISE also announced the opening of its web portal, which will act as a resource center for information sharing, networking and communication with the various WISE programs.

Among the more interesting developments since the innaugural WISE conference in 2006 was a shift away from the term 'equity' to 'equality.' According to WISE leaders, the feedback at the initial conference was that Muslim women don't want equity, or parity, they want equality with men and nothing less. And not only do they want it, they are working for it daily.

Much of the conference programming was devoted to the stories of Muslim women from around the globe who are doing just that. Stories like that of Nadia al-Sakkaf, the first female executive editor for an Arab newspaper, who turned an article about underage marriage into a successful campaign to institute a law requiring the minimum marriage age of 17 for Yemeni girls. Or the Pakistani lawyer, Shahina Akbar, who, upon discovering that all of her rights in her state mandated marriage contract had been x'd out and that this was a common practice, set about on a campaign to educate Pakistani girls of their rights under the law. Or Musdah Muliah, woman from Indonesia who worked with religious leaders to prepare sermons that fostered women's empowerment in the family, in school, on the job and with regard to reproductive health.

The unifying thread of all the stories told that weekend was the desire for respect from family and community, and for the right for women to make important life decisions for themselves.

Wow! I sure had to scroll down to write this kind of benign comment. I just wanted to share my joy at this whole WISE conference and the outcome...i did not know what the roots were, for your groundbreaking ijtihadic 'positional' work,. But i trust the group process and its reverence for Allah.

I worshipped, very lowkey presence, jumaah only, at the Broadway Mosque for several years. This was after the moderate, inclusive Islamic Center in Queens that i attended for the first 8 years that i was muslim was given by a US Court decision to a group of extremely conservative and rigidly exclusive muslim group which miltantly prescribed the chador and was against such things as Sunni - Shiah intermarriage and was mind-numbingly hard hearted...
I feel so fortunate to have found after the next many years visiting mosques on friday all over NYC in a sort of diaspora, a few years before i left NYC, the Broadway Mosque where Daisy and Faisal made all welcome, valued..Bookstore also good.

Many blessings upon you all

Even though i am not a Woman (Thank G-D?) that Ladys like Tsipi Livini of Israel, Condalezza Rice (not G.W. Bush, a Male) but Laura Bush of U.S., Hillary Clinton, maybe Sara Palin, both King Abullah's (Saudi & Jordan's) Wives and the Wive of Aegypts leader or designated; Lebans, Syria, Iran, Turkey, Palistine leaders wife like Mr. Abbas's etc.. [Even for a Day or 2 or 3] should sit at a Round Table instead-of-Mocho-Men and HASH things out between them for HUMANITYS SAKE so to spaketh!

I believe that real/genuine & everlasting PEACE ON EARTH (not only in Mid East) is only possible when "OUR Lady's", not via "OUR Gents" work TOGETHER (in Private so Muslom Ladys dont have to wear Head Scarves in a Lady only Forum. How about Puting together a LADY-ONLY "Peace-Exchange" & Meet in USA Virginia or..?

Point: Theres 192 Members Nationals in Earths U.nited N.ations. 95% are MALE. Yet Theres 4-major competing Abrahamic Religions & there's 4-Vedic competing Religions; all are MOCHO-MAN "DOMINATIONED"!

So, for a Global-xChange Why not, swap, For a Day or 2 or even 3 with their Male Husbands (Wives of elected Secularists & & Monarchs & Theocrats; Note, they have to be over 18 not 10 years old) and negotiate Real-Issues involving, not G-D or god(s) but

Focus on Reality of the day/Month/Year near-future with such Questions thereto never asked/Entertained by there Men before & Possibly have/get firm Answers to SOCIETYS Needs or ills via a Good-Philosophy of sorts involving "Modern-Solutions" to Cure ancient lores & Superstitions! Only the WO-MAN of the World, as Wives of Male-Leaders for a Day or 2 or 3 in order to can-Cleanup after thier MEN? Not only Kindas!

Time for the Ladys to fetch the Bacon & the Men to Clean house, Cook, & Raise the Kids. Note: Many of These Male Leaderships wives do-not know how to Cook nor Clean since they have servants, Nanny/maids, Buttlers, chauffers etc.. Maybe they should lay-off them folks and swap instead too?

As a Wise Woman, You should be one of the Woman Attending one of these up and Coming "Womans Internatioal Learning League" [WILL], A "PEACE-Exchange" between Muslom-Male-Leaders Wives" or Whatever we call/Name such an endeavour.

Pamela,

I have shared my story, and here is another. The EU nations have issued a statement to European Jews detailing the measures they should take to protect themselves against European Muslims. Once again the EuroChristians have abandoned the European Jews to racists. What price oil?

Of course, European Muslims face all but institutionalized racism from the EuroChristians, whom they don't fight back against because Christians comprise the majority, and those EuroChristians don't play games, in case you haven't noticed.

So the Muslim men displace their anger onto Jews, men and women, fed by Muslim antisemitism, as well as onto Muslim women.

Any comments? Do Jews have equal rights to live?

Another story
Two years ago, when I was in Israel, an Israeli Muslim was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison for having murdered his sister: an honor killing. (Btw., one out of every three Palestinian murders is an honor killing, usually committed by a brother for his sister's crime of having been raped.) The girl had been raped by another Israeli Muslim, who was given the same prison sentence. There is no capital punishment in Israel. Only Adolf Eichman was executed. No one else. Not even terrorists who murdered little children, shooting at point-blank range, who blew up school buses, etc. Not executed.

The result of the sentencint? A massive Muslim demonstration against the Israeli governement for sentencing the murdering brother to jail.

More stories
Pakistan: A man married his daughter to a tree. It made all the papers. Nothing could be done.

A man raped and killed a little girl. He was ultimately caught. I was there when this happened. The nation went into an uproar. He was caught and executed.

Pakistan is interesting. Virulently antisemitic; in fact, worse than ever now. Sexist, beyond credibility, but somehow light keeps trying to get in.

A young Christian woman married against her family's wishes, and became pregnant. Her relatives caught her and aborted the fetus, themselves. She fled to safety, alone. She survived, will survive. My friends went ballistic.

Pamela,

When I was a girl, a family friend, Ismael, was murdered in front of me by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard while he was "being taken into custody." His blood spattered on my clothes. Do you think that was right?

My family had roots in Iran at least as far back as the 12th century, yet we were forced to flee in the middle of the night. Our survival was uncertain.

Do you think that was right, Pamela? Equality, Pamel? Equality?

Why, Pamela, does the US have relations with Nazi Saudi Arabia, Nazi Egypt, etc.?

Oh, and Pamela? Precisely how are Palestinians treated in SA, in Egypt, etc?

Is any of this right, Pamela? Equality?
Please.

Pamela,

Do you think that it is right that the Muslim nations of Egypt, Tunisia, Morrocco, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Iran, etc., are all but Judenrein?

Do you think it is right that there are now approximately four (4) Jews living in Egypt, the remainder having been forced to leave, physically deported, some killed, etc., as is true of the rest of the Middle East?

These Arab and Iranian Jews, Pamela, did not decide to leave, or wish to leave. Some of them traced their lineage in these regions to before there was such a thing as Islam.

Do you think it is right, Pamela, that their property has been seized, that those remaining cannot get an education, cannot get jobs, etc.?

What do you think, Pamel, of the antisemitsm that is part of the school curricula in these nations? Of the anti-Jewish racism in the newspapers, media, movies, etc.?

Do you think this is right?

Something on: The "HADITH MANIFESTO" (Religion on steroids) of the ISLAMIC commininity, unlike the "COMMUNIST MANIFESTO" (Atheism, not-Secularism, on Steroids) of the INTERNATIONAL Community.

Today, All Moderate DRUZE, SUFI, MUSLOM Kids/Gens through their Space Faring thinking minds will eventually Replace their parents, thus their Communities Religious Dominance against Them.

Meaning THEY (Todays or morrows Islamic Young Kids/Generations) will be weaned-away, not from the QURAN so much, but Away and forever from their Parents Sharia's Rules via their "HADITH MANIFESTO".

They only need to see that STATE sponsored Laws for MORALITY Protections, in ones Community/Umma/Tribe.., is 'the right-Choice' in order to escape Laws based on Religious-Rule!

This is the "Battle", if You Will. Finally they (Future-Bound Kids/GENs) will have a say so (Voice w/Independence) in the natural words, "NO" and or "YES".

IRAN is a Microcosim of What is to Come. NO Theocrat-Government, based on any religious [as if MORALITY?] Laws, can withstand the "LAWS OF NATURE".

So "NATURES-MANIFESTO" is Superior to any "Hadith-Manifesto" or "Caste-System-Manifesto" or "Halakah-Manifesto" includes the "Apartheid-Manifestos" etc..

The Holy Cosmic UNIVERSE (a 'Constitution' in its own rightousness) along with its Glorious Natural-LAWS (tantamount to a Universes 'Clauses') is the real Written Laws. And the MORALITY of such a natural awareness is that Man does no longer need any Sharia (Religious Laws) to Live By.

This means that inevitably this Planet's inhabitants will get-off someone elses old-time religious yoke/folk stories.

SO, The Winner on EARTH is; SECULAR-LAW, no more RELIGIOUS-LAW that, in time, will prevail!

Less Religion, Less Nation-States, Less Currencies, less Population Explosion or encroachment means the Probablitity of Genuine Long Term or Perpetual PEACE and HAPPYNESS on Holy Earth.

So Procrastination is our ENEMY and TIME is our best Friend!

Yes WE will Earthly Citizens! Yes WE can and WE Dear will Earthlings!

Until men wear something comparable to hijab, there will never be equality in the Muslim world. Muslim women will always be set apart from others. Always. Isn't that the point of the hijab? Isn't the point of the hijab to serve the ego of the husband? Isn't the point of the hijab to single out women as being "different" or in the case of the three people I saw just yesterday- two women wearing hijabs long pants and one man wearing shorts and a tee shirt on a very hot day. Why were these women suffering in the heat and the man wasn't? This is not being "different", this is being treated as an inferior.

To this day, I still cannot accept the fact that these women are not equal and , until they are who they really are and not who their masters wish them to be, they will never be equal.

And Last week, Adding Insult To Injury, an Muslom Indonesian Actress was Sharia'd unjustly too for having a Brewski (Beer) in a Tavern/Pub. Brother OBAMA should invite Kartika Sari to the white house for a "Beer" instead of Professor Gates or P.O. Crowley. CHEERS anyone?

"Last week, a Sharia or religious court sentenced Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, to six strokes of the cane and a fine of 5,000 ringgit (1,412 dollars) after she pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol in eastern Pahang state last year..."

What happens to a woman who openly smokes in Public or private under Sharia?

For the World to Accept Islam, Islam must be 1st Adopt to the SECULAR RULE OF LAW as in COMMON LAW. MORALY for Moral Reasons based on secular "MORAL-GROUNDS", both for Family & Future. Private and Civil and Criminal. Commerce/finance, Contract and Local Laws too.

Ladys and Gentlemen, another case for NO more SHARIA on Earth please.

See the PATTERN? ITs in the "PATTERNS"

This GAZAN victim of a "Wise Muslom" Woman/Mother should be used by the OBAMA Administration as evidence , for all the World to see as another EXAMPLE that "SHARIA"-Rule (Religious Law as if be MORAL?) in GAZA or elsewhere, on Earth, shall not be used anymore Except for "SECULAR" Rule by Constitutional and International Laws together with the Secular West Bankians.

The Palistinian Constitution (ISLAM/Allah based) needs to be revisited for a Moraly-better SECULAR-OVERHAUL, or atleast chock-full of "Non-Religious GUARANTEES & certain inalienable RIGHTS" in the New Landa of Palistine, Parallel to each others gods, but not Equal to Israels Economy and Might because of the "Proxy American Factor(PAF)"

Michelle OBAMA, Hillary, Condalezza, Palin, Pam Taylor and others Anybody out there?

I attended recently a session in which a Pakistani group (including both men and women)gave a presentation with slides how incidents of acid throwing by men have taken place in that country.

All this is based on the paradigm of inferiority of women as opposed to men.

Wake Up, Muslims. Islam does not profess inferiority of women, Muslim men do.

This paradigm must change.

Reform comes only when honest debates about discrimination and injustices take place.

There is a lot of injustice against women in Latin America. Honor killings take place there as well.

In the West, young women have to display their bodies to attract men. Young women constant worry that their husbands will leave them soon after the aging process begins to show. They try to look "younger" by using wrinkle creams and various other methods.

Muslims should recognize that despite Islam grants equality of sexes, many forms of subtle discriminations still exist. Finding a match for a girl is a lot harder in some Muslim societies.

In some Muslim countries the kings and the princes(es) marry girls for a single night. Then they divorce them. This is makking a mockery of both the spirit and the tenets of Islam.

No question, reform is needed.

In the Islamic-World or such Communities/Umma that it is common practice for Woman to be forced into marriage through intervention or Parental-Choice.

But it has come to my attention, that Divorced Muslom Woman are treated, in their Umma, as Secondary or "Used" citizenz. And that divorced Woman are more likely to become "Concubines" in a multi-spouse marrage settings. In other words for Sexual Pleasure; not LOVE?

But then again it seems that divorced Muslom Woman have more plutonic relations, meaning divorced muslom woman can choose a mate of their own, visavis, with out intervening parents or siblings or theologan.

Interesting Question, What really happens to the Mass of "Divorced [Islamic] Woman" (used) in the majority of Muslom Nations?

Are divorced Musloms free to freely marry again, but someone of their own choosing instead of having no choice the 2nd time, or 3rd time, around?

Millions of Muslim women around the world are doctors, nurses, academics, teachers, professors, lawyers, solicitors, engineers, social workers, policewomen, army officers and even pilots. They are leading politicians in many countries and even became prime ministers.

It is perfidious thing to say that Muslim women are restricted and housebound and maidservants when as a matter of fact, they are ones who are at the wheel and driving force in the running of their families and the households. They are far more empowered than the non-Muslims think and in many cases are the decision-makers, and good ones. Muslim women are participating fully and equally in the construction of Islamic societies and contributing positively in the development of their countries. They are respected; have their dignified status and are not considered as objects of bare flesh, lust and financially profitable for TV commercials. In Islam, a woman could achieve any thing in life except that Allah did not bestow upon her the prophet hood because it involved her biologic and physiological restraints as well as she was not created for tasks that demanded hard trials of life.

Finally, I would like to say that Islam demands that a woman should remain a reasonable being as everyone else. It does not expect her to become either an angel or a demon. If non-Muslims wish to compare or contrast her position with other civilizations or legal systems, one should look into all facts and not merely isolated practices as wearing a burqa or hijab. In fact, with regard to certain aspects of morality, Islam is more rigid and more puritan than other systems and non-Muslim societies. Since Islam attaches particular importance to morality, it suppresses promiscuity by every means.

Muslim women are entitled to enjoy and exercise those rights which are considered to be the privilege of men as Islam treats both men and women at par as far as their rights are concerned. In the Koran it is mentioned that if women have duties, they have equal rights also. Both sexes have distinct roles but their duties and rights regarding marriage, divorce, inheritance, property, litigation, family matters etc have been defined in clear-cut terms and transgression is forbidden.
