Congress: Don't be a bully, repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
Despite public and military support for overturning Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the legislation which bans openly gay service members, political, military and religious leaders cite a variety of objections to changing the law.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) worries that allowing gays to serve openly would impact troop "morale;" Marine Corp Commandant Gen. James Amos says that a policy change may affect "unit cohesion" and "combat effectiveness." Among the religious leaders opposed to overturning Don't Ask, Don't Tell is Catholic Archbishop for the Military Services Timothy J. Broglio, who fears that chaplains would be forced to compromise their principles in accepting "objectively disordered" homosexuality, adding that he "can never condone -even silently -homosexual behavior."
What beliefs are behind banning gays in the military? What's the role of religion in this debate?
Let's see. The American people and the military think "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" needs to be repealed, but Congress won't do it? This Congress is risking becoming a "bully" when it comes to gay, lesbian, bi-sexuals and transgender Americans serving in the military and they need to be told to stop.
We can hardly expect young people to stop bullying their LGBT peers when many of the adults in Congress won't stop a systematic practice that shames and alienates LGBT service members. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" makes policy of the appalling practice of asking members of the military to conceal their sexual orientation as though it were something of which they should be ashamed and that they must hide from their fellow service members and their superiors. Shaming, of course, is a big part of bullying.
This is precisely what is wrong with bullying and with "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" from a theological perspective. No one should be made to feel ashamed of who God created them to be. It's an insult to God as Creator, and a failure of the moral teaching to love your neighbor as yourself. If you love God and neighbor, you won't bully and you'll accept yourself the way God made you, and you'll accept your neighbor for who he or she is as a child of God.
Being true to the way God made you is what made Bishop Jim Swilley, an Atlanta megachurch pastor, tell his congregation on a recent Wednesday night that he's gay. In an interview, he said he was moved by the recent epidemic of suicides among LGBT youth to do so. It's not "Christ-like" Swilley argued, for people to hate someone for being gay. "It's about people being who they are." Amen.
But really, does the Congressional lack of action on repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" conform to the definition of bullying? "Teaching Tolerance," a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center provides a free documentary for schools called "Bullied: A Student, a School, and a Case that Made History". The video and accompanying teacher's guide help students understand what bulling actually is, and why bullying of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender youth takes such a "terrible toll" on those who are bullied.
Let's see how this Congress measures up according to the Teacher Guide that accompanies the documentary.
First, the guide defines bullying. "Bullying happens when someone is subjected to negative actions from one or more people and has a hard time defending him or herself." Among the actions described as "bullying" is "excluding someone from the group."
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" uniquely singles out LGBT service members for different treatment than others in the military. They are certainly "excluded from the group." If they are found out to be gay, they are discharged and each of them certainly has had "a hard time defending him or herself." As Laura Conley and Alex Rothman argue in a recent article, "'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' undermines the United States' moral authority in addition to its national security. It forces gay service members to live a lie in order to defend their country..." When you 'force someone to live a lie' aren't you bullying them into silence?
One of the main goals of the Teaching Tolerance curricula is to cultivate certain virtues in young people so that they will not only learn about historical moments of exclusion or discrimination, but also be motivated to become better people who will fight discrimination wherever they encounter it.
In the guide, the following are listed as goals for the presentation and discussion:
1. Courage and Empathy
2. The Impact of Bullying: Dealing with Discrimination
3. Making History: Standing Up for Justice
Members of Congress need to find their capacity for empathy and act with courage to repeal "Don't' Ask, Don't Tell." LGBT service members have been discharged in the thousands over the nearly two decades of this ill-conceived policy for no other reason than that they are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender. This has not only caused these individuals shame, but also loss of their employment and prevented them from serving their country as they wished to do. Tell me, members of Congress, do you have hearts of stone that you would keep discriminating against people in this way?
Come on, Congress. Deal with real discrimination and stand up for justice. According to a recent poll, "voters overwhelmingly believe--by an 81% to 10% margin--that most members of Congress are more interested in helping their own careers than in helping people." Show the American people that you are more interested in helping people than protecting your turf back home.
Help some people in a real way. Repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." It's the right thing to do, for a lot of good reasons.

Nikos, DADT was wrong and based on fears and anti-gay propaganda which militaries all over the world have proven not to have been true.
You can cut and paste your whole Bible if you want, it wont make this policy just, American, or the will of the people or the will of the troops, or any good for our society.
You and a minority of radical Christians having a religious belief doesn't give you the right to impose that belief so harmfully on so many others.
It's corrosive to our society and harmful to LGBT Americans, particularly in terms of the further lies and defamations the Christian Right uses to delay justice in this matter, while sending the message that LGBT kids are not among those considered full citizens in our own country, even if we put our lives on the line for it.

Gladerunner: Just so you know, I haven't always been a Christian. In fact I was 40 years old when I accepted Christ. I am now 75. When I received the Holy Spirit, my mind was opened to understand God's Word. Before then, I was just as confused as you when reading the Bible. Scripture tells us "...the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Corinthians 2:14)
That is why you stated, ".....if in fact 'God's ways are a mystery?'". But a Christian begins to understand God's ways as evidenced by the following scriptures.

FYI... Anyone that claims to be an atheist, and actively debates scriptural meaning and religious doctrine has more than likely considered 'accepting god's amazing grace.'
They (we) have already thoroughly considered it, studied it, and then declined the offer.
Have you ever considered ditching your superstition, your faith in ancient fairy tales and mythology?
Have you ever considered asking your religion the tough questions and not just taking "because we said so" or "it's a matter of faith" as an answer?
Have you ever asked your priests/parsons/vicars why we need them at all if in fact 'God's ways are a mystery?'

Wow, nikos, really? That was the problem? She may have partaken of the Lord’s Supper unworthily? Otherwise she’d still be dancing in the aisles? THIS is what you believe?
She was not healed because she suffered from the combination of a vary healthy body, heart, lungs, cancer free, but combined with a sad case of severe dementia, an ailment/failure of the higher processes of the brain, in bible times this would be considered demon possession.
Do people die of cancer only because they didn’t properly partake of the Lord’s Supper, or is it because nearly everyone who lives long enough will contract one form of cancer or another, many of these cancers being either immune or resistant to known treatments, so it spreads and they die. Which do you really, really think more likely?
As you know when you ask god for something there are several possible results. 1. He will act on your prayer. 2. He will answer ‘not yet’. 3. He will say ‘no’ if it is not consistent with his master plan.
Why didn’t your list of reasons for the lack of healing include ‘It was simply not god’s will’? Curious.
The problem with that option is that it negates the belief that god will answer all our prayers as asked. That all we have to do is say the right things, burn the right incense, properly sip the grape juice and righteously swallow the cracker and he will answer our prayers.
In your religion our prayers are ALWAYS secondary to his will, and we do not, cannot know his will.
This is why, in your belief system that bad things happen to good people, it is why you are constantly calling out to your god and getting what sounds exactly like no response.
The fact of the matter is this. Bad things happen to good and bad people, good and bad people suffer from injury, grief, and disease. Some will heal, some will not, regardless of how many people join hands and pray for their recovery. In other words, the outcome is identical to the same scenario when there is no prayer/proper performance of rites.
In your religion if a person who prays/is prayed for heals, then it’s declared a miracle of divine intervention. If they do not heal, it was simply because of human error, as you suggest, or God had other plans, bigger, mysterious plans that we will never understand. It’s a win-win for your religion and your prophets and priests.
It’s snake oil writ large, and you're standing in line to fork over your money.

My ability to judge what kind of persons God wants us to be is based on the very scriptures that I posted. It is also based on the following verses from 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."
I didn't know your grandmother so I can't answer as to why she wasn't healed. Was she truly a born again Christian or was she merely a Christian in name only? Did she have any unconfessed sins? Did she partake in the Lord's supper unworthily? The following verses place some conditions on being healed.
James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
1 Corinthians 11:27-31 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
Finally, Jesus said in Matthew 24:6-8, "And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows."
Satan is still the prince of this present world. As long as he is alive and not so well, we will have all kinds of sorrows and catastrophes. God allows it, but He can use it to bring people to their senses and repentance. The day is coming when God will finally put it all to an end. He will judge the heavens and the earth. Jesus Christ is coming again. He is not slack in fulfilling this promise, but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

I guess homosexuality is a divine error, and I blame God. It's a design problem that results in many babies being born with unclear gender information, and you'd think that after thousands and thousands of years God would have corrected it by now. But this God never does anything. It's almost as if He isn't there,
However, it's ridiculous to call it immoral. I think its more evidence that God is either a lazy incompetent, or dead.

Who are you to judge what a person was 'created to be'? I've known people who asked Jesus to take away all kinds of afflictions, mental, emotional, as well as physical, yet not a one of them has had their prayers actually answered. How can we expect god to heal homosexual tendencies when he won't even heal birth defects and child killing diseases? My own grandmother (and dozens of her friends) prayed every day for her dementia to stop taking her thoughts away, she lived twenty more years in a bed, fed with a tube, in a stupor, couldn't even clean herself or recognize her only child. But now you expect an uncaring Jesus to make homosexual tendencies go way? Why would he even bother? Tsunamis and earthquakes don't even rouse him to take action.

This false teacher, Thistlethwaite, often quotes scripture (mostly out of context) when it suits her purpose. I wonder if she would care to give us her interpretation of the following verses from Roman 1:18-32. It hardly appears that God created us to be as those pointed out in these scriptures.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

It will shock me if the repeal this law. The religious base in the country are too powerful and want to condem the gay community. Their votes, the Tea Party crowd will never vote for someone who favors changing this law.
The ignorance still remains that they can "just get over it with prayer". Give me a break!

The Lord no more created some to be homosexuals than He did others to be adulterers, fornicators, liars, thieves, murderers, coveters, etc. That was the purpose of my quoting scriptures ~ to show that it's all about mankinds' sin nature. We're all guilty of infractions to God's immutable laws and His desire on how we should live our lives. That is why Jesus died on the cross ~ to take our sins upon Himself and to impart the Holy Spirit into our lives so that we can subsequently have the power to change our behavior to conform to His will. As Christians, we should no longer have the tendency to heed to the desires of the flesh that are contrary to our new spiritual nature.
I served in the U.S. Navy almost 60 years ago and there were, doubtless, gays within our ranks back then. For the most part, they were closet gays. They didn't bother me and I didn't bother them. I was my own sinner under some of the other categories.
So, I'm not into this discussion to debate DADT. I'm in it to expose Thistlethwaite as a false teacher. She claims to be a Christian and a pastor, so, she should be upholding the Word of God and winning souls for deliverance from their fleshy desires, whether it be homosexuality or any of the other aforementioned sins, that are contrary to God's perfect will for our lives.
