Ecumenical Democrats

During most of the 20th century, the Democratic Party was made up of Catholics and Jews in the Northeast and Baptists in the South. The leaders and the members of the party attended services and practiced their religion, but they did not talk about religion in the party except in the most general terms.

In these pre-ecumenical days, any discussion of religion would have been divisive. As the big tent party, Democrats stressed what united members not what divided them. Secularists found this silence comforting but misread it as an ideological commitment rather than a pragmatic political decision.

Lyndon Johnson’s civil rights laws were the beginning of the end of this coalition. Nixon and Wallace played the race card in the South, but Republicans also used religious language to woo Southerners. Democrats were at a loss on how to respond to this religious rhetoric. Jews as a minority were fearful of “Christian talk.” Catholics, who on arriving in America had been treated as idolatrous foreigners, had been trained to use natural law philosophy in political talk because their faith was not acceptable to mainstream America. And secular elites thought religion was for dummies.

At the presidential candidates forum on religion, values and poverty, Democrats decided that it was time to show America that Democrats can be good Christians, inspired by Christian values, but not willing to impose their faith on others. The candidates showed themselves to be tempered, moderate and ecumenical. The forum was sponsored by Sojourners (a liberal evangelical group) and Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good (even though none of the candidates was Catholic).

Many of the questions from the moderator were personal and obnoxiously intrusive. “What was the greatest sin you ever committed?” “Did your faith help you deal with your husband’s infidelity?” This has nothing to do with the intersection of faith and politics.

Faith matters in this country. The country will be uncomfortable with a party that is uncomfortable with faith. But the country will also be uncomfortable with any faith that is not respectful of others who believe differently. America has embraced ecumenism not relativism. Can the Democrats do the same?

Pope: Sunday Worship a "Necessity" For All
September 17, 2007 | From theTrumpet.com

Pope Benedict XVI says your life depends upon worshiping on Sunday.

"Sine dominico non possumus!" "Without Sunday [worship] we cannot live!" Pope Benedict xvi declared during a mass on September 9 at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.

Speaking on the final day of his three-day visit to Austria, the German pope voiced a strong call for Christians to revive Sunday keeping as an all-important religious practice.

"Give the soul its Sunday, give Sunday its soul," he chanted before a rain-soaked crowd of 40,000.

Benedict said that Sunday, which he stated has its origin as "the day of the dawning of creation," was "also the church's weekly feast of creation."

Warning against the evils of allowing Sunday to become just a part of the weekend, the pope said people needed to have a spiritual focus during the first day of the week, or else leisure time would just become wasted time.

Sunday worship, he warned, was not just a "precept" to be casually adhered to, but a "necessity" for all people.

In the opening greeting, the archbishop of Vienna said a movement in Austria had been initiated to protect "Sunday from tendencies to empty [it] of its meaning."

In Austria, most businesses are restricted from operating on Sunday. However, some business groups are pressuring the government to be allowed to open, a move Roman Catholic groups vehemently oppose.

During Benedict's trip to Austria, he called for Europe to look to its Christian roots, to trust in God and to defend traditional values.

The pope has been very vocal about Europe's Christian-or Catholic-roots, and is pushing to have them included in the European Constitution. Although laws concerning Sunday worship are currently determined by individual nations, look for the European Union to eventually gain jurisdiction over the work week-which is one big reason the Catholic Church is so intimately involved with the evolution of the EU. For more on the Catholic Church and Europe, read "The Pope Trumpets Sunday" by the Trumpet's editor in chief. .

-----------------------

"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come (the return of Christ), except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exaltheth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God." 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4

"If protestants would follow the Bible, they should worship God on the Sabbath Day. In keeping the Sunday they are following a law of the Catholic Church."--Albert Smith, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, replying for the cardinal in a letter of Feb. 10, 1920.

Does the Papacy acknowledge changing the seventh-day Sabbath? It does. The Catechismus Romanus was commanded by the Council of Trent and published by the Vatican Press, by order of Pope Pius V, in 1566. This catechism for the priests says: "It pleased the church of God, that the religious celebration of the Sabbath day should be transferred to 'the Lord's day.'--Catechism of the Council of Trent (Donovan's translation, 1867), part 3, chap. 4, p. 345. The same, in slightly different wording is in the McHugh and Callan translation (1937 ed.), p. 402. "Question: How prove you that the Church hath power to command feasts and holydays? "Answer: By the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of; and therefore they fondly contradict themselves, by keeping Sunday strictly, and breaking most other feasts commanded by the same Church."--Henry Tuberville, An Abridgment of the Christian Doctrine (1833 approbation), p. 58. (Same statement in Manual of Christian Doctrine, ed. by Daniel Ferris {1916 ed.}, p. 67.) "Question: Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept? "Answer: Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her; she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday, the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority." Stephen Keenan, A Doctrinal Catechism (3d ed.), p. 174. "The Catholic Church,...by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday."--The Catholic Mirror, official organ of Cardinal Gibbons, Sept. 23, 1893. "Question: Is Saturday the 7th day according to the Bible & the Ten Commandments? Answer: I answer yes. "Question: Is Sunday the first day of the week & did the Church change the 7th day--Saturday--for Sunday, the 1st day: Answer: "I answer yes." "Question: Did Christ change the day? Answer: I answer no! Faithfully yours, "J. Card. Gibbons"--Gibbons autograph letter.

"But in vain they do worship me, teaching for the doctrines the commandments of men." Matthew 15:9

Receiving the mark of the beast or the seal of God in the mind or the hand is not a literal "mark" to be put on our foreheads or our hand but it is our consent to whom we will obey. "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey? Romans 6:16

Concerned The Christian Now Liberated writes:
"The citizens of the USA send their thanks to Canada for their help in fighting the war on terror on the Afghan front. Hopefully some day Canadians will thank the USA for fighting the war on terror on the Iraq/Iran front."

Unfortunately your government "thanked" us by slapping illegal duties on our lumber and grain exports and spreading the lie that teh 9/11 attackers entered the US from Canada. With friends like that...

As for "protecting us" by invading Iraq, please don't do us any more favours. The failure of Bush and his cronies to stay focused on the Afghan mission has undermined our security, and left Canadian troops fighting a resugent Taliban. So no thanks on that one, I'm afraid.

Mr. Mark,

Hmmm, references to all the Clinton "love"?

Nooky (i.e. the marriage act) is simple biology that becomes an addiction to some. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done save putting it a window and slamming it. (My Aunt Katherine's recommendation for "uncontrollables" like the love of your life sometimes known as "Willy the Weasel".)

Hmmm, I wonder how Fred Thompson measures up morally and ethically?

Dear Concerned -

Yes, Bill Clinton did eventually confess to having oral sex with Lewinsky. Big deal. As usual, the lie was worse than the act itself.

Now, maybe bush & Cheney will confess that they knowingly lied about just about everything when they took us into Iraq. Of course, their death toll in Iraq pales when compared to the death toll caused by Clinton's BJ, correct?

Hillary keeps Bill around for political reasons? How do you know that?

Joe Liebermann is an embarassment to the Dem Party. He should just switch parties and be done with it. I'd pay real money if he'd just stop with the self-righteous whining.

Bill Clinton left office with an approval rating over 70%. He was at 70% the day the impeachment articles came down, and his apprval rating grew during the course of the BS trial. Let's not forget that Bill was ACQUITTED in the Senate.

The most-recent poll I saw has him sitting there still. He's actually better liked than Saint Ronnie, believe it or not. Dp a bit of research and get back to me, OK?

Where does Bill get his nooky? It's embarassing to read how hung up you are on sex. As far as Bill's BJ, I think comedian Chris Rock said it best at the time when he observed that the country was at peace, the economy was booming and most people were doing great. This led Chris to opine, "If Clinton doesn't deserve a perq like a BJ, who does?"

Mr. Mark,

Mrs. Clinton keeps "billy-boy" for political reasons in a marriage of convenience. Such is love!!!!

And it is great that you put so much emphasis on the morality and integrity of our political leaders. Others think the same way.

Newt got voted out of office, thank God.

Representative Hyde was an embarrassment to the respect-for-life groups after his confession.

"Billy-boy" never did confess or did he? "I never had sexual relations with that woman?" And I have no idea how my "boys" got all over that woman's dress.

Joe Liebermann you have to like but he was not running for the "bully pulpit".

Rudy Giuliani is already off my presidential potential list.

"Billy-boy" is still loved by the country? Give me a break!!! Not even Hillary puts him in the love column.

Hmmm, I wonder where he gets his "nooky" these days?

Religion and its sets of laws like the Ten Commandments are very important in politics. Gore basically lost his presidential bid because Clinton violated the Sixth and Eighth Commandments by his "open zipper"/denial policies. Enough Democratic voters were so disgusted with said policy and the lack of response to it by people like Gore, that they voted Republican.

The On Faith panelists, and the commenting posters, should try writing without using the word "faith."

"Faith," as in "people of faith" is devoid of meaning (unless you think it means "Republicanism").

Using "faith" in your writing merely obscures whatever meaning you may be trying to communicate - just as an overlay of butter obscures the texture of the underlying bread.

Concerned writes:

"Actually, had Gore taken "billy boy" to task for abusing his power, disgracing his family and taking advantage of an intern, I would have voted for the creator of the internet."

Gee, Concerned. Who was Gore's running mate? Why, Joe Lieberman, the guy who took to the floor of the Senate to take Pres Clinton to task, just like you wanted.

I don't believe for a second that you would have voted for Gore.

BTW - IF you read the snopes debunking, you'll notice that Gore never said that he was "the" creator of the internet. He said that he "helped to create the internet." It's so sad that even after you got busted for repeating the RW lie that "Gore said he invented the internet," that you still shamelessly attempt to put words in Gore's mouth, and to attempt to leave the impression that this is some small semantic point, that the intent was the same on Gore's part, ie: he was taking credit for something he didn't do. That's cheap, Concerned. Cheap and transparent.

One final thought: read to the end of the snopes piece and you'll find this:
"In May, 2005, the organizers of the Webby Awards for online achievement honored Al Gore with a lifetime achievement award for three decades of contributions to the internet. "He is indeed due some thanks and consideration for his early contributions," said Vint Cerf.

Mr Cerf is known as "the father of the internet."

Concerned prattles on:
"Actually the "open zipper" policy of "billy boy" is very much on target since it violates one of religion's great laws, Thou shalt not commit adultery. And having this policy in the White House again is very disturbing even if he not the president. The embarrassment to the country and his family would be the same."

Were you equally outraged at Poppy Bush's long-standing affair, or did you - like the media - fail to notice it? How about Gingrich, Hyde and the other adulterous self-righteous Rs who went after Clinton for a BJ? Did they bring equal disgrace to the country? How about Rudy Giuliani? Do you think he should drop out of the R race for pres because he's an enthusiastic adulterer?

"And why did Gore lose the election? "billy-boy's" "open zipper" policy."

Gore lost because the SCOTUS ordered Florida to stop counting the votes and handed the election to bush. In addition, Gore made a tactical mistake by not having Clinton campaign with him. The country loved Clinton and they still love him. Had he made more appearances with Gore, it might have been a landslide in Gore's favor.

Now, go and sin no more, Concerned (You shall not bear false witness...).

Anonymous asks; "hermit, can you explain your fascination (as a canadian) with claiming expertise then criticising all things American? what makes this topic particularly yours?"

First of all I don't claim expertise on all things, although I do try to know something about the topics I comment on, and to avoid commenting on those of which I am too ignorant to have an opinion. If you think I'm wrong about something by all means post the evidence and your argument, and if you're convincing enough I'll admit my error and change my mind. Can you say the same?

Second, I certainly don't think this, or any other, topic is "particularly" mine. I have an interest because American politics has an indirect, but powerful, effect on my life in Canada. As one of our Prime Ministers once famously said, living next to the United States is like being " like the mouse sleeping next to an elephant. No matter how peaceful or good natured is the elephant, we feel ever single twitch and movement…And God help us if he should ever roll over in his sleep!"

And I hope I don't come across as criticizing all things American; truth is there is much I admire about America, and if I sound otherwise at times it is only because I am disappointed in how far the current administration has moved away from those principles which have inspired my admiration.

"But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

I must disagree with the honorable Reverand Reese in his assertion that America has embraced ecumenism. While I also disagree with the dominant misperception of those on the political Left that America is under siege from politicized evangelical hordes marching in lockstep, clearly militant, anti-modernist, moralistic, hawkish Protestant evangelism is on the rise in this country, despite that these conservative neopuritans like to think of themselves as an embattled minority.

But I agree with the good Reverand that faith matters in this country to the degree that every politician understands the necessity of at least paying lip service to the piety of most American voters. It is nearly a requirement for all U.S. offices, from dog catcher to president, to advertise belief. No citizen in America today can stand for public office without first pledging allegiance to the king of kings.

Professing religion is an absolute political necessity, whether one believes or not. It is this understanding to which the Democratic Party has finally come.

Posted by: DoctorTodd | June 6, 2007 4:27 PM

Rev. Reese wonders whether Democrats can embrace ecumenism rather than relativism. I would argue that's what they have been doing, and the reluctance of Democrats to talk about religion reflects that. As soon as you start putting questions about faith to candidates you risk establishing a de-facto religious test for office. It's the Republicans who have, for almost thirty years now, used religion as a wedge, if not a club, to divided and bully candidates and voters alike.

I hope the Dems can resist the temptation to folow the same kind of path; even if they start out with good intentions the injection of claims of divine approval for one political policy, or worse party, over all others presents the worst kind of tyranny. If dissent form that opinion, or opposition to that party becomes equivalent in people's minds to rebellion against God there is little room left for free and open debate or dissent. That's not good for any country aspiring to democracy and individual liberty.

> 1. Saddam, his sons and major henchmen have been deleted. Saddam's bravado about WMD was one of his major mistakes.

Okay, I'll give you this one. Saddam was a tin-horn dictator with delusions of Godhood. His sons were worse. Although there is evidence that shows that his own scientists were deluding him about the progress of their WMD research to save their own lives.

> 2. Iran has been contained. (besides fighting the civil war in Bahgdad, that is the main reason we are in Iraq. And yes oil continues to flow from the region fueling the global economy and your Prius).

Read the news lately? Iran has NOT been contained. This is why Dick Cheney and others are rattling sabers against them. Oil continues to flow, but at $3 a gallon. When Clinton left office, people were complaining about $1.50 a gallon.

> 3. Libya has become civil.

Mostly due to the work done by British diplomats prior to 2001.

> 4. North Korea is still uncivil but is contained.

Aside from occasionally shooting off missiles in the general direction of Japan, that is. Oh, and testing their nukes.

> 5. Northern Ireland is finally at peace (Thanks to the Patriot Act that stopped foreign funding of the IRA plus finally some rational political leaders).

Actually, the Belfast Agreement was signed in 1998, under Clinton. So, King George can't take credit for that one.

> 6. The Jews and Palestinians are being separated by walls (analogous to the two Czech republics). Hopefully the walls will follow the 1948 UN accords).

Oh yeah, how's that working for them? The Czech Republic and Slovakia separated peacefully, without a single drop of blood shed. I think it's foolish and naive that you're comparing the Israeli/Palestinian situation to the Velvet Revolution.

> 7. Bin Laden has been cornered under a rock in Western Pakistan since 9/11.

And this is a GOOD thing? We should have captured him when we had him cornered at Tora Bora!

> 8. Fanatical Islam has basically been contained to the Middle East but a wall between India and Pakistan would be a plus for world peace.

Tell that to the French, British, and Spaniards, who are contending with Islamism on their home soil.

> 8. The stock markets and economies around the globe continue to show good growth and opportunity for the common stock holders.

Yeah, as long as you can afford to own stock. Considering that millions of Americans are one paycheck or illness away from economic disaster, I wouldn't brag too much about this.

> 9. And conscientious US citizens have prevented two major terror attacks on the Homeland.

Which plots were those? The Jersey Jihadists that thought they'd drive up to an Army base and start shooting? The ones that didn't realize that a pipeline has multiple cutoff valves, and that jet fuel doesn't burn very well? Or the ones that planted Lite-Brites around major cities to advertise a cartoon? Fortunately, there hasn't been an attack - because look how well the Government performed after Hurricane Katrina and the recent tornadoes in Kansas.

> And who were these terrorists? Followers of that hallucinating, illiterate Arab, Mohammed, his plagiarizing, koranic scribes and their Book of Death.

Yeah, and Eric Rudolph was going the Lord's work by blowing up abortion clinics, gay bars, and Olympic Plaza. :p

Thanks for the very insightful post, Mr. Mark. Might I add that the salacious TV programs are equally popular in all the states, red as well as blue.

We have to get past the notion that the only valuable people are sinless ones. This doesn't mean we approve of sin. It means we need to recognize that we are all mixtures of virtue and vice, weakness and strength. And we need most of all to see that private sins are different in kind from public ones, and they're especially different from sins against the common good.

Unfortunately, the notion of the common good seems to have died out completely in our political debates. It was central to the discussions when the Constitution was formulated. And it was central to FDR's populism. Unfortunately, there are no Washingtons and FDRs in sight these days. What we have is a president who is likely to pardon a very high-level perjuror, a man who seems to think that the only sins are the private ones. Woe, woe, woe.

Pandering to those voters who vote based on religious belief is an American tradition. The democrats are simply pandering just like the republicans do. What percent of elected officials, do you think, are actually atheists who lie about their beliefs?

Analysts say a candidate who doesn't accept any religious belief in god and says so, could never be elected to high office.

We all know from polls and experience that the most demographically intelligent people on the planet do not believe in god, or belong to any religion, and they don't hestitate to say so honestly.

So, one conclusion we can draw from the current political climate is that the most intelligent and most honest Americans are not suitable for election to high office in the U.S. today.

Perhaps this accounts, in part, for the current state of the nation?

Thank you!

Wow! Concerned the X-Xian rails against Hillary Clinton's efforts to keep her marriage together. Just another case of blatant Republic hypocrisy.

The Rs speak of faith and family values, yet their political hero is Saint Ronnie Reagan, our only divorced president (who was cheating on his first wife when he hooked up with Nancy), a man who had little to do with his kids and who rarely attended church services.

Funny how the party that harps about the "sanctity of marriage" and "family values" is littered with adulterers like Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, John McCain, Bob Barr, Newt Gingrich, Henry Hyde, Bob Livingston and Rudy Giuliani (not to mention the adulterous RW talking heads like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Gary Bauer). There seems to be a fascination with Fred Thompson and his current trophy wife. Yet these GOP "leaders" are given a pass for their Republic-defined "immoral" activities while the Clintons are villified for working to keep their marriage and family together through thick and thin.

While we're at it, let's not forget how the Republics love to rail against Hollywood and its ill effect on our country. Yet, strangely, all of the Hollywood types-turned-politician seem to be Republics: Reagan, Sonny Bono, Ah-nold, the afore-mentioned Fred T and others (go ahead - try to come up with a similar list of actors-turned Dem politician. You can't do it.)

The hypocrisy is staggering.

The big question is this: why are Republic voters SO hung up on sex and adultery? The Oval Office has been littered with adulterers from both sides of the fence: JFK, Wilson and FDR from the Dem side spring to mind, as do Thomas Jefferson and others of diverse political persuasions. Are we really ready to hold adultery up as THE disqualifying factor in our presidential candidates? Would we really have been better off without Jefferson and FDR? Are we better off with the only-married-once disaster currently occupying the People's House?

Think about it.

Mrs. Clinton's faith is not "god-based" but political. She should have divorced "Billy-Boy" but that would have ruined her political future. Or would it have?

She also needs to have some sex therapy. Faking it would have saved the country significant money, time and embarrassment. And then maybe "Billy-boy" would have taken out OBL having his "billy-brain" in his skull and not his pants.

And if she does become president, are we going to have to deal with the "open-zipper" policy again?
