When Doctrine Trumps the Gospel
The Southern Baptist Convention's decision to DISfellowship a Texas Baptist congregation has led a Kentucky Baptist college to DISinvite the congregation's youth group from a summer mission trip to help poor people.
My question: WWJD? Who Would Jesus Dis?
-- The SBC, which last week voted to sever 125-year-old ties with Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth because the congregation allowed homosexual members to have their photos in the church directory.
-- The University of the Cumberlands, which just informed Broadway that its youth choir is no longer welcome to stay in dorms or perform mission work through the school's Mountain Outreach construction program, which build houses for the poor in Appalachia.
-- The Broadway Baptist Chapel Choir, whose 30 young members decided to give up 12 days of their summer, follow the words of Matthew 25, and go to rural Kentucky to serve the poor.
"All these kids want to do is praise God with their singing and serve God by helping those in poverty," Broadway Pastor Brent Beasley told Associated Baptist Press.
My guess is it wouldn't be the kids.

I've led several youth summer ministry programs for high school and college age kids, and it is often the high point of their teen years. They learn so much from being somewhere other than their normal neighborhoods, and helping people who have no means to repay except their thanks. Unfortuntely, for these kids, their desire to help will be tinged with memories of the "adults" in their world acting like children.

Let's hope these Southern Baptists, like their Mormon counterparts, have a little segregated piece of Heaven only for them where we don't have to eternally deal with them and their ignorance.

"How to stop worshiping Christ and start following Jesus" is the subtitle of a new book by Robin Meyers. I think it speaks to the issues reported in this article.

Jesus would dis the SBC and the University, because he was all about helping others instead of judging them, and he never said a thing against homosexuality.
Paul (who most of these uptight evangelicals seem to adore above Jesus) would probably dis the youth group.
And any church that names itself "Broadway" better damn sure welcome gay people.

This shows a lack of trust in their own Deity. Vengeance is mine says the Lord. When the SBC took vengeance against a member church they usurped the power of the Lord. Their 2nd God ... Jesus said judge not lest you be judged by your own measure.
The SBC must think they must intercede in God's behalf ... no different from the other religious terrorists.
My God, the creator of all things, does not require me to act in His behalf. If He wants something done He will take care of it. I only have to think and create change. I hate only hatred.

My guess is the good people of Kentucky thought that homosexuality was contagious and didn't want to catch the gay germ.

These folks are worshiping the Mammon of doctrine, and abusing those created by the Almighty. They know not what they do.

I suppose they might fear that some member of the youth choir could be homosexual. Rather sad, but if they feel strongly enough to sever ties with the church, it's not surprising that they would cancel this group's invitation.
However, there are other churches and other schools that will welcome these folks.
Considering the history of the Broadway Baptist Church (they got started at Texas Wesleyan University) perhaps they might want to ask the local United Methodist church to put them up.
Still, very sad. I don't remember where Jesus ever told us to withhold help from anyone because they didn't belong to our particular denominiation.
