Faith on Campus: Student video contest

Since we launched On Faith three years ago this month, we have been looking for ways to connect with college students across the country, to hear how their beliefs impact their lives and their views of the future. Finally we found a wonderful partner to begin this conversation with us: Patheos.com, whose founder Leo Brunnick is as committed as we are to creating a dialogue across all faiths and no faiths on religion and spirituality.

Today we are launching a "Faith On Campus" video challenge. We are inviting students over the age of 18 to share their faith (or lack of it) in a video contest. "Faith on Campus" will be open for video submissions from Nov. 12, 2009 through April 15, 2010. During that time, students can also promote their entries and encourage votes through the end of January.

The winning video submission will be awarded a cash prize of $2,500. Three runner-up prizes valued at $1,000 will also be awarded for the following three categories:

1. Why I am a [fill in your faith]
2. How I live my beliefs on campus
3. Rituals and practices of my faith

I will be one of the judges along with;

• William A. Graham, Dean, Harvard Divinity School and On Faith panelist
• Craig Detweiler, Pepperdine University
• Rabbi Brad Hirschfield, Blogger, Author and On Faith panelist
• Eboo Patel, Interfaith Youth Core and On Faith panelist

People sometimes joke about college students staying up all night, discussing "the meaning of life." But isn't that the most important question anyone can ask? It has been said that "an unexamined live is not worth living." That may be taking it a bit far, but an examined life, especially if one begins early, is surely richer and more fulfilling.

We hope "Faith on Campus" will encourage students across the country to examine their lives and beliefs and share that with us. We also hope they have fun doing it. We have no doubt we all will learn a great deal from them.

We will be reminding you about the contest from time to time in the next few weeks and we will be showing the winning videos in videos in February.
