I agree with Mr. Tully. If anyone appreciates the down side of theocracy it should be a Catholic. Persons worldwide still cringe at the horror of the crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and rampant antisemiticism. Jews, Muslims and Christians died by the thousands in the onslaught.

I agree with the Reverend William McD Tully because I too do not want the state to prop up my religion. Mediation toward a common way of honoring our own dignity, and the protection of our human rights, is an effective way to overcome arrogance as well as ignorance.

As a devout secularist, I disagree. I am quite aware of the many, many good things that are done by churches and their members, as well as many, many more secular institutions . That has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion about whether governments should accommodate religious laws, rituals and codes within their laws.
No secularist I know of wants churches to stop doing good things.. or see churches banned or dismantled. We just want the government, at all levels to be of the people, by the people, for the people. All people, regardless of religious tendencies… neutral, transparent….
Christianity gets no preference, Islam gets no preference, total neutrality in society’s laws.
We do not want laws that reflect only one, or even a few religions' definition of morality unless that law is also in a secular sense protecting the rights of an individual. This would include Murder, theft, etc.
Those laws that are of a religious-only nature, i.e. Marriage laws should be purged from the government’s books. They serve no secular purpose and marriage rules vary wildly among various religious sects. The only way government can be fair to all religious definitions of marriage is to not adopt any of them.
