In America we have a similar situation. The main difference is that here, the government and the media are often
intimidated by big business. The reason of course is MONEY. The media
are so concerned that stories critical of corporations will cause
them to pull their advertising that
they rarely air them and if they do
they give the corporation a chance
to refute the story.
The politicians are loathe to upset the corporations because they depend on them to give money
to cover the cost of buying advertising on television for their political campaigns. The result of this cozy little gravy
train is that the media makes tons
of money on advertising, the corporations make tons of money
convincing the consumer that their
life will be unbearable if they don't purchase whatever fizzy, flashy, product that the corporation is selling. And, lastly, the politicians make a nice living thank you very much
by playing along with this corrupt arrangement.
