Neither Minister nor Saint

My faith motivates me to be interested in politics. The Hebrew prophets and Jesus eloquently express God’s concern for the poor, the sick and the powerless. Jesus and the prophets tell me that my concern should be for justice and peace.

My faith, however, does not tell me what government policies and programs will best serve the cause of justice and peace. In other words, I get my values from the Gospel, but I have to use my head to find programs to implement these values. And in the real world, I know that there are no perfect programs, and even if there were, it is politically unrealistic to think that such programs will receive unanimous consent.

Politics involves negotiations, compromises and coalition building. Once I settle on a policy or program, I look for allies and I don’t really care what values motivate them. This is why the Catholic bishops could work with the Civil Liberties Union against capital punishment and with the Moral Majority against abortion.

In the same way, when looking at presidential candidates, I don’t care what religion they profess but I do care about what public policies and programs they support. I also care about whether they will be able to deliver on their promises.

In voting for president, I am not looking for a minister or a saint. I am looking for someone who can move our country in the direction of justice and peace.

Father Reese,

"In voting for president, I am not looking for a minister or a saint. I am looking for someone who can move our country in the direction of justice and peace."

Then you'll have to vote for the Democratic nominee.

Justice and peace are not on offer from the Republicans.

"Moses" Baum,

Bible "thumping" is being revised. It started about 200 years ago when religious brainwashing began to be evaluated by many exegetes. Gone now are the "pwtfft"s and their ugly counterparts along with physical resurrections, ascensions, assumptions, miracles and atonement theology.

Again as per John D. Crossan, an On Faith panelist and NT exegete:

(from his book, "Who is Jesus" co-authored with Richard Watts)

"Moreover, an atonement theology that says God sacrifices his own son in place of humans who needed to be punished for their sins might make some Christians love Jesus, but it is an obscene picture of God. It is almost heavenly child abuse, and may infect our imagination at more earthly levels as well. I do not want to express my faith through a theology that pictures God demanding blood sacrifices in order to be reconciled to us."

"Traditionally, Christians have said, 'See how Christ's passion was foretold by the prophets." Actually, it was the other way around. The Hebrew prophets did not predict the events of Jesus' last week; rather, many of those Christian stories were created to fit the ancient prophecies in order to show that Jesus, despite his execution, was still and always held in the hands of God."

"In terms of divine consistency, I do not think that anyone, anywhere, at any time, including Jesus, brings dead people back to life."

TO ANONYMOUS AND THE REST OF HUMANITY: Have you ever thought about taking the bible as a whole and seeing that the message, God's Plan for all of humanity, part of which is God becoming one of us, is what God is trying to get thru to us. Sometimes we seem to get so caught up in the details, that we sometimes even refuse to think that there might be the big picture, God's salvation of the entire human race and the complete renewal of all creation. Being a christian is suppose to be carrying on the work begun by Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Jesus said, "I have not come to abolish the law but to fulfill the law", and if we have listened to what He taught, the "law" is LOVE. Isn't it interesting that since God is LOVE, PURE LOVE, then what Jesus was trying to teach us is that God, Himself, is the LAW. When Jesus said, "Judge not, lest ye be judged", do you think He was kidding or being serious? When Jesus taught us in the Lord's Prayer, "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us" and then went on to tell us that it is a Divine Equation, do you think He was trying to be as direct as possible about it? When Jesus said, "All power and authority have been given unto me", do you think He was being serious considering that we thru our first earthly parents gave in to satan? Remember God knows what He is doing and He knew about the fall before it happened and it is part of His Plan, TOTAL VICTORY. One thing about the original apostles, even though they sure seemed to be in the dark about most things, one thing that they did "get" was, "These are hard sayings". Watered down christianity is not christianity at all, God choses who He choses and I have been chosen to proclaim the "gospel", by the way "gospel" means "Good News" and that "Good News" is for all of humanity not just some. Some people seem to be content with good-enough news, well good-enough news is terrible news, by the way what I mean by good-enough news is, as long as I get to the "good place" and this sure does seem to be what some of the people that call themselves "christian" are contented with. God is not contented with that, His Plan is for ALL OF HUMANITY, the captives shall be released, the dead shall rise. The "captives", those that built their own hell to occupy, the "dead", those in "spiritual death" whether still breathing or not. The True, Living, Triune, Triumphant God is a searcher of hearts and minds, not of religious affiliations or lack thereof. Some things to think about. Take care, see you in the Kingdom. Sincerely, Thomas Paul Moses Baum.

Does anyone know? When Jesus comes again on a cloud to claim the His throne will there be FREE ELECTIONS? The answer is obvious, NO!

Thus democracy, the whole idea of people controlling their own destiny is ridiculous. There's just one thing left to do. Find the true religion and turn the destiny of man over to it's high holy one. That's been done already.

Matthew 16:18 (Jesus speaking)
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

AND

Matthew 16:19 (Jesus speaking)
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Notice that Matthew 16:18 dose not say churches.

It's the pope, successor to St Peter who shall run the "kingdom of God, Earth" while we await the return of Jesus. And he has the arbitrary power to condemn anyone to hell. Has he condemned all non Roman Catholics to hell? He has no requirement to announce his actions.

Lucky for us the Bible is a proved hoax.

Father Reese's comments remind me of growing up Roman Catholic and attending a Jesuit college prep school in Arizona. It also reminds me of the differences between Roman Catholicism and Mormonism (I was looking at the latter as the result of an attraction to a Mormon female). While there are many doctrinal and practical differences between the two religions, the one that relates to this topic is the Catholics' belief in social justice and the lack of such beliefs by the LDS church. While I consider myself an agnostic now, I think the Roman Catholics have the better half of this argument--but there is growing evidence that the better half is being ignored by conservative politicians and their fundamentalist (including Mormon) supporters.

What's this?! You are not following the evangelical mantra:

(1) All issues are moral issues.

(2) All moral issues are black and white.

(3) God tells me the white and black side of each issue.

(4) So, do as I say or you violate the Word of God.

You actually think REASON has a role to play in life.

Well said, Father Reese.

"On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, "Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me." Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, "Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me." These will ask Him, "When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?" And Jesus will answer them, "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!"

Apropos of that, did you all catch the Bush Veto of child health care insurance?

Anon,

Thanks also for your economy of words. Please address previous longer commentaries about the flaws in religion when you get time.
