The notorious Pastor Terry Jones

So Pastor Terry Jones has decided not to do it. Unless, of course, he does it after all. The burning hasn't been cancelled but "suspended." When Jones announced he was going to burn the Koran on 9/11 he became an instant worldwide media celebrity. The pastor of a 30-member Florida church, the Dove World Outreach Center, Jones must have thought he had died and gone to heaven. Never had this author of "Islam is of the Devil" had so much attention. And it was so easy.... Just say you're going to burn the Koran and look what happens!

But it gets better. After being implored by religious and political leaders from all over the globe, he announced Thursday evening that he had decided not to have the burning. Why? Well, because Imam Feisal Rauf, the founder of the Cordoba House had told him that he would agree not to build a mosque at Ground Zero and had agreed to meet with Jones in New York on Saturday. And also because he had had "a sign from God." But wait!

Imam Feisal says it ain't so. He says he never spoke to Jones, never agreed not to build the Islamic Center and never agreed to meet with him.

Jones says he was "clearly, clearly lied to."

And he is now saying that he is reconsidering his decision not to burn the Korans.

This guy, Jones, is good. Rarely has anyone been able to manipulate the media and keep the story rolling the way he has. It wasn't enough that he became an overnight sensation by announcing his intentions to offend. He wasn't even satisfied when General David Petraeus said that the "images of the burning of a Koran would understandably be used by extremists in Afghanistan - and around the world - to inflame public opinion and incite violence."

At first, Jones says he got the idea for the book burning from those who had a "Draw Mohammad Day" protest against the condemnation of a cartoonist who drew the prophet. Drawing a picture of Mohammad, though insulting to many Muslims, was a bit too tame for our boy. No sir. He was going to go for the big time: Think how much publicity he would get if he burned the sacred text!

So he announced it and there he was all over the media. What a bonanza. His congregation swelled to 50 members. But who cares about the numbers. He was getting major exposure. And the more he insisted he was going to go through with it, the more attention he is got.

Hillary Clinton, in her Q and A after a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations talked about the burning being "outrageous, aberrational" and a "disgraceful plan to get the world's attention. Everyone knew that this was a hot story, and nobody better than Pastor Jones.

Petraeus also warned that "even the rumors have sparked demonstrations" and warned that if the actual burning took place "the safety of our soldiers would be put in jeopardy and the accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

It only got better for Pastor Jones. Both New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Obama White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs denounced him. President Obama pleaded with him to listen to his "better angels." Secretary of Defense Robert Gates called him up to ask him to stop. UPDATE: Friday, Obama added that his appeal to Jones did not 'elevate' the pastor, but was necessary because "in the age of the internet, this is something that can cause us profound damage."

Now that he is getting the attention of world leaders he's even more pumped. "We (note the royal "we") think it's time to turn the tables and instead of possibly blaming us for what could happen, we put the blame on where it belongs. On the people who would do it."

There is no question that if Pastor Jones does end up having a Koran burning, there will be consequences. As an extremist himself, he understands only too well how to incite other extremists. One Muslim cleric announced that if he goes through with it that all Americans must die, never mind that those Muslims who may retaliate will be living up to the negative stereotypes of Muslims. There are those who would argue that though burning the Koran might seem abhorrent to Muslims, it is still not murder. Yet others have made the point that historically burning books leads to burning people.

The Islamophobes and Muslim bashers in the country have had their hatred fueled by Muslim extremists. Many of these people consider themselves good Christians. And though polls show a majority of people are against the burning, it could be a real shocker for them to see what extremism looks like from the other side. How will Pastor Jones feel if people are harmed because of the Koran burning? Pleased? Vindicated? After all, for him, it will be a self fulfilling prophecy.

If even one American is killed because of Pastor Jones's actions, how will they feel about a Christian extremist imperiling the lives of their own countrymen? It is sad that one narrow minded, exclusive and destructive man with so few followers could wrongly appear to represent a country and a religion. Yet that is undoubtedly how it will be perceived by many abroad.

The question is, after his first taste of the bright lights, what caused him to back off, even for a few hours? Clearly he never had an agreement with Imam Feisal. Plus, Jones changed the reason why he was going to burn the Koran's from "exposing Islam for what it is" to one where he was simply trying to convince the imam to move the Islamic Center. My guess is he overplayed his hand. He got carried away with his power over the media and his success. He didn't name his church The Dove WORLD Outreach Center for nothing. He wanted a seat at the table. If he does get a meeting with the imam or any other major religious or political figures he will certainly be encouraged in his egregious quest for fame. Just imagine how many fundamentalists are out there right now kicking themselves and saying, "Why didn't I think of that?"

There is nothing uglier than religious bigotry. Pastor Jones is the face of that bigotry. Everyone who agrees with him about Islam should take a good look in the mirror. It is true that, under the first amendment he has a right to burn the Korans. That's the same first amendment, however, that says a mosque can be built near Ground Zero.

Maybe it will make him even more famous. Maybe it will keep him on the front pages of newspapers, magazines and TV screens.

This could well be a tipping point for the viral media if a tiny little story of no consequence ends up causing riots, devastation and bloodshed.

Even if he doesn't go through with it this time, he's already achieved the notoriety he has sought. He's not going to go away. He's clearly addicted. When the publicity dies down, he'll simply threaten to burn them again and everyone will take the bait.

Mrs Ben Bradlee has obviously learned her lessons in arrogance well. Her snide, condescending screed reveals that behind the facade of a section about "faith," she's no more than a common polemicist -- as behind the facade of the Religion of Peace, there lies nothing but Nazism in religious trappings.

Terry Jones might be trailer trash to you of the superior sensibilities, but guess what? He's right about Islam. And you, Sally Quinn, for all the pretensions your WaPo pulpit affords, are no more than one of Islam's useful idiots.

The pastor wouldn't have an international audience without the news media promoting him.

Further, in Saudi Arabia non-Wahabbi versions of the Koran are confiscated and shredded...then probably burned.

Interesting how Rev Wright who "GDed America" was never referred to as notorious. As a matter of fact the leftist Media of Collusion tried to cover up Rev Wright and Obama's 20 year association with him. .

On Sept. 11,2001 JIHADISTS burned down the WTC’s,Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania along with 3000 Americans. America and the world were shocked but many Muslims danced in the streets. A radical pastor in Florida wants to burn a book and it is the American public that is outraged. The FBI is sent down right away. Where was the FBI while American troop's funerals were being protested by the so-called Christian Church. No one will be dancing in the streets if the pastor does this. One thing is for sure many of us are not going to be crying over it either!!! Already though he is being threatened and the American flag is being burned. The media spins the story as usual . It is all about the PASTOR!!! He has been in the news LONGER than the Fort Hood JIHADIST was!!! The real story is about JIHADIST and the SHARIA LAW MUSLIMS. Someone and hopefully it is not one of our troops will be killed today in the name of ALLAH and SHARIA LAW!! Where is the POLITICALLY CORRECTNESS when you need it from the media?? JIHADIST and SHARIA LAW come from the KORAN. Not some pastor in Florida, not the Palestine State issue or any other Western policy. Imam Rauf and the RADICAL MUSLIM’s want it to become a “HOLY WAR” What the pastor is doing is playing right into their hands. Great soundbites for the Muslims to use to preach JIHAD!!!

Rauf’s statement said. “We are not going to toy with our religion or any other. Nor are we going to barter. We are here to extend our hands to build peace and harmony.” LMAO!!!! You are doing a GREAT job of it!!!! We see right through you!! Either you are afraid of the RADICAL’S or you are one of them!!! You want PEACE and HARMONY then say the Mosque will be moved out of respect for the victims of the WTC’s. This JIHAD started way before Sept.11,2001.

Always Remember “The Peacekeepers” 241 Marines KIA on Oct.23,1983 in Beirut,Lebanon while they slept by an Iran backed Hezbollah JIHADISTS!! and all the others killed by your PEACEFUL religion!!

Oh, I think I know what made Jones change his mind. I'll bet this item, which appeared in the Gainesville Sun a few hours before Jones had a change of heart (I don't mean to imply here he HAS a heart; it's just a figure of speech):

"The city of Gainesville ... will send Terry Jones ... a bill for the estimated tens of thousands of dollars it will cost to police the area if the church goes through with its plan...."

@nychap44: Sure about that? When the Christians really took over in 380 they made illegal ALL other faiths (courtesy of Emperor Theodosius I and his De Fide Catolica). Other than the persecuted Jews, adherents of all other religions were effectively made criminals.

Per you, the Muslims were far more tolerant.

And who burned the Great Library of Alexandria? Not the Muslims. The Christians burned the ancient world's greatest repository of knowledge. The new movie Agora lays it all out.

BTW, when the Catholic Crusaders conquered Jerusalem in 1099, they massacred everyone, including Christians. As devout Catholics, they knew that Orthodox Christians were heretics who needed to be cleansed from the Earth. Wonder what the good Rev. Jones thinks of Catholics. Burn them at the stake, perhaps?

So as far as religious persecution is concerned, the Christians have a huge lead over the Muslims--especially when it comes to genocides. Your boy Herr Hitler showed us what Christian anti-semitism is all about.

As for history, Christians started it, and achieved heights of bloodshed never matched by the Muslims.

Looks like the Muslims started it.
In the year 637 the armies of Islam lead by the Caliph Omar conquered the city of Jerusalem, the center of the Christian world and a magnet for Christian pilgrims. The city's Muslim masters exhibited a certain level of religious tolerance. No new churches were to be built and crosses could not be publicly displayed outside church buildings, but the pilgrims were allowed to continue their treks to the holiest shrines of Christendom (the pilgrims were charged a toll for access). The situation remained stable for over 400 years. Then, in the latter part of the 11th century, the Turks swarmed westward out of Central Asia overrunning all that lay in their path. Jerusalem fell to them in 1076. The atmosphere of tolerance practiced by the followers of Omar was replaced by vicious attacks on the Christian pilgrims and on their sacred shrines in the Holy City. Reports of robberies, beatings, killings, degradation of holy sites and the kidnapping for ransom of the city's patriarch made their way back to Europe. To the Europeans the Holy Land was now in the smothering grip of the Infidel and something must be done.

Whichever it is, we do have to apply the same rules. If Jones would have been responsible for harm to our troops then Bloomberg and Rauf ARE responsible for the harm to the taxi driver.

Within a year or two, the most Reverend Terry Jones will convert to Islam and become an imam. He probably cares squat about the Koran, or even Matthew, but will easily succumb to some friendly chats with Muslim leaders and opportunities to raise money and attract congregants. Think of it: multiply the membership from 50 to 5,000, plus all public attention and the wet-hanky repentence.

Honestly, if that spectacle did anything to make Afghans think better of America, it might be worth the hokum. But it probably won't work out that way. There will always be something to incite rage. Afghanistan has its rant-mongers, just as we have ours.

Skillful hucksters manipulate the media all the time ... all of you whether in print, broadcast, or Internet, are cowards when it comes to ignoring the next 'balloon boy' story. That is shameful. However, this particular lunatic taps white bigotry, and that made it viral. A few months ago it was Hispanic immigrants, before that it was coded phrases about blackness. We whites are 'losing' our nation to diversity, never mind that is how we had the power in the 20th century, tapping into diversity. But bigotry comes from fear, and nothing is more fearful than loss of perceived power. There will be more balloon-boy stories, and the media will fill up bandwidth and airtime with blanket coverage. But nothing sells quite like polarization.

The change will come when some major outlet says not a word about the next balloon-boy incident. Just silence while they cover the news. That will really be something.

More than 4,000 Americans died to bring freedom to the largely Muslim people of Iraq. More than 1,000 Americans have died to bring freedom to the largely Muslim people of Afghanistan.

There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for his brother.

Thus, if the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were, as we have been told, were to bring freedom to those people, and we have died for them, then they are our brothers and sisters.

If that is true, then this proposed act of rank offense planned in Florida is aimed not at our enemies, but at our brothers.

He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind.

The pastor then, proposes an act that would actually put him on the side of America's enemies -- those that wish to defile and dishonor the deaths of our men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan and those of our brothers and sisters that we went there to liberate.

That is why his act is offensive -- not merely because he seeks to childishly destroy a book some hold sacred -- but, because his act dishonors the people for which Americans gave their last full measure of devotion to save.

Our men and women may not have all held the Koran sacred, but they died so that those people of good who do might live in freedom.

The burning of the Koran, then, spits in the eyes of our war dead and desecrates their graves, which are hallowed only by the fact that they fought and died to regain the freedom God gave to each human being, regardless of their religion.

Based on this guy's MO and past here and in Germany, it seems more than plausible that HE is lying about the conversation he had with the Imam just so that he can then say - "They lie! They don't keep their promises".

In my mind, it is very unlikely that any concessions would have been made (or even falsely promised) with respect to the NYC mosque/outreach center to appease this moron.

If he burns the Quran, I think its time to start looking for missing bolts on his license plate, start investigating his past tax returns, etc. He is a punk who obviously loves the attention he is getting (which surely won't be thwarted through pleas to the press).

The same could be said for thousands of so-called pastors, preachers and speakers of The Word.

While it may bear resemblance to religion, they are merely businessmen and women who instead of selling patent medicines or vegetable peelers peddle storytelling of a perfumed heaven and a sulfurous hell.

The day they flew the planes into buildings to kill as many people as they could without any outcry from the muslim world was the day I decided to treat them all the same. If we bow down to every threat for cartoons, books and book burnings we are giving up and they all laugh behind our backs. pull our troops out and let them wipe each other out because muslims hate other muslims just as much as non muslims the shiites hate everybody. We should pull out with the proviso that if we are ever attacked again we will turn that country into a sheet of glass. It's time to man up in this country and stop letting these so called terrorist push us around. Enough is enough!!

The notorious Pastor Terry Jones

Interesting how Rev Wright who "GDed America" was never referred to as notorious. As a matter of fact the leftist Media of Collusion tried to cover up Rev Wright and Obama's 20 year association with him. .
If Jones is in the news a lot, look in the mirror left wing media of collusion who LOVE fanning the flames...

Protecting our troops?
The leftist Democrats want to protect the American Troops? ROFL
They never cared about this before, trashing the military continuously, General Betrayus, kicking recruiters off campuses, giving sound bit support to the enemy:

“On January 10, 2007, the night the surge was announced, Obama declared, "I am not persuaded that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq are going to solve the sectarian violence there. In fact, I think it will do the reverse

*Kerry trashed the troops…”Kerry then told the students that if they were able to navigate the education system, they could get comfortable jobs – “If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq,”

*Harry “The Iraq war is lost” Reid: Republicans need to stop rooting for failure

*Durbin accuses our troops of running a Nazi death camp.

*Murtha convicts troops at Haditha even before a trial.
BTW, they were all released after an investigation..

"General Betray Us", from the Obama supporters at move on

* “The blabbermouths at the NY Times chose to disclose classified information in a pathetically obvious bid to move the Iraqi elections off the front pages, “ And to help sabotage the Patriot Act reauthorization.” The Patriot Act was designed to keep up with technology to monitor disposable cell phones used by terrorists at a time when the existence of America was in jeopardy and it had a sunset clause

In Clinton speech, "I loath the military"

All future Airline/Bus/Train Hi-Jackers will be given ALL THEIR DEMANDS.?

This episode is a wonderful example of how individuals today use politics and religion to raise themselves to positions of celebrity and power. Simply put: hate sells; fear fuels hate; and he who can engender fear in the masses and fan those flames into hate raises him/herself into a position of celebrity and riches. People across the nation listen to this person, quote this person, and take their message of fear and hate to heart. This is the formula in our country today for those who desperately crave the attention of the masses and the add-on of great wealth. Turn on any talk radio show; listen with an objective, critical ear, and see if it isn't true. Pastor Jones was simply attempting to emulate a formula he saw work so well for others. He just dumped too much fuel too fast, and the fire got out of control.

Unless national security is seriously endangered, I do not think that we should limit the freedom to protest. As a former journalism teacher/reporter, however, I believe that "shock television" from right, left, and the middle in the pursuit of ratings sometimes doesn't exercise enough restraint. Who cares about the morally challenged, judgment impaired minister of a tiny Florida church? I sincerely hope that he doesn't speak for any sort of majority of Americans. The Muslim friends I made while living at International House in college were wonderfully peace-loving people. The American Muslims I have known since were truly saddened by the militaristic twisting of their faith by extremists at 9/11. To look back on the fad phrase WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? I think he would show compassion for others who have come to God in a different way. We Christians are better than this, people. And if we aren't, then we need to be.

I think there is plenty of blame to go around, but no one should blame "the media," whatever that means at this point in time.

There are plenty of stories that get buried deep inside news outlets, printed and online. What brings something like this, an otherwise insignificant "minister" making obviously attention-seeking provocative threats and claims, to the front burner of international attention? It's us, the audience who endlessly consumes media about "celebrities."

From Paris Hilton to movie star couples to hate-speaking "religious leaders" - can we please collectively see how this modern cult of the media can range from being a giant waste of time to actually causing real harm? If we didn't pay attention to this stuff, it would go away. The news and entertainment companies are only dishing out what people want.

I know this will probably never happen - but wouldn't it be great to return to the days when most celebrities had to actually do something remarkable to become famous?

From the Baha'i scriptures: "The unbelievers and the faithless have set their minds on four things: first, the shedding of blood; second, the burning of books; third, the shunning of the followers of other religions; fourth, the extermination of other communities and groups." (Baha'u'llah, Tablets of Baha'u'llah, p. 91)

It is reprehensible to count someone else's sin as an excuse to commit still another. A Christian wants to burn a book and a Muslim wants to kill the burner. Then Christians and Muslims want to shun each other; then the Muslims and Christians want to exterminate each other. (Don't pretend that extremists in both camps haven't already suggested this, even in the comments on this site). Both are wrong. They have become "unbelievers and faithless." How easy, in the name of one's own idea of "good", to betray the principles of Jesus and Muhammad.

I personally find it pathetic that Americans are no so afraid of the Muslims that we're basically kowtowing to them? Trying to placate terrorists with tolerance, kind words and behavior?

BAH HUMBUG.

I seriously doubt that burning a few Qu'rans will cause Islamic terrorists to launch an attack.

If we have to live in that house of cards, where the military, the president, and "all the king's men" are AFRAID of Muslim retaliation, then we've LOST OURSELVES AS A COUNTRY.

Pathetic, completely pathetic.

Burn 'em, baby, burn 'em! The message I'd be getting if I were Muslim is that Americans have had ENOUGH. Muslim clerics need to start taking responsibility for their religion and the consequences of jihad & terrorism.

Muslim clerics need to speak out against the terrorists and denounce their actions.

I don't see that happening...do you?

If Islam is such a violent religion, then perhaps it should simply be banned. After all, many Muslim countries don't allow any other religion to be practiced.

Tit for tat, I say. I'm tired of all this pussyfooting around. America needs to remember 9/11 and start thinking smart, regardless of how unpopular it is, in preventing terrorism.

I think we're just wasting money and lives trying to contain terrorism, let alone eradicate it, in the Middle East. If we're so worried about further attacks, then perhaps we'd better start getting smart, like some European countries that are wising up.

I personally think we should, at least for awhile, ban all foreign-born Muslims from entering the U.S. (except for those having business with the U.S. government at the While House). We should monitor all Muslims in the U.S., including their mosques and all public gatherings.

After all, these people have DECLARED WAR ON US! Are we that arrogant or just that stupid that we don't act like it?

I mean, we can survive or we cannot. But we're not going to be able to have our cake and eat it, too.

Now, we are too scared to see a single silly Pastor of a tiny church in Florida-and no where near any Muslim part of the world-exercise his Constitutional freedoms. The fact that it could lead to demonstrations and death is an indictment of the Muslim crazies, not us. We are the psychologically and spiritually mature culture but we must be careful not to project an image of being intimidated and cowering in fear from a bunch of 7th century goons. Jones burning the Koran gives patriotic Americans something to cheer. Islam is an evil alien ideology brought by unwanted immigrants. Our country is now living through a time of dispossession, where millions are immigrating from backwater countries to no good purpose, refusing to assimilate, causing violence and chaos, draining the public treasury, and stealing jobs from citizens in our static economy.

Here is a moment when we can reflect on what needs to be done for us to survive. The very first step towards self-preservation: elect a government that ends birthright citizenship and places a moratorium on more immigration, especially from Muslim countries.

As does the religious Islamic right in Islamic countries.
