Big names in religion talk 'compassion' at UN

Today, some of the biggest names in religion -Karen Armstrong, Imam Feisel Abdul Rauf and UN Goodwill Ambassador Salman Ahmad -among them spoke at the U.N. and "intersections between faith, society, politics and where compassion can play a role."

It will nice to step out of the Abrahamic faiths and also include Hindu, Buddhist and others. Mahatma Gandhi should be invoked as he truly understood the meaning of interfaith.

Not to say they shouldn't be there or shouldn't speak, but don't we know ahead of time that these will be the people there? And can't we pretty much already predict what they will say? And will it move anything forward, really? And if not, why not?
Is their appearance sort of a public general religious ritual? Is this a kind of secular "worship service?"
What I'm wondering is: What is the function, the purpose of such appearances by such people?
