Jury finds abortion doctor shooter guilty of first-degree murder
By William Wan
The jury just returned their verdict in the murder of abortion doctor shot in his Kansas church last year. It took jury members 37 minutes to deliberate, finding the shooter, Scott Roeder, guilty of premeditated, first-degree murder. You can read a full account of the verdict.
The trial featured some interesting twist and turns -- especially when Roeder and his defense team tried to argue the crime as a justifiable homicide based on his belief that by killing Tiller, he was saving unborn fetuses from being aborted. (Tiller was one of few physicians in the country carrying out late-term abortions.) Watch the verdict here. Watch part of Roeder's testimony here.
Some more interesting tidbits from LAT story:
"Roeder, the only witness called by the defense, said he felt relief after shooting Tiller on May 31. After the murder, he drove toward Kansas City, stopping for a pizza along the way."
"Sedgwick County Judge Warren Wilbert said he could not claim he acted out of necessity."
"Abortion rights groups became alarmed when Roeder's attorneys asked the judge to allow the jury to consider convicting Roeder of voluntary manslaughter. At the end of testimony Thursday, Wilbert ruled that the jury could only consider premeditated, first-degree murder."
Roeder, a 51-year-old airport shuttle driver, now faces life in prison. Jury also found him guilty on two counts of aggravated assault for threatening to shoot two church ushers while fleeing thet church.

Proof Abortion opponents a threat! A threat to America and it's citizens, a threat that is real! A threat from radicals who don't support U.S.Law Roe vs Wade, a threat to a womans right to choose, and a Doctors right to abort! As a registered Voter/Vet USAF, Republcans must be stopped, they are the party behind these attacks on innocent people such as Dr. Tiller, and Americans from all walks of life. Just think these people are also in our very halls of government, and are a danger to all who vote for them! Republican Roeder is a NUT! I'm glad the judge didn't let him use man-slaughter to get away with "COLD BLOODED MURDER! Now you see folks why Republicans are a threat to America, and yet the country keeps putting them in office, "NO WONDER AMERICAN"S DON'T VOTE" NO WONDER REPUBLICANS DOING ALL THEY CAN TO OVERTURN ROE vs Wade!
..."Be sure now YOU RUN and Vote Republican AGAIN...APPRECIATE IT!

Remember, Christians, after you have taken the plank from your eyes, blame the victim here.
As to your comment cathy231, I suppose it's ok that Roeder walked into a church and murdered somebody - after all, any church allowing Tiler to be a member surely is filled with people who also deserve to be murdered.
Does everyone in your church carry a gun?

So we see some of the christians supporting this murder. It appears that disagreeing with christians is a life-threatening thing to do.
And you wonder why we think religion is dangerous, why we think you people are to a greater or lesser extent, insane?
What other idea will you find as an excuse to murder people who disagree with you? The muslims aren't even pretending to be civilized, but apparently that is what you are doing - pretending.

"I find it interesting, and hard to believe that a doctor who preforms abortions (and late term at that) was an accepted member of a church...What would one have to do to get excommunicated from that religion?"

Cathy123, Dr. Tiller was a member of the Unitarian church. Many churches don't share your feelings that performing a legal and medically necessary operation is grounds for excommunication.
Late-term abortions are most often preformed to save the life or health of the mother, or in the case of gross fetal abnormality. Usually a medical necessity must be established. It really is unfair and dishonest of abortion opponents to pretend that if late-term abortions weren't performed, a happy, healthy baby would be born. Most of the time the outcome would be a dead mother and baby. Some people feel that is somehow better, more in keeping with "God's will." Do you?
An example of this mindset would be that 9-year-old incest victim, raped by her father, in South America. She was pregnant with twins. Her doctor said she wouldn't survive the pregnancy, and the fetuses had no chance of survival either. Her mother arranged for her to have an abortion. Both the mother and doctor were excommunicated by a bishop, who said the fetuses "deserved to live," completely disregarding that the medical opinion said they would not survive to be carried to term. He also took no sanctions against the rapist-father, saying he could be forgiven. He made no comment that the 9-year-old rape victim would almost certainly not survive her pregnancy. The unspoken belief seemed to it was better for her to die with the fetuses she was carrying, rather than have her life saved.
Abortion opponents have a moral case to make, but this isn't it. Your comments don't help your cause.

His intentions to put a stop to murder of the most vulnerable , most innocent humans of all, the unborn was admirable, however, he displayed lack of faith in God by taking the matter into his own hands the way he did. There were many other ways to combat the abortion doctor . I do imagine this murder of the doctor will deter a few other doctors from thinking of taking that course of abortion practice. Its all in Gods hands now. I imagine this prisoner will be among the most respected behind bars.

Too bad he'll actually be eligible for parole in a mere 50 years.

Too bad a lot of babies will be born to women who don't want them, too bad a lot of babies will be born with horrific defects that will render their lives very short and/or painful, too bad a lot of women who devleop pregnancy-related health problems will risk death or permanent disability as a result of having to continue carrying a dangerous pregnancy.
