On Ash Wednesday, more darkness for Catholic Church

By Elizabeth Tenety

Tuesday may have been Mardi Gras for many in the Christian world, but in Catholic America, Tuesday brought a much graver reality: In a mass suspension, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia placed 21 active priests on administrative duties due to what the New York Times characterized as "credible accusations of sexual abuse or inappropriate behavior toward minors."

After a February grand jury report that "identified 37 cases of concern," Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, ordered an investigation into the accused priests in his diocese. (This was after the cardinal insisted that there were no predator priests in active ministry.) Per the investigation's recommendations, Rigali said in a statement, the 21 were placed on leave "to allay concerns in the community about the suitability of priests to minister."

Catholic Church insider and Whispers in the Loggia blogger Rocco Palmo said the move was the "largest single suspension of priests in the history of the Stateside church."

Palmo also ran a damning response to the dismissals from another Catholic bishop which read, in part, ". . . The scandal is amplified ten-fold because it looks like it is the same old church and the same old leadership doing what it has always done in the past."

Over at Spiritual Politics, Mark Silk mulls the news and speculates on the sex abuse 'scandal' --both in its secular meaning and connotations within Catholicism.

There is widespread agreement that the fear of spiritual scandal, that is, the desire to protect the church and its congregants from the bad news of the sex abuse crisis, compounded the abuse problem. The church considers the avoidance of public scandal a spiritual good. That, Silk says, has got to go.

If anything has become clear over the past quarter century, it is that the doctrine of scandal has been the occasion of greater scandal in the Catholic Church than the sexual abuse itself. Nothing has done more to drag the Church into disrepute--and to alienate the laity--than the revelations of cover-up. It's time for the doctrine to go.

Lent, which begins today, Ash Wednesday, is a season of penance for the church. The traditional gospel reading for Wednesday's observance is a passage from Matthew, in which Jesus gives one his most direct calls against the hypocrisy of the holy, and calls for private piety over flashy shows of one's holiness. Here's hoping.

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms,
do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

Donohue and his victim demonizing minions cry, "others do it, too" and claim the percentage of priests who molest is less than in general society. So the question is what percent is this of total Philadelphia priests.

Maybe Catholic Peter King can hold congressional hearings on this terrorism as well.

They keep telling us these pervert priests are only a small percentage, but these scandals keep coming out, every few weeks, for decades on end. And every single time we find out that the Church KNEW about it, and COVERED IT UP.

At some point, we just have to face the concept that pedophilia is actually a basic secret doctrine of Catholicism.

So much for 'zero tolerance'. I thought the American Catholic Church was supposed to have a one strike and your out approach, and was going to deal with these problems before they became crimes. I suppose its my own fault for expecting an aging fraternity to police itself. We should just let the police do it, and make these sex offenders go through the same protocols that any other ones do. The good news is, in 20 years, most of these priests will be gone, as aging as their population is.

Perhaps it's time to remove all priests from having any unsupervised access to children. Full Stop.

If Catholic parents are criminally negligent or stupid enough to leave their young sons alone with priests, they should at least recognize these signs of "grooming":

http://www.suite101.com/content/how-pedophiles-groom-victims-a49648

The priest who "groomed" me befriended a lonely, awkward 14-year-old Protestant boy growing up in intolerant Mormon Utah. He was the only one who listened to me intently. Those Converse sneakers he bought me were real cool compared to the K-Mart ones my parents could only afford.

I was real excited at 14 when he showed me Playboys and then a little confused when he took me swimming and stared at my private parts in the shower room and made comments about my development. I was real confused when he cuddled with me and reached into my pants to fondle me. After that, I guess he just got too excited, rolled me over and brutally raped me.

I couldn't tell my father because he would have literally killed me and the priest both. I told my friend who invited me to CYO in the first place. He told his parents and my friend told me they told the Bishop. It was the last I heard of it until my attacker disappeared one day to another parish. Nothing was said about it again after that.

Years later, I wrote to a nun who is pretends to be a "Victim's Advocate" but later learned this is a scam to further protect the Church from more lawsuits.

I forgive this long dead pervert but will never be silenced over the international organized criminal racketeering of this vile religion.
Past, present and future victims deserve no less.

After the latest Philadelphia Archdiocese "vomit-inducing" revelations about priestly pedophilia and coverups, I am giving up the RCC not only for Lent but permanently.

From the topic:

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father........"

i.e. Matt 6:1-6

But did Jesus really utter these words? No he did not according to many contemporary NT scholars (e.g. Crossan,Ludemann)

See Ludemann's book, Jesus After 2000 Years, p.146. " In no way did Jesus speak these words........"

Looking at these comments I can see that washington post readers are gullible and kinda of ignorant. Every single story the media releases that is Anti-Catholic the viewers seem to believe are you people that naive to believe everything The media releases? The Media and the Washington-Post is very anti-Catholic thats their bias. Why else would they release this article which condemns the church on Ash Wensday such an important day in Catholic lives. less than 1% of priests have actually ever done anything sexually wrong and its way below that 1% percent. The media just likes to attack the Catholic Church every chance they get. Most priests who are actually accused of abuse are actually innocent. And their are hundreds of thousands of Catholic priests its not like all of them are going to be perfect. People do wrong and the Catholic Church is not at fault if one of their priest does wrong they are against child abuse and sin and the priests know this. The Church has done more good for humanity then any other religion or institution in history so give them a break! without them their would be not women rights, black people would have way less rights and their would be no education not to mention the millions upon millions of people the catholic church has sheltered and fed throughout history.

The reason Priests say other organizations like schools or other religions have way more child abusers is not only because its true but because they want to show the media/society bias! The Media attacks the Church for every little thing that goes on and makes everything a big scandal even when they dont have evidence. Yet the Media does not attack schools or other religions or denominations in the same way. lets look at school teachers who are with our children much much longer than priests and they can be with our kids even without our permission because we are forced to take them to school. Their is much more child abuse cases in public schools then in the catholic Church which is said to be more dangerous yet the media doesn't attack the education system or all teachers but yet when a priest does something wrong its all priests who are condemned and the whole Catholic Church is attacked and somehow at fault.

The media along with lots of people in society are very Anti-Catholic and they sway/manipulate people into thinking the same way open your eyes people its for your own benefit!

John 15:20 Jesus Said

“Remember the word that I said to you, `A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you”

Matthew 16:18

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.”

So by your count, and if we only count the 21 pervert priests in Philadelphia the Cardinal has admitted to, there must be at 2,100 priests in Philadelphia. Is that right are are you just another lame Donohue Catholic who blindly refuses see the elephant in the basilica?

While you're cherry-picking Matthew, look at verse 18:6. You're complicit by looking the other way and more so by making excuses for these terrorists.

Here's another one that applies to your criminal Church as well:

Matthew 7:15-20

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ...

Does anyone ever wonder why the Catholic Church seems to be hit by these scandals again and again?

1. Easy target...those Catholics are just everywhere!
2. Hating Catholics is the last acceptable prejudice in this country (and in the world at large)
3. Increased scrutiny on the Catholic Church and a complete lack of media (or anyone else) looking into other faith groups or the public schools.

4. All of the above.

Unless there's been a legal change recently, an abuser can ALWAYS be held criminally accountable for sexual abuse.

But if you are a student abused by a priest or employee of a Catholic institution, you have until age 25 in Maryland to report an intent to sue in civil court (suing for money/damages).

If you are a student in a PUBLIC school, you have 6 months (yes 6 months) after the actual sex abuse occurred to file an intent to sue for money in civil court.

Think about how bankrupt the states would be if public schools were held to the same standard as Catholic institutions...

These priests, if the accusations prove true, are guilty of horrible crimes against children. But to make it seem that Catholic priests are the worst or only abusers of children is simply not true. And until we look at the sex-driven culture in our society and go beyond this vendetta against the Catholic Church. None of our children will be safe.

There is a bigger problem here and it goes way beyond the Catholic Church.

Too bad such prejudice will keep reform from happening in public schools and other institutions...and that more youth will go without protection from all the predators that are out there

For decades (probably centuries) catholic terrorists have been sexually abusing our children thereby destroying their lives.
Leaders in this catholic terrorist organization, with the assistance and collusion of police and political officials, have protected these monsters and have allowed them to continue to commit their terrorist acts. Every year more of these terrorists and their nightmare deeds are revealed.
Will Congress hold hearings on the catholic terrorists? When will the temples of the cult of child abusers be pulled down? When will the catholic terrorists be rounded up and destroyed?
Never. Hypocrisy rules, abetted by political and moral cowardice. The catholic terrorists will continue to prey on our children because WE allow our legal and political "leaders" to turn a blind eye to the cult of the child abusers.
Is it any wonder that this once great nation has fallen so low?
Keep your children close, only you can protect them.

"nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah!"

Except "others" don't claim to be "Brothers of Christ" and hide behind Cardinals $10,000 red dresses.

Another view from some of the contemporary NT scholars (e.g. Crossan, Ludemann) about Matt 7: 15-20, John 15:20 and Matt 16: 18.

None of these passages were said by the historic Jesus.

e.g. See Professor Ludemann's book, Jesus After 2000 Years, p. 548

It's amazing, it's appalling, that catholics come here and see only anti-catholics where the most of us are anti-pedophile.

Given this observation by the posting catholics, we must assume that all catholic priests are pedophiles, else why would the catholics complain that anti-pedophiles are anti-catholic?

It seems it never ends. Every few months, another collection of pederasts and child molestors are revealed to us all. On top of that, there's the cardinals and bishops and administrative catholic types who shuffle around the pedophiles to protect the church, over an above protecting the children.

Really, catholics, what are we to make of this behavior? Your priests are doing doing this, why do you complain about us noticing it and NOT NOTICE IT yourself!

Right next to the disgusting and perverted behavior of your priests and your church is your support of these same people molesting the children. You are guilty as accessories after the fact.

Revelations 12:15
And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

Satan is an accuser like the "flood waters from the dragons mouth" which means unclean dialogue full of vanity and pride against the defenseless sheep and lamb. As flood waters are unclean and full of dirt, so is the many accusations aimed at Catholics by proud and vain, unclean "flood waters pouring from the dragons mouth". Humm Satan is thus amongst us in the form of protestant flood waters and he will get more and more accusatory especially when he discovered that he is no longer allowed in heaven. This is a period soon to come.

As an Australian Jesuit educated Catholic, I and all my fellow siblings have all committed 'mortal sins' (ie we will all go to hell.)
One brother used IVF to have 2 wonderful children. Mortal Sin.
Another brother is gay. He has a partner of many years, whom we all adore.Mortal sin.
My sister used contraception in the 60s. Mortal sin.
And yet, still, the Church is protecting paedophiles, not only in the US but also here in Australia.
My family should all be considered 'good catholics', when in reality none of us want anything to do with this religion anymore.
In reality, Jesus would never been part of such an intolerant, bigoted 'Church'
Yes, I believe in God.
But the 'Catholic Church' has nothing to do with it.
We were all on the wrong bus folks.
Wake up to yourselves.
