To Sarah Palin: It's not all about you

One of the most brilliant opening lines of any book I have read is that of Pastor Rick Warren from the Saddleback Church in California. His book, "A Purpose Driven Life," one of the great bestsellers of all time, begins with this: "It's not about you."

In the days since the Arizona shooting, Americans have given a great deal of thought to why this tragedy happened. What is the meaning of this, and who is to blame? The pundits, the politicians, ordinary citizens have all weighed in. The focus keeps coming back to Sarah Palin.

I bring up Palin simply because, yet again, she is at the center of a controversy that shouldn't be about her.

It's not surprising that after Gabrielle Giffords was shot, people brought up Palin's website that had targeted Giffords's district with crosshairs. After all, Giffords herself had spoken about the imagery before the election. "When people do that," she said, "they've got to realize there's consequences to that action."

When people cited that quote, Palin's response was to portray herself as victim.

"After this shocking tragedy," she said, "I listened at first puzzled, then with concern, and now with sadness, to the irresponsible statements from people attempting to apportion blame for this terrible event."

"But, especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible."

Palin, of course, made her name with pugnacious political statements, "Don't retreat, reload" among the most famous.

Yet she always references God. She told Glenn Beck after the shooting that "I hate violence. I hate war. Our children will not have peace if politicos just capitalize on this to succeed in portraying anyone as inciting terror and violence. Thanks for all you do to send the message of truth and love and God as the answer."

In her video she said, "In times like this we need God's guidance and the peace He provides."

God's guidance.

In her inspiring new book, "Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life," religion historian Karen Armstrong talks about St. Paul. She says, "the practice of charity is incompatible with the hurtful stratagems we devise to undermine others and inflate the ego." And she quotes Paul: "Love is patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take offense, and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people's wrongdoing but delights in truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes."

These are the qualities and sentiments we want in our leaders. Armstrong talks about the self, how important it is for us to recognize our own failings but to feel compassion for the failings of others. "A more productive way to deal with hostile feelings toward others is to realize that those we dislike are suffering from them much in the same way."

I believe that what brings out so many hostile feelings toward Sarah Palin is that many people look at her and see the dark side of themselves. The psychiatrist will tell you that often what you hate in others is the thing you are most afraid of in yourself.

Armstrong talks, too, about how every fundamentalist movement she has studied "is rooted in a profound fear of annihilation: and each one began with what was perceived to be an assault by the liberal or secular establishment." That assault, says Armstong, "merely convinces its adherents that their enemies really are bent on their destruction."

It would be an understatement to say that Palin's video release about herself was inappropriate on the same day President Obama flew to Tucson to memorialize those who had been killed or wounded. To say it was self destructive is also an understatement. To say that it showed lack of leadership would be too obvious.

Obama took the moment to rise above vitriol and politics, to bring the community and the country together. "... At a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized - at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who happen to think differently than we do - it is important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we're talking with each other in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds." And "what we cannot do is use this tragedy as one more occasion to turn on each other."

Obama didn't invoke God, except to read a bit of scripture. "There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the most high dwells. God is within her; she will not fall: God will help her at break of day."

Obama's words invoked the best in all of us. He made us believe in the goodness of ourselves, of human nature and of the country. We want leaders who can make us believe in the best we can be, not someone who will bring out the pettiness, anger, hostility, selfishness, and other base emotions.

Which is why, when I watched Obama the other night. I felt inspired. I felt proud. When I watched Sarah Palin's video I felt like I wanted to take a bath.

Was Palin responsible for the shooting in Arizona? Of course not. Does she share responsibility for creating a climate of suspicion and hostility and even violence? I think so. As much as she talks about God, it's always God 'n' guns. With her, the two seem inseparable.

There were other ways for her to respond to this event.

Palin believes in Jesus. One wonders, if, while she was preparing her video response, she asked herself, "What Would Jesus do?"

There are so many things she could have said, not in her defensive video but right after the shooting. She could have talked about the victims in more detail rather than speak of herself as the victim. She could have inspired us rather than divide us. But divide us, yet again, she did.

Instead of changing the tone, she yet again used inflammatory rhetoric: "We know violence isn't the answer. When we 'take up our arms' we're talking about our vote." And "We certainly must not be deterred by those who embrace evil and call it good. And we will not be stopped from celebrating the greatness of our country and our foundational freedoms by those who mock its greatness by being intolerant of differing opinion and seeking to muzzle dissent with shrill cries of imagined insults."

It's all about her.

@persiflage, you would do well to actually read the things you post. The Pew poll that you posted clearly states that Democrats are over-represented in the least-knowledgeable segment of the population. Thanks for proving my point that the Democrats test out dumber, although you didn't know that's what you were doing.

But why do you think it's "pugnacious" to point out that you're just flatly wrong? I am just trying to help educate you, since all the facts are against you and reality does not seem to have had much of an impact on you yet. The belief among Democrats that they're smarter than Republicans is a simple and often-disproved delusion.

Whom would I rather have serving in Congress, Christine O'Donnell or Alvin Greene? But that is off topic.

The topic is that Sally Quinn is doubling down on the most cynical example of vitriol that has come out the press in a long time. The liberal press can't say that some "tweet" from Sarah Palin or map on her website had anything to do with the tragedy. That has been thoroughly debunked. But not "wanting any crisis to go to waste", they revile her for defending herself from these accusations. Did Sarah Palin speeches come anywhere close to the "uncivil rhetoric" of accusing her opponents of being complicit in murder?

Sally Quinn the hypocrite.

This pugnacious diatribe is hardly a stellar example of critical thinking. And just below I'm supplying one of those famous 'knowledge' polls that we're hearing so much about.

Education is the key to success in any knowledge-related survey. Who would have thought? Recent Tea Party candidates O'Donnell and Angle were hardly the sharpest tools in the shed....one claimed to be a former witch and the other was a fundamenalist minister who opposed the separation of church and state.

Sorry about the LOL - I misjudged the age of my audience.

In your attempt, Ms. Quinn, to make yours a voice of reason, you have again created a partisan voice for Obama. Further, you, too, have done what other liberals have done and that’s to blame Palin insinuating that she’s a fundamentalist, a rabble rouser who has no leadership skills. Your view (one identified by your recent trek to a spiritual safe place you choose not to reveal) is that anyone who invokes God should not speak out in the public square. It’s almost that as the religious editor of the Washington Post your task is to root God out, the Christian God in particular.

Whether you believe she has leadership skills or not, when Palin becomes President, you should guard against your voice becoming “dissent with shrill cries.”

Sorry Ms. Quinn, but it is truly sad to see that you are that blind to what took place immediately after the shooting in Tuscon?

It was absolute witch hunt, not only against Sarah Palin, but against every conservative talk show host, and anyone who is conservative in general.

Her response, was to give condolence to those who were the victims of this attack, but also put those who were out to place blame, in their place. Every word she spoke is true.

Gov. Palin was by no means trying to make this about her. She had NOTHING to do with this. She was pulled into it by all of the liberal press, and the likes of you. And it was truly disgusting what took place, in placing the blame on her.

This entire article is nothing more than garbage, seething with envy, jealousy, and contempt.

For you to come out, and state that she made it about her, to draw attention to herself......sounds more like teenage immaturity that never left you, only in an extremely disturbing way.

@persiflage, who after being informed that Republicans consistently score higher than Democrats on polls of actual knowledge, insisted that "Polls consistently show no such thing - polls typically consist of opinions, rather than proof. This may well be the considered opinion of most republicans LOL." Well, first of all, there is a difference between opinion polls, which measure opinions, and knowledge polls, which measure knowledge. Several well-known firms have for years regularly conducted knowledge polls which measure actual knowledge as opposed to, say, how much you hate Sarah Palin. And in knowledge polls, Democrats are typically the dumbest of any group. This would not be a surprise to anyone who knew anything.

The only ones who are trying to state Sarah Palin is at the center of all this are those who so viciously hate her for simply being Christian, Pro-Life, giving birth to a special needs child instead of doing away with him (the attacks against her youngest son have been atrocious), Republican, and Conservative.

Not long after the story hit of the Tuscon tragedy Sarah Palin, Tea Party members, Fox News, Republicans, and Conservatives in general were being accused of having blood on their hands.

Then when news organizations think Sarah Palin should give a response, she offers one four days later. Not in defense of herself...but all those who were being falsely and unjustly maligned by liberals and a mass media who would seek to use the situation towards their own ends.

Shame on you.

'And polls consistently show that Democrats underperform Republicans in questions of actual knowledge, so you've got your shallow thinking all upside down. The pool of shallow thinkers is the one that Democrats swim in.'

Polls consistently show no such thing - polls typically consist of opinions, rather than proof. This may well be the considered opinion of most republicans LOL.

The only smart republican of note that comes to mind following the fiscal and real estate meltdown of the Bush era, is Ben Bernanke, chief of the Fed....crafting fiscal policy that, along with a democratic congress and a democratic president, pretty much saved the nation from complete fiscal ruin. Meanwhile, the republicans in congress have uniformly resisted the democratic administration at every turn - and were wrong to do so every time. The bailouts necessarily started with the Bush administration, after all.

There are few economists of either party pursuasion that would disagree with Bernanke and recent Fed policies 'after the fact'. The republican party remains bereft of ideas or solutions, other than cutting benefits to the many while maintaining a cloak of protection for corporate interests and the ruling elite.

The democrats are not by any means free of the same influences, but at least have the humility to recognize that ordinary folks
are the ones actually needing the help.

Unemployment remains high because in spite of massive corporate profits over the last 8 quarters, there is no corporate will to hire.

Fewer workers, better technology, and continued outsourcing keep production levels where they need to be for those very large corporate salaries and long-awaited corporate dividends. Millions of jobs are gone for good - and republicans all the while sat and their hands and whined about democratic control. Now that the worm has turned, we'll see how that works out for ordinary Americans.

One thing to take to the bank - healthcare reform will remain ... unchanged.

Sarah Palin is stupid? Seen her on Fox News lately? Two years ago, she was an inexperienced small time Governor. Now, she spars with the big boys. An amazing transformation. Has the liberals gnashing their teeth.

Obama is so smart? What was that business about visiting all 57 states? Why has he fought tooth and nail releasing any undergraduate or graduate school grades. My guess is that he was an affirmative action near flunky. He does read from the teleprompter well, though.

Here's a typical Palin apologist from another thread:

"Obama said: If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,".

He said this with regard to strategies for combatting terrorism. This is a far cry from implicitly recommending similar strategies to employ on the opposing political party....whether metaphorically speaking, or otherwise.

Palin has been stirring up political sentiments with similar audience pleasing gun slogeneering since the early pre-election days when her biggest fans were avid NRA sympathizers, disenfranchised pre-tea party folk, and other and various anarchists of note.

The irony of stalwart members of this motley crew eventually adopting the Tea Party nom de plume sounds like a classic piece of Rovian devilry - clever, but completely divorced from any remote association with the actual historical truth.

The power of words and their ability to convey many fictional 'truths' has not been lost on any politician since humans began talking and walking upright. That they can be incendiary and a call to action with the right audience has been proven too many times to count.

Nevertheless, giving a dimwit like Sara Palin this much free media coverage is really a travesty. It's doubtful she remembers what she says from one minute to the next. That she could conceivably be a presidential candidate is really beyond the farthest reaches of reasonable intelligence.

What we don't need is more completely ordinary shallow thinkers in high office, much less in the Oval office. Palin perfectly represents this sizable demographic in the USA.

But when all is said and done, she seems like a completely probable presidential republican candidate for 2012. With Palin and her stupid rabble rousing comments, we're getting a early snapshot of the unimaginable.

Democrats need to take this quite seriously....the ennui present in the last election cycle is not acceptable down the road. The fate of the country hangs in the balance.

As another commentator put it:

Liberals: Sarah Palin's hateful rhetoric was responsible for the shooting.
Palin: No, it wasn't.
Liberals: Why does Palin have to make it about her?

Sarah Palin in her video, firstly repeated her condolences to the familes of victims, then appropriately defended herself from evil libel, then concluded with the very salubrious words:

"Let us honor those precious lives cut short in Tucson by praying for them and their families and by cherishing their memories. Let us pray for the full recovery of the wounded. And let us pray for our country. In times like this we need God’s guidance and the peace He provides. We need strength to not let the random acts of a criminal turn us against ourselves, or weaken our solid foundation, or provide a pretext to stifle debate.

America must be stronger than the evil we saw displayed last week. We are better than the mindless finger-pointing we endured in the wake of the tragedy. We will come out of this stronger and more united in our desire to peacefully engage in the great debates of our time, to respectfully embrace our differences in a positive manner, and to unite in the knowledge that, though our ideas may be different, we must all strive for a better future for our country. May God bless America."

Good words. Full transcript here: http://tinyurl.com/4dkqo9w

What a great article! Well written and very clear. Palin quit her job as governor so she could take advantage of the same golden goose that Limbaugh/Beck/O'Reilly/Hannity/et al have discovered. Say anything obnoxious ("how's that hopey changey thing workin' for ya' now") to get more attention to massage the huge ego AND to generate more dollars for her own pocketbook. More controversy gives her more exposure which generates more book sales and more advertisers which equals MILLIONS of dollars for poor ol' Sarah and Todd.

If she hadn't quit her governorship, she would have gone back into obscurity in Alaska for two years and MISSED the opportunity to take advantage of being in the limelight.

It's time for Limbaugh/Beck/Hannity/Palin to start talking about what's RIGHT WITH AMERICA instead of CONSTANTLY complaining about everything. Listen to their shows and you will find they are not happy being in America. And people wonder how America became so divided? Three hours a day for 20 years of a constant barrage of complaining might do it.

Poor Sarah, the whole world is trying to get her. She plays the "victim card" very well. From Katie curic who asked her as benign a question as what do you read, what did you eat for breakfast(I made up the 2nd one), everybody is out to insult her that she doesn't read or can't afford breakfast (again I made it up). Same with Sen.McCain's 2008 election staff--they were all trying to get her.
There was one opportunity to make oneself look better. The "Tea Partier by proxy" McCain appreciated Obama's speech & emphasized on civility. The real Tea Partier aka Sarah Palin, did her usual stuff--being obnoxious & screaming victimization.
If I were her (phew...I'm not), I would have sent Ms. Giffords a Get Well card, adding a note, apologizing for the "misinterpretation" of the "surveyers' map". But then it is me--not Sarah Palin. Even my toe-nail has better civility than her.
An advice to the Queen of the Tea Party- while using the much rediculed telepropter, it is better to have two so you can read from either, instead of stupidly staring without blinking.

"Does [Palin] share responsibility for creating a climate of suspicion and hostility and even violence? I think so."

Well, Sally Quinn, how very hypocritical of you....you praise Obama for his 'inspiration' in the same column you use to bash Palin for 'creating a climate of hostility'. Tell me...was Obama 'inspiring' to you when he talked of bringing guns to a fight with Republicans?

I have as much evidence that this quote from Obama caused the tragedy in Tucson, as you have evidence that Palin and her 'cross-hairs' map did. I find it very interesting that only 'violent rhetoric' on one side of the political spectrum seems to bother you.

The unabashed hypocrisy of those like Sally Quinn leave me queasy, as they vainly attempt to use the Bible as cover for their sleazy political opportunism....

It's sad when I read someone like Sally Quinn, who pretends to come from a Biblical point of view...but clearly puts political ideology at the forefront and religious context is only used when it's convenient.

Take, for instance, Sally Quinn's pharisaical challenge to Palin to consider 'what would Jesus do'?

Well, for one, I doubt Jesus would pounce on the tragic slaughter of innocents at the hands of a madman to score cheap points against political opponents.

I also doubt Jesus would make intentional efforts to mislead the readers of his blog....trying to convince them that Sarah Palin is trying to make this tragedy 'about her', when the left-wing media was dragging her name into it before the dead bodies were cold.

After days of enduring salacious mudslinging from the left, and near-hourly ponderments of why Palin wasn't responding....Palin finally felt compelled to respond DAYS after the tragedy....and was immediately villafied (again) by the rabid wolves of those similar to Sally Quinn who were looking for any reason to smear Palin's name....clearly out of jealousy of how effective she has been rallying the opponents of the left in our country.

You know, "judge not that ye be not judged" is one of the most overused and misquoted pieces of Scripture, as it's clear theological application never claimed you shouldn't question wrong things when you see them....unless you yourself are guilty of similar (or worse) actions. So in this case, this admonishment of Christ to 'judge not, that ye be not judged' solidy applies to Sally Quinn.

She self-righeously preaches to Palin about 'what would Jesus do', but clearly avoids all effort to look in the mirror and consider the same question in relation to her own column.

Finally, ninety years ago, if you had the guts, that is the stomach for it; and the wiliness, you could monopolize any product or service vital to the country, destroy any and all competition using whatever means was at your disposal; live in unapologetic, decadent splendor, while your workers labored 84 hours a week at starvation wages, living in pestilent slums- drinking contaminated milk and eating spoiled meat, until they were too sick, injured or old to work- and were then thrown away like junk. Since then the FDA, the Social Security Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service have accompanied the rise of the United States to superpower-status, with the largest, most dynamic economy in the world. All this “big-government” has not resulted in a shortage of millionaires, or in a faltering of economic dominance. In fact, the most recent crisis is a consequence of a lack of governmental vigilance and intervention.

What Private Citizen Palin represents is a reversal of all the progress we’ve made in the last century.
Being propelled to the national stage and given a pulpit to bully from, she legitimizes all those that have kept alive sentiments that many of us believed were largely banished to the ignorance and prejudices of a bygone era. We have discovered, to our dismay, that while those sentiments have been greatly subdued and largely dormant, they are far from dead. We ARE angry because Palin and others like her are serving as catalytic agents to reinvigorate that ignorance and prejudice, releasing and spreading a cultural plague that could throw us back a century into the past.

I am one of those that delight the hard-right supporters of Private Citizen Sarah Palin. I bark and yelp, twisting in furious circles at the sound of her voice issuing some new provocation to me and my kind.
The ultra-conservative bloggers, the talk-radio hosts and their comrades commenting on the op-ed pages are right: she does drive us (the left, the liberals, the Democrats, the moderates, the well-read, the reasonable, the thoughtful) crazy; getting us “where we live.” I am chagrined that she can “push my buttons” with such ease. However, those flocking to Palin’s banner misinterpret- willingly or not, the “why” of it all.

Contrary to what they put forth as the reason for our obsessive fury regarding the rise of this phenomenon, we do not feel threatened by her- not directly, anyway. We don’t fear her becoming the President of the United States, and in fact harbor the hope that she can somehow wrestle the nomination away from more traditional conservative Republican candidates. We take heart in her national poll numbers indicating her unelectable outside the Republican-fold, and enjoy the squirming of the Republican establishment as they contemplate their being denied the oval office, as they have been denied the senate-majority, ala O’Donnell and Angle. With every new gaffe, each new piece of evidence indicating a lack of intellectual investment, we can see national office slipping farther and farther beyond Palin’s ambitious grasp. What drives everyone from the moderate right to the liberal left into Pavlovian-spasms of indignation and incredulity is what she represents.

Conservatives assert the United States of America is ideologically conservative, and perhaps, that is true in some senses. However, over the last one hundred years we have decided that women and African-Americans can participate in electing our leaders; that segments of religious thought will not restrict or prohibit what we read, learn or teach. We have gone from mocking and disdaining “long-haired” intellectuals to honoring the Bill Gates, Steven Hawkings and Carl Sagans among us. All of us can live where we want, worship as we like. It’s even getting to the point where we can love and marry whom we want. Seventy years ago, the vast majority of Americans had never traveled beyond our borders, nor had much interest in doing so. Since then, generations of Americans have sought out the world; to engage it, learn from it and participate in it- from the Peace Corps to Rotary International Exchange groups. In 1941 we culled Japanese-Americans from our midst, because we doubted they were “Real Americans;” but we belatedly came to our senses, apologized and attempted to atone for our mistakes, with tangible cash. 100 years ago, as the railroads spread cities and industries across the continent, wiping out buffalo herds and other species in the process, a Republican President saw the natural environment was something to be treasured and protected- and institute

We also know that this isn't about President Obama (as much as some of you would like it to be). This is about Sarah Palin, her need to be the center of attention all the time and her need to act tough up until the time the toughness gets her in trouble. Then , she really plays a great victim. She HAVE single handedly gave hated speeches. She promotes “We don’t retreat, we reload” and then put up a map on her web page target symbols in Democratic Districts. This type of words and action give the crazies a window to act out their hatred crimes.

Then last week, she played the victim card, No I will not give her a pass on this on, no not me.

She and her entourage continue to be associates with people showing up at rallies with guns, that have large signs such as; “Don’t Tread on Me, and I want my country back” or “second amendment remedies”.

Look, she will stay on the attack; she will never walk back her democratic target map or promote toning it down. The negative remarks ARE how she makes her M-O-N-E-Y.

Who in this chat room believes that the symbols on her map are surveyors marks? What is she trying to build that covers half the country? Give me a break. Just wait until election time, when she and HER GUN TOTING entourage start targeting democrats. Her mouth will drip with blood. And just yesterday she was hired to be a keynote speaker a a upcoming gun convention. OH, is this how she makes her M-O-N-E-Y?

Lastly, her remarks preempted the president remarks, she should have waited until the first family had the Tucson’ memorial service. Her comments were in a presidential setting with a fire place and the American flag. Give me a freaking break, who the hell she think she is?

This messiah sitting in the White House listened to racial hate speech for twenty years while he was a member of Rev. Wrights church. He never heard a word of it and did not really have that much of a relationship with the man who led him to religion, his spiritual adviser. You are so full of it, Sally Quinn. That you are writing articles on faith for the Post is appropriate.

What cowards all the Washington Post writers are. Everyone of them who wrote an article brought up Palin as the cause for this shooting. Days later when she responded they tell her its not about her. Who was it about in all those articles, was it Ted Kennedy, was it Joe McCarthy, was it Roseanne, or maybe it was Barney Fife. You a-holes are still keeping it up a week later, trying to convince the people that your attack was not directed at her, even though her name was in all the articles. You must do this so some other writer can quote part of your article and prove this was not your intention. Your intention is to blame, smear, besmirch, and demean someone you have always felt is a threat to your intention of keeping the White House. Thats all it is. If she wasn't in politics her name would not be cared about. You're a liar, and a two faced coward.

I think you're mistaken about Sarah Palin being Christian. Haven't you ever seen the videos of her participating in exorcisms conducted by that African shaman famous for actually hunting down women accused of witchcraft? (Christine O'Donnell, beware!)

I've always assumed Gov. Palin practiced some sort of blended religion like Santeria or Voodoo. After all, it would go a long way toward explaining her apparent fascination with ritualized animal killing and bloodletting. Perhaps it would explain some of her very un-Christian rhetoric as well.

Her video last week was totally inappropriate -- the timing, the words used, etc. Before using phrases like "Blood libel", she really should have checked the historical origin of the phrase.

But then why should we have been surprise, because as you say, for Palin -- "It's all about her." To her nothing else matters.

I too found Palin's video both arrestingly defensive and "all about her."

We're all culpable. We watch degraded shows, read degraded commentary, click on degraded links and delight in the voyeurism of both celebrity and politics, giving the Madison Avenue guys and the TV guys cause to say, "we're just giving the people what they want." And Palin is one of us writ large. She, too, is culpable.

Is it ALL Palin's fault? No, but she surely bears a huge portion of the blame for our current climate. Just as do many Fox news personalities and also the hyperbolic vitriol out of the Left. I think Fox and Palin have a bigger reach, a more coordinated campaign, but both sides do it.

Saying "we're all culpable" can help us individually and as a society to ask for and expect better standards for ourselves.

As a Christian, I find it especially troublesome that Palin so closely conflates God and Jesus with gun sights and "lock and load." I hear her mouth moving on God, but I see a huge disconnect between her words and her actions, between her show of religious devotion and behaviors that no self-respecting Christian woman or man that I know would ever put his or her name to. I do not see calling this disconnect out for what it is an "attack" on poor victimized Palin. I think if she wants us to think of her more highly, she's got to deliver. But if she wants to play low down and dirty junk yard dog politics, then you know, we're going to see her as salivating and going for the jugular.

You just can't have it both ways.

But most of all, it's not about her. That level of ego also belies an understanding of a relationship with God. She fails on all fronts.

Palin makes "pugnacious political statements" in order to attract attention to herself. She does not have ideas that are profound or well-developed that she airs in order to foster constructive debates.

In the absence of substance, Palin says whatever will make people look at her. Her credo could be: "Look at me" because she is narcissistic.

She makes things up such as reading newspapers and demeans those who expose her (Katie Couric). She deflects the truth and attention that is negative.

Palin won't last long unless times become desperate. Desperate times produce desperate people and they will listen to her because they will want someone to blame for the predicaments in which they find themselves.

Not only is Palin dopey and irresponsible but so are her supporters because they espouse and support the nonsense that she preaches.

PDS.
There's a new affliction sweeping the nation, and it's known as Palin Derangement Syndrome. The phenomenon is similar to Bush Derangement Syndrome, a term coined by political columnist Charles Krauthammer to describe the personal animosity and irrational hatred directed at President Bush by his leftist opponents. But this time, Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, is the object of wrath.

The feeding frenzy began with the news of Palin's selection, but it was her electrifying speech at the Republic National Convention last month that really set it off. In one fell swoop, Palin managed to energize the Republican base, breathe life into the McCain campaign, launch some very effective jabs at Barack Obama, and quite possibly, attract the support of the 18 million Hillary Clinton voters.

The attacks on Palin have ranged from patronizing to vicious to fantastical. She has been caricatured as an inexperienced rube, a baby-making automaton, an uneducated underachiever, a bad mother, trailer-park trash, a rightwing religious fanatic, a sexual fantasy, and of course, a fascist. No subject has been deemed taboo in the effort to take Palin down.

What her detractors don't seem to realize is that in the process of insulting Palin, they are insulting the majority of the country. If being a self-made success story, a working mother, a church-going member of a small-town community, and a believer in moderate to conservative political viewpoints disqualifies Palin, what does that say about mainstream America? The inherent condescension at the heart of the anti-Palin campaign is coming across loud and clear and it may actually be boosting her popularity.

I suggest that Sally Quinn's assignment change from writing a column on faith to that of Faith in Obama. She is a political partisan who is incapable of any objective thought.

Where was she when radicals from the left called for harm against President Bush or when a movie depicting his assassination was made.

The problem with liberals is that they think they have a monopoly on morality, that their minds have evolved, and that they are enlightened people while the rest of us are stuck in ignorance and superstition.

An objective view, however, demonstrates that liberals remain deceived and blinded by their own grandiosity. They fail to see their own hypocrisy in thought, word and deed. Remember the old adage, "People who live in glass houses should never throw stones."

Ms. Quinn,
Thank you for this insightful commentary.
Like you, I saw this video emerge 10 hours before the Tucson memorial service, so I clicked in on the Web to watch it in its entirety.
As I listened to the early parts of the video, I realized she was trying to one-up President Obama ahead of his address in Tucson and she was doing a pretty good job of trying to make it look like he was emulating her ideas in Tucson, when he later spoke.
But she was not clearly satisfied to attempt that ploy.
She had to go farther because Giffords had, months earlier, pinned her "gunsight map" to consequences, and Palin became much more animated in the video (her voice took on a harder, more strident edge) as she tried to defend her thesis that she is the ersatz leader of those who are willing to take up arms to overthrow this government because it's not HER government.
The trolls came out in droves in her defense (evidence these Washington Post comment boards).
They completely ignore that Loughner left behind a note using the terms "assassination", "Giffords" and an expletive against her.
He went to the Safeway lot armed to the teeth, and Giffords suffered the initial attack, from behind, I might note, being the coward that he was.
Ms. Giffords never saw him coming, he moved so swiftly.
But then, Palin has, from almost the first moment she stepped on the national stage, carefully ginned up the possibility that someone might attempt a presidential assassination.
I worried about that possibility during the whole of the 2008 campaign and my worries have not diminished during the past 2 years of the president's administration.
So in a way, playing into Loughner's specific paranoia with that rhetoric means that Giffords' injuries, not to mention those of the other victims, are in effect "collateral damage" to the main focus of the group adoring Palin's message -- the mob assault on American politics to take over the reins of government by all means at their disposal, including propaganda, threats or outright action.
The Tucson shooting is a warning to America of what may come if this behavior is allowed to continue without challenge.
God help us all if this slide continues and gains steam.

My wife watched Sarah Palin's Alaska for a few weeks. Despite the rave reviews a few on this blog have given, she said the Palin was behaving inappropriately to her children. There was a level of open disrespect shown. The segment that I saw showed Palin sitting at her desk downstairs with one of the girls upstairs. The girl's boyfriend entered the house and despite Sarah's edict, the boy went upstairs anyway. The way Sarah was positioned, she could not see the boy. in fact, she didn't seem concerned.

I want to know why Palin responded at a time that the news cycle was to focus on the memorial in Tucson. It has been my observation during the last few decades or so that Republicans manage to try to upstage key events that should focus on the Democratic Party or Presidency.

Gee Sally, I didn't get a chance to read your article that takes issue with Krugman, Matthews, Alter, Durbin, Clyburn, Maher and all the other Liberals that tried to connect Palin, Limbaugh and other Conservatives with blame for the massacre within hours of the event. Falsely connecting someone with a massacre, on speculation with zero proof, is very irresponsible and goes against Judeo Christian tenets. Do not bear false witness. Certainly that deserves more condemnation than someone defending themselves from false accusations.

I have seen you being interviewed on Bill O'Reilly's show where you get that "Deer in the headlights" look when he calls you on your biased reporting, especially in the case of Sarah Palin. I can only conclude that you are incredibly jealous of her stardom and physical beauty, like most other marginally attractive or unattractive Upper East Side and Beltway female media and print journalists. 1.Palin, of course, made her name with pugnacious political statements, "Don't retreat, reload" among the most famous.
That is false, leading some to believe this is true is libel. Palin made her name by running for VP. This is pure BS. Palin was well known long before the 2010 elections. To take that quote and use it as defining Palin's fame is disingenious at best, and outright lying at worst.
Obama is much better know for his "bring guns to a knife fight" than Palin is for lock and reload. The media made that her quote and defining statement after the shootings, not before.

There is such a huge disconnect between some of the less thoughtful comments on Ms Quinn's column and her clear statements that I wonder if the real problem is a lack of intellectual engagement. It is easy to slander and demonize and spout a party line regardless of engaging Ms. Quinn on what she actually says. This is not a hate filled column, it is reasoned and thoughtful. Disagree with her rationally, argue on points of content, fine. Hysterically attack her with such offensive words, not even giving her the respect of arguing her points is not fine. Perhaps that is why some who offer commentary feel excluded because they lack the tools to debate. Maybe this is where the gulf is at it's widest between those who can argue objectively and those who resort to bigotry and hatred in defense of what they believe. Nowhere is this bourne out more clearly than in the intolerant, offensive and extremist tone of some of those sounding off here. But then anti-intellectualism is often the last resort of those with no substantial arguments of their own or meaningful understanding of the issues.

Have yet to see any proof that the deranged individual who is responsible for the murders ever saw the graphic that has been the focus of certain commentators. As they say in all those CSI shows, follow the evidence. There seems to be frustration in certain quarters about the outcome of the last election. Perhaps this frustration has led to trying to find fault with the opposition whether it exists in fact or not. If the authorities find that this mentally disturbed individual in fact had seen the graphic and it had something to do with his actions then Palin needs to take greater care in the future about how she criticizes those she opposes -- as should those on the other side. I have no intention of supporting Palin but can understand her reaction to unsubstantiated attacks.

There nothing hateful about this article. It was well written without any anger, but it was very constructive criticism and Sarah would do well to pay attention.
Her words were well chosen and did not hint of the hate that some of you seem bent on attaching to anyone who criticizes Sarah Palin. You do not do her a favor by thinking that her interjecting herself into every story with God and guns is going to serve her in the end.
=================================
You have got to be kidding. Palin hasn't interjected herself in anything. The WP has printed stories, distorted stories, about Palin's twits practically every day for the last two years and then blames Palin for interjecting herself! Take a course in propoganda and the use of media to slant opinions, and there you might finally have an intelligent thing to say on the matter.
Until everyone hates Palin and goes into lynch mob mentality, and a false witch hunt, nasty nutjobs like Quinn won't be happy. Until Quinn has accomplished that she will spill her lies and distortions to meet her ends. A pulic flogging and hanging of Palin with leftists cheering is all that would make Quinn happy. And this filth on a Sunday morning on a Faith page with the nation still reeling from a massacre is truely dispicalbe.

If Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh had released a statement like Palin's, I don't think people would be giving it this much attention. I think the reason her statement seems to be such a poor political move is because it was offered by someone we assume has an interest in the Oval Office.

But what if she doesn't? I submit that her comments are further evidence of her LACK of interest in the presidency. Perhaps she's happy being a second-tier Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh, free to make whatever statements she pleases without fear of political fallout. In fact, such statements attract eyeballs and attention, which would actually benefit a political commentator, which is all she appears to aspire to be.

However, as others have said, if she were in fact still interested in running for president, that's over now. Hopefully she can content herself with earning huge bucks through speaking fees, TV appearances, and book royalties.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.

Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.'" Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

Is this how you treat one of God's children? The same way that Jesus was treated by the high priests? I ask you Quinn, put down your pen and go read the Bible again before penning more hate and lies on a Faith page.

One of the greatest gifts about strong women is that they can be and many are "multi-talented" and "multi-faceted".

Women are educated, and yes we cook, we also clean, take care of the babies and the children, maintain the home inside and out, and take care of the men in our lives, et al all the while, while working outside the home.

Many women are born to lead and to also lead their sons and daughters to greatness.

Life for women "is not" always about "cooking cookies" and staying bare foot and pregnant, as some men and some women would like to have us all believing.

Some of us were born to lead and many of us learned this a long time ago.

Really, Ms. Quinn, this is neither about God nor Sarah Palin, and as a journalist, as you once were, you should know this.

Why don't we start with some facts? The shooter and perpetrator of this crime, Jared Loughner, is a paranoid schizophrenic according to the NY Times; this is a person who has no ability to relate or access the outside world according to Loughner's philosophy professor. He apparently worshiped an alter that consisted of a fake skull atop shriveled oranges in his parents' back yard. A high school classmate described him as "left-wing, very liberal'; an adult classmate in college described him as "very troubled" and added that no one would sit next to him. Others interviewed by this paper and the Times told of how they would sit near the door as they were afraid of what Loughner would do; a teacher told of how she was afraid to turn her back on him in class. And according to a neighbor and former friend, he never listened to radio or watched TV. His Facebook page, since pulled down, called the Tea Party "racist." Contrary to the liberal hype, this was not a politically motivated massacre, and even if it were, this was no tea-party type (any more than Maj Nadal Hassain, the Muslim psychiatrist who killed 12 and wounded 31 at Ft. Hood). This was the massacre of a truly sick person.

But there is more. Loughner asked Rep. Giffords a question and received a letter in reply in 2007--and on that letter he wrote words about her that I will not repeat here (but they are available to those who wish to know the facts). 2007 was long before anyone outside Alaska even knew who Sarah Palin was, long before Glenn Beck even came over from CNN Headline News to Fox News. But facts don't matter to Ms. Quinn to takes God's name to make a false case against Ms. Palin's free speech rights.

There are two other facts. One is that in 2006, the DNC (Democratic National Committee) also used a target map to highlight congressional districts to attack. And in this past election, at exactly the same time Ms. Palin had her target map up on the web, so did the Daily Kos, the heavily visited left-wing website. The Daily Kos's target map also had a target on Ms. Gifford's district.

But because Mr. Loughner didn't even vote in the 2010 election, and didn't care about TV or Radio, he likely didn't know about or care about any of this.

Did you know these things, Ms. Quinn? I'm betting that you did.

Thank-you for carrying the words of wisdom by others through research and forethought in producing this piece of good fortune for us today. If we are to become a better nation, I believe that individuals need to search their own souls for those liabilities of character which may prevent one from being a better servant of God and citizens.

Roaming the internet late one night, I suspect I met a Sufi teacher or Master (or at least a one that had deeply ingrained Sufism beliefs) who was open to questions. As a test for genuineness and my own curiosity while staying open to the principles of bridging religious beliefs on an international level, I asked this man a simple question.

The question I asked was, "What is ego ?". The Teacher of this night replied to me that, "Ego is that which is not from God". I can't describe the euphoria of the moment such a simple explanation brought to me, perhaps a gift from God him or herself, who knows. So, I readily recognize today that a politically driven culture which is "All about me" is in fact an ego based culture which is self absorbed and serving rather in conflict with the higher ideals and in common with multi-ethical and religious cultures all over the world which is to serve mankind.

The principle of serving mankind is ancient in philosophical and religious concepts and in Christianity relates to "Feed my sheep" another love in action principle.

I have heard lots of denials since this most recent national tragedy has unfolded and to me, denial is a bi-product of guilt. Perhaps, the ego of men and women seeks to protect itself. Denial was also described to me as a self defense mechanism, a component of self survival. Is there a need to defend oneself if one is not guilty ? It's a tough call when it comes to character assassination as a quiet defense may be the best course of action but to the politician, the limelight feeds the ego. I suppose, that I would not care at all but some entities are not really building character among the youth. As, a Sufi Elder could teach us a lesson by thoughts and actions which do breath humility.

So much from the all powerful me on this day, stay safe and be well...

LePauvrePapillon,
Your ignorance is astonishing—one cannot be a “Marxist Democrat”—they are two completely different political ideologies. Marxists ideology is centered on two class structures and the means of production; labor theory value and surplus value are central to Marxist theory. Democrats don’t embrace these theories at all—who in the democratic party has ever talked about labor theory valve? Frankly, I don’t think you have a clue about Marxist theory. Like Palin’s “blood libel” remark, you’re just tossing out the term “Marxist” because it sounds extreme. In fact, you don’t know what the term means.

Democrats believe totally in capitalism--in fact, millions of democrats are business owners and entrepreneurs. We participate in capitalism every day—it’s part of our culture—we embrace it, and more important, we believe totally in the system. Just because you say otherwise doesn’t make it true—it simply means you are making up lies about us.

And like republicans, democrats stand totally against the belief that wealth and privilege entitles one to rule and act with impunity—wow, bet you didn’t realize we had that in common, did you?

I guess where we differ is democrats belief the values of hardworking families should not be pushed by the way side by the wants of the corporate leaders. Many republicans on the other hand believe the wants of the corporate leaders should come before the American families.

I guess like your idol Sarah Palin, you simply concoct words to suit your needs. What’s the word Palin concocted, “refudiated?” When the world at large pointed out no such word existed in the English language, Palin tried to say it was a typo. But of course, video immediately surfaced of her using her concocted word in an interview. So it wasn’t a typo after all—just Palin making up words to suit her needs. But it doesn’t make it a valid word—just as “Marxist Democrats” isn’t a valid term.

Make a cause and effect connection between political speech, Sarah Palin's or some other, and Jared Loughner's actions. Until then, writing like the above merely exposes your lack of understanding that correlation does not imply causality, which is not a sign of sufficient education.

Very good article, Sally Quinn and one of your best, thus far.

I have always believed that women were not created to incite hate, war, fear, anger, and hostile emotions, et al, which men tend to do so often in the world and tend to bring out the worst in all of us.

We, as women were created instead to counteract these types of negative behaviors with guidance, love, compassion, patience, nurturing, and understanding. This the primary reason that Palin angers me so much and causes me to feel hostility towards her, because of the fact, I have seen none of these character traits in her.

As a woman myself, it's very difficult living in a man's world, but women do not have to act and behave like men in order to live in this world and be leaders, and nor should we have to be put into role acting and behaving like men, by our men, or society.

We, as women can be great presidents, leaders, mentors, mothers, wives, girlfriends, sisters, aunts et al, without all of the hostilities, anger, and provoke hate towards our fellow-men and women.

Either Palin has forgotten the reason she was created or maybe this a huge test for her to figure it out, so that she can pass it, or she was never born to lead this nation in the first place.

As people who claim to be Christians, it takes a highly "mature" confident, insightful, kind, and wise person with character to lead a people and a nation to greatness; and when they do they will learn it was never about them in the first place, all along it is and has been about doing the work of God for his purpose and not theirs.

Sally, I think that you should re-read your column. You quoted Sarah Palin's words, but you comes to illogical conclusions. Example: "We know violence isn't the answer." Inflammatory rhetoric? Not logical. Or this: "And we will not be stopped from celebrating the greatness of our country and our foundational freedoms by those who mock its greatness by being intolerant of differing opinion and seeking to muzzle dissent with shrill cries of imagined insults." So you find this rather patriotic observation of American rights and freedoms is "inflammatory rhetoric?" Interesting. Do you find our Bill of Rights to be inflammatory?

Face it. As a politician, she is dead. The shooting in Tucson will preclude her presidential adventures. As Edward Kennedy’s Chappaquiddick, she will never shake Tucson. Similarly, though thoroughly convoluted, her perceived anti-Semitic “Blood Libel” comment will stick to her, as Jesse Jackson's reference to The City of New York as "Himey-Town." Like them, she will never be taken seriously as a contender for the highest office. By knocking herself out, she did the GOP a favor. Republicans had to depose of her very soon to make a run for 2012, but feared displeasing female and conservative voters.

Lepauvrepapillon: For the perfect example of what Sally Quinn speaks of, see this person's comments. All Democrats are "Godless Marxists", even my 84 year old mother, a devout Catholic who has devoted her time and ailing body to helping other elderly people in our community. In this person's mind, Evil is synonymous with the Democratic Party, it's that simple. He/She seems to know the motivation of all Democrats, and that is to keep America safe for tyranny. Presumably in this person's eyes and mind, the Republican Party is the foremost bastion of patriotism, always out to defend America from the enemy within and without, the very portrait of goodness and wholesomeness. As pure as the driven snow. Propagandists in Germany 1939 could not have stated their case better. I'm an Independent, and I see no purity in either party, just different solutions to our myriad of problems and a prevailing tendency to sell themselves to the highest bidder. Both parties. Evil and goodness I leave to those who think in those terms. There are too many decent people in both parties to smear them outright.

I feel very bad for the family and acquaintances of people like Lepauvrepapillon. To have to suffer this person's constant paranoia, and that of those like him/her, must be very demanding and wearying. They never lie and they're always right. And always loud.

LePauvrePapillon, if it is the state-controlled Marxist media that is sending the message,"It's not all about you," then thank God for the state-controlled Marxist media.

Most of us are very tired of the sentiments of people like you whose definition of a good American is "someone who thinks exactly as I do", who can't engage someone who disagrees with them without questioning their sanity and their patriot, and who, indeed, seems to think that the answer to every policy debate is, "What's in it for me?"

Not surprisingly, you have, in your posts today, labeled everyone who disagrees with you a Marxist Democrat. Let's look for a moment at who you paint with that broad brush:

1. The US military is fairly evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. Does this mean we have good troops and evil troops fighting side by side in Iraq and Afghanistan to protect your right to spew venom because some of them have the audacity not to agree with you on every issue?

2. Gabbie Gifford is a conservative Democrat with whom you probably agree about gun rights and with whom you probably disagree about the Health Care Act. Is she a Marxist Democrat because she dares to disagree with your "it's all about me stance" on any issue whatsoever?

3. Mother Teresa devoted her adult life to helping the poor and the sick. Does this mean she was an evil Marxist, someone to be feared, hated, and derided at every opportunity because her top priorities in life don't exactly match yours?

In short, if you don't want to be accused of selfishness and self-centeredness, stop demonizing and dehumanizing anyone who happens to disagree with you. Learn to disagree with a belief or an opinion that someone expresses without reflexively and unfailingly belittling the person's intelligence and intentions. Finally, give some thought to whether its remotely possible that you are not always right and what you consider the best way forward may -- sometimes -- not be the best way at all.

Palin did not inject herself into this issue, you liberals in the media did it by linking her to the article. I would fully expect that if you had not done that, she would never had made any comments about the massacre, because the massacre was not about her and it wasn't about politics . . . that is until you made it about her and you made it political.

Even then, she showed great restraint in the days after the shooting. She was openly being accused of being an acomplice to mass murder and she still would not comment. Then the liberals were calling her out, asking why she was being silent, almost demanding that she say something. And say something she did, which further sent the left wing into a frenzy.

It amazes me how this woman, with no political office and nothing but a Facebook page, can whip millions of leftwingers into a hysterical rage.

Finally, Ms. Quinn, your mission would be much more effective if you adressed your bible commentary to the unchurched secular left. If you have the time, cruise through the comments at the rest of the Washington Post and see some of the vicious anti-Christian and anti-semetic ramblings from WP visitors. You missed the boat here, Sally. How can you be so blind.

Sarah Palin didn't make this about her. The knee-jerk fusillade of comments from all corners of the media, as well as posters on news threads immediately made the shootings about her.

And she had every right, indeed, a duty, to challenge the implicit allegations in the strongest of language. Which, of course hasn't stopped people from keeping it about her, as you are here.

Let's recap, in order:

1. A mentally ill man shot a number of people for dark and confused reasons. He said nothing to tie his actions with Sarah Palin.
2. A voluminous number of media organizations, pundits, and individuals on the internet, immediately tried to connect this tragic event with the Tea Party and especially, Sarah Palin. These comments were repugnant, and totally inaccurate.
3. Ms. Palin understandably made a public statement refuting such scurrilous and unfounded accusations.
4. In her comments, she used a completely reasonable term to describe the libelous comments against her. And yes, those falsehoods were bathed in the blood of innocent victims.
5. Some in the press then decided to keep it about her by damning her use of the term. This stimulated another round of shrill and voluminous comments by the plethora of folks who hate her.
6. You are still making this about her.

While she has tweaked some noses, and said some things that don't quite hold water, in my life I've never seen such an obsession and hate campaign by the media or the public against a public figure. Especially one who doesn't hold public office. It is really astounding.

And in this recent case it detracts from the tragedy born by the victims and the crime perpetrated by Loughner.

The national hateful obsession with Palin really does make it seem like the whole world's gone insane.

Delongl has it exactly right.

The state-controlled Marxist media blame Governor Palin for the atrocities committed by the Marxist Jared Loughner and then complain when she defends herself.

"It's not all about you," is their new talking point/slogan.

To which any half-awake person must automatically respond, "Well, if it's not all about Governor Palin, why do you insist on making her the story even when there is no connection whatsoever between her and this idiot in Arizona."

This regime has learned nothing from November 2010. They are still is convinced that their disingenuousness, deceit and hypocrisy will go unnoticed by the independent voters of this country. For the sake of liberty as well as the future of America, I hope they keep doing just exactly what they’ve been doing.

There are now fewer Democrats in Congress than at any time since 1948. If you are less than 62 years old, this is the first time in your lifetime that there have been less than 200 Democrats in the House of Representatives.

This didn’t happen because of anything the Republicans did. It happened because, two months ago, independent voters in this country soundly rejected the Marxist Democrats’ politics of envy, atrophy and redistribution. Now these independent voters are getting to see a steady stream of confirmation of just why they made the right decision.

No, it’s not Governor Palin or Rush Limbaugh that are digging themselves into a hole.

The Marxist Democrats crassly attempted to exploit tragedy for political advantage even before any facts were known. And now that it has been determined that Jared Loughner was a Marxist who did not watch TV news or listen to talk radio and therefore certainly was not influenced by Fox News, Governor Palin, Rush Limbaugh or any other pundit or commentator, the left is once again exposed for the devious, unprincipled, Godless Marxists that they are.

The milktoast libs constantly attack Palin, declare her career "dead" for the 10th time, and libel her about Tucson.

Palin defends herself, and Sally Quinn goes into her High School mode - "its not about you!!"

Pathetic.

Well said Sally. Sarah Palin shows all the traits of a mean, opportunistic human being who is in for the money. She is not qualified to be a leader and the press should stop providing her the platform she does not deserve.
