Viagra and The New Testament

As Americans, we are both sexual and spiritual people. We carry the New Testament on Sunday Morning and our Viagra pills on Saturday afternoon. Even the Google searches speak of a nation torn between sex and spirituality as pornography and religion top the search engine queries in both the Red and Blue States.

American 21st Century living proposes a platform where both stand juxtaposed in perfect equilibrium. Although the Europeans claim the patent on sexual liberation and openness, our sexual mores incorporate a cosmic and religious thread that facilitates a healthy discipline in order to prevent what all Americans reject in respect to all activities or philosophies; extremes. Are we as a society sexually oppressed? I would rather speculate that we err on the side of sexual caution.

As we historically contextualize the rise and fall of great empires, one common factor resonates throughout; the lack of self-control particularly in the area of sexual conduct.
Is sex outside of marriage a sin? Yes. Sex outside of marriage speaks of the most intimate of human relationships without institutional and divine framework necessary for efficacy.

On the other hand when self righteous decorum easily points at the failure of those who fall short of God’s glory, Americans embrace Grace and forgiveness far quicker than sentences of eternal perdition. As a people, we must identify sexual misconduct including adultery and fornication as an egregious violation of God’s order. Yet we must also oppose judgmental indignation, legalism and self-righteousness. The reason why Clinton’s poll numbers skyrocketed after his adulterous scandal speaks more of a nation who found more in common with his weakness than with his strengths.

At the end of the day, our public lives and our private behavior must complement each other. Although the sexual lives of leaders must meet the moral and God ordained standards embraced by almost all major religions, one promise assures us that repentance precedes forgiveness and our relationship with God supersedes our public approval. Our sexual lives stand in judgment not by a court of pubic opinion but in the private chambers and hallowed halls of a Righteous God.

We are sexual, spiritual, forgiving and private but still tempted by a public exposing of one’s sin as long as it's not our own.

"That means that the right needs to be less moralistic, and the left needs to show a bigger respect for religion and morality. Can we do this? I hope so."

Nice sentiment, but the Right a) doesn't represent all religious people, and b) sells the respect liberals do accord them way short because the Religious Right considers itself disrespected when everyone doesn't convert and blindly obey.

Have your religion, just remember.

When you mix religion and politics,
You get politics.

I am not sure what you are talking about. I have not posted anything on children.

I am the one who cautioned you on making personally threatenting and intimidating comments, directed at specific people who post here. But you got mad at that, too.

I just wonder why you are so angry, and hope that you do not go too far one day, and get yourself into some real trouble.

Daniel, Daniel, Daniel,

Hmmm, the proposed Bill "Out of Control" Clinton pill would be akin to the current EDS drugs (effective up to 36 hrs). It would not be a vaccine although that sure would be a boon for my Catholic Church!!

BTW, how is everything in the Borg Collective????

Rohit:

Sorry, but I reject your basic premise. Religion and morality have nothing whatever to do with each other. Respect is a two-way street, and I do not and will not give it to those who disrespect me. I live among Christians and other religious people every day even though I am an atheist - I have no problem with them until they try to use their religion to affect my life or the life of my family.

I don't want the right to be less moralistic, I want them to be more moral. Lees war, no denial of equal rights to all Americans, etc. I see no convergence any time soon.

Full disclosure: I have been married and faithful to the same woman for 37 years.

An important fact to remember is that unlike most animals, the human child requires about 22 years of nurture before she or he is ready to face the world. That means that we need stable families to provide that nurture. If a married man has an affair with an office mate, and they are both loving and consenting adults, does that make it OK? It does not because he is betraying his marriage vows, and his children are under threat. When we think of Clinton's infidelity, we think of "right wing" America bashing him and some of us may feel like telling right wing Americans to go to hell. But the pain caused to his wife and daughter were real. And the disruption of the political process was also real. Had it not been for Monica, Clinton would have made much more progress in his second term. I admire him both as man and president, but I am not going to say that the stuff with Monica was OK - it wasn't, and we need to be clear about this. Note that given their respective positions, technically Clinton indulged in sexual harrassment, going after a woman who was a subordinate. The head of Red Cross was just fired for behaviour similar to Clinton's.

Also, unless there is going to be a pogrom to eliminate religious Americans, they are going to stay around, and vote. And remember that America is a democracy, the right and the left BOTH have the right to a say in its policies. The two wings of America need to respect each other - otherwise America is in deep trouble.

That means that the right needs to be less moralistic, and the left needs to show a bigger respect for religion and morality. Can we do this? I hope so.

This doesn't make any sense at all. We need to find a way to NORMAL sex. That means consensual sex between loving partners in a normalized social context. It does not mean pornography, guilty sex, secret sex, or sex between young people in risky situations and circumstances. In Scandinavian countries, according to the UN study on the welfare of children, young people have their first sexual experiences at a younger age than American kids, yet there are one-fifth as many pregnancies in this age group. Why? Because sex between young people is normal-- that's what young people do, remember? How about sex between old people who have been married to others for twenty-five years? Does this have to wreck long-standing relationships and destroy families? Not if late-in-life adventures are seen, and celebrated for what they are: late-in-life adventures. If we could take sex off the video and put it in the bedroom where it belongs, and feel good about it, and be happy when you can enjoy the gift of it, we would be a healthier nation. The religious hypocrites don't contribute anything positive to the discussion.

Paganplace:

Stop laughing! Sex is serious business. Sex is a business? Can be made into a business?

Yeah, sure and you bet. "Quite efficacious." :)

*laughing.* :)

I just get a kick out of that use of the word 'Efficacy.'

"Was it good for you?"

"Quite efficacious." :)

I'd say that, too, and get away with it, which totally makes me wonder why people think this couldn't be a real marriage. :)

But, on a serious note, that really is something that's become part of at least the American idea of marriage: it's not a ritual gateway to *sex,* it's about establishing and supporting enduring relationships. Family.

Personally, I think coming to terms with that is actually a much better idea than getting so freaked out about people having sex that you want to make a pill to 'stop' it.

Personally, Concerned, I would say that out of the hundreds of millions of Americans who may be sexually-active, more than once a year, even, 1.6 million Plan B sales doesn't tell me 'OMFG! SEX is out of control!' ...it tells me that some people are taking *responsibility* for reproduction, ...preventing a lot of unwanted pregnancies and abortions thereof, and not letting sex be shamed, mystified, and otherwise taken *out* of control by people who want to say 'It's In God's Hands, Whatever The Likely Consequences.'

People do *more,* not *fewer* irresponsible things when they're afraid and kept ignorant.

The new testament is a proved hoax, http://www.hoax-buster.org page 2 "proof"

The Bible is not a valid source of information. You need a new source of facts. Everything based upon a hoax is suspect.

"Sex outside of marriage speaks of the most intimate of human relationships without institutional and divine framework necessary for efficacy."

And this is your brain on Christianity.

Isn't CCNL's comment the most absolutely ridiculous thing you have ever heard? Libido is the problem, so let's get rid of it?

Hmmm, as noted above, it is all about the sex drive aka libido.

I believe 1.6 million Plan B prescriptions were given last year in the USA alone. To say the least, sexual drive/activity/libido is out of control.

There are pills to increase libido, prevent
pregnancies and to kill babies. Since this is all about biology, there should be no reason that an anti-libido pill could not be developed. What should the pill be called: "Save Us from Bill "Out of Control" Clintons" ????

And "Save Us from Bill Clinton" pills should be quite useful for Muslim women/men in eliminating the need for those other three wives.

Since the pharmaceutical companies are not about to do this, the major religions should join forces and do it. I apologize for being blunt, but considering the number of over-sexed, "celibate" clergy we have, these pills would also solve another problem.

Not interested in taking a pill? Then follow the many masterbation techniques readily available via Google- Safe, inexpensive and definitely efficient in eliminating "partner required" libido- Published statistics show "55 vs 38 percent of men vs women (aged 18-59) masturbated on a regular basis" , http://www.123helpme.com/preview.asp?id=26798.

The Catholic/Christian churches simply need to upgrade wet dreams to approved sexual drive control. And again another method to assist hard to control "celibate" clergy.

Bottom line: Eliminate the desire and drive, Eliminate the problems!!!

"Sex outside of marriage speaks of the most intimate of human relationships without institutional and divine framework necessary for efficacy."

Efficacy? Last time the hubby and I got busy, we didn't have to check with any governmental or religous agencies to make sure we were doing it right. We just kind of played it by ear - and other parts. It works just the same as it did before we exchanged rings and vows.

My daughter and her boyfriend are starting to discuss the idea of sharing a last name. I told them that I would not advise marrying anyone until you had lived together for at least a year. There's a lot more to marriage than sex - it's entirely possible to love another person dearly, set the sheets on fire with earth-shattering sex, and not be able to live under the same roof day in and day out. Better to find that out while you can simply gather your belongings and go than after you've made legal obligations that have to be dissolved by lawyers and judges.

PaganPlace,

Regarding marriage as "permission to have sex."

I got married two months ago tomorrow to a man I've been with for 5 years today. I brought him along to a family member's Halloween party last month and a good family friend came up and asked us how married life was. We gave her the same response we give anyone who asks us that question, "About the same as life's been the past 3 years." And she added, "Yeah, but now you can have sex legally." Huh? That's news to us. Guess we've been having some illegal sex all these years.

*chuckle.*

Ok, really.

"Sex outside of marriage speaks of the most intimate of human relationships without institutional and divine framework necessary for efficacy."

So happens my 'divine framework' for the most intimate of human relationships somehow gets by with out institutional supervision.

It'll have to, as I can't marry freely under certain *other* people's 'institutional frameworks.

I think it's this very idea that sex is a shameful thing unless controlled by someone's religious institutions that *cheapens* the whole thing in actual practices, not to mention pressuring people to indulge in false expectations and promises they don't intend to keep: in fact, the *divorce* rate is highest among religious conservatives probably for this very reason.

In my experience, people who think they're 'sinning' anyway, have a tendency to live down to the idea, and I think we need to be more mature about marriage than to set it up as 'Permission to have sex.'

That gets lived down to, too, unfortunately.

Mr. Rodriguez,

"Our sexual lives stand in judgment not by a court of pubic opinion but in the private chambers and hallowed halls of a Righteous God."

Apparently you are so captivated by the subject that "public opinion" became "pubic opinion". Very ineresting indeed!!!

It may be that Europeans are said to be sexually liberated and open while Americans nominally err on the side of caution. But if we can be said to err on the side of caution, it seems to me it's just talking the talk, not walking the walk. I'm pretty sure that comparing the statistics on, say, out of wedlock births, would bear this out.

I agree ! When our public and private lives are not in sync, that is, if we talk the talk, but don't walk the walk, it's just another indication of our innate sinfulness that we struggle with daily. And, of course, God speaks of our "adultery" frequently in Scripture, in case we need another reminder. Speaking of which, I'd like to see us follow the Scriptural principle of private confrontation regarding sin as the first step - one that is so often passed by in today's society.
(And the former English teacher adds that it's "complement" with an "e".)
